Mom and I working together: Knocking on the cupboard doors

 

This is just one way that Mom and I communicate.
Here is how: She sends me off to fetch something for her.
She tells me which cupboard it is in and then I begin to knock on the doors as I walk around her kitchen.
I knock and she says no if it is not the right door.
She says yes when I knock on the right door.

Next I open the door and she tells me which shelf and which part of the shelf.

This is working like a charm and I really like it. Mom is happy and I am happy.

Very frustrating! Over there or over where?

This is probably one of the most challenging circumstances for me to deal with and I can only do my best to live with it.  It all takes place whenever someone in a store or supermarket tells me “over there.”  

Over there really does not mean much to me, especially so when someone either points to a spot or makes some other sort of visual sign.  I need to be given specific directions or I’ll be asking, over where?

I need to ensure that those directing me can describe what or where they wish me to go.  Pointing or giving me some sort of a visual sign does not help me.

Nor does nodding help me.  I am unable to hear when a head movement is used or pointing is used.

Confusion reigns! When noisy places challenge me

Yes, they sure do and I know that I am not the only one here.  The biggest challenge for me is that when I am unable to hear because my surroundings are super noisy, it sure affects my ability to navigate effectively, to engage, and to communicate.

As someone who is vision impaired, I depend almost exclusively on my sense of hearing and when noise affects my ability to hear then it is practically impossible to navigate, engage, and communicate.  Added to this is when masks are being worn and then combine this with a noisy environment then everything turns horrible.

Good way to go! Rest and relax

This is what I almost always do anytime I find myself getting off track and this usually happens anytime there is either too much noise around me or I have become overwhelmed with attempting to do too many things all at once.

This is really no different for anyone but in the case of too much noise around me, it affects my ability to negotiate and navigate my surroundings. With precious little sight I need to know where things are because I cannot see my surroundings.  

So, what do I do?  I just do my best to minimize noise around me. It is not always easy to do this but I do the best I can.

We need to pay more attention! Scam scares

 

At the best of times scam scares, as I call them, are  horrible nightmares for us all. But, as a blind/vision-impaired person, it is even more so.  What does this all mean for me?

It means that I need to be overly watchful.  I have to be on the alert at all times and I need to depend on being able to be logical, sensible, and to use all of my senses to help me navigate.

It is even more so because of my lack of vision.  I cannot read facial expressions.  I cannot read printed forms, and I need to use every ounce of energy to listen and comprehend as much as possible.

A refresher for me: Reacquainting myself with the elevator buttons

For some very odd reason I was recently having problems finding the button for the ground floor in my condo complex's elevators.  No, it had nothing to do with poor markings on the buttons.  These were perfectly marked but it all had to do with my not being able to find the right button for the ground floor.

I struggled for a wee bit, even getting lost once or twice, but then Stephanie came to my rescue.  She found the perfect way to reacquaint me with everything.

First, she showed me how to locate the large button at the bottom of the group of buttons. This is the button, or should I call it the keyhole, where staff can insert a key to unlock or lock the elevator.  Next, she expertly guided my fingers to find the button for the ground floor, which is dead straight ahead of the keyhole.

The keyhole is very different to the touch in comparison to the other buttons.  It is more rounded, smaller, and is definitely different to the touch.

Everything worked like a charm after this and now I can navigate the buttons in the elevator without any difficulty.

A nerve-racking experience: Traveling in a snow storm

For as much as I truly enjoy walking in the snow, and even so during a storm, I grudgingly admit that there are some real challenges for me to acknowledge.

For example: 

It is more difficult to navigate and find landmarks with my cane when the snow is coming down.

It is more difficult for me to hear what is going on around me.

I need to assume better control of my cane as it would tend to get stuck in snow banks as I walk.

Crossing streets is more difficult as I need to ensure that I am in the right spot to cross and that I am hearing and deciphering the traffic flow.

I must pay closer attention to whatever landmarks I can find.

A sweet kid: Walking with Tyler

How I enjoy walking with this wonderful little kid! He is always so pleasant, ever so helpful, and so very chatty and always asking questions.

I need to use a bit of a different technique when walking with him. He reaches me just under my shoulder so it may not be a good idea for me to take his arm. So we hold hands!

Tyler does not seem to mind. He has a running commentary on everything around me and tells me whenever I need to know if there are bumps or curbs coming up.  When he opens the car door, he tells me exactly where the door is and guides me very carefully around everything. That's my little friend Tyler!

An embarrassing experience: At the wrong meeting

Nothing could be more embarrassing than realizing that you are at the wrong meeting and especially so when you are seated in the middle of the room and you need to find a way to exit without being noticed. It does not matter

whether or not you are vision impaired; the embarrassment is the same!

This is what happened to me in late September 2019. I thought that I was in the right place at the right time but when I realized that I was not, I had to depend on Stephanie to guide me out of the room.

I am not sure if anyone noticed or moreover if anyone really cared. I did and as I walked swiftly out of the room with Stephanie and her young son Tyler, I could only bow my head in embarrassment.  What if Stephanie was not with me?

That would have been even more difficult for me, as a vision impaired person.

A nice time: At the Walmart store

I have come to enjoy my visits to the Walmart store: a huge, busy, and extremely cluttered facility!  Lots to hear, lots to discover, and so much to listen to!

The clothes racks are packed to overflowing. The aisles are a bit narrow and filled with shoppers shopping and browsing. It is difficult to drive the shopping cart without having to avoid obstacles. My one piece of 

advice is that, for a vision-impaired person, one should definitely take along a trusted escort who can help you to navigate.

So far, I have had Mom and Stephanie with me and these two wonderful escorts are simply the best! Guiding me, protecting me from obstacles and giving top notch descriptions of everything in my path!

Respecting the limits: Realizing

Yes, it is all about realizing my limits; when to push ahead and when to stop!

I use my sense of smell to help me do a lot of my navigating. Next comes my sense of touch and then my sense of taste. But the most used sense is my hearing.

All of my senses work in tandem and I need to depend on each in separate ways. Sometimes it is fun to realize but on occasion it is not as fun.

Ah, yes! Just another lifelong experience.

Always interesting: Navigating when family is around

My family is probably one of the most understanding bunch when it comes to being around me. In fact, they are so very helpful, so very caring, and always willing to go the extra mile to ensure that I am included and catered to.

I simply do not need to worry when navigating around them. They are all there to guide me, show me the way, and lend lots of humor while everything is going on.

From assisting when meals are being served to giving me their ready arms while walking to helping me find a seat or anything else; they are all there for me and I have absolutely no concerns when navigating around them!

Fun and games: Tiny steps to avoid tiny toys

This is the fun and games strategy for me whenever I am around those little ones who are playing on the floor with their little toys.  The object of the game is for me to ensure that I do not step, not just on their toys, but also on them!

As someone with several cousins who were much younger than me, I had a lot of practice doing this growing up. Then, when I had nieces and nephews later on, my strategy came in handy.  

I was always anxious to ensure that I did not step on anything or anyone and the way to do that was to take tiny steps as nothing else would work for me.  Of course, I ran into difficulty from time to time but I am happy to report that I survived it all.

Developing a new strategy: Searching for the cotton balls

This was another experience for me: searching for cotton balls on Mom's dresser in her bathroom.  

The biggest hint was that they were in a small glass jar but I needed to ensure that I took my time to find said jar.  So, I needed to be extremely careful in navigating amongst the various objects on her dresser.

I developed a plan in that I started on the top lefthand corner of the dresser and worked my way across to the top righthand corner.  Then I would return to the lefthand side and repeat the process going from left to right and going downward.

After a few minutes I found my target and with very gentle fingers I lifted the lid and voila! I had found my cotton balls!

A cherished childhood memory: Remembering Stephen in his stroller

He was six years my junior but my aunt trusted me enough to drive him around in his stroller. For not only was I that age but I was also vision impaired and she never seemed to mind me taking him for little rides up and down our hallways.

There he was in his stroller! Very quiet and minding his own little business, so to speak. Sometimes he would be asleep but sometimes he would be drinking his bottle or even humming to himself. He never gave me any trouble and I was always so careful to make sure not to bump into things.

I had two paths to choose from. The first took me from our kitchen, into my parents room, around the bed and out again and then up the hallway to the door of the living room and back to where I started in the kitchen.

The other path would be one where I would travel up the long hallway going past the laundry room, the bathrooms, and rounding the corner past the little area that held the ironing board, clothes baskets, and couch.  Then through one of our larger bedrooms and through the doors to another hallway where there were three more bedrooms.

I stayed clear of going into the bedrooms, choosing instead to drive Stephen in his stroller down the very long hallway. I will say that this was indeed my favourite path. Then back on the return journey to the kitchen.

I don't really know which of the two paths was Stephen's favourite but nevertheless, he enjoyed it all and so did I!

Another interesting experience: Navigating Mom's bathroom scale

I guess that every scale is a bit different when it comes to being able to navigate it in order to know exactly where to place one's feet when preparing to get weighed. For me, I have a talking scale which I find to be just the right size.

There is a bar at the top of the scale that is in the middle of it. I place one foot on each side of the bar and wait seconds to hear the results. I can hear the results in either pounds or kilos.

In the case of Mom's scale, I need to depend on Mom or sighted assistance to get my results. True it is that her scale is quite a bit smaller and there is also a small bar in the middle of the scale at the top of it, but the trick is to place my feet in the correct position or else my weight will not be accurate.

Then Mom also needs to ensure that the scale is on and working before I get onto it. She needs to ensure that the batteries are functioning before we start our weighing session.

Always a pleasure: Reacquainting with Mom's home

This is one of my annual summer events: reacquainting myself with Mom's home when I go there to spend time with her.

It is really not that difficult because she rarely changes very much around, nor does she rearrange too much. Nevertheless, she is always there to show me what she has done.

She is so very proud of her home and she ought to be! Everything has its place! Things are arranged in very simple and logical order and it is never difficult for me to find anything!

Her cupboards are arranged in total order and every item has its place! From the food cupboard to the kitchen cupboard and from the medicine cabinets to every single drawer!

I can always find what I am looking for and I don't get lost whenever I am searching for something. It is as if she knows exactly what to keep out of my way so that I do not bump into things!

She knows exactly where everything is and bless her! Her directions for me whenever she asks me to fetch something are precise and on the money!

A great discovery: A new way to find washrooms on aircrafts

I have found a new way to find my way to washrooms on aircrafts. The old method of pressing the call button still works but thanks to my friend, Rebecca, with whom I traveled in late January to England, I now have another way.

It works like this! Whenever I feel the need to visit the washroom, I pick up my cane, leave my seat, and start walking towards the washroom. Bingo! There is always an attendant nearby who will see me walking towards the washroom and in a flash they are there beside me to render assistance.

The thing is that I never even thought of this technique before Rebecca introduced it to me and it works like a charm!

A truly tremendous experience: Navigating Jilla's house

I can tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed navigating Jilla's house when I visited her in London, England at the end of January 2019.  In short, it was an experience to remember.

With Jilla acting as tour guide and her family to watch over me, it was not as intimidating as I had first thought it would be.  Jilla had warned me about all of the steps that I would need to navigate and as a vision-impaired person I felt that I would need to be extra careful. But everything worked out just fine.

I enjoyed going up and down the steps and learning how to hold on and walk sideways.  I enjoyed the challenge and I always knew that Jilla and her family would be there to catch me if I ever ran into difficulty.

Jilla and her family were simply super when it came to showing me the way. An experience to cherish and keep forever.
