Having fun! Mom and I continuing to work together

These are priceless memories that I shall treasure forever. Ever since Mom fell in 2023, we have managed to carefully build a team of two.

Every time I visit her, we resume our working relationship. We do so many things together; Mom walking along with the aid of her walker and me walking behind her. Sometimes I would either walk in front of her or beside her.

We water the plants together. We do laundry together. We do so much in the kitchen together. We eat together, and this is our teamwork.

All about Pearl! Celebrating with Pearl

 There is never ever a dull moment whenever I get together with my precious Pearl!  She fills my heart and day with so much laughter, joy, and smiles and this day was no different!

This time, Pearl and I were celebrating the successful completion of my Law Degree.  We both had eggs Benedict and smoked salmon!  Pearl always makes me feel so comfortable and never fails to offer to help me with managing my plate.  That is, to help me cut any difficult food if necessary.  

Just another day spending time with a very precious person.  Thank you, Pearl!

Memories not to forget: On a Hawaiian cruise

Thank God that my friend Sue and I went on our Hawaiian cruise before the Corona tidal wave struck. Thank God that I had her as my sighted assistant or else things would have been quite a bit different and more challenging for me.

As things turned out, we both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and Sue was simply wonderful when it came to guiding me and describing things to me. From beginning to end, when we arrived at the airport and returned to the airport 12 days later, things were very smooth.

The staff on board the Pride of America were very helpful and always there to help. Meal times were without any major hitches and I never felt in any difficulty with Sue to help and staff being watchful.

Our on shore trips were terrific and I thoroughly enjoyed the tubing adventure where Krystal Ijama was simply the best when it came to being my guide. I could not have asked for a more pleasant guide.

I especially enjoyed the morning coffee with Sue on our balcony and the evening chats there as well. The room was so well laid out that I could not have asked for more as a vision-impaired person.

Fun time: Walking with the toddlers

Walking with the little guys could be extremely interesting at times and for me it is almost always very interesting.

On the one hand, I need to get to their levels of height and walk in a bended position with them. On the other hand, they are laughing so hard because they are doing their best to extend their tiny arms up to my level.

Sometimes I take their little hands in mine and we walk jauntily together. At other times they grab on to my little finger and proceed to guide me. These are the times when I need to grin and bear the pain! Then there are times when they simply grab onto my hand and we do our best to walk together.

On the whole, I always find it very refreshing to walk with the toddlers. I always seem to learn something new while we walk. For they chat, laugh, ask questions, tell me about their activities, and so much more.

Lots of fun and laughter: Having fun with Mom and Stephanie

And boy, do we have lots of fun! Stephanie is always so very willing to go anywhere we ask her to. She is careful, watchful, alert, but above all she is cheerful and always trying her best to meet our needs.

From the supermarket to WalMart and from the pharmacy to the restaurant! We have lots of fun wherever we go.

Stephanie is always checking and looking for things for us. She seems to know where everything is and she is always there to assist me whenever I need guiding assistance. She never says no and she is always up for an adventure! Thank you Stephanie!

A good time was had by all: CCB mysteries event, May 03

On May 03, 2019 my CCB mysteries chapter, in collaboration with the CNIB, held a fun evening event. This was our spring event and for the most part it came off as a success.

We served light refreshments and our resident fortune teller, Jason, was a hit. We also played some mystery games and even had time to put on a skit.

The audience was small but quite lively and they appeared to be engaged at all times. A good time was had by all and this is going to help us plan for our next CCB Mysteries event in the fall.

Fun times: Those naughty knitting needles

Over three years later and I still like to refer to my knitting needles as naughty knitting needles. I have learned so much over the years; from Miko, Robbie, and now Rochelle.  

I have learned to work with the large bamboo needles, the middle sized ones, the fine ones, and now the circular needles.  

I wish that I could have progressed more quickly, but as they say: patience is a virtue and more haste means less speed. No use blaming it on those naughty knitting needles. Blame it on me! I need to show them who is the  boss and it is not them! It is me!  

What is my  latest project? I am in the midst of knitting a hat! Good luck to me! And while I’m at it, watch out knitting needles!  Time for us to work together now!

A bit early but never too early: Mrs. Claus comes to town

She certainly did on last November 27th and what a dream come true it was for me! As mentioned in a previous blog, I always wanted to play Mrs. Claus and boy did I ever get my chance!

The folks around the room sure supported my two helpers, Reindeer and Elfy, and me.  Our skit was short and sweet and I did my best to dress the part.

We focused on calling out persons who were naughty and gave a prize away to someone who was nice!  It was all done in fun and fiction!

Fun times! Sorting out my ornaments

This is probably one of my favourite things to do and I can spend a lot of time doing this.  I simply love to make sure that I know what each one is and then to put it in its appropriate place either in my cabinet or on my book shelf.

Now that I have decided to pursue pottery making, I find myself making all kinds of ornaments; from bird houses and gingerbread houses to boats and Christmas trees. 

I am still able to decide what colours I want them to be, but alas!  I can only imagine the colours now because I can no longer see them. 

This definitely does not prevent me from having fun.  I simply love to hold them in my hands and run my fingers up and down and along their widths and lengths.

So happy: Continuing with my knitting

I can't begin to tell you how happy I am  to be able to be continuing with my knitting.  When I lost Robbie in the fall of 2017 I honestly thought that my knitting days were over. But then came Rochelle and now everything is back on track.

Rochelle is fun!  She is entertaining and refreshing!  She is patient and oh so positive!  In short, she is a Godsend and now my knitting is definitely back on track!

I am confident and less hesitant.  I am willing to try and my fingers are definitely more comfortable when working with the wool.

I am now in the midst of making a hat and with some commitment and patience I hope to complete it by the end of this summer.  Then it is on to other things for the fall.

Rochelle has already shown my progress to Robbie.  She recently took pictures of my knitting with her iPhone and sent it to him.  He was so pleased with me.

A moment of pride: My dinner mystery event

On February 23, 2018, I held my latest dinner mystery event and I had such fun hosting this. I am so grateful to all of those who helped me to pull it off.

This event was meant to host a dinner mystery evening for my fellow blind and vision impaired co-frères.  However, like anything else there were some glitches to deal with but for our next event I am confident that we will do much better.

There was dinner, a game show, and then a play that I had written and produced myself.  Everyone had a terrific time and now it is on to the next evening.

My friend forever: Boyo is still in my heart

He was my favourite dog: gentle but social, a bit of a coward but so very loyal.  I loved him the minute he was born; he was my darling Boyo.

As a puppy he was mine.  As a full grown dog he was the same.  He lived with Granny but I never lost my bond with him.  Boyo was always the preferred one and I think that he knew this.

I remembering rushing home from school to play with him when he was a puppy and then always having him beside me whenever we went to the beach.  We played in the sea, ran on the beach, and had such fun in the house.

I was never able to see what he really looked like but when I received my functional vision, his was one of the first pictures that Mom showed me.  I never got to meet him after gaining my vision because he passed away before I could.

Boyo, my dearest, I shall forever remember your bark, your soft fur and your large head.  Your ability to always make me smile!

Don't go anywhere!  I'll see you some day and we'll once more be together! Until we meet again!

Exercising my imagination: Synchronizing the colors

This is something that I continue to do and I believe that it all has to do with the fact that having had functional vision until 2004, I was able to see colors. Now, each time I encounter an object, especially if it is new, I go through the process of synchronizing the color to the object.

Colors shall forever remain in my mind.  Roses will forever be red, skies forever blue, floating clouds always white, and sunrises and sunsets forever yellow and pink, respectively.

I have found this to be a terrific reference point for me because each time I encounter new objects I am able to quickly put color to object.  Most times I ask what color something is and after being told I do the synchronization. But if I do not know, then I put my own color to the new object and this sure helps me to cope.

I try to have fun doing it and most times it puts a smile on my face. Truth be told, though, it also often makes me sad because it makes me realize how much I miss being able to see color.

One of my favorite passions: Is ice skating still for me?

This is a question that I am constantly asking myself and one that has a very ready answer for me.  The final answer is a definite yes!

Ice skating is one of my passions.  It is one that I chose to follow from childhood and, as any true Canadian, one that has filled my heart and mind with so much fun, pleasure, and so much more.

Ice skating has helped to build my confidence.  It has helped me to become more certain of myself and it has sure helped me to conquer and overcome a bit of the unknown.  Ice skating has taught me how to pick myself up after a fall and how to deal with uncertainty: not knowing when I am going to encounter such things as cracks in the ice, water on the ice, and crazy ice skaters darting in and out of my path.

I wish that I could devote a bit more time to my ice skating but I also hope to rectify this in the coming months.  Ice skating has done so much for me and it is a passion that I continue to foster.

Zip lining with my friends

A few months ago my friend Gabriella and her friend Ala took me zip lining for my birthday and I have to tell you that it was probably one of the most fun days in my life. When you are unable to see around you and beneath or above you then it may either scare you or dare you!

It did not really scare me; it sure did dare me! I never knew until much later how high up we were among the trees on that day, about 75 feet according to Gabriella. We did three courses on that very memorable day. We completed a series of various types of walks among the trees. We walked on wires, in cargo nets, and on moving and stationary logs. I had the time of my life!

On that very sunny day, I felt the sun as I zip lined across the paths among the trees. The air was fresh and cool and thank God that Gabriella and Ala were so patient and encouraging to me. Then there was that marvelous staff member, Ali, who sure helped to make things a roaring success.

There is no room in this world for bullying and each day we fail to take action against bullying it is another day that we allow others to bully us and our kids. Our heroes and role models are the ones who have made us proud; those brave young men and women who gave their lives for us in past wars and those who continue to do so. They are not the ones who choose to be racists and those who believe that their bad behaviour in public is acceptable.

I write and record audio mysteries that are being used at such events as murder mystery evenings as well as at public awareness and team building events. I promote understanding, tolerance, and problem solving and my audio mysteries continue to be broadcasted around the world and you can listen to them anywhere! On the plane or train! In the car or right there in your home! On your i device or computer!
