Time to start celebrating

No time like the present for me, with my cat by my side, to start celebrating the Christmas holiday season. It’s funny how our pets really enjoy listening to a musical instrument.  Chester is no different and he simply loves it whenever I or anyone else plays the piano.

Thank goodness that he never comments on my piano playing but just having him hanging out with me is so much fun.

He does not know the words to the songs that I play but that’s just okay with me.  He does not know the melodies but it does not matter to me.  I am just happy to have him with me and he seems to enjoy it all.  Even my humming does not seem to affect him.

I'd like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas! Happy holidays! But most of all! A 2024 tthat will bring us lots of blessings, good things, and hopes and dreams to be fulfilled.

Very irretating! When Rico woke me up

Rico is Mom’s beloved stray cat pet.  He belongs to the community at large but Mom has adopted him and is always on the lookout for him and to make sure that he does not get into trouble.

Rico has a very distinguishable voice.  It is loud, high pitched, and strong.  So that the night he woke me up, it was very easy for me to know that it was him. I am not sure, though, why he was yelling so loudly!  Not sure if he was either fighting or what?

Celebrating the holidays with Timmy

Meet Timmy!  My best friend Char’s lovely little cat!  Timmy is always up for something new!  He is lively, playful, and never afraid to show off his prowess and skills.

No, I do not have a cat of my own, but at this time of the year I really would not mind having a kitty to keep me company!  I would feed him/her lots of treats and bowls of warm milk.  Then I would sit with him/her by a crackling fireside and simply enjoy their company!

I’d tell them lots of stories and then marvel at how well they listen and appreciate listening to me.

I'd like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas! Happy holidays! But most of all, a 2023 that will bring us lots of blessings, good things, and hopes and dreams to be fulfilled.

Maybe a snob? Rico’s strange behaviour

I would say that this elusive gentleman cat is probably not the friendliest that I have come across.  To be clear, he is an adopted cat that roams the neighbourhood, choosing to make our yard his home.

He is neutered and this was done so that he would not go around helping the cat population to increase.  So I am not sure if this is part of his standoff attitude towards us.

Whenever he chooses to visit my mom, he does so on his own terms.  He sneaks up the steps and then he goes directly to lie under the plants where the shade from the sun is the best.  As a result, I have never been able to play with him but the other day he came bounding up the steps and even allowed Mom to pat him on the head.

I am not sure if he was showing off because some kittens were in his company but there you have it.

I often hear him crying in the yard or maybe it can be called mewing.  Then there is the occasional fight and I can definitely recognize Rico’s very loud voice yelling at his intruders.

Oh well!  I kind of have a mental picture of what this gentleman cat looks like.

My neighbour's lovable cat: Saxby the cat

She belongs to my neighbour, Sandra, and she is a very entertaining little girl. I interact with her most times whenever Sandra and I are chatting at our doors.

Saxby comes out to check out what is going on. If she can get past Sandra she loves to speed down the hallway and Sandra needs to go after her to retrieve her. She is very fast and only does what most cats would do; just satisfying her curiosity.

She allows me to pet her whenever she is in Sandra's arms. She does not seem to be afraid to have me come near her. She is friendly and extremely likable.

Two different personalities: Missy and Grey Billy

Just two very interesting family cats with very different personalities. However, the one thing that they had in common was that they were both very pretty females!

Missy was an all black cat with fur that shone like the sun and was oh, so silky to the touch! Grey Billy was a lovely grey and white girl with fur as soft as down. Both she and Missy had tails that looked like fans. They were so very pretty to the eye and I am so very happy that I was able to see what they looked like.

Missy loved her privacy and whenever she wanted to get away from the noise she would clamber up the vines to her rooftop chamber, as we called it. There she would stay for most of the day, returning to us in the late evening. I had managed to hang a bell from her collar so that I could tell where she was at all times.

On the other hand, Grey Billy would stay with us for a great part of the day, lying quietly under a chair and snoozing happily. I would say that Grey Billy had the gentler and more playful disposition.

I simply loved to powder Missy and wrap a very damp, warm towel around her which she enjoyed. But for Grey Billy, she simply enjoyed posing for photos with me.

Those were two of our family cats and they shall forever remain in my memory!

A sweet cat: Meeting Timmy for the first time

Timmy is sure a lot different from his late brother Henry. The important thing, however, is that my best friend Char loves him to bits.

Timmy is very fast, very curious, and seems to just always be waiting to pounce. He is a very playful cat and has a lot of personality.

I met him in May 2019 when I spent my birthday in Montreal and stayed with Char.

I was always afraid that I would stumble over him as he seemed to be always under my feet but thank goodness that Char gave me some pointers. Altogether I got along just fine with this very friendly boy cat!

Here comes the cat who can tell the time! A picture of Pete

Now that I can no longer see pictures it means that I need to depend on others to tell me what things and persons look like.  And this was the case when my friend Debra sent me a picture of her beloved cat, Pete.

I guess that I had developed my own image of Pete but it was surely a different matter when Mom described him to me.

Somehow, I thought that Pete was grey but he is not.  However, I got his size right.  It does not matter; Pete is a lovable, loyal, and always surprising cat with an exciting personality.

Always a pleasure: A visit with Char's cat, Henry

I will be the first to admit that I am not really a cat person and now that I have precious little vision I have become very wary of them.

No, I do not mind playing with them but when it comes to having them in my bed the answer is a firm no.

Whenever I visit my best friend, Char, in Montreal I am always delighted and happy to see her cat, Henry.  He is quite friendly towards me.  He climbs onto my chair and proceeds to squeeze in beside me on the chair.  There he lies purring happily and he allows me to pet him and talk to him.

Then, whenever we have our meals in the kitchen he climbs onto the kitchen table and starts to inspect everything.  I think that he feels that this particular table is his and that he is only doing me a favor by letting me share it with him or should I say he allows me to share it with him.

Whatever it is, Henry is a really enjoyable cat to be around.  He is so attached to Char and is always seeking her attention.  He is constantly talking to her in his own way and simply loves his food but Char needs to give it to him in small amounts so as to avoid accidents.

He is just a hunter! Rico and the bird

He had only done what normal cats do, that is following his natural instincts, but for some reason it did not sit very well with me on this day.

There I was, working away at Mom's dining room table on a quiet Saturday afternoon and suddenly my concentration was interrupted by the screaming of a bird.  No, it did not take me very long to know what was going on but unfortunately for the pretty little dove it was too late.

Rico, our adopted outdoor cat, had somehow managed to capture an unsuspecting bird victim and now he was going to have him for dinner.  There was nothing that anyone could have done.

It always bothers me whenever such incidents take place and even more when I am unable to see what is going on.   Needless to say that Rico certainly got a huge scolding and tongue lashing from all of us and I do believe that he somehow understood. 😊!

Remembering - Protecting my food from kitty

This is almost always the case each time I go to visit my best friend, Char, in Montreal.  Me doing my level best to ensure that her cat does not sneak by to sample my food.

I know that it is only natural for cats to be inquisitive anytime they smell food but even more so when visitors invade their home.  So I come prepared to protect my food.

The thing is that when you are visually impaired and do not have enough vision to see when kitty is approaching, you run into a challenge.  Add to this the fact that kitty walks very softly, too softly for you to hear him coming and by the time you realize it, his head is practically in your plate or bowl.

I have grown used to kitty now so it is not a problem for me, just something to be aware of each time I visit Char.

The new kid in town

Yes, he is indeed the new kid in town!  Ever since his mom, Gladys, deserted her kids and took off for parts unknown, little Rico, as I have named him, is now the new kid in town.

From what I can piece together from various stories offered by the workers, one day Gladys simply walked out of the compound, never looking back.  Then some of the workers took the 3 remaining kittens to a busy mall and left them there, sure that they would be taken by passers by.

They were almost right.  Two of them were taken within a day or so but there was one little guy who managed to make it back to our compound and we still do not know how he did it.

The workers were astounded and welcomed him back, calling him family, and I named him Rico.  I am told that he looks just like Mama Gladys and it is probably why he is as loved as his mom.

The workers feed him, protect him, and give him lots of love.  I can only picture what he looks like and I can't wait to see him again when I visit my mom in June 2016.

Visiting with the newborn kittens

A few months ago our adopted cat, Gladys, gave birth to seven little ones.  Such was my desire to reach out and touch them that on a quiet Sunday morning, just days after they were born, I did just that.

Gladys did not seem to mind as she simply went for a stroll when we came to visit.  One of the guys picked up the two ginger colored kittens and then he allowed me to play with them.

I gently touched their tiny forms.  They were clinging to each other and seemed oblivious to my stroking them but they were so soft, so tiny, and so innocent.

Their tiny paws were so soft and their small heads did not move much.  Their little bodies vibrated a bit but apart from that they did not react.

I marveled at these new additions to my circle of favorite friends. I wished them well and then sent them on their way back to their mom.  Of course, I could not see them but just touching them and running my fingers gently through their warm fur was enough for me.

Protecting the birds from the cat

This was one of my favorite activities for summer 2015 when I spent the summer at my mom's home. Protecting the birds from the cat!

Her name was Gladys and she was our beloved adopted cat and they were the birds out there just trying to protect themselves and their young ones from Gladys.

You see, Gladys was relentless. She was very swift and not very willing to listen to good advice, so to speak. She thought that she could catch them whenever she pleased.

I'd be sitting in Mom's dining room working away and then I would hear the birds outside on Mom's patio making low, sharp sounds. The sounds were urgent-like and I would know that something was wrong.

So I would rush outside and onto the patio and there she would be, sitting quietly looking up into the trees. Most of the time I would not even know that she was there but Mom would see me going towards the patio and she would look through her kitchen window and tell me that Gladys was prowling around.

As soon as I would open the back door Gladys would be off like a shot, running down the steps without a sound and I would be left to shout at her departing back.

This happened several times over the summer until the day Gladys gave birth to seven lovely kittens. No more time for Gladys to disturb those wonderful little birds.

My introduction to cats

Ask me and I would readily tell you that dogs are my favorite pets but this does not mean that I do not have some fondness for the felines. As a kid we had many cats, ones that came in and out of our home freely.

My first memories of one of our cats is that of Margie, a pretty little black cat who used to jump onto the counter in our kitchen to have a look at me. At that time the counter and I were of the same height so it was quite easy for Margie and me to be at eye level.

There she was on the counter, standing quietly and looking into my eyes, and there I was looking back at her. In those days I could not really see very well as I had a bit of vision but not enough to really see all of Margie. However, I do remember her as seen through the haze of my poor vision.

Margie still stands out in my memory and will probably do so for as long as I live. Just a curious little lady cat who loved to stare at me whenever she could.
