Fun and games: Tiny steps to avoid tiny toys

This is the fun and games strategy for me whenever I am around those little ones who are playing on the floor with their little toys.  The object of the game is for me to ensure that I do not step, not just on their toys, but also on them!

As someone with several cousins who were much younger than me, I had a lot of practice doing this growing up. Then, when I had nieces and nephews later on, my strategy came in handy.

I was always anxious to ensure that I did not step on anything or anyone and the way to do that was to take tiny steps as nothing else would work for me.  Of course, I ran into difficulty from time to time but I am happy to report that I survived it all.

Who is Santa Claus? By Donna J. Jodhan

He comes primarily at Christmastime but did you know that he is always with us?  Many of our youngest ones think that he lives in the far North but in reality he lives anywhere and everywhere.

In North America and colder countries, he makes his entry into our homes through our chimneys and the modern day Santa can also leave his presents outside the doors of our condos and town houses.  He can travel in so many different ways; on a sleigh, on a motorcycle, on a truck, by bicycle, by ship or boat, by plane or helicopter, and even on foot.  It all depends on where he is and what he needs to do in order to get where he needs to go.

Believe it or not, Santa Claus goes by so many different names and it can easily be said that he has several different aliases.  In the colder countries he is known as either Santa Claus or Father Christmas.  In the Eastern countries he is known as St. Nick and in the warmer tropical countries he is known as Sandy Claus!  Of course, there are other names for him as well.

To the wide-eyed kid he is the one in a red suit that wears a white beard and he has a huge laugh of ho, ho, ho!  He brings toys and goodies down the chimneys of homes and he hands out gifts at malls and at parties.  He shows up at parades; he hands out toys from open roofed trucks, and he lugs his goodies on bicycles, motorcycles and on his back.  He even drops off his gifts by ship, boat, helicopter, and plane.

This is who he is to those little ones who still believe in Santa.  However, there is more to this fat jolly man than just the one who does these things.

Whenever we smile at a stranger, nod a greeting to someone that we do not know, or take the time to give a gift to someone who is less fortunate than we are, these are all deeds of Santa's generosity. In essence, we too are Santa Claus in our own way but we do not have to wait until Christmas to do this.

The secret of Christmas may be this!  It's not the things you do at Christmas time, but the Christmas things you do all year through!  Taken from a Christmas song.

Merry Christmas from me!

The color of Christmas

As Andy Williams used to sing out each year: "It's the most wonderful time of the year,” and this is certainly the case for me.  It is that time of year when the child in me decides to show itself.  I am never too embarrassed to express my joy whenever I hear Santa's rich laughter and whenever I smell the sweet fragrance of pine.  All of those colorful presents, bows, lights, and other goodies dancing before my eyes!

Now that my vision is down to a bare minimum, I use my imagination to help me out.  I imagine all those mysterious colored packages under a huge tree decorated with blinking lights.  I can almost see those colorful lights dancing in my memory and I can practically reach out and grab one of those mysterious packages from under the tree.

Lights intermingled with artificial snowflakes, all kinds of Christmas figures and at the top of the tree?  The shining star!

I must not forget my angel and my manger with the Baby Jesus lying in Mother Mary's arms.  The animals, shepherds, Joseph, and the three wise men.  All fixed in my mind's eye forever.

The toys all come alive in my mind!  Doll houses filled with little people.  Furniture, tea sets, and strollers with baby dolls.  Even the racing cars, train sets, and those ice skates dancing just out of my reach.  The skis waiting for me to put them on and the colorful balls and game sets.

Ah yes!  The color of Christmas and I will forever be a child at this time of the year!

Happy childhood memories: How the tiny toys helped me

So, what am I referring to today?  Well, they are the toys that belonged to my twin brother, Jeffrey, and I have such great memories of playing with them. Jeffrey allowed me to play with his tiny cars, trucks, buses and vans, and planes, boats, and soldiers.

In those days I had enough vision to see the colors of all of his toys and I remember not having too much difficulty identifying the various vehicles.  I used to drive them around on Mom's carpet and then I would pretend all kinds of things.  I would even take the toy soldiers and line them up ready for battle.

Some of my favorite tiny toys included the news van, the flat bed truck, the model Mercedes, and oh yes!  The red ship and the yellow boat.  I also loved the jeeps with the spare tire at the back.

I firmly believed that having been able to feel the shapes of these tiny toys fully enabled me to identify them by sight when I received my functional vision years later.

I'm probably one of the biggest ones: The Christmas kids

I really don't think that it matters how old we are when it comes to enjoying Christmas.  We are all kids in our very own way and I am probably one of the biggest kids when it comes to Christmas.

Yes! It is my favorite time of the year.  Just to hear the kids themselves as they shout with glee!  As they sing with joy!  As they whoop with excitement whenever they see Santa Claus or they find something that they have been looking for!  Ah! Just to be a kid at Christmas!

For me personally, at Christmas, being a kid in my own way is really not describing it fully!  I guess that I have always been a kid at heart.  I love the toys.  First, the electronic games and gadgets.  Next come the dolls and doll houses with all of the furniture, and tea sets.  Then come the puzzles, the bats and balls, and then finally everything else that makes me smile!  In short, anything that makes a noise, anything that beeps, talks, and anything that enables me to create, imagine, and develop!

Christmas is for everyone and age is no barrier.  No gift is too big or too small.  There is a kid in each of us and all we need to do is to let it all hang out.  It is not as difficult as you may think.  Just let it happen, then sit back and enjoy! It is what I do every year, and you know what?  I really don't have to wait until Christmas to do it!  I can be a kid anytime I want!  It is just that it is so much more fun being a kid at Christmas time! It is so much easier to be a kid at this time of the year!

The sounds and smells!  The ambiance and the songs!  The sights and events!  For after all, was it not then when the greatest and most famous kid was born?  Our Lord Jesus Christ?

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, wishing you a very merry Christmas!

Cherished memories: Driving Jeffrey's cars around our home

I really enjoyed those childhood days whenever I got the chance to play with my brother Jeffrey's cars, trading in my dolls and tea sets for another type of fun.

We used to tie bits of string to these cars and then proceed to race each other around the house.  There was the police  car, the patrol car, the lumbering bus, the old timer car, and oh, yes, my favorite!  The Ferrari!

These activities usually took place on weekends, mainly on Sundays.  Our dogs were spectators but they made very sure to do their spectating from afar choosing to stay back as we raced by.

Our parents did not seem to object or at least I never thought that they did.  Granny stayed in her room reading her newspapers and my mom and dad sat around looking on.

Oh yes!  Those were such happy days, never to return! However, the memories remain forever.

Such wonderful times: Remembering the toys at school

It's funny how this particular memory keeps popping into my mind every so often and each time it does I enjoy it even more.  I can still picture the images of those precious little toys racing around in my mind.

From the peg board to the Lego's, from the alphabet board to the blocks and villages, the puzzles to the train sets, and the construction disks to the fishing game.

There were no computers or iDevices in those days.  Just toys that were meant to teach us, as vision-impaired kids, all kinds of different things. We learned the various shapes through our shape boards.  We learned how to build various objects through our Lego's, blocks, and construction sets and we learned our alphabet letters by having to fit the letters into slots on the board.

The alphabet board was probably one of my favorite toys followed by the villages which we used to construct mini villages.  We did it through the use of tiny plastic sticks, beads, and blocks.  Then there were mini trees, boats, and carriages to go along with these sets.

I must not forget the Plasticine and clay which our teachers often gave to us and then asked us to make various objects.  Anything from boats and baskets filled with eggs to bats and balls and airplanes.

Then we learned how to make paper planes and rockets and fly them outdoors. We made paper fans and picture frames and hats.  We made houses with our Lego's and the list went on and on.  Those were the days when we had to use our imaginations to create and I loved every moment of it all.

Looking back: Playing with Jeffrey's toys

I can easily say that as a child I certainly had the best of two worlds. That is, I was able to play with my girl's toys, either on my own or with my girl cousins, and then, on the other hand, with my brother Jeffrey's toys.

I looked upon this as having been able to enjoy two different worlds. Jeffrey is my twin brother so there was no age barrier.  I played with his toy cars and toy soldiers.   I simply loved to drive them around on the carpet, and then there were his little trucks, vans, and buses.

One of my favorites was his space ship and another was his Mix Master cement mixer.  He always used to let me play with them for hours on end.

Then he would help me tie bits of string around his larger cars and pull them around our home.  There was his police car, the patrol car, the large bus, and the old-timer car!  And oh, yes!  The Ferrari race car, which was one of my favorites.

Sometimes I tried out his pop guns but I was always afraid of the noise that they made.  The one thing that I stayed away from, however, was his model planes because I knew how much he treasured them. I was always afraid that I would break them if I touched them too hard.  However, my parents would let me touch them once in a while so that I could get an idea of their shape.

Oh, yes!  How much I enjoyed playing with Jeffrey's toys!  Those tiny cars and toy soldiers will forever be in my mind, and yes!  Playing with the sailboats in our large, plastic swimming pool.

Another childhood memory: Remembering my childhood bathtub

Oh yes!  It was huge and it was filled with all kinds of things as I passed through my childhood years.  With balls of all sizes.  With boats and ships. With all kinds of everything.

This tub was not your ordinary one!  It was custom made with lots of space for me to slide around.  There were high walls and a step to climb down into the tub.  There was a shower and an additional tap for us kids to shower under.

I always remember using the bar of soap to make the floor of the tub slippery and then I would sit and slide around in it all.  My brother, Jeffrey, did the same thing and as kids we would have mini races in our bath tub.

Ah, yes!  Those wonderful memories!

The Christmas kids

I really don't think that it matters how old we are when it comes to enjoying Christmas. We are all kids in our very own way and I am probably one of the biggest kids when it comes to Christmas.

Yes! It is my favorite time of the year. Just to hear the kids themselves as they shout with glee! As they sing with joy! As they whoop with excitement whenever they see Santa Claus or they find something that they have been looking for! Ah! Just to be a kid at Christmas!

For me, personally, at Christmas being a kid in my own way is really not describing it fully!

It is what I do every year and you know what? I really don't have to wait until Christmas to do it! I can be a kid anytime I want! It is just that it is so much more fun being a kid at Christmas time! It is so much easier to be a kid at this time of the year!

The sounds and smells! The ambiance and the songs! The sites and events! For after all, was it not then when the greatest and most famous kid was born? Our Lord, Jesus Christ?

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, wishing you a very merry Christmas!

The color of Christmas

As Andy Williams used to sing out each year, "It's the most wonderful time of the yea,r" and this is certainly the case for me.

Memories of my teddy bears

Each of these furry ones shall forever stand out in my mind. There was Rolly Polly. There was Andy Pander. There was Oswald, and then there was Teddy!

Rolly Polly was a huge, fat, golden teddy bear that my parents bought me when I was about five years old. He lived on my bed for many years. Then there was Andy Pander who was a black and white bear with nice ears. My brother, Robert, had won him at a fair. I always remembered Robert telling me that he would bring Andy Pander home to me just before he went out to the fair with Mom, my aunt and cousin, and her friend. Robert did not disappoint me and I immediately loved him, putting him to lie right next to Rolly Polly on my bed.

Oswald came a bit later on and he was a small yellow bear. He was a tough little guy but I still loved him, nevertheless, and found a space for him on my bed.

Teddy was the last to come and by that time I was beginning to outgrow teddy bears, but he, too, had a special spot on my bed. He was small but very furry.

Ah yes! Memories of my teddy bears forever.

Playing with the tiny toys

Growing up with two brothers meant for me that I spent lots of time playing with their toys. I had lots of fun doing it and as I sit writing this blog I can still vividly remember it all.

I had so much fun playing with their tiny cars, jeeps, buses, trucks, vans, and armored vehicles. I also played with their toy soldiers and war planes and boats and it enabled and allowed me to use my imagination to a great extent.

I used to drive the tiny toys up and down the carpet and onto the bare floors of our home. I used to imagine all kinds of things. Anything from delivering newspapers in my little van to driving myself to school. I used to pretend that I could drive any of these tiny toys on my own. I used to either play by myself or play with my brothers.

Out of all of this came some very important experiences for me. I learned to imagine. I learned the shapes of various vehicles, and I learned to develop my various motor skills. I also learned to play with all kinds of toys other than my girl toys.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan your friendly accessibility advocate wishing you a terrific day and inviting you to come by and check out my heart warming audio mysteries at www.donnajodhan.com. I write and record my very own mysteries and I can tell you that my audio mysteries are completely void of explicit descriptions of sex and violence. Toys that dance in my head

Truth be told, I am and shall forever be a child at heart. I am like a kid in a candy shop when it comes to my favorite toys. I used to love to look at the various colors of balls, tea sets, and so much more. I used to love to look at the little doll houses, the dolls, furniture, and all of their clothes and accessories.

I can still remember the colors and shapes of them all but now, with precious little vision at my disposal, I need to remember them through my mind's eye. I can tell you that they sure dance in front of me whenever I choose to dust off those precious memories and bring them back to life.

I can still conjure up memories of those exquisite doll houses with the rooms, kitchens, chairs and tables. The dolls with their fancy costumes. The chimneys and the sloping roofs. The bright colors of the houses themselves.

I can still remember the yellow, red, and green balls with matching bats. I can still remember the delicate little cups and saucers with their jugs, sugar bowls, and milk jugs. Matching tea sets waiting for me to have a tea party.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan your friendly accessibility advocate wishing you a terrific day and inviting you to go out there and tell others about my memories. Visit me at www.sterlingcreations.ca to learn more about me.

My favorite sand box

As I sit here writing this blog I can still remember my favorite sand box as clear as day. It was just right, the one at primary school. Not too big and not too small. Not too deep and not too shallow. Filled with soft white sand that simply slipped through my fingers each time I went to play with it.

This particular sand box was filled with all kinds of wonderful little toys. Little cars and trucks. Boats, buses, scooters, and mini buckets and spades. Hoes and rakes, and my favorites! Ducks, chickens, fishes, lobsters, and crabs. Everything was so colorful! Things in so many different colors and how I loved to play with them.

Sometimes I would sneak away at break time to play with them on my own. There I would kneel in front of my favorite sand box and there I would play with its contents. I would arrange the ducks and chickens in a line. Then do the same with the fishes, crabs, and lobsters. I would place the boats in a circle, and place the spades hoes and rakes in the little buckets. Then I'd drive the little cars and scooters around in the sand and do the same with the buses and trucks. I would compose stories on my own as my hands moved everything around.

The cars, boats, scooters, trucks and buses were of various colors ranging from blue and red to yellow and green. The ducks were blue, the chickens were yellow, the fishes were red and green, the lobsters were red, and the crabs were green. Buckets were blue and yellow and there were matching spades, hoes, and rakes and oh yes! The wheel barrow was a bright yellow.

I remember it all now and this is what keeps me alive and thinking. The ability to remember color as I can no longer see it now.
