That's just me! Sorting out my winter sweaters

 Call me fussy but I just think that as someone with a vision impairment, it is imperative for me to know the colours of my sweaters and especially so when I am unable to see the them. And this is why I sort them before winter is upon us.

I need to know what colour sweater I am wearing so that I can fully imagine how I look.  I need to put the colours in alphabetical order in my drawer so that I am organized and feel in control.

When someone tells me that they like my sweater and that the colour suits me, I need to know which sweater they are referring to and what colour suits me.

Yes, I may be fussy but that’s me.  My winter sweaters and me and this applies to all of my sweaters as a whole.

A bit fussy: Choosing the ideal hair brush

Call me fussy and a bit funny but every time I prepare to travel I need to ensure that my hair brush is just what I want it to be.  So here goes.

It must be the right size, big enough to fit in my hand.  The handle needs to be long enough for me to be able to maneuver it.  The bristles need to be rounded.  It must also be of a bright colour.

That’s my ideal hair brush, for what it is worth!  And I am sure that there are others who also have their ideal hair brush!

One of my favourite times: Getting ready for planting season

 

It was no different for planting season 2022 and I welcomed it with opened arms and a huge smile!  Of course, my trusted Super, Nick, was right beside me to help out.

Now that I can no longer see to choose my colours, I ask Nick to select them for me and he chooses whichever colours I tell him.  Next he asks me for my choices of plants and I tell him.  Then off he goes and soon he is back with a shopping cart filled with plants, soil, and watering cans.

Nick is very fast and precise and within half an hour he is done planting my plants on my balcony.  After this he cleans my balcony and all of my windows and all is done in about two hours.

I simply love planting season and it does not matter that I cannot enjoy my plants visually; it is just enough to go out there every day and touch them and smell their fragrances.

Exciting times: Sorting out my tops for my Portugal trip

 

This is probably one of the most tedious tasks for me as a person with a vision impairment.  In this case I need to identify the tops that I wish to take on my trip, to know each of their colours, and to determine which pair of pants I am going to match them with.

This was so when I prepared for my trip to Portugal.  First, I asked Stephanie to help me identify the colours and next I separated them and then decided which pair of pants I would wear each of them with.  For me, everything needs to be super organized and very precise.  I sort, place carefully in my suitcase, and then make sure that I know where to find them when the time comes.  All of this after I have carefully determined which of my tops I am going to take.

You would think that with time it becomes easier for me but as this was the first big trip since Covid, it was indeed a matter of revisiting this chore.

Tasty and refreshing: Those yummy fresh fruits

 Yes!  I can still picture them in my mind as I munch on them every morning while visiting Mom.  The large sweet grapes are a dark red.  The zesty melon is red.  The sweet cool pineapple is yellow, and on we go.

I may not have my colours right but this is what I imagine them to be.  It does not take away the fact that each fruit means the world to me.  I take my time to bite into each with love and care.  I savour each and I eat slowly.

Ah yes!  Those fresh yummy fruits!

Most important for me: What colour is my outfit

 

Now that I no longer have enough vision to help me decipher the colour of my clothes, I need to make doubly sure that I know what colours I am wearing.  So, here is my method.

I first use my colour detector to help me determine the colours and if I am not sure then I ask my wonderful neighbour, Sandra.  

For the most part, I have been able to stay out of trouble because of having organized my closet with Mom’s assistance, and if I buy anything new then I take great care  to ensure that I place identification tags on them and place them appropriately in my closet.  

I am happy with this method but I cannot be too careful.

A humorous matter! What colour is my hair?

 

This, indeed, is a very funny situation for me as not being able to know the colour of my hair means that I need to ask one of my sighted friends to give me an answer.

My friends often laugh whenever I ask them this question.  They understand my predicament and sometimes they may try to put one over me but I soon discover what they are up to when I hear laughter in their responses.  

Just bear in mind that everyone has a different view of things, so someone may tell me that I have lots of grey hair while another may tell me that I have lots of black hair.

All in a day's smiles and laughter.

Out of the mouth of babes! Tyler's unique comment

Looking back now I can only smile to myself and say that it all has to do with "out of the mouth of babes"!  For this is exactly what it came down to.

You see, I recently went shopping with my friend Stephanie to find some new bath mats.  I told her that I wanted to ensure that the new bath mats matched the covers on the lids of the toilet seats.

As always, she was very sure to make this happen for me and I trusted that it would be so because I could not see enough to make sure myself.

Then she went home and told her son Tyler about our shopping trip and he had a very quick response to everything.  He told his mom that if I was so worried that my mats and covers should match all I had to do was  invite only my vision-impaired friends to my home so they would not be able to see if things matched.

Matter fixed!  Tyler had solved the problem!

What a shock! Packing the wrong pair of pants

Looking back on this particular experience I can only smile to myself. What makes it even more humorous now is that I only discovered it much later.

In the case of this particular pair of pants, I honestly thought that it was my black dress pair of pants and I had packed it to go along with a red dress blouse. I was supposed to have been traveling to Ottawa for a special function.

I ended up not going because of a snowstorm and did not unpack my stuff until about a week later.  Just imagine my surprise when I then discovered my error.

It turns out that the pair of pants that I had packed was purple! I guess that would have been quite an entrance for me if I had, indeed, ended up going to the function!

A special childhood memory: Candleflies around me

I could never really tell that they were, indeed, around me so I had to take the word of my brothers and cousins. They usually came out at night and they lived at the seaside.  

We would venture outdoors and walk in the fresh cool air of the night and then they would come. They would emit lights of various colours. That is, they would seem to light up as they flew but if you caught them and put them in a container they would not light up. So everyone had to be content to simply admire them as they flew around.  

For me, it meant using my imagination to help me admire them. I had to depend on the descriptions given to me by my parents, brothers, and cousins.  My granny would often go into great detail to describe their presence to me because she knew how much I loved them. I would always be smiling whenever anyone, especially Granny, would describe them to me.

Candleflies were not your ordinary fruit flies! No, they were like little treasures in the night! Graceful, elegant, and beautiful! They were not afraid to mingle among us and they were always so ready to show off their presence!

A favourite childhood memory: Pretending in the mirror

The mirror was the one in Mom's wardrobe and I can still remember those happy, innocent childhood days when she would let me stand in front of her mirror.  So many times when she would open her wardrobe and let me do my thing.

I could not see my own reflection so I would improvise and imagine.  I conjured up colours dancing in front of my eyes.  There were vivid colours: sunny yellow, bright orange, sky blue, grass green, pretty pink, and rose red.  Then I would have various combinations of them.

Next I would graduate to objects and then put colours to them and if Mom gave me enough time I would start to create stories. 

These were such wonderful and treasured times for me and ones that shall forever remain in my memory bank.

The color of Christmas

As Andy Williams used to sing out each year, "It's the most wonderful time of the year," and this is certainly the case for me.  It is that time of year when the child in me decides to show itself.  I am never too embarrassed to express my joy whenever I hear Santa's rich laughter and whenever I smell the sweet fragrance of pine.  All of those colorful presents, bows, lights, and other goodies dancing before my eyes!

Now that my vision is down to a bare minimum, I use my imagination to help me out.  I imagine all those mysterious colored packages under a huge tree decorated with blinking lights.  I can almost see those colorful lights dancing in my memory and I can practically reach out and grab one of those mysterious packages from under the tree.

Lights intermingled with artificial snowflakes, all kinds of Christmas figures and at the top of the tree?  The shining star!

I must not forget my angel and my manger with the Baby Jesus lying in Mother Mary's arms.  The animals, shepherds, Joseph, and the three wise men.  All fixed in my mind's eye forever.

The toys all come alive in my mind!  Doll houses filled with little people. Furniture, tea sets, and strollers with baby dolls.  Even the racing cars, train sets, and those ice skates dancing just out of my reach.  The skis waiting for me to put them on and the colorful balls and game sets.

Ah yes!  The color of Christmas and I will forever be a child at this time of the year!

Having some fun: The matching jacket and cane tip

Just imagine my big smile when Gabriella told me that my jacket and cane tip matched each other on the day when we were going out to run errands.

Truth be told, even when I had enough vision to match my outfits to my accessories, I never ever paid attention to it.  So, when Gabriella noticed this it was a huge first for me.

It is always nice when things do match but my poor old cane tip is never really in the picture when it comes to matching things.  Having had vision previously it is always nice to have things matched and even now that I do not have any vision, it still matters.

Fun times! Sorting out my ornaments

This is probably one of my favourite things to do and I can spend a lot of time doing this.  I simply love to make sure that I know what each one is and then to put it in its appropriate place either in my cabinet or on my book shelf.

Now that I have decided to pursue pottery making, I find myself making all kinds of ornaments; from bird houses and gingerbread houses to boats and Christmas trees. 

I am still able to decide what colours I want them to be, but alas!  I can only imagine the colours now because I can no longer see them. 

This definitely does not prevent me from having fun.  I simply love to hold them in my hands and run my fingers up and down and along their widths and lengths.

Happy childhood memories: How the tiny toys helped me

So, what am I referring to today?  Well, they are the toys that belonged to my twin brother, Jeffrey, and I have such great memories of playing with them. Jeffrey allowed me to play with his tiny cars, trucks, buses and vans, and planes, boats, and soldiers.

In those days I had enough vision to see the colors of all of his toys and I remember not having too much difficulty identifying the various vehicles.  I used to drive them around on Mom's carpet and then I would pretend all kinds of things.  I would even take the toy soldiers and line them up ready for battle.

Some of my favorite tiny toys included the news van, the flat bed truck, the model Mercedes, and oh yes!  The red ship and the yellow boat.  I also loved the jeeps with the spare tire at the back.

I firmly believed that having been able to feel the shapes of these tiny toys fully enabled me to identify them by sight when I received my functional vision years later.

I'm just so very proud: The gingerbread house

This is probably one of the most difficult pottery projects that I have done and I am just so proud of it.  I completed it just after Christmas 2017 and now my friend, Sue, is decorating it for me with all of the handmade candy ornaments that I also made at pottery.

The Life Savers are in colors of red, yellow, and green and I made Kisses and candy canes to decorate the house, as well.  There is a chimney, a really great roof, and even a door and windows.  I can't wait for Sue to complete the finishing touches.

This is what I like about pottery: the ability to create and complete.

Exercising my imagination: Synchronizing the colors

This is something that I continue to do and I believe that it all has to do with the fact that having had functional vision until 2004, I was able to see colors. Now, each time I encounter an object, especially if it is new, I go through the process of synchronizing the color to the object.

Colors shall forever remain in my mind.  Roses will forever be red, skies forever blue, floating clouds always white, and sunrises and sunsets forever yellow and pink, respectively.

I have found this to be a terrific reference point for me because each time I encounter new objects I am able to quickly put color to object.  Most times I ask what color something is and after being told I do the synchronization. But if I do not know, then I put my own color to the new object and this sure helps me to cope.

I try to have fun doing it and most times it puts a smile on my face. Truth be told, though, it also often makes me sad because it makes me realize how much I miss being able to see color.

A funny experience: What color were my shoes?

Every now and then my very meticulous system of organizing has a bit of a glitch.  That is, the organizing of my clothes closets.  I am used to it but the important thing is for me to catch it before I leave my home.

That was the case a few months ago when I went to fetch a pair of shoes from my shoe rack and I just could not remember what color my shoes were.  Good thing that Mom was there to rescue me from a minor disaster.

I am never afraid to ask her for help and she is always so very ready to be of assistance. So what I thought were black shoes were actually tan shoes.

It is a good thing that we both have a great sense of humor.  It sure helps at moments like these.

Not my favorite things: Remembering the balloons

Truth be told, balloons were never my favorite things to be around. But I have to admit that I used to love to toss them into the air and then watch as they came floating back to the floor.  I used to like to see the different colors, but what did I not like about them?

I was always afraid that they would explode or burst in my face if I either touched them or ran into them. I would try to admire them from afar and that was it.

Even today, I am still very much skeptical about balloons.  At best, I put up with them.

A lifetime of precious memories: Christmas is for me

I have had the good fortune to enjoy many wonderful Christmases, with and without vision, and it does not matter!  Christmas is for me.  The smells and the sounds, the laughter and the merry making.

When I had enough sight, I used to enjoy going out to window shop.  To see the bright colorful lights, the flickering candles in the church, Santa's bright red suit, and streets crowded with throngs of folks of all ages.  I also loved to smell the scent of rich pine, cakes and goodies baking in ovens, and taste the various Christmas foods and drinks.  I loved to walk in the snow and watch those big white snowflakes race each other to the ground. But most of all, I loved to ice skate around those huge outdoor rinks decorated with Christmas lights.

That was then and this is now but not much has changed for me.  True it is that I can no longer see the flickering candles, the colorful Christmas lights, and the big fat snowflakes, but this does not prevent me from enjoying this special time of the year.  My sense of smell is still intact along with my sense of taste and I use my memories of years gone by to help me along.  I focus on the times when I could see and intermingle those memories with the now.  I am blessed!  I am lucky!  With or without sight, Christmas is for me!  I am a kid at heart, playing with my talking games, playing my electronic keyboard, and my Christmas CDs.
