Thank you Susan: Knitting getting better

It has been a very interesting journey as Susan and I continue our weekly lessons. Susan is so very patient and so very entertaining.  She has absolutely no inhibitions when it comes to teaching a blind/vision impaired person.

She fills my lessons with fun, joy, all kinds of tidbits, and oh yes!  Her views on the news of the day. We chat, we laugh, we share and exchange ideas and at the end of the day? My knitting is getting better.

My baby blanket is progressing quite nicely. The so-called loopies are smaller!

Looking forward: My baby afghan project

I think that for now I’ll settle for this project as I work with Susan.  I have to say that Susan is really so easy to work with.  She is always ready to hear me out and then she makes her suggestions.

Knitting has not come very easy for me but I am bound and determined to make it work.  Susan is patient, always so very cheerful, and always so very willing to entertain a new idea.

So, let us move forward now to enjoy my knitting.

She is special! My new knitting teacher

She is like a breeze in a bottle!  Refreshing, patient, positive, and so very willing to work with me.

I had no difficulty telling Susan how frustrated I was with myself because I was still having problems with my stitches: making sure that I was not knitting double stitches or dropping stitches.

Susan is definitely going to help me avoid these types of errors and we have already defined my first projects.  To work on a baby blanket.  She is eager and extremely entertaining.  I am a very lucky lady!

A work in progress: Still persisting with my knitting

Despite my best efforts to stay connected with my knitting, I am finding that I need to put in that extra effort to do so. I am determined to stay with my knitting and to make something of it.

Heck, I put a lot of work into this initiative and I am not about to give it up very easily. So, here we go; on to finishing my hat and then moving on to something else.  I will not give up for a lack of motivation.

Knitting is relaxing and helps me to concentrate more on what I need to be doing. It is what I call my quiet time activity.

Fun times: Those naughty knitting needles

Over three years later and I still like to refer to my knitting needles as naughty knitting needles. I have learned so much over the years; from Miko, Robbie, and now Rochelle.

I have learned to work with the large bamboo needles, the middle sized ones, the fine ones, and now the circular needles.

I wish that I could have progressed more quickly, but as they say: patience is a virtue and more haste means less speed. No use blaming it on those naughty knitting needles. Blame it on me! I need to show them who is the  boss and it is not them! It is me!

What is my  latest project? I am in the midst of knitting a hat! Good luck to me! And while I’m at it, watch out knitting needles!  Time for us to work together now!

So happy: Continuing with my knitting

I can't begin to tell you how happy I am  to be able to be continuing with my knitting.  When I lost Robbie in the fall of 2017 I honestly thought that my knitting days were over. But then came Rochelle and now everything is back on track.

Rochelle is fun!  She is entertaining and refreshing!  She is patient and oh so positive!  In short, she is a Godsend and now my knitting is definitely back on track!

I am confident and less hesitant.  I am willing to try and my fingers are definitely more comfortable when working with the wool.

I am now in the midst of making a hat and with some commitment and patience I hope to complete it by the end of this summer.  Then it is on to other things for the fall.

Rochelle has already shown my progress to Robbie.  She recently took pictures of my knitting with her iPhone and sent it to him.  He was so pleased with me.

She is just so refreshing: My new knitting teacher

She is bubbly and she is simply a going concern.  She is exciting and she is a people's person.  Her name is Rochelle and since October 2017 I have been continuing my knitting lessons with her.

She came to me after my previous teacher, Robbie, left his post at The Purple Purl knitting shop and took another job.  It was Robbie who recommended her to me.

I feel that I need to re-commit myself to my knitting as I have not spent enough time with it and I am committed to doing just that.  I am going to spend more time concentrating on what I need to do in order to be a good knitter.

Last Christmas I won a knitting basket in a raffle and then Robbie sent me a ball of wool with which to make a hat.  So I am on my way.

Patience builders: Knitting and pottery

I have to admit that before I started to learn how to knit and do pottery, my patience was not always the best; a few years ago I decided to do something about this.  You see, I wanted to change my approach to life and to the world around me and I felt strongly that part of the solution would be for me to improve my patience.

So, off I went and after a bit of pondering I came up with these two activities.  For the past 3 years I have been knitting and doing pottery and I have seen a big improvement.  These two activities have taught me so much when it comes to not just building patience but also learning how to work better on my own, how to develop alternative approaches, and how to find ways to improve my creativity and innovation.

I truly enjoy my knitting and pottery and I hope to stick with these two hobbies for a very long time to come.

Great times: Getting better with my knitting

When I made the decision to learn how to knit in the fall of 2014, my objective was to use this activity to build my perseverance for patience and I am happy to report that I have more than met my objective.

At first I was very skeptical as to how a vision-impaired person could learn to knit.  Especially me, who at that time was just a bit short on my patience.  When I started out I already knew that there were people who were vision-impaired and who were good knitters.  However, I needed to convince myself.

My first teacher was Miko, a very patient young lady with tons of patience and a willingness to help me get over my hesitation.  The first few months were very trying ones for me as I struggled to get familiar with casting on and casting off and then knitting rows.

I often ran into great difficulty trying to control my spiraling but Miko persevered with me and by the time she left on maternity leave in early April 2016, I felt as if I was finally beginning to crawl but I knew that I had a very long way to go.

Then in came Robbie!  A dynamic young man with tons of ideas, the patience of Job, and someone who was not going to allow me to give up!  He persevered, encouraged, pushed, and filled my lessons with stories and lots of mugs of delicious English breakfast tea!

Today I am much better at controlling my spiraling.  I can cast on and off without much difficulty and I am much better at knitting multiple rows at a time.  I am working with both thin and thick wool.  I can troubleshoot much more easily now and get myself out of trouble without too much panic.

I give a huge thanks to Miko, Robbie, and folks at the Purple Purl knitting store!

So much to learn and laugh about: Learning lots with Robbie, my knitting teacher

Like my pottery classes, I have been attending my knitting sessions for some time now, about two and a half years.  I can tell you that I have absolutely no regrets.  I decided to take up knitting in order to build my ability to be more patient and it sure has paid off for me.

First I had Miko as a teacher and she was absolutely wonderful. But when she went on maternity leave about a year ago I got Robbie and what a fantastic teacher and person he has been to me.

Robbie has taught and continues to teach me so much, not just knitting skills but other things as well.  I have learned how to persevere in a more efficient way and how to focus more clearly.

I have learned how to not give up too easily and how to better analyze problems before coming up with suggested solutions. I have also learned how not to panic too easily.

My sense of touch has increased and gotten better.  My problem-solving skills have improved noticeably, but above all, Robbie has taught me that there are no barriers to learning.

Once you put your mind to it, the outcome will be what you desire and being vision-impaired is no excuse.  You just need to find ways to overcome.

A definite challenge: When the ball of wool went haywire

This is what happened to me when I decided to do some knitting during the summer of 2016.  I had carefully packed my knitting needles and wool into a bag and off I went.

All was going well until I discovered that something was not right. There were knots in the wool and I seemed to have been finding two ends to the wool instead of only seeing one end.

Then stitches began to go astray and things just simply went from bad to worse.  My poor mom decided to help me and spent hours trying to unravel the wool.  This worked for a bit but then the same old problem returned and before long I decided to abandon ship, so to speak.

Throughout the summer I kept glancing into my knitting bag from time to time to see if I could solve the problem but no go. I was really sorry.

Upon my return to home in Toronto I went to knitting class and my teacher, Robbie, quickly found the reason for my having gotten into trouble. The wool had snagged on the sticky ends of an empty package of needles. Ouch!  I had no idea and now I am much more careful when putting away my knitting.

Just my thoughts: Knitting builds patience

I have found that after almost one year of taking knitting lessons, my propensity for patience has definitely improved.  Knitting is a very interesting activity for me.  I am forced to depend solely on my fingers and sense of touch to help me navigate in and out of stitches.

Knitting is exact.  You either do it right or you run into errors. But the good thing is that you can easily correct your errors once you find them.  I love the fact that there are different sized needles for doing various tasks.

My teacher, Miko, is very patient but she is now off on maternity leave for a while and I have a new teacher and his name is Robbie.  I had previously met Robbie and he is very nice.  So I am looking forward to continuing my knitting and my patience-building.

Making sure my knitting is on track

I have been knitting for almost a year now and my passion and excitement for this wonderful activity has not fluctuated in the least. When you have a wonderful teacher such as Miko, you have all of the ingredients that you should need to keep on going.

I took up knitting to try and improve my patience and I can tell you that it has worked.  At first I thought that a blind person would not be able to knit but this is not true.  I have friends who are blind and who knit.

I have had some challenging days as we move forward.  Problems with not knitting the same stitch twice, dropping stitches, and making sure that I always keep my working yarn in the right place.

I started with the larger needles and the thicker yarn but now I have moved on to the thinner yarn and smaller needles.  It is my hope that before long I'll start to knit bunnies for babies.  This is my first project and now I just have to learn to be consistent.

I have invested in a handbook for knitters in Braille along with a needle master kit.  Hopefully this will encourage me to keep on knitting.

Bunnies for babies

I may still be struggling with learning how to work with those size six needles.  They are thinner than what I am used to working with and the wool is also thinner but I am bound and determined to soldier on and to realize my project.   This being to make bunnies for babies.

It may take me a while to get to where I want to but I am sure determined and my knitting teacher, Miko, is very willing to wait for me to get there.

I used to think that being blind would be a drawback for me but not so.  I can use my fingers to do the seeing, so to speak.  All I have to do is to concentrate, be patient, and all will turn out well for me.

This is why I took up knitting, to improve and increase my affinity to be more patient with myself.  I'll get there sooner than later, smile!

Enjoying my knitting lessons

In 2014 I decided to take the plunge and start taking knitting lessons and I can tell you that I have never regretted it.

It all comes down to having a great teacher who is not afraid to work with me despite my blindness. Miko is fun. She is extremely creative and nothing stands in her way. Her assistants are also extremely helpful and encouraging and I am happy to report that for the Fall of 2015 we will be embarking on a project to make bunnies for babies.

My knitting lessons are so much fun, so enjoyable, and they absolutely clear my mind of clutter.

Knitting for me is relaxing and something to do with my hands when I simply just want to sit and vegetate, as they say. It comes easy to me and I have learned how to fix stitches, drop stitches, plus so much more. Knitting, as they say, is barrier free to me as a blind person and I am looking forward to continuing to work with Miko.

If you live in Toronto then why not drop by her Purple Purl store? Give her a call at (416)364-1162. Her store is in the Leslieville area.

My new knitting teacher

Finally I can say that I am well on my way to learning how to knit. After several frustrating months of trying to find the person who is not afraid to teach a blind person how to knit, I have found her and for the last few months I have been working with her.

Her name is Miko and she works at the Purple Purl knitting store in Leslieville, Toronto. To date, I have had a few lessons with her and now I can safely say that I know how to use both needles to produce the basic knitting stitch and in addition I now know how to fix dropped stitches.

Miko is not afraid to teach a blind person. She is patient and creative. She has a terrific attitude and is always watching closely to make sure that I can follow her instructions. She has given me some interesting tests: dropping stitches and asking me to find them and repair them. She has shown me how to use stitch markers and how to use those rubber needle tips to prevent stitches from dropping. Her instructions are very clear and precise and she explains things in a very easy to understand manner.

I am really glad that I have persisted thus far and I look forward to becoming more competent at knitting.

This is a personal message from author Donna Jodhan
"Each time we raise our voice at someone else we are engaging in bullying! Each time we raise our hands to slap or punch someone else we are also engaging in bullying and each time we engage in actions to either manipulate or force someone else to do what we want we are also engaging in bullying!

There is no room in this world for bullying and each day we fail to take action against bullying it is another day that we allow others to bully us and our kids. Our heroes and role models are the ones who have made us proud; those brave young men and women who gave their lives for us in past wars and those who continue to do so. They are not the ones who choose to be racists and those who believe that their bad behaviour in public is acceptable.

I write and record audio mysteries that are being used at such events as murder mystery evenings as well as at public awareness and team building events. I promote understanding, tolerance, and problem solving and my audio mysteries continue to be broadcasted around the world and you can listen to them anywhere! On the plane or train! In the car or right there in your home! On your i device or computer!

Please join my campaign against bullying (CAB) by supporting my efforts to keep on writing and recording!
If you truly care then you will certainly dare!"

Learning to knit

A few months ago I decided to take up knitting because I wanted to find an outlet to learn a new craft. I contacted a store that sells knitting supplies and the instructor decided to give me some lessons. She was very kind and extremely patient but I knew that she was very apprehensive. She had never taught a blind person before so she kept looking to my friend for ways to explain things to me. For me this was something entirely new, so I had to be patient and find ways to be innovative in my thinking. I had two lessons with her and then I stopped because I wanted to think things through for myself.

I am still thinking today but I do plan to take it up again. A new venture for me: learning how to hold the needles, when to cast off, and pull through, getting into a routine for myself. Hopefully I will resume my knitting soon.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly accessibility advocate, wishing you a terrific day and urging you to go out there and tell others about my knitting experience. Visit
