One of my dreaded moments: Installing a new computer

Any time I am forced to install a new computer I am really never prepared.  For there are so many moving parts to take care of and I can readily admit that I spend many sleepless nights before the actual day.

I also admit that I procrastinate for as long as I can before having to do this.  For if I miss just one tiny part of this very mountainous process, so many things can go wrong.  

And it is at these times that I really lean on sighted assistance to help me out.  Too many things to do!  To ensure that all relevant pieces of software are installed and that all pieces of access technology software are in place.  Above all, everything needs to be thoroughly tested. I cannot afford to forget anything!  From my email client to the email settings and so on.

Oh, boy!   It can sure be a nightmare if I do not take the greatest of care!  Patience, patience!

See what Covid is doing! New challenges with online exams

The event of Covid has definitely brought many new and unexpected challenges when it comes to taking online exams and as a vision-impaired person, times have become very interesting.

For the most part, the proctoring software does not seem to be working and for me to use a webcam is extremely difficult. In addition, I need to ensure that my screen reading software can communicate adequately with whatever software is being used.

I also need to ensure that websites are navigable and usable for me. As my dad used to say, there is always going to be a workaround; we just need to find it.

A sober reality: Fear of more scams

It is only natural and realistic to expect that more scams are going to be the order of the day now, and that scammers and hackers are going to get even more daring. For those with a disability and focusing on those with a

vision impairment, this is not good news.

For me, as a vision-impaired person, I need to ensure that I am on top of things at all times. That I do not falter, fall down on the job as they say, or be caught napping.

Especially so when it comes to paying extra attention to those websites that ask me to check out their offers, phone calls with automated messages, and emails with false queries.

I need to ensure that the scam protection software on my computers is always up to date. So much to do but I have no choice.

A tedious task: Getting rid of old software

I need to make sure that when I get rid of old software, it is indeed old software and not something that I should be holding on to.

So, in order to avoid throwing out the wrong thing and keeping the right thing, here is what I do.

I label each piece of software by placing braille labels on their packages or boxes. Then I arrange them in a logical order, either on my book shelves or in my drawers in some sort of order that I can understand. If I am

ambitious enough and if there is no printed label on said boxes or packages, I get sighted assistance to place printed labels on packages and boxes.

The important thing for me to remember is that I am the one who needs to be able to find what I am searching for.
