A challenge forever: Those invisible stains

Personally, I find those invisible stains one of the biggest challenges to deal with on a daily basis.  They can be any and everywhere.  From the counter top in the kitchen, to the floor, carpet, stove, and finally, on my clothes.

They are silent.  They do not alert me of their presence, they can be tiny to large.  In short, they only make me aware of their existence when a sighted person tells me of them.

They are so very difficult to locate, especially for me with precious little vision.  They have no smell; I cannot feel them and I cannot even touch them.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly sight-loss coach and accessibility advisor, wishing you a terrific day.

Staying alert: Being aware of potential tea stains

As someone who enjoys cups of tea on a daily basis, I make very sure that my counter is void of those testy tea stains. As I can no longer see if I leave them on my kitchen counter, I am triple careful whenever I make myself a cup of tea. I have a little tea bag holder that I drop my tea bag into and I do this over my kitchen sink. Then, after making my cup of tea, I wipe down my counter just to make sure that if any stains were there that they are now gone.

Of course, there is no guarantee that I will catch these stubborn stains but I can only try. This is probably one of the most difficult challenges for me as a vision-impaired person: to determine whether or not there are tea stains on my counter because one cannot feel a tea stain.

Taking care of business: My poor old chairs

As a vision-impaired person it is often almost impossible to know when spots and stains have invaded my furniture and clothes, and then there are the counters and dressers.  This was the sad case when Mom informed me that three of my chairs were stained with water spots.

I know how they got there but I never knew that they were, indeed, there.  So, action had to be taken.

Mom tried to remove the stains but no go.  So we made the decision to have all 3 chairs reupholstered. It did not take too long for this to be done and now we have 3 great chairs with no stains or spots on them.

Is It Clean Mom?

This is one of my favorite questions and I constantly need to keep doing this because I am unable to decipher or tell when certain things are not clean.  When it comes to dishes, glasses, and pots and pans, I can usually tell if things are clean by running my fingers along surfaces.  If I feel bumps and sticky stuff, then I know that it is not clean but when it comes to stains it's a different story.

In the kitchen, stains are my main challenge because it is difficult to tell if a stain is there unless it is sticky or bumpy.  When it comes to clothes, the same thing applies.  When it comes to carpets and floors and furniture, it's all the same.  So, if mom is around I can as her but if she is not then I have to be super careful.  Walls and doors are also something for me to be careful with.  My fingers can usually tell if surfaces are dirty but in many cases it is impossible to feel spots and stains.

I'd like to see the development of some sort of device to tell blind persons when stains and spots are present.  In the meantime, you can learn more about how blind persons deal with such things as spots and stains by visiting www.rnib.org.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan your friendly accessibility advocate wishing you a terrific day and urging you to go out there and help educate the sighted world about how blind persons deal with spots and stains.
