A nifty little gadget: Using my light detector to discover

Oh boy, and how things have changed so much over the last few years. Now I have the choice of either using an app or a stand alone gadget. And this is what I did recently, I preferred to use my stand alone gadget to detect light.

I needed to determine if the bulbs in my office were lighting up. So, I went to work to pull out my nifty little light detector. I turned it on and waited for it to tell me if there was light. It did not buzz so I knew that there was no light.

I could have used an app on my I device to do the same thing but this worked just fine.

A great way: Working with Aira

The Aira app has literally turned into a gold mine for me; simply wonderful and it's just too bad that I did not take advantage of this app before now.

As a vision-impaired user, I am simply in awe of how much Aira agents can help me.  Anything from identifying documents to creating images from them and sending them to me, to then putting the text into an email and sending them to me, and even to help with the identification of tins, cans, and boxes.

The Aira agents are so very  helpful, supportive, and so ready to go the extra mile.  They are warm and welcoming and I just can't say enough good things about them.

Frustration! Without a color detector

With so many apps now available to help a blind person detect colors, you would think that I would not be too upset if I did not have my cherished color detector at my fingertips.  However, alas!  This is not quite so for me.

My cherished color detector stopped working about a month ago and I am still deciding whether or not to replace it.  Truth be told, I quite like it because I don't have to turn on my i device to use a color detector app.

The stand alone color detector app works by batteries and is very easy to use.  It is portable and announces colors in a very clear voice.  It is accurate enough for me to be able to make full use of it.

Call me old fashioned but this is my preference.

The black screen

This is what it is like for me any time my software stops speaking to me. The screen may have something on it but, alas! I can no longer see the screen so it might as well be black to me. However, I recently discovered a very useful app that can help me anytime I run into this type of situation.

It is called the KNFB reader app and this is what I have started to do. Each time my software does not speak to me, that is it stops speaking to me, I take out my iPhone and load my KNFB reader app. Then I take a picture with it and presto! I am told what is on my screen. Nifty, aye?

Now I am able to better handle those so-called black screens and I do not need to panic or go looking for sighted help.

Some inaccessible apps

I am always happy whenever I come upon or stumble across an app that is accessible to me as a blind person. There are so many to name and it is probably best for me not to single out any of them. However, there are those that are, indeed, still inaccessible and these are the ones that I'll focus on today.

What exactly is an inaccessible app? Well, an inaccessible app is one that I, as a blind person, am unable to use independently and, accordingly, I need sighted assistance to use it. It means that the menu options on the app's home screen are either too crowded or too busy for me to navigate in a meaningful manner. It is difficult to find what I seek because things are not well laid out and apps may not be well designed to enable me to hear all that is on the screen.

Things are definitely moving in the right direction as far as more accessible apps being made available to blind persons. Here's wishing for continuing trends in this arena.

My preference for apps

Call me lazy but at the end of the day I do not think that I would be the only one choosing to go down this path. In short, I prefer to use apps to keep in touch with my favorite websites. I find it easier to use my iPhone to surf whenever I want to do this quickly. I can do it easily and most of the apps that I have on my iPhone can do the job quite nicely for me.

I read my newspapers, check on my favorite hockey team (the Montreal Canadiens), and communicate with others on Skype through my iPhone. Sometimes I even use my iPhone to communicate on Twitter and soon I'll be using it for Facebook.

Apps are getting easier to use with each passing day. So many people are developing apps for all kinds of things and I am even using apps for other functions such as scanning and reading, for checking out bar codes, plus much more. Ah yes! My preference for apps. No, I will not be deserting Internet surfing through my computer any time soon but I am sure having fun with my apps.

Those wonderful apps

This is probably one of my most delightful and biggest introductions to mobile devices! Ah yes, some of those most wonderful apps. I am like a kid in a candy shop when it comes to exploring and discovering some of those great apps. Especially so when I find them to be most accessible for a blind person such as me.

There are so many to mention but here are just a few: Skype, Twitter, BBC news, CBC news, CNN, Canadiens hockey, Westminster chimes, and the list goes on.

I am presently in the hunt for camera apps for blind persons, great scanning and bar code apps, and apps for reading my favorite books. I told you, I am like a kid in a candy shop when it comes to the world of apps and I am very sure that with time it will only get better.

I have an iPhone and an iPad and I have gotten much better at using my fingers to get around on the screen. I use tactile screen protectors which are comprised of dots to help me navigate and for insurance I use devices such as a Braille Pen and Braille Sense to navigate faster. These are 2 very powerful Braille displays in their own right.
