One more time! Rearranging my freezer and fridge

Every so often it happens and it is Mom who does the rearranging and repacking.  At the end of the day my fridge and freezer are much neater and all I need to do now is to learn where she has put things.

I have become more used to Mom’s regular events; she just loves to rearrange and repack.  She does it patiently and with gusto while I just look on.

Nothing for me to do but to wait until she is done and then I take time to relearn.

Boy, did I learn so much! Course is over

And what a relief!  From April 02 – May 19, 2023, I and 5 other students participated in the Carroll Centre’s SRUTT course and what a wonderful experience it was!

I learned so much, worked alongside some great folks and at the end of it all?  I certainly enhanced my technical knowledge.

Above all, I had the pleasure to have had Nick Corbett as my head instructor.  This unbelievable young man reminded me of the Energizer Bunny!  He kept going and never seemed to tire out!  He guided, advised, and taught with an unusually strong hand and committed spirit.

Now it’s time to put my training to work and I cannot wait!

A mild surprise! Discovering an extra pair of shoes

I guess that I was not careful enough, eh?  Ah yes, and there it was!  An extra pair or another pair of shoes sitting in my tote on the floor of my closet.

This means that I had to take all of my shoes out and then to re-identify and rearrange them.  All in a day’s work.

A messy experience! When egg yolk fell on my clothes

And oh my gosh!  I only realized that it had fallen on my shirt when I felt something warm on my chest. As soon as I had investigated I discovered that the egg yolk from my fried egg had fallen on my shirt.

These are the times when I describe it as a silent fall.  No noise, no indicator, just the warmth of  something on my chest.  Just glad that Mom was there to confirm and to help me clean it up.

Technology once more! Turning up the volume on my phone

Looking back at this now I can only smile to myself as I recall.  You see, I had to spend a few trying moments to find the volume button on my land line phone.  All that I wanted to do was to turn up the volume.

There I was, going through all of the buttons on my poor old phone before finding the right one.  And if I had taken the time to be logical about it, things would definitely have gone more smoothly for me.  However, on this particular day my patience seemed to have deserted me.

After a few minutes I did find it and at the end of it all it was not as complicated as I thought it would be.

Plant shopping with Mom: Seeking saucers for my plant pots

For the most part it is Mom who helps me to seek saucers for my plant pots.  She is bound and determined to ensure that water does not spill onto my carpets and as a result she is very meticulous in how she goes about choosing them.

Not only does she take great care to choose the saucers but she also buys sheets of thick plastic to place under the saucers.  This way, the water will not spill onto the carpet and I can tell you that, as a vision-impaired person, it is paramount that this does not happen because it would be very difficult for me to know unless I stepped into the water.

Of course, I could always be extra careful myself each time I water my plants.

A total pleasure! Working with Shaun

Working with Shaun has sure turned into such a wonderful experience for me.  Shaun is so very patient, kind, generous, and probably one of the most selfless persons that I have met.

As a pottery instructor, I consider him to be one of the best.  He has sure helped me to spark and stimulate my creative juices and my imagination.  Together we have several unique pieces, ranging from Christmas plates to pinch pots and matching spoons.  From plates and bowls to so much more.

There is nothing more refreshing and exhilarating than to have the opportunity to work with someone like Shaun.  He is always open to any and every suggestion that I make and he often enhances my ideas and redirects my thoughts.  That’s my Shaun!

Times when I smile: Could not find Mom

It sure makes for interesting times whenever I need to find Mom.   I sometimes do not know where she is and calling to her does not do the trick because she is hard of hearing and does not hear me.

So what do I do?  I need to go from room to room listening and calling and often using my sense of smell to try and detect her presence.  Sometimes she would see me and call to me but if she does not then my treasure hunt continues.

On this particular day she did not see me so I had to use my own techniques to find her.  Eventually I did and she was sitting quietly in her recliner, working on her crossword puzzles.

She was my eyes: Following the Coronation

Following the Coronation on May 06 was a lot easier for me as opposed to the funeral for Her Majesty.  Why?  Because Mom was there to be my eyes.

We woke early and sat together to watch the entire session.  Mom was her usual self: describing, commenting, and listening as best as she could.

I totally enjoyed having Mom as my commentator.  I was able to better enjoy it all.  Another memory to cherish forever.

Falling silently: When the tooth picks fell

Of course they did not make a sound when they fell onto my bathroom floor.  The only indicator that I had was when I felt them slip out of my hand.  Then I had to guess where they had fallen.

Down on my hands and knees I went.  I crawled around and luckily I located the tooth picks in short order.  There were several of them.

I counted them and then returned them to their little package.  Not one of my favourite things to do.  Those things that fall noiselessly to the floor are always a challenge to me as a vision-impaired person.

Priceless and wonderful memories: At Metro with Mom

When Mom visited me in the late winter and early spring of 2023, she really enjoyed going to the Metro supermarket and just spending time browsing and buying.  We would walk leisurely up and down the aisles and she would just enjoy looking at all of the merchandise on the packed shelves.

Mom especially enjoyed roaming around in the meat section, the produce section, and then the deli section.  She described everything that she saw to me and together we would choose.  But I always allowed her to make the final decision.

These are such priceless memories and will be forever burned in my mind and carefully stored in my memory bank.  I was never sure when she would return to Toronto after the Covid shutdown but we have been given another glorious chance to enjoy our visits to the Metro supermarket.

Memories forever! Losing my favourite bowl

After all!  Good things cannot last forever and this was the case with my favourite bowl.  I'd had this large plastic red bowl since I was a student, which was a very long time ago, and it had served me well in several different ways.

As a mixing bowl, as a salad bowl, and as a bowl in which to soak my small clothes.  I had treasured my large red plastic bowl for so many years.  Then one day it started to split its sides.  I kept using it until I could not any longer.  Then it was time to say so long.

Thanks Mom! Which haircut is the better one?

It never fails!  Every now and then I need to ask someone with vision to check out my hair cuts.  This time it was a good thing that Mom was on hand to help me out.  Unfortunately, the haircut in question was not done properly.

The hairdresser had cut my hair too short and had made a mess of my hair.  So Mom had to compare this hair cut to the previous one and she determined that the previous one was the better one.

This is probably one of the more interesting challenges for me.  That is, to determine whether or not my hair cut is a good one.  I can naturally feel the length of my hair and check to make sure that my part is in the right spot and that I still have my hair peaking on both sides.  Thereafter, I need sighted assistance to check off the rest for me.
