Well organized : Returning cable boxes

 

 This is what I needed to do when I switched from Rogers to Bell for my Internet service. Thank goodness that Lane, the Bell technician, was there to help out. He packaged everything for me.

Then Susan explained to me what I needed to do. Then Stephie and I went off to the post office to complete the process.

All that I can say is that I am very fortunate that I had these 3 wonderful people to help me.  Or else it would have been extremely difficult to do it on my own.  In fact, almost impossible.

A necessary activity: Sorting the mail upon my return

 This is probably one of the most mundane tasks for me and each time I return from a trip I need to do this.

When my friend Gubby looked after things for me, she used to separate things into 2 piles, one for me, one for Mom, and then another pile for other mail.

Now, however, with Nick helping me everything goes into one main pile with magazines off to one side and the rest of the mail in another pile.

Thank goodness that I have Stephie to help me out.  I work with her to sort again, open and read.

Out of my hands! The elusive FEDEX box

Shortly after the Covid lock down began in 2020, I started to ship monthly boxes of goodies to my mom via FEDEX and for the most part it has worked beautifully. But in march 2022 my luck changed for a brief twinkle.

I can only guess why on this occasion the box seemed to have gotten lost and it took two weeks for it to reach Mom.  I am guessing that maybe it occurred because I had included one of Mom’s hearing aids in the box which I had brought back with me for repairs.

All well and good but what frustrates me is that during this ordeal no one could really give me a reason as to why the box was not being delivered.  No one seemed to want to take responsibility.

I would say, however, that thanks to a good phone system at FEDEX, it was easier for me, as a vision-impaired person, to be able to gain info instead of having to go online.

A Covid creation: A new way to keep Mom up to date

These Covid times have certainly forced me to think of ways to do various things and keeping Mom up to date with my life is no different. I still continue to phone her as regularly as I can but I also need to reassure her that I am healthy and looking good. So, what do I do in order to accomplish

this?

Well, I have developed a system whereby my neighbour and friends take photos of me doing various activities with their i devices. Next they email these images to me and then I get them printed off. Finally, I send them to her in a Fedex package at the end of every month.

It is not as complicated as one may think. Just a few steps for Mom to stay in touch. I can also fall back on my old and trusted collaboration with my sister-in-law Gayle who is only too happy to help to set up Facetime sessions for Mom and me whenever she is able to.

One step at a time: Negotiating my mailbox

After the post office changed how it delivers parcels to us, I had to make a slight adjustment and now this is how it works.

If we receive a huge parcel that is unable to fit into our regular mailbox, it is placed into a larger community mailbox which is located at the back of the regular boxes. The mail person leaves a key in our regular mailbox and it has a tag that has both Braille and large print written on it.

The Braille is easy to read and so, too, is the large print because it is raised. So, all I need to do is to be able to find where the larger boxes are. Thanks to the post office and their initiative, this too is easy as the labels on the larger boxes are extremely easy to read. Very pleasing for me.

Something new: The joys of texting

I am not sure why it took me so very long to become a part of the texting crowd but now I have to admit that it is fast becoming a habit for me.

No more having to spend time composing emails on the fly. All I need to do now is to text simple messages. Then I know that it will be more reliable than sending emails, providing technology cooperates.

The joy is that I can either dictate or speak my texts or even type them. Whereas with emails I only have the choice of typing.

I still am at the stage where I do not abbreviate words and sentences and hopefully it will stay this way. I really do not like those abbreviations.

A new adventure: Mailing Mom's magazines

It is a new adventure for me and I started this in early March 2019.  Every week I go off to the pharmacy with Stephanie and together we choose and pay for Mom’s magazines.

Next we go to a side counter and Stephanie addresses the envelope and then we place the mags into it. Finally, we move across to the post office and there we mail the package.  

Sounds easy? It is after we both get used to doing this weekly task. The challenge is for me to ensure that Stephanie chooses the right mags. And how do I do this?

By making sure that she tells me exactly what she is choosing when she does so.

A must do: Got to Braille those envelopes

For me, it is probably the best way to keep track of my mail and the contents of my files.  If I do not Braille my envelopes then I am afraid that I will be totally lost and helpless and this will only lead to me being confused, thrown completely off track, and then I will need to depend on sighted assistance to help sort out my stuff.

Thank goodness that I started doing this many years ago, and when I lost my vision almost completely in 2004 I will say that Brailling my envelopes saved my sanity.

Sometimes I may forget but then I quickly get back on track. Good thing that I have wonderful friends that I trust to help me stay on track. It is a relief when I can go to my file folders and find what I am searching for without any help from the sighted world.

This strategy works: A new way to sort my mail

Now that I have limited ways to identify my mail I have had to come up with some interesting ways to sort it so that whenever I have sighted assistance I can make sure that most, if not all, of the junk is not in my mail pile.

First, the magazines. I am only interested in two specific magazines.  Those are for Mom and I know them by how they feel. The Hello! magazine is thick and smooth to the touch and the Examiner magazine is slim and has a sticker at the bottom.

Next comes bills and it’s a good thing that most all of my bills come to me via email although there are a few that I have to look out for. I know the feel of them so I am readily able to identify them.

Then there are other types of mail that I need to pay more attention to. If the envelope has 2 windows then I know that it is junk, or if it is larger and smooth then it is almost certain that this, too, is junk.

I am extremely careful and I need to make sure that I am looking out for expected mail, as well.  Anything that I am not sure about I use my flatbed scanner to help me out and in most cases it works.

Extra precaution: Making sure with my mail

I have always had and shall always need a very disciplined approach when it comes to sorting my mail, and why?

Because I need to ensure that I keep what I need to keep and not throw it out in error and to throw away those mails that are what I call junk mail.  In many cases it is not too hard for me to decipher but I still need to be watchful.  I use my Ipal Solo stand-alone scanner to help me out but once in a while my trusted scanner is unable to read accurately and I either need to guess or seek sighted assistance. 

Nevertheless, I am careful and watchful each time I sort my mail.  We are living in a world where scammers are everywhere and they are only waiting to pounce whenever we give them the slightest of opportunities to take advantage of our slip ups.  That is, when we inadvertently become a wee bit careless and throw away important mail in our garbage.
