Both sides of the coin: The joys and hardships of Zoom

Oh, yes!  Zoom is very much like technology!  When it is good it is very good but when it is bad it is also very bad!

I think, though, that on the whole Zoom has and continues to help us keep in touch, especially so during the pandemic.  I have gotten used to being able to navigate it and to be an active participant in Zoom meetings.

The only challenge is the reception which, at times, is extremely iffy from the Caribbean.  However, Zoom cannot really be blamed for this!  Right?

Tasty and refreshing: Those yummy fresh fruits

Yes!  I can still picture them in my mind as I munch on them every morning while visiting Mom.  The large sweet grapes are a dark red.  The zesty melon is red.  The sweet cool pineapple is yellow, and on we go.

I may not have my colours right but this is what I imagine them to be.  It does not take away the fact that each fruit means the world to me.  I take my time to bite into each with love and care.  I savour each and I eat slowly.

Ah yes!  Those fresh yummy fruits!

A touch of humour: When I picked up the wrong envelope

It's humorous as I look back on this incident now and a good thing that Mom was there to save me from some embarrassment.  She had asked me to give an envelope to Carl for her that contained a cheque and what did I do?

I picked up the wrong envelope and as I was headed to the door to hand over the envelope Mom caught me in time.  I had the presence of mind to show it to her before handing it over to Carl.

Knowing Carl, he would probably have gone with the envelope to pay Mom’s bill and would not have realized the mistake until he pulled out the envelope from his pocket to pay up.

All in a day’s humour.

Sweet songsters! Appreciating those beautiful birds

Each day, without fail, they are there to sing their little hearts out and they do not ask for anything in return.  They are so near but yet so far away.  They make their homes in the trees around Mom’s neighbourhood and this is where they sit, sing, play, and sleep.

When I rise at around 3 a.m. every day, they are already up and singing and their day comes to an end at around 6 p.m.  A very long day for such little creatures!  They have a schedule that works like a clock and they never fail to disappoint me.

Ah, yes!  Appreciating those little songsters!

I am not able to see them but I sure love them, no matter what.

Warm and welcoming! Moving around in Mom's kitchen

Her kitchen is much bigger than mine so every time I visit her I need to reacquaint myself with the layout of her kitchen.

The cupboards are longer and wider.  The sink is much bigger, and then there are many more things for me to take note of.  The island, in particular, is something that I constantly need to keep in mind as I walk around her kitchen.

I enjoy shining up her faucets, but alas!  I cannot use her microwave because there are no Braille labels on the buttons to guide me.  She has an old fashioned electric stove that I can use; the kettle is also usable for me and so, too, is the toaster oven.

The fridge is easy to find and I can easily navigate the interior.

I really love Mom’s kitchen as it is very spacious, so easy to clean and most of all there is a window over the sink.

Maybe a snob? Rico’s strange behaviour

I would say that this elusive gentleman cat is probably not the friendliest that I have come across.  To be clear, he is an adopted cat that roams the neighbourhood, choosing to make our yard his home.

He is neutered and this was done so that he would not go around helping the cat population to increase.  So I am not sure if this is part of his standoff attitude towards us.

Whenever he chooses to visit my mom, he does so on his own terms.  He sneaks up the steps and then he goes directly to lie under the plants where the shade from the sun is the best.  As a result, I have never been able to play with him but the other day he came bounding up the steps and even allowed Mom to pat him on the head.

I am not sure if he was showing off because some kittens were in his company but there you have it.

I often hear him crying in the yard or maybe it can be called mewing.  Then there is the occasional fight and I can definitely recognize Rico’s very loud voice yelling at his intruders.

Oh well!  I kind of have a mental picture of what this gentleman cat looks like.

She is the best! My precious Mom

She is the light of my life!  My reason for living and for doing!  My reason for waking up every day and for making things better than possible!

My mom is my precious girl!  My best friend and the one who has always stood by me through thick and thin and through the roughest of waters and the calmest of seas!  She has always been there for me!

Call me very lucky!  Jesus smiled on me the day he blessed me with my mom!  She had to wait so long for me to come into this world but this is what she did and this is my story!

Simply priceless! Enjoying my visit

A very special visit for me and enjoying all that there is to enjoy!  The company!  The ambiance, the food, the good will, and so much more!

Then there is the weather, those wonderful birds, the fresh air, and the sunshine.

To Carl, Vonnie, Carol, Ryan, Cordell, Maura, and, of course, my precious Mom and family!  Thanks lots!

So much to enjoy and so very much to appreciate and to be grateful for!

Treasures forever 2021: The best Christmas gifts ever

There are Christmas gifts and then there are those Christmas gifts that one should never ever forget.  Oh yes, and this is what happened for me for Christmas 2021.

So very special!  So very memorable!  So much to say and not sure how to say it all!  Suffice it to say that I hope that my humble words will be enough!

My first Christmas gift came and it was an early one, when I arrived in November to visit with Mom and the family!  Truth be told, I was never sure that I would ever see my precious girl again but Jesus smiled on me and made it all happen.  I still cannot believe that I received this extra special gift from Heaven but, as they say, good things come to those who wait and believe in God!

Every morning I wake up thanking Jesus for being with Mom and every night before I fall asleep I thank Him for having brought me safely to her!

Then there was my second very special gift and again I thank Jesus for having delivered this one to me!  Yes, a childhood dream finally realized!  My law degree delivered on December 14 when Sam confirmed that I had indeed passed my final exam.

Truth be told, I was never sure that I would ever receive this elusive gift and I can only say that hard work paid off.  Those very early mornings of waking up to study, long hours during the day, and then simply falling asleep at night out of pure exhaustion!

My childhood dream realized and there was Mom right beside me to celebrate!  Thank you Jesus and thank you Mom!

A wonderful time: Cake-making with the family

This was one of the fun things for me for Christmas 2021; when the family, that is the ladies, came together to bake the Christmas cake.

For the most part I sat in the gallery chatting with Charmaine and catching up with her but it was so very good to hear the family chatting in the kitchen and to smell the cakes as they baked.

It was a pleasant, easy going, and overall comfortable day.  Everyone seemed to have had a good time.  At least Mom was able to share Granny’s precious Christmas cake recipe with the family and she also got to pass on some very important techniques.

Hats off to me! A childhood dream realized at last

As a child I aspired to be one and as a teen I carried the torch forward only to stop short when I entered university in Montreal.  I can only say that as a blind/vision-impaired person, the world around me was not ready to give me the chance to become a lawyer at that time.

In those days, most aspiring students at university had to find creative and innovative ways to keep up with class lectures, read texts, and work with professors to study for exams, hand in term papers and so much more.  In short, the term accessibility did not exist and alternate texts were few and far between.

I was always so very sorry that I did not get the chance to become a lawyer in those days but, as they say, nothing before its time. Then came December 14, 2021!

On that memorable evening I received the good news from  my dear friend Sam and then it was time to share with my precious mom.  We both shouted for joy!  We danced around her kitchen and she hugged me so tightly and kissed me!

Oh, boy!  A childhood dream come true finally and I thank God!  To my mom, my family, friends, and professors!  Thank you, thank you!

Happy days! Dining with the family at last

After almost two years, now finally!  At Mom’s well-worn dining table we gathered to celebrate Gayle’s birthday!  It was a delicious lunch and everyone was in high spirits.

We ate, laughed, shared stories, and thanked God that we were able to be together once more!  This is what the pandemic did to us and the rest of the world.

I simply enjoyed listening to each one’s voice!  I asked questions, received answers, and answered questions of my own.  I sat between Jeff and Mom and could not have asked for two better people on each side!  It seemed like just yesterday when we last gathered here.

It was a celebration well worth the hours that we spent traveling.  And I can only hope that our next celebration will come a lot sooner.
