Memories forever! Losing my favourite bowl
As a mixing bowl, as a salad bowl, and as a bowl in which to soak my small clothes. I had treasured my large red plastic bowl for so many years. Then one day it started to split its sides. I kept using it until I could not any longer. Then it was time to say so long.

What a clatter! When the cups fell
Looking back on this moment it sure made me smile! I was visiting Mom and was just reaching for something in one of her kitchen cupboards when it happened.
Yes! The cups decided to leave their positions in the cupboard and to come tumbling down. They fell on the floor and made a loud clattering sound!
Good thing that Mom’s bedroom was far enough away so that she did not hear the commotion! I was not sure how many cups had fallen so I proceeded to find and to pick them up off of the floor. I counted them as I found them and thank goodness that they were plastic so there were no broken pieces to contend with.
I searched meticulously and as luck would have it, I found them all! Just another moment in time!

One step at a time: Being careful with the dishes
I think that this would pertain to almost anyone when working in the kitchen. That is, when accessing shelves in order to remove dishes. Especially so when the dishes are at a higher level.
I can share that I have never broken a dish as long as I have been working in the kitchen and hopefully it will remain this way. I do not overreach when it comes to accessing dishes from shelves at a higher level. I take my step stool, climb carefully onto it, and then proceed to find my required dish.
Next, I place the dish on a sturdy surface close by. Then I step off of my stool and the rest is okay.

Happy times: My pottery pieces
Much as I continue to enjoy producing my pottery pieces I am almost always so sad that I am unable to see what they look like. Touching and feeling them can never make up for the visual part of it all that I am missing, so I can only imagine and visualize in my mind.
I have made so many pieces ever since I started with Joan almost three years ago. I have made Christmas ornaments, soap dishes, fruit dishes, sushi dishes, mango shaped dishes, maple leaf plates, fruit bowls, tulips, a vase, bowls for my friend's cat, a jewellery bowl, and my pride and joy! A bird house!
My teacher, Joan, has done so much for me! She describes everything to me and I was so very proud last Christmas when I managed to make large fruit bowls for my mom and for my friend, Sue.
Joan is planning to retire in the spring of 2018 so I am planning to stay with her until she retires. Not sure what my next piece is going to be but I can't wait to get started in the fall of 2017.

Testing the cup of tea
I do not think that my way of testing a cup of tea to ensure that it is either warm enough or not too hot is any different from that of a sighted person.
Here is what I do. I simply stick my finger into my cup, making sure that when I do so I aim for the top of my cup. I go very gently and gingerly and the tip of my finger is my thermometer.
Sometimes I burn my finger tip but with practice I have learned how to stick it in the right way so that I feel the least pain.
I also have another technique which is not as effective as the one above. I wrap my hands around my tea cup and this tells me, or rather gives me a fair indication of, how hot the contents of my cup are.

Why I shake things
No, I am not crazy, and yes, there is some logic to this strategy of mine. I shake things so that I can easily tell if a cup or glass is empty or not, and in addition, I can also get a handle on how much liquid or anything else is in said cup or glass.
I shake cups and glasses.I shake bottles, jars, boxes and bags, and I shake tins and cans. That is, I shake them all after I make sure that they are securely closed.
By shaking things, I can not only tell how full or empty they are, I can also tell what is inside of them. I listen carefully to the sound that emanates from said thing in order to determine what it is I am shaking. The sound of liquid is different from the sound of powder and the sound of grains is different from the sound of jelly.
By shaking a tin I can determine if it is soup or beans. By shaking a box I can determine if it is packages of tea or something else. Fun, and lots of fun for me!

Being careful with full cups and glasses
This should not come as a surprise to anyone reading this blog and it should hold true for anyone, blind or sighted. For me personally, I am always extra careful when I am interacting with full cups and glasses.
I make sure that I know where the full cup or glass is at all times: on a counter, on a table, on a dresser, anywhere. Then, after I have located the said cup or glass, I take a firm grip on it and make sure that I have it covered all the way. That is, that I can easily lift it, put it back down from where I retrieved it, and most of all, carry it to wherever I wish to take it.
It does not matter whether or not the contents of said cup or glass are hot or cold, my strategy is the same. But I am probably a bit more careful if the contents are hot.
So far, so good. I have never really gotten myself into any trouble locating and transporting full cups or glasses. I am very careful when I attempt to locate and I make sure that my path to my destination with said cup or glass is a clear one so that I don't spill anything.

Is It Clean Mom?
This is one of my favorite questions and I constantly need to keep doing this because I am unable to decipher or tell when certain things are not clean. When it comes to dishes, glasses, and pots and pans, I can usually tell if things are clean by running my fingers along surfaces. If I feel bumps and sticky stuff, then I know that it is not clean but when it comes to stains it's a different story.
In the kitchen, stains are my main challenge because it is difficult to tell if a stain is there unless it is sticky or bumpy. When it comes to clothes, the same thing applies. When it comes to carpets and floors and furniture, it's all the same. So, if mom is around I can as her but if she is not then I have to be super careful. Walls and doors are also something for me to be careful with. My fingers can usually tell if surfaces are dirty but in many cases it is impossible to feel spots and stains.
I'd like to see the development of some sort of device to tell blind persons when stains and spots are present. In the meantime, you can learn more about how blind persons deal with such things as spots and stains by visiting www.rnib.org.
I'm Donna J. Jodhan your friendly accessibility advocate wishing you a terrific day and urging you to go out there and help educate the sighted world about how blind persons deal with spots and stains.
