She guides me with total confidence: Navigating Mom's fridge
Mom sends me to her fridge to bring her something.
She tells me which shelf and which part of the shelf I will find it on.
The impressive part of this all is that Mom knows exactly where to find any and everything.
She sits in her chair and directs me with pinpoint precision. That’s my miracle Mom!

One more time! Rearranging my freezer and fridge
I have become more used to Mom’s regular events; she just loves to rearrange and repack. She does it patiently and with gusto while I just look on.
Nothing for me to do but to wait until she is done and then I take time to relearn.

Nothing new! When Mom rearranged my freezer
I know, I know! When Mom rearranged my freezer she did it to help me out but, truth be told, this is what happened.
I had to learn where some things were placed but the good thing is that Mom knows how I like things and above all her packing skills are much better than mine. So, at the end of the day it all worked out well.
It was just the shock of learning that she had lovingly done it and did not tell me. That’s okay, though, because over the years Mom has rearranged other things for me and I live to tell it all!

I thought I was going to die: In the earthquake
Oh, boy! What an experience and one never to forget. On August 21, 2018, I
honestly felt that these were my last moments.
Here I was, standing not too far away from Mom at around dinnertime when the
earthquake struck. It lasted for around 90 seconds and was a 6.9 on the Richter scale.
No, I could not see anything around me but I knew darn well that everything was shaking. From our fridge to glasses and dishes and other things around us. Mom later told me that our fridge started to dance and that for a split second she thought of going to stand by it to try and stop it from shaking.
As someone who is vision impaired, it is indeed a very strange experience to feel everything shaking and not knowing anything else. For one moment I thought that we would end up in the sea but thank God that did not happen.

All in a day's work: Reacquainting myself with my fridge
Each time I travel and stay away for any length of time, I need to reacquaint myself with my fridge. Thank goodness that my fridge is just big enough so that I do not have to worry too much about large shelves and drawers.
I start with the top shelf and methodically descend downwards doing my best to remember. Then I tackle the drawers and finally I go to my freezer.
This entire activity takes about half an hour at the most, but at the end of it all I am a bit tired and need to sit and catch my breath. I liken this to a refresher course in familiarity. For whereas a person with sight would normally take much less time to do this, it is not quite the same for me as someone who is vision-impaired.
I need to depend more on my memory whereas for a person with sight the memory factor is not as prominent.

A crazy experience: Seeking the mustard bottle
This was yet another amusing experience for me: when I went searching for my bottle of mustard.
Here I was, opening up my fridge and directing my search towards the door. I knew exactly where the bottle of mustard should be but there was one piece of the puzzle missing. I could not remember what the bottle felt like so I had to call on my sense of smell to help me out.
I had a fair idea as to the size of the bottle, but alas! There were several other bottles with similar sizes so there was no getting away from having to sniff the contents of each bottle that fit the size as I perceived it.
It took me a wee bit of time to find my target but at the end of it all it worked out just fine.

A challenge: Searching through Mom's fridge
As a blind person I find it very interesting and at times a bit of a challenge, and why? Because I never know what I am going to find, but there is one thing for me to say: it is well organized as everything seems to have its particular place.
For the most part, Mom’s fridge is always packed and contains a wide variety of all kinds of everything. Things are organized into some sort of orderly piles and it is not too difficult to find something cold to drink.
My challenge is that I often have to open containers to learn their contents whereas for the one with sight this is not the case. Say what you may, however, it is an adventure that I often enjoy!

Re-acquaintance with my fridge
Each time I go away on an extended trip and after returning to my home, I need to reacquaint myself with my fridge. I need to remember where I put things before I left and how I placed things in my fridge at that time.
Sometimes, I may start all over again and order things differently so as to speed up the process but most of the time I am able to remember and then continue on from there.
Sometimes it is fun but at other times it could be a challenge. I guess that it depends on the mood that I am in at the time. One thing that I would say is this: it is always best for me to do it myself because if others were to do it for me then it would put more stress on me to learn how they have done it.

"Each time we raise our voice at someone else we are engaging in bullying! Each time we raise our hands to slap or punch someone else we are also engaging in bullying and each time we engage in actions to either manipulate or force someone else to do what we want we are also engaging in bullying!
There is no room in this world for bullying and each day we fail to take action against bullying it is another day that we allow others to bully us and our kids. Our heros and role models are the ones who have made us proud, those brave young men and women who gave their lives for us in past wars and those who continue to do so. They are not the ones who choose to be racists and those who believe that their bad behaviour in public is acceptable.
I write and record audio mysteries that are being used at such events as murder mystery evenings as well as at public awareness and team building events. I promote understanding, tolerance, and problem solving and my audio mysteries continue to be broadcasted around the world and you can listen to them anywhere! On the plane or train! In the car or right there in your home! On your i device or computer!
Please join my campaign against bullying (CAB) by supporting my efforts to keep on writing and recording!
If you truly care then you will certainly dare!"

How I Navigate Aound My Freezer
It's really not that difficult; the only difference is that I use tactile methods to do this plus super organization. In addition, whenever anyone goes into my freezer to retrieve anything, they need to know that everything needs to be repacked in the same way that it was found or else I'll be in big trouble the next time I go hunting for something in my freezer.
I pack all my packages of chicken on one side of my freezer. Pork is on the other side. Beef and fish are in the middle. Boxes are labeled in Braille. Packages of vegetables are banished to the door of my freezer and I use tape to distinguish between them. I do not have to worry too much about bacon and sausages. Their shapes are enough to help me out.
I do not think that this is too much different from what a well organized sighted person would do when it comes to organizing their freezer. There are several other techniques that blind persons can use when working with their freezers and you can learn more about these by visiting www.maxiaids.com. This website provides a magnitude of products for blind and partially sighted persons.
