A lighter moment : When the rain soaked my plants

Oh boy, and what a mess! I had to exercise all of my patience to deal with this.

I had gone out on my balcony to water my plants and good thing that I had the presence of mind to check before pouring water into them.

The rain had come down and soaked my beloved plants; even over soaking them. Plus there was water on the floor of the balcony.

I will say that, as a vision-impaired person, it is vitally important to use my fingers to check on things before proceeding.

I decided to just leave the water to subside in the soil of my plants as it would have been too difficult for me to remove the water.

Oh my gosh! Water all over my counter

It is one thing to discover that there has been a spill all over my counter, but when the spill pertains to water?  Well, it’s another matter to contend with.

In the case of non water spills, I can feel the contents of the spill. But in the case of water, that’s another story.

When water spills occur, I have to do my best to clean it up before the water flows all over my counter.  Water spills spread quickly and there’s no stopping the water.  Whereas in the case of non water spills, the contents often stay put.

Ah, yes!  The difference between water spills and other types of spills!

The sound of flowing water: Enjoying my fountain

Ah, yes!  Just to hear the sound of water flowing in my fountain is enough to ease the stress and anxiety for me.  It does not matter what time of the year it is, it is a tonic for me!

I usually turn it on, on  a Saturday morning while I do my house work and often times in the evening while I sit and relax after a long day's work.  It is so soothing.  It is so relaxing!  It just helps me to recharge, regroup, and to get ready for bed! Sometimes I even nod off while listening to my beloved fountain!

Wonderful times: Bathing the dogs

You would think that bathing 3 huge dogs would have been lots of problems, but no! They never gave any problems. They would stand quietly and allow us to give them their baths.  Most of the time the water was quite cold but they never complained and never tried to run away.

I loved to spend time bathing them. I would call them and they would come willingly. I would turn on the hose then proceed to make sure that they were well watered down from head to foot.  Then I would soap them with tender love and care and finally I would make sure that they would be rinsed off thoroughly.

Tiger was flat-coated so it was much easier to bathe him than it was for Lion who was very furry. Yella was also flat-coated but smaller than Tiger and Lion. Each dog probably loved being bathed in their own way. It was always so very refreshing when we were done bathing them as they smelled so very fresh and clean.

Just some more childhood memories forever.

What a funny experience! Putting the wrong bottle in the freezer

Well now!  Here is another classic of how I almost ended up off of the beaten track and at the end of it all I simply had to laugh at myself. Here's the short form of the story.

I had bought a bottle of flavoured water at the supermarket and then had brought it home.  I placed it in my pantry next to a bottle of honey and then a few days later I returned to my pantry to retrieve the bottle of flavoured water so that I could freeze it for a few hours before taking it with me to an exam.

So far so good.  I removed what I thought was the bottle and placed it in the freezer and the next day I took it out of the freezer and was just going to leave it in my fridge to thaw out when I decided to check it to make sure that all was good.  Alas!  It was not good!

I soon discovered that instead of freezing the bottle of flavoured water, I had done it to the bottle of honey!  Time to correct but not panic!  I went to my pantry and retrieved the correct bottle, the flavoured water, and put it in the freezer.  Then I replaced the frozen bottle of honey on the shelf in my pantry.

Both bottles felt the same and were of the same height and this is how I got tripped up.  However, what I should have done was to shake the bottle when I first went to my pantry and no doubt I would have been able to avoid this mistake.

All in a day's work.

Those days are forever: Remembering the swimming pool at school

Oh, what a lovely childhood memory!  Those happy-go-lucky days when I would frolic in our school's swimming pool with my school friends.  Mrs. Mondey would be supervising from the side and she made very sure that we did not go too far into the deep end.

I was probably one of the best swimmers so she did not mind me skipping into the deep end from time to time.  I still remember those warm sunny days when we would be allowed to go swimming.

It was always in the afternoon when the sun was at its hottest.  I would step into the pool using the steps and from there I would walk around, first looking up at the lovely blue sky and then looking down to see the sun playing on the water of the pool.

I would swim with my friends and we would laugh, yell, and sing out, all with pure delight.  Those were such happy days!  When there were no cares in the world for me.  So innocent as my thoughts were almost always filled with hopes and dreams and imaginations of growing up to go off and create all kinds of toys and things to help others.

These are such perfect memories and nothing or no one could ever take them away from me.  Oh no!  They are mine forever.

A funny experience: When the kettle leaked

Looking back at this particular instance it was not very funny at the time but now I can smile a bit more when remembering.

At first, no one seemed to know where the water that was making puddles on my counter had come from.  One guess was that it had come from up above via a leak in the ceiling.  Another guess was that it came from a tap that had been left running and that the water had overflowed onto the counter.  Then we figured it out.

The poor old kettle was the culprit, so to speak.  We had filled it too full and as a result the water came running out.  This could happen to anyone but when you are vision impaired it takes a bit more thinking and figuring out to identify the reason.

Sometimes my head hurts just trying to figure out things but I have to accept this and just deal with it.

Another childhood memory: Remembering my childhood bathtub

Oh yes!  It was huge and it was filled with all kinds of things as I passed through my childhood years.  With balls of all sizes.  With boats and ships. With all kinds of everything.

This tub was not your ordinary one!  It was custom made with lots of space for me to slide around.  There were high walls and a step to climb down into the tub.  There was a shower and an additional tap for us kids to shower under.

I always remember using the bar of soap to make the floor of the tub slippery and then I would sit and slide around in it all.  My brother, Jeffrey, did the same thing and as kids we would have mini races in our bath tub.

Ah, yes!  Those wonderful memories!

So many years ago: Remembering my favorite wash basin

You may be asking then, so what's so special about any wash basin?  And here is my answer, for what it is worth.

It was a lovely green color, very large, and just the right size for me to play in with my boats.  I simply loved this wash basin that was in our family's bathroom.

On so many quiet days when the family was otherwise occupied with other activities, I would fill my favorite wash basin with water and then I would put my little boats into the water.  Then I would stand there and simply play with them.

My imagination would simply take me to so many places: to different countries, to a peaceful river, to the deep blue sea, and even to a lagoon void of ripples.

I would sail my little boats, have boat races, and then I would make waves in the water to rock the boats.  The larger ones often withstood the waves but the poor little ones often sank to the bottom.

Oh, how I loved it all.  No one ever really interrupted my time with my boats and if ever they peaked in on me, I would never know.  My times with my boats in my favorite wash basin were priceless memories and always will be.

One of my favorite things to do: Listening to the sounds of spring

This is just one of my favourite things to do whenever I can spare a moment.  Ah yes!  Spring!  A breath of fresh air and so good for the cleansing of my soul!

Those sweet little birds with voices as pure as a breeze in a bottle!  They can reach any note on your piano and exceed any octave.  They can hold a beat for longer than most and their lilts are so filled with feeling and love.

Then there is the sound of fast flowing water as it gushes down a drain, a river, or at your feet as you walk in the rain.  So free, without any inhibition.

The sound of raindrops beating down on the panes of my windows.  Cars squishing along as they drive on rain soaked streets.  Gentle breezes rustling through the trees, and then at night, the insect world coming alive.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly accessibility advocate, wishing you a terrific day.

Looking into the glass

When I was at university, my friend Connie and I used to play this little game very often.  We would each fill a glass with water and then there we would sit for a while, just gazing into our glasses of water.

For better or for worse we would each claim that we could see various images and for me I believe that I could indeed do so.  I could see faces, images, and nature scenes.  We both loved it so much and it sure made us smile more often than not.

Unfortunately I can no longer do it, or I should be asking myself: could I still do it?  It would be a different way of doing it if I were indeed able to do so.

Maybe what I ought to do is just try it and see what happens.  Who knows? I may just be pleasantly surprised!

When the sink leaked

Well, you may be asking yourself, how did I find out that my good old sink in my bathroom was leaking?  I did not see it. I felt it!

For the most part a blind person is unable to see when a sink is leaking and most of the time they end up discovering it when they feel water either on the floor or in their lower cabinet.

This is what happened to me a few months ago when I went to fetch something in my lower cabinet.  There it was!  Water all over my stuff.

There was water all over my boxes, bottles, and in my caddies.  My first thought was to let out a huge groan but then something else took over and I soon set to work to clean it up.

Then I called for help and soon the problem was fixed.  I did have to spend some time cleaning up, however.

Memories of a bathtub

Sure! There are many of us who often take our bathtub for granted and that's okay, but for me memories of a bathtub have so many wonderful recollections.

The first time that I was really able to see my bathtub was after I had my first cornea transplant. Like a kid in a candy store! I filled my bathtub with clear sparkling water then I carefully inserted frothy bath bubbles from a large bottle of the sweet smelling stuff. Then I sat and watched for a very long time as the bubbles formed and then floated gently and gracefully on the surface of the water. I was absolutely mesmerized and could not take my eyes away. The water grew cool and still I continued to sit and watch.

Then, when finally I returned to reality, I took my fingers and began to play with the frothy water. The bubbles quickly dispersed but then they came back together and continued their circular journey around the tub. Then I refreshed the water with some more warm water and made more bubbles then sat and watched in pure fascination.

I took my fingers and tried to form shapes out of the bubbles. I do not think that I did too badly for a first time. I loved the feel of the froth. I loved the sight of the fluffy froth and most of all! The sweet smell of everything!

That was then and this is now! I can no longer see the bubbles in my bathtub but I sure have dozens of memories.

Watching the water flow

I used to love to do this when I had enough vision to do it. To sit and watch the flow of water in my bathtub, in my kitchen sink, in the sea, and anywhere I could find flowing water.

The water sparkled and moved! It flowed noisily and it flowed quietly. It flowed lazily and it flowed gently.

I could still remember going out to watch the water flow in a drain on a rainy spring day. There I would stand quietly looking down at the water hustling down the drain. Sometimes the water was clean and at other times it was murky. Or I would stand on a semi-deserted beach watching the water flow in circles in the sea. The water sparkled as the face of the sun beamed down on it.

These were some of my favorite pastimes when I had enough vision to see, but now without the benefit of sight I can use my memories to remember and pretend that I am watching.

Memories of a waterfall

Oh, how well-preserved is this memory! It is saved in my memory bank forever. It sits there and can be recalled at a second's notice. I often use this memory to help me relax and recharge, but most of all I use it to help me visualize those huge plumes of white water shooting into the air and then falling backwards into the lake.

I can clearly remember the waterfall at Niagara and others as well. Just sitting there and watching the white water go on its way. I also remember one that I saw in a small lake as I sat there with my friends on a grassy bank on a summer's day.

Water has also fascinated me, from the ocean to the lake and from the lagoon to the river. That huge mass of white water jumping high into the air is no different. Ah yes, my memory of a waterfall forever.

Remembering my favorite waterways

Whenever I feel like spending some down time, I sit quietly and bring up memories of when I had enough vision to see my favorite waterways. It sure helps me to relax and remember. These memories are still very much with me and they will probably never die. They are preserved forever.

Let me start with a peaceful river, so quiet, so sparkling, and water so cool to the touch. Leaves floating noiselessly down its way reminding me of tiny pleasure boats racing each other in the current. Rocks on either side of the bank and me sitting there taking it all in.

Next is a calm ocean in the Caribbean. Jade green water swirling around me. White-capped waves rolling gently towards the shore and surf looking like lace. I am lying on my back in this calm ocean looking up at a bright blue Caribbean sky that is tinged with fast moving, puffy white clouds.

Then comes a peaceful lake that is dark and smooth. The water somehow looks like a dark glassy surface. Noisy birds of all sizes are squawking and flying around. Snow geese, gulls, and swans are hovering close by and I am standing on a ferry looking out at them or sitting in a restaurant that overlooks the lake.

Ah yes! The waterfalls, with white water shooting upwards! I am sitting on a bank a few hundred yards away looking out at this fantastic spectacle. I am elated but at the same time a bit afraid and not sure why.

Finally, a blue ocean with a surface as smooth as glass. I am either swimming in it or admiring it from the rails of a cruise ship. Everything is so fresh and pure. The air is cool and a gentle breeze is running across and down my cheeks. I hear some birds, hear laughter close by, and I am totally in my own world.

There you have it! Memories of my favorite waterways forever and it does not matter if I am no longer able to see them, they are my memories forever.

At the Beach with Mom

This is one of my most enjoyable times; going on a beach vacation with my mom.  We have so much fun and she is literally my eyes.  She helps me to negotiate buffets, crowded areas, hotel lobbies, and so on.

She describes so much to me; the scenery around us, people passing and walking, and the activity on the beach.  We have so much fun together and she is never tired of describing, explaining, and helping.  Some may say that this is all in a day's work for her because she is mom; but I never take anything for granted.  Mom is my eyes!  My guide!  My best friend!

When we walk on the beach I kick my memory into high gear and imagine that I can see the rolling waves, the soft golden sand, the cloudless skies, plus more.  I bring swaying trees into my mind's eye.  Then I expand the picture with boats, surfers, and swimmers.  Then I finish off the picture with sand castles, shells lying lazily on the beach, and sun tanners.  O boy!  What a joy!
