My new device: Getting used to my new iPhone

It always takes a wee bit more time for me whenever I get a new device and welcome it into my home. This was the case with my new iPhone 16E.

Yes, she is definitely a bit different. She is different in size. I do not have any screen protecting dots on my screen to guide me, and there are some minor differences to get used to. Turning on and off my new iPhone is different.

I have found quicker ways to access my mail and What’s app, and the layout in the phone app is a bit different when it comes to calling my friends via Facetime.

Once I get the hang of things re the layout, it will all be good.

Blown away! The iPhone Translator

Guess I am never too old to learn, eh? The other day when Stephie and I went shopping at a Chinese supermarket, we were challenged to communicate with one of their agents. He did not speak much English and our skills to communicate in his language were zero.

So,what did he do? He pulled out his trusty iPhone and through gesturing and pointing, we managed to somehow tell him what we were seeking.

Presto!  He found what we were looking for in no time. Another wonder of the iPhone translator.

She was my daily companion: Saying so long to my faithful iPhone

Ah, yes, and just call me a sop!  That’s very okay.
My favourite iPhone stayed with me for four glorious years and it does not matter that she was not top of the line.
She served me above the call of duty.
She was easy to use and fitted neatly into my purse.

I had no difficulty learning how to use her and when it came time to part company!
It had to happen. Now she is in iPhone Heaven with my other iPhones!

New technology for Mom: Mom and What's app

It was just so funny and enjoyable to see how Mom took to communicating on What’s app.  She took to it like a duck to water!

On Easter Sunday, 2023,  I used What’s App to call Jeff and Gayle and I then handed my iPhone to Mom.  Lo and behold!  She was so pleased to see Jeff and Gayle’s faces on the screen and had no problem chatting away.

I guess that technology does work at times, eh?

A Godsend: Taking images with iPhones

I can't tell you how much this technology impresses me despite my not being able to take advantage of it. No, as a vision-impaired person I am unable to do so but my friends and family are always willing to step in and help
whenever I need images and pictures to be taken.

It comes in greatly handy whenever I need to send forms to such recipients as universities, government agencies, and to my doctors.

In so many cases these days, I am often asked to have documents scanned and sent along, but alas! I am not able to do so and here is where the iPhone comes to the rescue.

My friends or family take a picture of said document, send it to me, and then I am able to email it.

My golden friend: My new iPhone

Call me crazy but I am extremely attached to my iPhones. When I had to say so long to my little yellow iPhone 5C, it was very painful for me.  I bade her a fond farewell and then I turned to my new friend, an iPhone 8 that is gold in colour.

She is fast and so very easy to navigate.  She has so many new features that I truly like.  Powering on is very easy and powering off is a gem.  My new little friend is everything that I had ever hoped for plus so much more.

Ah, yes!  The joys of technology but there are also the infrequent times when technology can be your enemy or, at best, a thorn in one's side.

My yellow friend forever: My iPhone and me

She is yellow; but alas!  I cannot see her colour.  She is small and nifty and fits neatly into my purse.  She is an iPhone 5c and she does everything ask of her.

I am not a constant user of my iPhone. I use it to read my news, check into Facebook, and keep up to date with what my hockey team, the Montreal Canadiens, is doing.

I back up my data to iCloud regularly and send off text messages.  In short, I use my iPhone as needed but she is a good little friend.  I have placed a screen protector on her screen and this is a shield that contains dots to help me navigate my screen.

I know that some day, very soon, I'll be trading her in for a more powerful iPhone.  I have had her now for two years and I'll never complain about her.

An amazing experience: Gabriella and her picture taking

I am always so very happy whenever someone can take pictures with their iPhone and then send them to me.  There is a procedure for this entire process.

First, Gabriella and I decide what she is going to take.
Next, Gabriella takes the pictures with her iPhone.
Next, she looks at it to see if it has come out fine.
Then she sends it to my email address.
Finally, I detach and store the picture and then send it along to friends and family.

Now that I no longer have enough vision to see what she has taken, I need to depend on others to describe things for me. But my active imagination is always eagerly waiting to hear.

Gabriella has also found another purpose for her picture taking and this is that whenever she wants me to read a business card or something that has come in the mail, she takes a picture with her iPhone and then emails it to me.

A trick that works: Shaking the tins

A few months ago I had to employ one of my favorite tricks in order to determine what was in each tin.

At first I had some idea what each of the three tins should contain, but in order to make sure I had to shake each in turn.  This came after I had somehow mixed them up in my pantry.

So off I went, getting down to work.  True it is that the shape of the soup can was the first telltale but I needed to know the difference between tomato soup and mushroom soup.

Bingo!  I guessed correctly. It was the mushroom because upon shaking it the contents did not make any sound.  Mushroom soup is usually much thicker than tomato soup.

Then I had to decipher between a tin of beans and a tin of sweet potatoes.  As I already knew what to expect re listening to the various sounds, the sound of the tin of sweet potatoes sounds a bit more fluid than that of the tin of beans.

Of course, I could have taken out my iPhone and used the appropriate app to help me out, but on this day I was just a tad too lazy to do this.

Nerve racking: When my iPhone went dead

I thought that I had done everything right before going to bed that evening. I dutifully plugged in my iPhone, made sure that it was well plugged in, and then I went off to bed.

When I awoke the next morning I reached for my trusted iPhone and pressed the button to turn it on.  Nothing, no sound, no response!

Of course, I began to panic.  What had happened?  Was my poor little iPhone dead for good?  I rebooted it twice and still no response.  I took it to another outlet and plugged it in and still no response.

I had to hurry to get my things together because I had to be at a meeting in the next half hour.  I gingerly placed my dead iPhone in its little case, showered quickly, dressed and packed my stuff hurriedly, and then I rushed out of my room and ran towards the elevator.

I made it to my meeting and had a few minutes to ask one of my colleagues to take a look at my iPhone.  Bingo!  The battery had run down and it was all because of the fact that although I had plugged in my iPhone all right, the outlet had not been emitting any electricity because the control switch in my room had been turned off.

This switch was located somewhere on a wall and I never knew this and with not enough vision to see lights or anything else, that was the problem.

All in a day's journey.

Trying to fix an iPhone

Have you ever tried to help fix an iPhone with no screen showing? This is what happened to me a few weeks ago as I offered to help solve the problem of a sick iPhone.

It belonged to my niece, Martha, and before I tried my sister-in-law had told me that the screen was black. This somehow did not worry me too much as long as I have voice-over it does not matter whether or not the screen is black.

So off I went, hoping and praying that I could solve the mystery. I did a hard reset by pressing the two appropriate buttons and the encouraging indicator of a vibration soon greeted me, but alas! My luck ended right there.

I could hear the voice-over telling me that I was cycling through the various versions of the hello screen but with no sighted indicators to help me tap on the right spot, nothing could be done. I could not even get the iPhone to respond to my taps with clicking sounds.

So much for my having tried to help. In short, neither sighted assistance nor I could solve the problem.

When the doctor almost forgot me

Every time I think of this incident I have to smile to myself. Some time ago I visited my family physician for a regular check up and as customary the receptionist escorted me into a patient room and asked me to wait for my doctor. She told me that it would not be too long.

So I settled down to wait but after a half hour had gone by I began to worry because my doctor is always on time. I allowed five minutes to go by and then I decided to take action.

Thank goodness for my iPhone. I pulled it out of my purse and dialed my doctor's office number and bingo! As soon as the receptionist heard my voice she sprang into action and soon enough I heard her running down the hall towards the room in which I was sitting, followed by my doctor.

My iPhone sure saved the day for me because if I did not have it with me I would have been in great difficulty to find my way to the receptionist's desk.

The receptionist had made a small error but that's okay. She is always so very conscientious with me.

Setting up my new iPhone

In late 2014 my iPhone 4 quit on me and I was forced to get a new iPhone. I knew, however, that setting up the new iPhone was not going to be an easy task for me as a blind person, due to my limited technical expertise along with having to deal with some visual cues on my screen. But I will say that after having had my friend, Imran, help me, it was not as bad as I had first thought.

The experience left me with a new appreciation for technology, and in addition I will say that setting it up was much less painful than if I were setting up a new computer system. The big problem came from finding someone at my cell phone company to help out. Especially so when Imran and I had to keep explaining things to the customer service rep with regard to certain contract conditions that they had imposed upon me.

Imran spent a lot of time making sure that the apps on my original phone were re-initialized and that the new iPhone remained in sync with my iPad. At the end of the day, a very long and tedious experience. Thank goodness for Imran.

When the iPhone lost its wireless

Another memory for me to smile over as on that day it was quite interesting. I am not sure if there was any sort of visual indicator to tell me that something was wrong with my iPhone but as a blind person I had to find out the hard way.

The iPhone simply quit on me that day. This being that, I was unable to access my favorite apps to read my newspaper. So off I went to check things out with my other devices, and presto! They all worked except for my poor iPhone.

So after figuring out what the problem was, and after my friend informed me that it would cost more than the price of a new iPhone to fix things, I had to bite the dust and purchase a new iPhone.

As I said above, I have no idea if there was any sort of visual indicator to tell me that the wireless had died but there you have it. An experience for me to remember.

The black screen

This is what it is like for me any time my software stops speaking to me. The screen may have something on it but, alas! I can no longer see the screen so it might as well be black to me. However, I recently discovered a very useful app that can help me anytime I run into this type of situation.

It is called the KNFB reader app and this is what I have started to do. Each time my software does not speak to me, that is it stops speaking to me, I take out my iPhone and load my KNFB reader app. Then I take a picture with it and presto! I am told what is on my screen. Nifty, aye?

Now I am able to better handle those so-called black screens and I do not need to panic or go looking for sighted help.

Mom with my iPhone

I know that the iPhone could be a real technical challenge for those who did not grow up with technology but I have managed to introduce my mom to my iPhone. She loves to read the important news on it or look at photos. That is, whenever I have something to show her. So this is how it goes.

I tell her that I have something for her to see and I tell her what it is. If she wants to read or see it then I saunter over with my iPhone in hand. She takes it very gently and reads and/or looks at what is on the screen. She often reads it aloud so that we can both interact and comment at the same time. It is so much fun because whereas in the past it was she who had to bring things to me, now it is the opposite.

It is something like the blind leading the blind but in a much more meaningful way. Mom is getting more used to seeing me with my iPhone but I doubt that she would ever use one on her own.

"Each time we raise our voice at someone else we are engaging in bullying! Each time we raise our hands to slap or punch someone else we are also engaging in bullying and each time we engage in actions to either manipulate or force someone else to do what we want we are also engaging in bullying!

There is no room in this world for bullying and each day we fail to take action against bullying it is another day that we allow others to bully us and our kids. Our heroes and role models are the ones who have made us proud; those brave young men and women who gave their lives for us in past wars and those who continue to do so. They are not the ones who choose to be racists and those who believe that their bad behaviour in public is acceptable.

I write and record audio mysteries that are being used at such events as murder mystery evenings as well as at public awareness and team building events. I promote understanding, tolerance, and problem solving and my audio mysteries continue to be broadcasted around the world and you can listen to them anywhere! On the plane or train! In the car or right there in your home! On your i device or computer!

Unable to hear as I cross the street

Yes, this is indeed a very common problem for me. Especially so when there is either a lot of noise around me or whenever the wind is blowing hard and loud across my path. It can also happen whenever I am out in a heavy rainfall.

This is why I have to concentrate extra hard whenever I am crossing the street and this is not really a problem or challenge that is only for a blind or partially sighted person. I am very sure that sighted persons are also opened to this type of challenge, as well, but what I can tell you is this. This type of challenge is even greater when you are totally blind.

When I had functional vision, I could depend on visual cues to help me cross safely, but now that I have no more functional vision, those visual cues are no longer available to me. This is why I have to concentrate and focus more deeply and carefully.

Accordingly, I do not walk and talk on my iPhone at the same time. I do not listen to music as I walk along, and I certainly do not do anything else as I cross the street.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly accessibility advocate, wishing you a terrific day.

The challenges of accessing wireless at hotels

As a regular traveler I can honestly tell you that in the general scheme of things, when it comes to how staff at the reception desk deals with me as a blind person whenever I ask for access to their network, it is indeed a mixed bag.

It is generally assumed that whenever one stays as a guest at most hotels these days here in North America, wireless access is a given. All well and good but when you throw in the variable of a blind person who needs access, for some odd reason everything seems to become a wee bit confusing. Then you add the variable of staff not quite knowing how to give you that access because their first language is not English and bingo! Time to unpack your patience.

This is what happened to me a few months ago when I stayed at a hotel here in Toronto. First there was the language barrier. Then came the staff at the reception desk who got all turned around because my iPhone was speaking! After much explanation she finally got it. It was amazing to see how confused she became when she heard the voice and then I had to really egg her on to help me.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan enjoying my travels.

My preference for apps

Call me lazy but at the end of the day I do not think that I would be the only one choosing to go down this path. In short, I prefer to use apps to keep in touch with my favorite websites. I find it easier to use my iPhone to surf whenever I want to do this quickly. I can do it easily and most of the apps that I have on my iPhone can do the job quite nicely for me.

I read my newspapers, check on my favorite hockey team (the Montreal Canadiens), and communicate with others on Skype through my iPhone. Sometimes I even use my iPhone to communicate on Twitter and soon I'll be using it for Facebook.

Apps are getting easier to use with each passing day. So many people are developing apps for all kinds of things and I am even using apps for other functions such as scanning and reading, for checking out bar codes, plus much more. Ah yes! My preference for apps. No, I will not be deserting Internet surfing through my computer any time soon but I am sure having fun with my apps.
