Learning card making by phone

I can tell you that thanks to my friend, Denise Sanders, I have now found a new way to be creative. Yes! It is all about card making and I am really enjoying it.

Denise and I have had several sessions via phone. She is probably one of the most patient teachers and she has once again shown that it is indeed possible for the blind to lead the blind!

You see, we are both blind and it has not stopped us from having so much fun with our card making hobby. Denise teaches and I follow her instructions. We exchange ideas and we allow our imagination to roam and wonder. I have so much fun with this wonderful lady and very good friend.

Thanks so much, boss, for having introduced me to this new hobby.

Learning to look after the orchid

I have always loved plants and flowers and one of the presents that I received for my birthday in 2015 was a beautiful orchid. Of course, it was described to me and after everyone had gone home and the night had arrived, I tiptoed up to my new friend and took a few minutes to get familiar with her.

My new orchid had two flowers on it and some thick leaves. It was tall and a bit slender but I particularly loved the small flowers. Before my friend, Gabriella, had left that day she gave me a quick lesson on how to look after my orchid. She told me to place two ice cubes in its pot. One on each side of the pot and to do it once weekly.

My beautiful orchid is very well and alive today. I tiptoe up to her pot every day and I run my fingers gently along her leaves. I know what orchids look like because of my former vision so I can use my memory to help me along.

The Japanese lunch

In May 2015 my friend Gabriella took me for my birthday lunch and this time around it was a sumptuous Japanese lunch. On this day, however, Gabriella made sure that I had a full blown description of my surroundings.

Gabriella is one of the few persons who really takes the time to describe things to me. My mom is another and I was not sorry after listening to Gabriella's descriptions.

She paid particular attention to two men who were enjoying a large boat of sushi. She told me that the boat was about two feet long and six inches wide and that it was loaded with all kinds of sushi pieces and as Gabriella described my surroundings to me I ate happily and envisioned everything that she was describing to me.

I particularly enjoyed her description of the large boat. I could practically see the sushi pieces dancing invitingly in front of my sightless eyes and I could envision the two men enjoying their delicious meal.

At the end of our lunch I can tell you that I was one of the happiest persons on earth for that day. Great food! Great company, and one of my best friends describing everything to me!

Remembering the crabs

This is probably another of my favorite childhood memories but in those days I did not have enough vision to clearly see them. So I had to depend on the descriptions of siblings, parents, and other family members.

Yet, for all of this I managed to develop my very own version of a crab and I have to admit that my version was not very close to reality.

I imagined the poor little crabs to be gigantic with huge claws and pincers. I was always afraid of them and one day I was baby sitting one in a paper cup. I stuck my fingers in and it almost had them for its supper.

Then the day came and I was able to see the crabs for real. No, they were not what I had imagined them to be. No, not too cute looking but nowhere as big as I had imagined them to be.

My first opportunity to see what a crab really looked like came on a warm sunny day at the beach and my dad drew my attention to a small red crab crawling along. He allowed me to look at it for a few minutes and then he picked it up and placed it gently in my hand.

He told me to stand very still and stood beside me as the crab crawled around in my hand. Nothing to it, the crab never bit me. It simply crawled around and after some moments I placed him on the sand and he just simply
scurried away.

Another cherished memory for my memory bank.

Trying to fix an iPhone

Have you ever tried to help fix an iPhone with no screen showing? This is what happened to me a few weeks ago as I offered to help solve the problem of a sick iPhone.

It belonged to my niece, Martha, and before I tried my sister-in-law had told me that the screen was black. This somehow did not worry me too much as long as I have voice-over it does not matter whether or not the screen is black.

So off I went, hoping and praying that I could solve the mystery. I did a hard reset by pressing the two appropriate buttons and the encouraging indicator of a vibration soon greeted me, but alas! My luck ended right there.

I could hear the voice-over telling me that I was cycling through the various versions of the hello screen but with no sighted indicators to help me tap on the right spot, nothing could be done. I could not even get the iPhone to respond to my taps with clicking sounds.

So much for my having tried to help. In short, neither sighted assistance nor I could solve the problem.

Somewhere over the rainbow

It is not very often that anyone has the good fortune and privilege to see a rainbow in the sky but I can tell you that when I had my sight, I was one of those persons.

I am not sure how many rainbows I got to see before I lost my sight but how well I do remember a rainbow in the sky. There it was, just literally lying there in the sky. So very colorful, so very peaceful, and one of the prettiest things to behold!

On almost every occasion I would be sitting in a chair outside and on my own and then I would happen to look skyward and voila! There was my pretty rainbow just lazily looking down at me!

Some of the time I would sit there just staring upwards and then if I felt like it I would call to others to come and see but for the most part I would prefer to enjoy my rainbow by myself.

The other day my mom spotted one in the sky while we were sitting outdoors on her patio and she proceeded to describe it to me. My memory began to wander back to those other days when I was able to see it for myself.

The rainbow had not changed; it was still its loveliest self. Colorful, large, and simply lying there in the sky on a peaceful late evening.

Websites still inaccessible

In my personal opinion, I don't think that we will ever have the luxury of saying that all websites are accessible. No, not possible given the continuing evolution of technology.

The truth is that today a website may be accessible but tomorrow it becomes somewhat inaccessible due to a change as a result of software updates.

This cannot be helped so what do we do? Well, the best that we could possibly hope for is to do our best to ensure that when software updates take place, accessibility requirements are included before the updates are implemented.

Impossible, you may be asking? No! We just need to become more conscious of what needs to be remembered and included.

A need to identify those bottles of pills

I am always so careful to ensure that whenever I need to get more than one bottle of pills from my pharmacy, be they prescriptions or not, I have to ensure that I know which bottle contains which pills.

True it is that I could identify through different sizes and different covers, and many times through the different shapes and smells of the pills themselves. But what if some of the bottles are of the same size and the pills feel the same?

Sure! It happens from time to time and you may be wondering then what do I do.

First off, when I realize that there could be an identification problem, I get to work with my friendly pharmacist. Next and very carefully, I ask the pharmacist to tell me which bottle is which and then I use tape to help me.

I put the tape on the bottles but there is more than this to it. If two bottles are of the same size, then tape goes onto one bottle and the other is left without any tape. The trick is for me to remember which bottle of pills has the tape.

So this is my trick. I go in alphabetical order. Example: Aspirins and Gravol. I put tape on the bottle of Aspirins and the bottle of Gravol is left without any tape. If I have three bottles then Aspirins will have the tape on the cover. Gravol will have tape at the bottom of its bottle, and Tylenol will not have any tape.

I do my best to ensure that all bottles of pills are easy to identify for me and my friendly pharmacist is usually so ready and willing to help me.

Exams at Seneca College

For the past two years I have been writing my law exams at Seneca College and I am happy to report that it is such a joy to be working with Karen Newman and her team.

They are all so very helpful and eager to ensure that exam day is a breeze for me. Before exam day I usually visit Karen and her staff and we spend about half an hour to ensure that everything is in order for the big exams.

We test the access technology software on the desktop computer to ensure that it is working just right. We test it with MS Word and with Notepad to make sure that everything is going to work smoothly.

Then we test out the headphones and finally we make sure that the room is all ready for me. My friend Gabriella comes along for moral support and I am sure glad that she comes.

This is my experience with Seneca and I would not trade it for the world. I thank Karen Newman and her team for all of their help.

My commitment to research

This is one of the ways that I use to give back to society. At the present time there is nothing more that doctors can do to restore my vision. However, I remain hopeful. But in the meantime, I give back through my contributions to research.

I give to research initiatives for kids. I give to research on cancer and I give to research for solutions to sight loss.

For my dear friend, Gabriella, and her husband Randy, maybe my small contribution can help Randy and others overcome the heavy hand of cancer. My brother, Robert, could not be saved from cancer but hopefully someone else can.

I cannot benefit from any surgery to restore my vision at the present time, but who knows! Maybe my tiny contribution can help to find a solution before long.

Then there are our precious kids. It seems so unfair to see these little ones lose their medical battles at such an early age, but who knows! Maybe my small donations can help in some way.

Finding the microphone

I found this to be a challenge at a recent meeting that I attended. There I was, seated at a table with others with microphones placed close to us, but darned if I could find mine when I went to make a comment.

I began groping to my right and then to my left and then in front of me but when your friend, who is also blind, is sitting to your right and tries to help you, it turns out to be a bit of a madcap chase.

Then someone sighted is sitting to your left but somehow they do not seem to be aware that you are searching for your microphone. So what do you do?

I had no choice but to interrupt proceedings and ask for help. It turns out that it was not that bad after all. Several pairs of helping hands came to my rescue.

Navigating my salad bowl

This is one of the few things that often gives me a bit of a challenge but at the end of it all it turns out to be just another smile for me.

Just try to picture it. You go to a function or you are in a restaurant and a bowl of salad is placed in front of you. If you ordered the salad then you know what to expect in your salad bowl but if you are at a function and you are waiting for your meal along with other guests, then chances are that as a blind person you have no idea what is going to be in your salad bowl.

So, there you are with your salad bowl that is piled high with yummy greens and they are sprinkled liberally with salad dressing. Or, if you are lucky, your salad dressing has been placed in a small container at the side of your bowl and both are sitting on a plate.

Most of the greens are either huge chunks or pieces and now it is time for you to eat your salad. Easy as it goes, you need to be careful so as not to spill any of the contents onto your lap. Or even more, not to have the dressing drip onto your clothes.

This is normally the case for anyone but as a blind person I need to be extra careful. So how do I deal with it? I start by asking someone at the table to describe the bowl's contents to me. From there, I decide upon my plan of attack. I go very gingerly trying to cut the large pieces while ensuring that the contents remain in the bowl.

I am very gentle and make sure that I eat from front to back. That is, I start with pieces closest to me and proceed on to the back. If I have to sprinkle my own dressing from the container at the side of the bowl then I need to be extra careful.

Challenging, you say? Sure, but it is all in a day's work.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly accessibility advocate, wishing you a terrific day.

"Each time we raise our voice at someone else we are engaging in bullying! Each time we raise our hands to slap or punch someone else we are also engaging in bullying and each time we engage in actions to either manipulate or force someone else to do what we want we are also engaging in bullying!

There is no room in this world for bullying and each day we fail to take action against bullying it is another day that we allow others to bully us and our kids. Our heroes and role models are the ones who have made us proud; those brave young men and women who gave their lives for us in past wars and those who continue to do so. They are not the ones who choose to be racists and those who believe that their bad behaviour in public is acceptable.

Granny and me on Good Friday

Oh, how much I still cherish these very close and precious memories. After all of the years, I still remember each Good Friday.

It would be night time and the rest of the family would be off doing their own stuff and Granny and I would be lying quietly in bed. The lights would be off in our room and Granny would start telling me biblical stories, all about what happened to Jesus when he carried his cross up until he was put to death.

I never got tired of listening to Granny's soft voice as she related these stories, year after year. She really enjoyed telling them to me as much as I truly enjoyed listening to her.

Sometimes, our dog Yella would come into our room and lie quietly between our beds and I am sure that she, too, loved listening to Granny. I would hear Yella breathing softly on the floor but more often than not she would drift off to sleep as I would hear her snoring in low and muffled sounds.

Granny would tell her stories for about an hour or so and then she would say goodnight to me and then she, too, would be asleep shortly afterwards.

I would try to stay awake for as long as I could, remembering Granny's stories and thanking God for my wonderful grandparent.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly accessibility advocate, wishing you a terrific day.

Granny and me with the crossword puzzles

Most of the time it was a Sunday afternoon, just before nap time, as Granny and I lay in our respective beds in her large room. Granny would have the daily newspapers spread out on her chest and I would be lying on my back in my nice comfortable bed and then away we would go.

Granny would start reading the headlines to me. Next she would go to the comics and then finally she would end up at the crosswords section. I would always be waiting anxiously for her to get to the crosswords as they were my favorites.

Granny loved them, too, and as we worked through them it was Granny who did almost all of the solving of the puzzles and, boy, was she good. I would do my best to keep up with her but shamefully! After about half hour or so I would be fast asleep and by the time I woke up, Granny herself was asleep and snoring gently.

I would then lie quietly waiting for her to wake up and most times I did not have to wait very long. Granny would wake up, gather her newspapers, and then call to me. Then we would both get out of our beds and with arms around each other we would go looking for the rest of the family.
