Practical and logical: Dealing with notices

If I receive my notice electronically then there is no problem, but whenever I receive a notice that has either been stuck in my door or it comes in the mail then here is where the challenge arises and my frustration only grows.

I am blind/vision-impaired and cannot read printed notices.  How many times have I begged those utility companies that I deal with, others who I work with, and those who should know better to please change the way they send me notes?

One of these days, I may just send them a Braille note and see how they feel.

No way to tell: No Braille on the microwave buttons

This is how it is at Mom’s home.  At my home I have a talking microwave but at her home there is no Braille and her microwave is not a talking one.

So I do not have the ability to warm things for myself or to use her microwave in any way. In short, I am unable to cook in her microwave.

This makes me feel quite out of sorts, so to speak!  And how can I rectify this?  I’ll suggest to Mom that I put some raised dots on her microwave the next time I visit.  It is not very hard to do but we shall see.

A real necessity: Keeping the gift bags straight

 

At Christmas time, 2022, I had to come up with a foolproof way to keep my gift bags straight.  For if I did not then I would probably end up giving the wrong gift to the wrong person and this sure happened a few years ago when I was not careful enough.

So, now I find ways to keep them in a logical order before giving them to the right recipients. With practically no vision to speak of, I place removable braille labels on each bag and I make sure that I can remove them just before I give them to the person.

This I find to be the most affective and foolproof method that works for me!

Most important: Identifying a package

 

 If I want to ensure that I know what is in a package after I have wrapped it and before putting it in my freezer, then I need to find a way to identify its contents before packing it away in my freezer.  

This is what most of us do, sighted or not.  So, no concern  about removing the wrong package if we follow this rule.  No excuses.

When it comes to packages in my freezer, I normally label them with Braille labels or I find another way to do so. This does not mean that on occasion I do not slip up and forget and then I run into big trouble.

A new way: Straightening the table runner

 

I am just not sure if I could blame this on being vision impaired or maybe I am just a klutz!  Whatever it is, I seem to have always had difficulty laying things straight no matter how hard I have tried.

So, the other day I made an extra effort to make sure that the runner on my dining table was straight.  I had some time on my hands to spare and I did my best to make good on it.

I brought out my Braille ruler and proceeded to carefully measure from end to end.  I took my time and made sure that my ruler did not shift and after a few minutes I am sure that I had it right.  At least I was satisfied that I had.

I recently bought a click ruler which gives me the opportunity to measure up to 36 inches at a time and this ruler is much more sturdy than my other Braille ruler. I am going to use this when I return to my pottery studio.

A necessary challenge: Taking precautions with medications

I do not think that in the normal scheme of things that I am any different from anyone else.  Maybe the only big difference is that I must ensure that I do not mix up my bottles and that I know what is in each bottle or container at all times.

If I am super thorough and careful, I label my bottles and containers with Braille labels.  Most bottles are so much alike to the touch that one little slip of the hand, so to speak, and I'll get them mixed up.

The boxes may be a bit different and the same for containers but now that I can use my trusty Aira app to help me, things are much better.

So, what is the Aira app all about?  It is easy to use on one's iPhone.  Just sign up for it through the App Store and voila!  You now have access to round-the-clock agents in the States who can help you to identify almost anything.

Just go into the App, call Aira, and then they will do the rest for you.

Being a bit careless! When my chess book got soiled

Call me a bit of a fuss pot but I was not happy when my Braille chess book got soiled.  I had closed it after reading a bit and had put it on my kitchen table.  Then, a few minutes later I picked it up and was taking it back to my bookshelf when I noticed that the label felt quite a bit mucked up.

Upon further inspection I discovered that I had accidentally rested the poor label on some particles of sticky food.  So, I decided to try and clean it with a damp cloth.  This only made it worse and soon a fair chunk of the label felt quite mucked up.

I just wanted to restore the original label but could not do it on my own because it meant that I would need to reproduce the printed text.

Shane came to my rescue and did a fantastic job of restoring the label for me. Ah!  Just one thing that I could not do independently for myself.

One step at a time: Negotiating my mailbox

After the post office changed how it delivers parcels to us, I had to make a slight adjustment and now this is how it works.

If we receive a huge parcel that is unable to fit into our regular mailbox, it is placed into a larger community mailbox which is located at the back of the regular boxes. The mail person leaves a key in our regular mailbox and it has a tag that has both Braille and large print written on it.

The Braille is easy to read and so, too, is the large print because it is raised. So, all I need to do is to be able to find where the larger boxes are. Thanks to the post office and their initiative, this too is easy as the labels on the larger boxes are extremely easy to read. Very pleasing for me.

Going back in time: Card games

It's funny how sometimes you seem to forget about some of those childhood games that you used to love and cherish while growing up. Or you simply do not have any time now for them.

This is how it is for me; unfortunate but true. When I was growing up, I used to play card games with my brother and cousins.

We used cards marked with Braille so that I could participate fully. I loved playing with my dad as well and he taught me so many games and tricks. So good was his coaching that I was even able to hold my own with my brother and cousins.

Then I grew up and it all went away, or I should say it disappeared on me. I still remember those happy days, however, and I have promised myself to return to my beloved card games some day soon!

A tedious task: Getting rid of old software

I need to make sure that when I get rid of old software, it is indeed old software and not something that I should be holding on to.

So, in order to avoid throwing out the wrong thing and keeping the right thing, here is what I do.

I label each piece of software by placing braille labels on their packages or boxes. Then I arrange them in a logical order, either on my book shelves or in my drawers in some sort of order that I can understand. If I am

ambitious enough and if there is no printed label on said boxes or packages, I get sighted assistance to place printed labels on packages and boxes.

The important thing for me to remember is that I am the one who needs to be able to find what I am searching for.

A must do: Got to Braille those envelopes

For me, it is probably the best way to keep track of my mail and the contents of my files.  If I do not Braille my envelopes then I am afraid that I will be totally lost and helpless and this will only lead to me being confused, thrown completely off track, and then I will need to depend on sighted assistance to help sort out my stuff.

Thank goodness that I started doing this many years ago, and when I lost my vision almost completely in 2004 I will say that Brailling my envelopes saved my sanity.

Sometimes I may forget but then I quickly get back on track. Good thing that I have wonderful friends that I trust to help me stay on track. It is a relief when I can go to my file folders and find what I am searching for without any help from the sighted world.

A most humiliating experiences for me: No access when I voted in the Ontario Elections on June 7, 2018

Believe it or not, this was a total shock for me.  I could only say that it was one of the most horrible experiences for me when it comes to voting in Canada.

Prior to this experience on June 7, 2018, all of my experiences re voting in the Ontario Elections were excellent so just imagine my horror when I went to vote this time.  Here is the short story.

Staff at the polls were absolutely not trained to interact and communicate with a vision-impaired person.  They refused to communicate directly with me, choosing instead to insist that I sit in a chair and then communicating with my friend on my behalf.

They did not understand when my friend and I insisted that I be given my right to vote privately in the booth, insisting that either she or they could accompany me into the voting booth to cast my ballot.

They had no idea where to find the Braille templates or Braille documents.  They did not even know how to assemble the template and then slip the ballot into the template.  Most of all, the Braille was unreadable.

It is my right, just as it is the right of everyone else, to be allowed to vote in privacy. When staff such as these folks display such unawareness and lack of understanding I can only shake my head in disbelief and then do the right thing!  Take Elections Ontario to the Human Rights Tribunal!

This was totally unacceptable!

All in a day's work: Devices and devices

There are devices and then there are devices.  Those that are extremely accessible and usable and those that are not so accessible and usable.  Then there are those that are not at all accessible or usable for me as a vision-impaired person.

There are devices that come with well-written manuals in an electronic or Braille format and then there are those that only come with a print manual. Same for all instructions.

So, which is my favorite?  It is the device that includes easy to follow, friendly tutorials, electronic documentation, and if there is Braille then this is a nice to have bonus.

Cherished times: The playing cards

I still have memories of those childhood playing cards when I used to play with my brother, cousins, and Dad.  For me there was Braille on them so that I could play and then there were the special ones that my beloved Tanta Julie bought for me when she went on her trip to the United States.

The backs of those cards were red and I guarded and protected them so vigorously.  The only time that I played with them was when I was involved in games with the others.  Otherwise they stayed safely tucked away in my toys' cupboard.

Fast forward to so many years later and I seem to have lost track of them. They probably disappeared from my grasp without my even knowing it.  It sure bothers me that I cannot even remember what happened to them.

I have since had several other sets of playing cards. Some were bought at stores that sell stuff for the blind and vision-impaired while there was one particular set where my cousin, Brenda, helped me to put Braille on them thus making them available for me to play with.

Just another new experience: An unexpected challenge at a hotel

As a regular traveler I often have the pleasure of staying at hotels that range from excellent to very good to good but with some glitches.

This is what happened to me a few months ago in 2017.  After entering my room I discovered that there was a problem.  No, not with the room but with the elevators.

You see, the very nice service desk attendant had just escorted me to my room but when we took the elevator up he told me that not all of the elevators had access to the same floors.  Some only went as high as #6 for instance, others went as far as #12, and the rest went to the penthouse suites.

In addition, there was no way for me, as a vision-impaired person, to know which elevator went to which floors. What to do?

Well, the quickest solution was for me to ask for assistance each time I needed to get to and from my room but that was not an ideal solution.  In addition, there were no Braille labels on the buttons, just raised large print.

I found it to be a very strange way, indeed, and I can only hope that this hotel finds a way to fix this.

An experience to remember: At the chess club with Nadia's young students

In February of 2017, I visited my chess coach's class to talk to her young students and the topic was to be: I play chess as a blind person.

Nadia had been asking me to do this for a while and I finally got around to it.  I can tell you that I fully enjoyed my time with these smart and intuitive young ones.  Their questions were right on the money and they were very intuitive questions.

They wanted to know how I played chess; how did I go about identifying the pieces from each other.  Whether or not I used a special board, how did I identify pages in my book, and how did I know what the teacher was writing on the blackboard.  Were Braille page numbers different from print page numbers and did I like playing chess?

These questions were but just a few and as they ate their lunch their questions kept coming, fast and furious.  The youngest was about six years old and the oldest was about 12 years old.  Nadia did not have to encourage them to ask anything and everything.

At the end of it all, as I walked out of the school with Sue, I could not help but muse to myself as to whether one of these smart youngsters could one day become Prime Minister of Canada?

A cherished memory: Listening to the radio when I was but a kid

Another great memory for me: the number of hours that I spent listening to the radio when I was but a kid.

From the earliest of years, I used to sit under our radio which was mounted on the wall.  I would pull up a chair and there I would sit for hours just listening to any and everything.  There was the music, the news, and then those countless shows with all of their tips, hints, and contests.

I listened to them all and had so much fun.  In those days Braille books were just a luxury for me and they were  very scarce so the next best thing was the radio and oh how I loved just listening to it.

I can still hear the voices of those wonderful announcers in my mind.  There was Don, June, Valerie, Barbara, Jim, Dick, Ann, Chris, and oh so many others.

I especially loved listening to the recipes and the contests and I even won a few of them!  Then the radio was where I started to get interested in the news; local and international alike, and it was Dad who was my constant coach.

So many wonderful memories for me to remember and keep close to my heart, and oh yes!  Those ongoing soap operas with Mom, Granny and me listening in and my brothers dropping in and out to listen.

Making sure my knitting is on track

I have been knitting for almost a year now and my passion and excitement for this wonderful activity has not fluctuated in the least. When you have a wonderful teacher such as Miko, you have all of the ingredients that you should need to keep on going.

I took up knitting to try and improve my patience and I can tell you that it has worked.  At first I thought that a blind person would not be able to knit but this is not true.  I have friends who are blind and who knit.

I have had some challenging days as we move forward.  Problems with not knitting the same stitch twice, dropping stitches, and making sure that I always keep my working yarn in the right place.

I started with the larger needles and the thicker yarn but now I have moved on to the thinner yarn and smaller needles.  It is my hope that before long I'll start to knit bunnies for babies.  This is my first project and now I just have to learn to be consistent.

I have invested in a handbook for knitters in Braille along with a needle master kit.  Hopefully this will encourage me to keep on knitting.

Braille labels found in St. Lucia

Just imagine my surprise when I discovered that some of the products in a pharmacy in St. Lucia had Braille labels on their boxes.  I discovered this great find during my 2015 annual summer trip to this tiny Caribbean island and boy was I delighted.

I have seen Braille labels before on a sporadic basis but I certainly did not expect to find them in this particular neck of the woods.  Now, allow me to clarify for you.  The box in question that I discovered was denoted with the name of the product in Braille, just one line of Braille.

This was enough for me to light up with glee. Then a closer examination of other boxes on the shelf enabled me to discover that several others also had Braille notations on their fronts.

This, to me, is a start and I look forward to more progress.

Setting up my nose irrigation device

A few months ago I decided to bite the bullet and purchase a nose irrigation device as I have been suffering from congestion for some time now.

After buying this sophisticated device I knew that in order to set it up I had to seek sighted assistance to do so as the instructions did not come in any sort of electronic or Braille format and this was absolutely no surprise to me. So, on a bright sunny day my friend, Sue, set about to make it work.

Sue was absolutely very patient, taking her time to assemble it and then I had to test it. I trusted Sue implicitly and accordingly everything went really well.

Just think: If Sue had not been there to assist me or if I had not been able to find a sighted person to help me, this device would not have been available to me. This is not the end of my story, however. There is more to come.

I can only encourage manufacturers to keep us in mind when they send out their products with manuals that are unreadable to the print disabled, as they often refer to us.
