Caught off guard! When the shoes mucked up my carpet
What a unique experience this was and thank goodness that Mom was there to notice it all. Or else for me, as a vision-impaired person, it would have been very difficult to realize.
We were getting ready to go out and Mom suddenly exclaimed that there was black stuff all over the carpet in my dining room. At first I could not fathom what it could be but then I began to feel something under my shoes as I walked on the carpet. I bent down to examine my shoes and sure enough! The soles of my shoes were coming undone in both sides of my shoe. The rest was easy to figure out.
The rubber from the shedding soles spilled onto my carpet. Good thing that Mom’s quick observance picked up on this. Ah, yes! Another challenge for me as a vision-impaired person.

Starting over: Trying on new shoes
I go shoe shopping with Stephanie and she makes it a lot of fun. I tell her what I am looking for and what colour I am interested in. I take her arm and we wander around the shoe store and as we walk she describes the shoes on the shelves, their styles, colours, and then it is time to get down to the real matter at hand.
Stephie finds a clerk and soon he/she is bringing me my right shoe size and colour that I would like to have. I try it on and if I like the feel of it we then walk around the store to see how it feels and fits on my foot.
If all goes well then it is time to choose and then pay. Stephie stands guard as I stand at the counter and watches carefully to ensure that the transaction goes through without a hitch.
Thank God for Stephie! My precious pair of eyes!

Nice and toasty: My new sheepskin slippers
They arrived just in time for Thanksgiving 2020 and what a welcomed addition to my daily attire. They are nice, fluffy, and very warm and although I am unable to see them I can certainly visualize them.
They are purple with silver trim and my friend, Gabriella, helped me to purchase them online. I really love them and even more so because they were made in Quebec!
Ah, yes! My new purple sheepskin slippers!

A new shopping experience: choosing shoes with Stephanie
Thursday, March 7, 2019
One of my least favourite activities: Shopping for shoes
I can tell you that this is probably one of the most tedious shopping tasks for me. I am always happy to return home after a day of shoe shopping.
First off, I need to find shoes that will look good on me and will also suit my feet. Then I need to ensure that I am trying on the right size. Then the colour. Finally, actually trying them on.
There are two very important persons that I need alongside me whenever I go shoe shopping. A sighted person that I trust and a friendly salesman who is patient and accommodating.
The sighted person these days is my mom who knows what I like and what I do not. She knows my preferences and tastes in styles and this cuts down on a lot of time. Mom does not waste any time when it comes to choosing. She goes about her business quickly and efficiently and after choosing a few pairs, she brings them to me.
I try them on and Mom watches carefully as I do so. Then I rise out of my chair and proceed to walk around in them.
I wait for Mom's feedback and comments and then I make my decision as to whether or not to buy. We discuss and she tells me why her feedback is as it is.
This is one instance for me where I need assistance and there are other instances where I need similar assistance.

Memories for a lifetime: Playing in the puddles
It has been and will always be one of my very special things to do whenever I have nothing else to do. If this makes any sort of sense to you then I invite you to read on.
As a child I remember purposely looking for puddles outdoors each time it rained. I would either step in them and swish the water around with my feet or I would simply stand there looking down at the water and just enjoying the images in it.
Vision or no vision, it continues to be such a pleasure for me. I simply think that puddles are one of the extra enjoyments of nature. They are placed there for a reason! For people like me to enjoy and mull over.
I don't seem to get enough of playing in the puddles these days, and why? Because I am just a wee bit too busy these days but this needs to change and change soon!
I miss my puddles! I miss hearing the sound of my swishing feet, whether with or without shoes! I can no longer see the images in the water but I have my memory to help me out here.

A funny experience: What color were my shoes?
Every now and then my very meticulous system of organizing has a bit of a glitch. That is, the organizing of my clothes closets. I am used to it but the important thing is for me to catch it before I leave my home.
That was the case a few months ago when I went to fetch a pair of shoes from my shoe rack and I just could not remember what color my shoes were. Good thing that Mom was there to rescue me from a minor disaster.
I am never afraid to ask her for help and she is always so very ready to be of assistance. So what I thought were black shoes were actually tan shoes.
It is a good thing that we both have a great sense of humor. It sure helps at moments like these.

A cherished memory: Mom and her slippers
Poor old Mom! I am constantly teasing her about her various types of slippers. She wears one pair that makes a very loud and slapping noise as she walks and this is the one that I like best as I can normally tell where she is and when she is approaching.
Then she has one that makes a much softer sound as she walks. It sounds very professional and sometimes I cannot tell quite where she is. However, I can tell when she is hurrying along as opposed to her walking more leisurely.
Then finally there is the pair of slippers that simply do not make any sound at all and this is my least favorite. I cannot really tell which of these is Mom's favorite but maybe, and just maybe, she likes them all.

A funny experience: Picking up the wrong shoe
I have to tell you that this was probably one of the funniest experiences for me. It happened a few months ago and thank God that Mom was there to save the day for me! Or else I am not sure what would have ended up happening.
There were about four pairs of shoes lined up close to my front door and two of these pairs belonged to me. One pair was black and the other was brown.
Now then, as I can no longer see enough to decipher colors I always try to ensure that I know which color I am wearing, but on this day I had a lapse and placed both pairs right next to each other. Then, when I went to put them away, I quickly learned before catastrophe could strike, I had inadvertently picked up the left side that was black and the right side which was brown.
I was just about to put them away and then return for the other pair when Mom happened to be walking by and she halted me in my tracks. She told me what I had done and after that we both had a great laugh.
Ah, yes! All in the day of someone who is vision impaired.

Finding the right pair of slippers
Yes, this is always a very interesting time for me, to find the right pair of slippers that belong to me. However, I am here to tell you that at the end of it all I do end up with the right pair of slippers.
So, how do I determine and decipher that it is indeed my pair of slippers? This entails using my sense of touch to determine. I have to be aware of how my own pair of slippers feels: length, width, style, etc. Then I have to ensure that I find both sides to the pair. Difficult you say? Not as difficult as you may think.
Now, if someone else has the same type of slippers as I, then I have to use other mechanisms. I have to make sure the lengths and thickness match and that if there is someone else with the same type of slippers, that I know whether or not theirs are either smaller or larger than mine. This often happens with Mom and me, when we both have the same types of slippers.

"Each time we raise our voice at someone else we are engaging in bullying! Each time we raise our hands to slap or punch someone else we are also engaging in bullying and each time we engage in actions to either manipulate or force someone else to do what we want we are also engaging in bullying!
There is no room in this world for bullying and each day we fail to take action against bullying it is another day that we allow others to bully us and our kids. Our heroes and role models are the ones who have made us proud; those brave young men and women who gave their lives for us in past wars and those who continue to do so. They are not the ones who choose to be racists and those who believe that their bad behaviour in public is acceptable.
I write and record audio mysteries that are being used at such events as murder mystery evenings as well as at public awareness and team building events. I promote understanding, tolerance, and problem solving and my audio mysteries continue to be broadcasted around the world and you can listen to them anywhere! On the plane or train! In the car or right there in your home! On your i device or computer!
Please join my campaign against bullying (CAB) by supporting my efforts to keep on writing and recording!
If you truly care then you will certainly dare!"
