A funny moment: When the empty water bottle scared me

Looking back now I can only smile to myself. It was a lighter moment for me.

When I went to sit in my usual spot close to Mom’s chair, I heard something creak and felt something move! I scrambled out of my chair and stood still.

I started to ask Mom what was going on but soon realized that it was only an empty water bottle. What a laugh!

A touch of humour: When I picked up the wrong envelope

It's humorous as I look back on this incident now and a good thing that Mom was there to save me from some embarrassment.  She had asked me to give an envelope to Carl for her that contained a cheque and what did I do?

I picked up the wrong envelope and as I was headed to the door to hand over the envelope Mom caught me in time.  I had the presence of mind to show it to her before handing it over to Carl.

Knowing Carl, he would probably have gone with the envelope to pay Mom’s bill and would not have realized the mistake until he pulled out the envelope from his pocket to pay up.

All in a day’s humour.

Now I can laugh about it! When the mandarin rolled away

Oh boy! I can only describe this experience as one that happened before; one filled with challenge and humor.

On this particular morning, the little mandarin slipped from my fingers and fell onto my kitchen floor and then it decided to roll away.

At first I thought that it had stayed somewhere on my kitchen floor, but no!  It did not!

After searching on my hands and knees and using my cane to help me search, I reasoned that because it had hit the side of my foot when falling, it probably ended up somewhere in my carpeted dining room. I was right.

So, with the utmost of care, I decided to get down on all fours and start searching. My main mission was to ensure that I did not squash it or step on it.

Bingo! I eventually found it lying close to the left leg of one of my dining room chairs. I did not squash it and it remained intact.  What a relief!

What a shock! Packing the wrong pair of pants

Looking back on this particular experience I can only smile to myself. What makes it even more humorous now is that I only discovered it much later.

In the case of this particular pair of pants, I honestly thought that it was my black dress pair of pants and I had packed it to go along with a red dress blouse. I was supposed to have been traveling to Ottawa for a special function.

I ended up not going because of a snowstorm and did not unpack my stuff until about a week later.  Just imagine my surprise when I then discovered my error.

It turns out that the pair of pants that I had packed was purple! I guess that would have been quite an entrance for me if I had, indeed, ended up going to the function!

Such a wonderful person: Hanging out with Sue

Hanging out with Sue is always so very refreshing and enjoyable for me.  Sue is probably one of the best guides that I have ever had.  She knows how to guide a vision-impaired person.  She is careful, thoughtful, and always looking for ways to make things better.

Sue is not afraid to try new things, discover new ways, and find solutions to challenges.

She makes difficult things look so very easy.  She is never afraid to say no but always willing to say yes!

She is funny and helps me to see the humour on difficult days.  She laughs so easily and that's my friend, Sue!

Special memories: Radhica's flowers

I shall forever remember Radhika's flowers.  They have always been so very special to me.  I first got to know this wonderful lady and her daughter in 2011 and since then she has been my regular florist.

I have sent flowers through Radhika to my mom and friends and in turn my mom has used her to send flowers to me.  Radhika has always been a very cheerful person: laughing, joking, and filling my days with humor each time I phone her to place an order.  She is always filled with ideas and never hesitates to share her brightness with me.

There are not too many people like Radhika around today.  She loves her work and her clients.  She aims to please and satisfaction is her top priority and now that I can no longer see those wondrous flowers it sure helps whenever I receive an arrangement from Radhika.

A great memory: Mom and the lizards

Never mind that Mom really does not appreciate having those lizards come too close to her, this is how I also feel.  I cannot see them so I allow my imagination to take over whenever I sense that they are close.

How do I know that they are nearby?  First off, they make a sort of a clacking sound when they are close by and then there is good old Mom!  She normally shrieks and runs away whenever she sees any of them.

She may be opening the door to any of her kitchen or pantry cupboards or she may be in her garden or she may even be in her laundry room when they appear.  I am usually not too far away and her protestations are followed by her reaching for her spray can to spray them.

I usually find all of this very funny and humorous but truth be told I am sure glad that I cannot see these lizards.  I can only use my imagination to figure out what is happening.

Not much difference: Interacting with Mom's TV

This is, indeed, a very interesting but humorous type of interaction for me. At first I had refused to even go near Mom's TV, but in the summer of 2016 I decided to bite the bullet and grab a hold of this situation.

Mom's TV is very moody at the best of times but when she works she really does.  Mom has two separate remotes to make her TV work but I have figured out a way to get around this.

I can turn her TV on and off with the buttons at the top of the TV and I can also increase and decrease the volume the same way. I only need to use the remote to flick the channels.

I do not mind doing it this way because I cannot navigate her remote without being shown where the numbers on the numpad are positioned.  Ah yes!  Just another humorous challenge for me.

A funny experience: Speaking to the wrong person

I have come to accept and enjoy this experience and now that I think of it, it can only occur so many times in a day.  It cannot be helped and I can only say that the best way to deal with this type of experience is to accept that it is going to happen over and over again.

For so many times at a service desk a person will walk away while I am speaking to them to either find something or to answer the phone and I am left either speaking to emptiness or to someone else who may be close by.

Or, how about this?  I may think that I am speaking to a specific person but in reality I am speaking to someone completely different.  This would usually occur when there is more than one person around.  I am speaking to one person but they leave to do something else and I don't know this and I continue to speak.

Or, here is this one!  I think that I am speaking to someone and in reality there is no one in front of me. All in a day's life.

A funny experience: When Sophie left me standing there

I can tell you that this moment was quite humorous to me as, on the whole, Sophie my hairdresser is normally very good to me.

On this particular day I had gone in for my usual hair cut and all had been going as normal.  Sophie had escorted me to the chair where she had washed and dried my hair.

Previous to this she had walked with me from the reception area, taken and hung up my jacket, and then had guided me towards the back of the salon.

So, there I was after the washing and drying had been completed, standing there waiting for Sophie to offer me her arm.  A few seconds had gone by and I did not hear her beside me but just as I was about to call for her I heard one of her workers scurrying towards me and then Sophie exclaiming!

Poor Sophie had just forgotten to escort me and that was okay as it was the first time that she had ever done this.  All in a day's work.

Very humorous: Why she wears her hair piece

Truth be told, I find this to be extremely funny and I am going to share it with you.

In the normal scheme of things, whenever my neighbor answers her door or comes over to see me, she always makes sure to wear her hair piece and she goes to great lengths to ensure that it is on just right.

I cannot see her and so this does not matter to me but for all that it is, she does the same whenever she visits me or answers my knock.

We have laughed at this several times but she still continues to do it and I still continue to smile.  I guess that you can say that old habits die hard.

No lights in my office

Here is another funny story for your reading.  This one also had me chuckling to myself, and my friend and technician was equally amused.

Imran had come over to visit and do some work for me.  I brought him into my office but before he arrived I had turned on the lights in my office, or so I had thought.  I was in for a very rude awakening.

When he asked me to turn on the lights I told him that I had already done so but in his quiet way he told me that I had not.  Then we both figured it out at the same time!  Both of the bulbs had blown so there were no lights in my office.

Imran quickly changed my bulbs, chuckling as he worked and never making me feel stupid!  That's my friend, Imran!

Who are you?

A few months ago I had a very funny experience and at the end of it all I could not help but laugh to myself, wearing a huge smile on my face.

I was standing outside of my condo building, waiting for my friend to pick me up, when I heard a car stop in front of the pick-up area.  Then I heard doors slam and then footsteps approaching.

I knew that it was not my friend because she always says hi to me as she approaches.  So I waited.

The footsteps sounded like two people approaching and I was correct.  They both said good morning to me and then they opened the door.  Then I heard them enter and start searching on the board for the buzzer of the person they were seeking.

I heard them enter the numbers that they wanted and then I waited as I heard the sound of the buzzer as it kept ringing and there was no response.

After a minute or so the two people came out of the building and asked if I could let them in.  At first I hesitated because we are not supposed to let strangers into our building but then I asked in a tentative voice, "And who are you?"

They both responded in unison, "We are the Toronto police!"  Then we all laughed and needless to say that I did as they asked.  Not being able to see them I had no idea who they were.

My friend later laughed as I related this story to her when she finally picked me up.

When the jars got mixed up

Here is another piece of humor for you as I see it.

Not too long ago, I managed to get three of my jars all mixed up. They were of the same size, shape, and height. When I shook each of them, they all sounded alike. What to do?

With no sighted help to lend a hand, I decided to take matters into my own hands. First, I decided to guess and then set to work. How wrong I turned out to be. Pasta sauce was not pasta sauce; it turned out to be a jar of Chinese sweet and sour sauce and then the Chinese sweet and sour sauce turned out to be something entirely different.

My first reaction was to swear at myself but this quickly turned into laughter. It was not my day that day and that's just fine. Stuff happens and why not? All in a day's life for me.
