Yellow is my favourite colour: My new yellow suitcase

Oh yes, I will always admit that yellow is my favourite colour! And this is why I asked Jilla to buy me a nice new yellow suitcase on Amazon when I was in the UK.

She is sleek. Her wheels run so very silently and she is ever so easy to maneuver. She will definitely do the trick when I take her on her next journey.

Not sure when but can’t wait to see what others think of her.

My world forever! My yellow world

My yellow world has been with me for as long as I can remember and now with precious little vision to enjoy my favourite colour, I use my vast memory bank to help me live in my yellow world.

As a kid I had a yellow cup, yellow mug, yellow plate and saucer and everything around me at the meal table was yellow.  I thank my parents and Granny for having entertained my desires.

Then, most of my clothes were yellow: shorts, dresses, pants, shirts, and t shirts.  Skirts, jackets, sweaters, accessories and so much more.

When I grew into adulthood, the yellow desires continued and now as I move along, even my IPHONE and IPAD are yellow.   I am just not sure why my world has always been yellow.

As a child playing on the beach, my spade and bucket were yellow.  My beach ball was yellow and one of our dogs named Yeller was yellow.

Even the logo of my company, and most of the cover art to my audio mysteries are all yellow.  I guess that I must be in great company because the sun is also yellow.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly sight-loss coach and accessibility advisor, wishing you a terrific day.

My very special childhood friend: Remembering Pidge

He was my little yellow budgie! He was my little childhood friend and he was always ready to play with me each time I stuck my finger through the bars of his cage and placed it onto his perch.

Playful Pidge loved for me to visit him. He would climb onto my finger and peck gently at it. He was a wonderful little friend who loved to sing, do summersaults at the bottom of his cage, and he loved to socialize with the
family.

Pidge lived for 7 years and when he finally left us I cried all day for him. I always looked forward to greeting him each day when I came home from school. Mom would always joke that he was waiting for me and maybe, just
maybe, he was.

We took him with us on holidays to the beach and made sure that his cage was placed on a window sill so that he could see outside during the day. He simply loved it all, especially being able to enjoy having the sun shine into
his cage and cover his little body with warmth.

That was my buddy, Pidgie!

Forever my treasured memory: My beloved buttercup

So many memories for me to love, cherish, and guard forever whenever I think of my beloved buttercup. I thank God that when I first met this beautiful flower I had just enough vision to appreciate it!

She was tall, yellow which is my favourite colour, and she was so smooth and strong. I met her when I was just a wee one and I always looked forward to when our teachers would take us for walks up the hill.

There she was, just waiting for me to come looking for her. Our teachers would show us where to find the buttercups and then they would help us to pick whichever one we wished.

Sometimes I would pick just one but most of the time I would pick two or three.  Then I would hold them fervently in my little hands, holding onto them with all of my tiny might.

I would touch them gently, hold them upright, and simply admire their bright yellow colour.  I would bring them up to my nose and smell them and there was a sweet smell that was not too strong; just strong enough for my nostrils.

Oh, how I loved these beauties of nature and they bring back so many super childhood memories for me.

My golden friend: My new iPhone

Call me crazy but I am extremely attached to my iPhones. When I had to say so long to my little yellow iPhone 5C, it was very painful for me.  I bade her a fond farewell and then I turned to my new friend, an iPhone 8 that is gold in colour.

She is fast and so very easy to navigate.  She has so many new features that I truly like.  Powering on is very easy and powering off is a gem.  My new little friend is everything that I had ever hoped for plus so much more.

Ah, yes!  The joys of technology but there are also the infrequent times when technology can be your enemy or, at best, a thorn in one's side.

Little Christmas tree

It was the night before Christmas and in my dreams I slipped lazily and happily into memory lane.  Another time had come and as I stood there, the little Christmas tree twinkled in front of my eyes.  The tree smelled so wonderful!  It gave off the scent of warm pine.  The colored lights danced in front of my eyes as they took turns blinking on and off.

I moved, oh so carefully, towards my little Christmas tree, being careful not to step on packages neatly piled in front of it.  I had to get as close as I could so as to see everything.  My partial sight only allowed me the luxury of seeing things very close up and at best only a few things at a time. Nevertheless, it was enough for me.

I gingerly reached out and placed my index finger on one of the little lights, a little yellow one.  Then I took my time at identifying other colors.  Red, blue, and green. Then I had to take my time at finding a spot where there were no lights.  I found it after a few moments and I held a tiny portion of a branch between my fingers.

Next I looked upwards and found the star at the very top.  I stood gazing for quite some time thinking of the story that my parents would tell me every Christmas: the night that Jesus was born.  What a lovely memory for me.  Then I bent down and felt for some of the packages and finally I made my way to where the manger had been set up.  There I spent most of my time, examining each little figure: Baby Jesus in the arms of Mary and Joseph, the three Wise Men, the shepherds, and the animals.

Ah!  That was a memory of when I was a child and had enough vision to see it all.  Now I can only recall this memory each Christmas and that’s okay for me.  At least I have a memory that I can recall and one that I can cherish forever.
Merry Christmas everyone!

My yellow friend forever: My iPhone and me

She is yellow; but alas!  I cannot see her colour.  She is small and nifty and fits neatly into my purse.  She is an iPhone 5c and she does everything ask of her.

I am not a constant user of my iPhone. I use it to read my news, check into Facebook, and keep up to date with what my hockey team, the Montreal Canadiens, is doing.

I back up my data to iCloud regularly and send off text messages.  In short, I use my iPhone as needed but she is a good little friend.  I have placed a screen protector on her screen and this is a shield that contains dots to help me navigate my screen.

I know that some day, very soon, I'll be trading her in for a more powerful iPhone.  I have had her now for two years and I'll never complain about her.

Great excitement: My yellow cell phone

For anyone who knows me well enough, they will easily tell you that the color yellow has always been my favorite.  So, when I found out that my cell phone was yellow, nothing could have been more pleasing to me.  Except for this!  I never knew that it was yellow until months later after I had bought it.

It sure made me smile because if anyone had asked me to describe my poor old cell phone, I would have been hard put to tell them what color it was. However, my saving grace could have been that my cell phone's screen had dots on it.

Just another funny experience for me.

Daddy, I still remember the butterflies

These memories are still so very fresh in my mind, as if they only happened yesterday and they are ones that will probably always be with me.

The mornings were almost always sunny, with the sun beating down on Daddy and me as we walked hand in hand around our yard. I was just a wee one then and so proud to be walking with my strong but gentle Daddy.

The air was fresh and cool, for the most part, and as we walked Daddy would describe things to me. The almond tree, standing tall and proud, loaded with green leaves and lots of fat juicy almonds. The red roses bowing gracefully on their long stems, and then there they were!

Those tiny butterflies flitting effortlessly around from leaf to leaf and Daddy sneaking up on them.

He would say softly to me that he wanted me to stand very still while he sneaked off to catch a butterfly for me and I did just that. I would stand there waiting and within a minute or so he would be back with his prize.

Daddy would tell me to open my hand and I would. Then he would place the tiny butterfly in the middle of my palm and then with the utmost of gentleness and care he would take the index finger of my other hand and place it gingerly on the butterfly's back.

Oh, how I loved these precious moments with my beloved Daddy. I would stand there for minutes on end with the tiny butterfly in my hand. Daddy would describe the little butterfly to me and, for the most part, it would be a yellow butterfly.

You see, Daddy knew that my favorite color was yellow and I am almost sure that he went out of his way to catch a yellow butterfly just for me.

I would do my best to be as still as possible and I would allow my index finger to rest as gingerly as possible on the butterfly's back, making sure not to squeeze too hard. Then, after a moment, Daddy would tell me to remove my finger so that the butterfly could fly away.

Colors on a wall

This is one of the ways that I use when I want to keep my favorite colors close to me. Now that I no longer have enough vision to see them, I use my imagination and memory to conjure up images of them. This is what I do.

I stand in front of a wall and then I put my imagination to work. I don't necessarily have any order in mind, I simply allow my mind to go to work. It does not take too long before the colors come flooding back to me. Yellow of course is my favorite followed by purple, blue, orange, red, pink, green, and then the rest follow.

Sometimes I may use my sense of smell to help things along. It goes like this: I think of the beach and the fresh fragrance of the sea breeze and yellow comes quickly in to greet me. Then I would probably think of a rainy afternoon with a rainbow sitting high in the sky and purple comes sauntering in. Then I would probably think of a warm summer's day with a sky as clear as anything and blue comes sneaking around the corner.

If I can muster up the scent of roses then red would probably reveal itself and if I could think of sitting on my mom's balcony on a quiet evening then either a pink or orange sunset would suffice and these two colors would come marching in.

It's lots of fun for me and this is how I remember my colors.

Yellow is forever

Ah yes! In my mind, yellow will always be forever. Why yellow? I am not too sure but all I can tell you is that it has always been so for me. From my earliest memories as a child to now, and despite not being able to see anything anymore, yellow still reigns supreme.

It's funny but anytime I go clothes shopping or even shopping for dishes and appliances, yellow is always my preferred color. As I write this, I can see the color yellow right up close in front of me. My favorite childhood cup was yellow. My favorite dress was yellow and one of my favorite jackets and sweaters were both yellow.

Ah yes! My yellow bird was named Gretzky! My most cherished scene is a rising yellow sun, and then again there is the golden yellow sand of my favorite Caribbean beach. Yellow will be forever mine!

The little yellow butterfly

I was just a little girl then, my hand placed firmly in that of my beloved dad. His hand was a strong and confident one as he guided me around our yard and with absolute gentility he would stop to catch a poor unsuspecting little butterfly and as gentle as a kitten, he would place it in the palm of my outstretched hand.

Before doing this, however, Dad would tell me what to expect and what he was going to do. First, he would tell me to stand still and not make a sound. Then he would tell me that he was going to try and catch a little butterfly for me and that he would do his best to catch a yellow one because he knew that yellow was my favorite color. Then, after he had placed it in the palm of my tiny hand, I was to remain as still as a mouse while he described the butterfly to me.

So, as described above, it happened. I stood as still as a mouse while Dad went butterfly hunting. When he captured his intended little victim, he would whisper to me that he had it and that he wanted me to put out my hand, and presto! He was then placing it, oh so gently, into the palm of my hand.

Then Dad and I would stand there with me holding the little yellow butterfly and Dad describing it to me. On most occasions the butterfly did not move. It would lie quietly in the palm of my hand breathing gently and looking around. Dad would describe everything to me; its color, its size, its movements, and he even spiced things up by describing the butterfly's expressions to me. I even believed this last description.

That was so long ago but these tender memories of me, the little yellow butterfly, and my beloved dad shall always be in my memory bank. Thank you, Dad, for having helped to enrich my childhood in such a unique way. These are memories that were formed through your eyes as my sight was not good enough to do the job.

Watching the clothes go around

This used to be one of my favorite pastimes as a child. In those days, Mom had a washer with a glass door to the front. So whenever she put the laundry in, I would find myself drawn to the front door of the washer and there I would sit, watching the clothes spin around in the washer.

I had so much fun then because in those days I thoroughly enjoyed looking at colors. My nose would be pressed right up against the glass door in order to see what was going on. I was always somehow able to identify some of my clothes because they were yellow and I always grew so excited whenever I spotted them as they spun by. For some reason I was then and am still now drawn to the color yellow. Not sure if it had anything to do with my blindness in any way but would never know.

Mom never deprived me of my front seat and maybe, just maybe, she used to watch me have so much fun. I should ask her one of these days. In the meantime, I will hold on to this treasured memory.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan wishing you a terrific day and encouraging you to go out there and share my memories with others. Visit me anytime at www.donnajodhan.com.

My Favorite Colors

For as long as I can remember, yellow has always been my favorite color; as a child when my vision was just a bit, as a teen when I received much more, and even now when I have precious little.  Yellow has always reminded me of happy things and happy times.

When I was a kid, I had to have a yellow cup, a yellow plate, and a yellow saucer and a yellow bowl.  I loved and cherished my yellow Sunday dress, the one that I wore to church.  I adored my yellow jersey, and my yellow bathing suit.  Mom and dad had to always buy me something yellow; the yellow beach ball, the yellow water wings, and everything else yellow.  I even loved the yellow balloon which was something special for me as I had a fear of balloons and when we got our dog and named her Yella, that was the best thing for me since sliced bread.

Yellow continued to dominate my life as I blew past my teen years into adulthood and I continued to buy yellow sweaters and jackets, yellow coats, yellow pants, and yellow dishes and even cutlery with yellow handles.  Part of my living room is even dominated by yellow.

Now that I am left with precious little sight and no longer able to see color, I think of yellow whenever I need a boost or whenever I need to drive away unhappy thoughts or moments.  I have grown to love purple, red, and blue; all distant seconds to my precious yellow.  Yellow!  The color of my life!  The sunshine of my soul!  The light of my darkness!

I'm Donna J. Jodhan your friendly accessibility advocate wishing you a terrific day and urging you to go out there and share my blogs with the rest of the world.
