Forever in my memory bank: Memories of trip 2024

What more can I really say?  Words cannot and will not ever describe everything here! From beginning to end, what a priceless, precious, and never to forget experience.

A river boat cruise always to cherish, and despite Jilla and I suffering from some sort of bug, it all just turned out right.

Great fellow travelers, great tour guides, great ship staff, and yummy and delicious food! Forever grateful! The sites, sounds, smells, and tastes! Never to forget.

A lifetime dream come true! The hot air balloon ride

This was another dream come true for me! I don’t think that I had any expectations, so when it was all over, I sighed!  I thanked God!  And I stored this memory away in my memory bank!

I was never afraid as the balloon rose gracefully into the early morning Lucerne, Switzerland air. The sun shone brightly and the air was so fresh, pure, and cool!

I enjoyed our 2 staff members and cherished Jilla’s running commentary of what she was seeing.  Everything from white, black, and brown cows in the lush fields to people looking up at us and waving. Houses, churches, and other buildings.

The balloon cruised effortlessly at 5 miles per hour, 1,200 feet above ground and traveled for 12 miles!

Oh, what a dream come true for me!  I gazed skywards, prayed with gratitude and hoped that Dad, Granny, and Robs were looking down on me!

My beloved ice skating rink

Ah, yes!  Just to remember those wonderful times when my friends and I went whistling around the rink with cold fresh air blowing through our hair and across our faces.  I can still hear my ice skates rubbing against the ice and see those Christmas lights winking back at me as I skated around!

We laughed, fell and quickly got up, and simply enjoyed skating around at a very leisurely pace.  We chatted as we skated and just enjoyed the ambiance.

We were there for almost an hour and then it was time to take off our skates and to go to a nice restaurant for a delicious meal.  I cannot tell you how many times we did this during the holidays and even now, as I don’t do this any longer, these cherished memories shall be forever in my memory bank!

I'd like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas! Happy holidays! But most of all, a 2023 that will bring us lots of blessings, good things, and hopes and dreams to be fulfilled.
Merry Christmas!

My world forever! My yellow world

My yellow world has been with me for as long as I can remember and now with precious little vision to enjoy my favourite colour, I use my vast memory bank to help me live in my yellow world.

As a kid I had a yellow cup, yellow mug, yellow plate and saucer and everything around me at the meal table was yellow.  I thank my parents and Granny for having entertained my desires.

Then, most of my clothes were yellow: shorts, dresses, pants, shirts, and t shirts.  Skirts, jackets, sweaters, accessories and so much more.

When I grew into adulthood, the yellow desires continued and now as I move along, even my IPHONE and IPAD are yellow.   I am just not sure why my world has always been yellow.

As a child playing on the beach, my spade and bucket were yellow.  My beach ball was yellow and one of our dogs named Yeller was yellow.

Even the logo of my company, and most of the cover art to my audio mysteries are all yellow.  I guess that I must be in great company because the sun is also yellow.

School days! Memories of my primary school

More childhood memories for me to cherish and treasure and to keep alive in my memory bank forever.

Ah, yes, having such fun in our school's playground running up and down the hill and swinging precariously on the jungle gym.  Practicing for sports day.   Swimming in the pool.  Walking around and around the roundabout outside.

Then, the football and cricket and other ball games that we played in the corridors and using the drains to help us play ball.  The drains helped us to keep track of the balls so that we did not lose them. Then there were the swings where we swung as high as we could.  Then the glen where we ran down the hill, picked oranges and grapefruits, and learned about nature.

Such great memories, picking cherries and searching for almonds among the grass. Then we would sit quietly outside on those happy days when our teachers would allow us to explore shapes of birds nests, flowers, and so much more.

Finally, our trips to the rivers where we listened to the flowing water, searched for pebbles and stones, and walked in the shallow part of the river. Memories for a lifetime.

A surprising discovery: Doves with pink legs?

Just imagine my surprise when Mom informed me about this!  We were standing outside the exit of the airport when she suddenly exclaimed, "These doves are so very pretty! They have pink legs!"  This was my surprise as I echoed back, "Pink legs?"  She said yes.

I guess that I probably never had enough vision to see what doves really looked like but when she told me that they had pink legs then I had to stop and think and then to create a new picture in my mind.

Doves with pink legs!  How very new to me and just another picture for me to keep in my already cluttered and over-loaded memory bank.

An interesting experience: Feeling the crow

I had a very interesting experience in the fall of 2017. My friend Gabriella and I took Mom shopping to buy some Christmas decorations and on our way into the store Mom saw an artificial crow and proceeded to introduce me to it.

What an experience. I can tell you that I did not really relish the feeling when I explored this poor crow.

It felt very uncomfortable to my touch, but you know what?  I was sure glad that I got to feel it because I was able to add a new image to my memory bank.  I never really got to see what a crow looked like when I had functional vision so this was great for me.

A great new experience: Exploring the lion

In the summer of 2017, I accompanied Mom downtown to do some banking business and after completing it we walked out to wait for Mom's driver to arrive.  We were standing quietly when Mom decided that she wanted me to explore something quite new: a huge sculpture of a lion which is the main centerpiece of the Royal Bank's logo.

Indeed!  It was quite a new experience for me as I explored this huge sculpture.  I felt its head, touched its mane, and then ran my hands down its vast front and down its legs.  At the end of it all I sure did have a better idea of what a lion looked like.

Just another experience for me to store in my memory bank.

Such sobering memories: Remembering the lagoons

Each lagoon was an individually very special one to me.  Each had its own very special memory because each had something that was different from the other.  Many would say that all lagoons are the same but it was not so for me.

There was the one in Toco, a huge one with water that was always flowing so silently and oh so easily.  We used to build boats out of palm leaves and then float them down the current of the lagoon.  We used to splash around and our dog, Yella, used to join us, barking so happily as she played with us.

I remember that there were fishes living in the lagoon and my brothers would go fishing, often catching a fish or two.  Sometimes we would see crabs running around at the mouth of the lagoon and then we would take time to watch the lagoon empty its water right into the sea.  This lagoon was surrounded by trees that bore luscious sea grapes and almonds.

Then there was the small lagoon in Mayaro.  One that had a bridge across it where I would often sit and listen to my radio and enjoy the fresh sea air. My cousins and brothers would go fishing in it and sometimes have palm leaf boat races but the water was not deep enough for swimming.  Yet the crabs seemed to enjoy playing in it.  This lagoon was right outside of our beach house.  This little lagoon was more open and not many trees surrounded it.

Finally, there was the larger lagoon which was about a quarter mile up the beach from us.  This one was deeper than the other one and there were many fishes in it.  I loved this one because of its peaceful ambiance.  It did not seem to empty its waters into the sea but somehow its waters did flow somewhere.  Coconut trees surrounded it thus making it a very private little getaway.

Those were my lagoons and memories of them shall forever be in my memory bank.

Always in my heart: The Harbour Front skating rink

Oh, yes!  Another treasured memory from my bulging memory bank.  One that I shall always cherish and one that I often recall whenever I have a yearning to go out there and do some ice skating.

This rink was big and spacious.  A rink that sat on the edge of a lake and one where so many people still go to enjoy a wonderful winter skate.

I can still remember the wind blowing lustily through my hair and across my frozen cheeks as I skated around. The ice was always in almost perfect shape and I can still hear the blades of my skates brushing gently against the ice.

I can still hear the Christmas music and see the Christmas lights winking back at me as I skated around and I can still hear the laughter of kids and adults as they whizzed past me on their own skates.

Those were such happy times for me with my dear friends, Jason and Christine. We would often go skating at the Harbour Front rink and then we would eat dinner at a restaurant that served up sumptuous Chinese cuisine.

I have not been back there in so many years but maybe some day I'll return just for that one last ice skate.

Cherished memories: Spring shopping with Mom

The last time Mom and I went spring shopping was in 2012.  In the normal scheme of things we are usually not together at this time of the year, but due to some surgery that I had to have in mid April she was here with me and we made the most of it.

Before we set out I told Mom what I was wishing for, my wish list so to speak, and as always she was very quick to oblige.  Before I knew it, my wish list was a reality but with more than I had asked for.

We went to our favorite stores and had so much fun buying what I had wished for.  Mom really enjoyed describing stuff to me and I had so much fun imagining the colors around me.  Shopping for sandals was also quite a pleasure, trying on and choosing what I wanted.

Ah, yes!  Spring shopping with Mom, another cherished page for my memory bank.

Crunch time: Preparing for a photo shoot

For me, preparing for a photo shoot is somewhat of a different experience. I am not sure if I like or dislike it all, but suffice it to say that it entails my being able to trust the one who is helping me.

In May of 2016 I had to prepare for a photo shoot at Accessible Media Inc and good thing that I had my mom close by to help me do so.  She worked closely with me to ensure that I was wearing the colors that would show up in the photos.  We went shopping beforehand to buy a suitable top.  Then she and I visited the hair salon for a hair cut.

This visit did not go very well as the hair dresser gave me a hair cut that was totally out of character with what she usually gives me. But Mom was there to work things out and to comb my hair on the given day.

Then it was off to the actual day and at the end of it all I was quite pleased.  The day was a beautiful one as we worked outdoors in a lovely park.  Several photos were taken and as the sun shone down upon us it reminded me so much of childhood days spent at lush green parks with my parents, brothers, and cousins.

A great experience for me and one for my good old memory bank.

Remembering the crabs

This is probably another of my favorite childhood memories but in those days I did not have enough vision to clearly see them. So I had to depend on the descriptions of siblings, parents, and other family members.

Yet, for all of this I managed to develop my very own version of a crab and I have to admit that my version was not very close to reality.

I imagined the poor little crabs to be gigantic with huge claws and pincers. I was always afraid of them and one day I was baby sitting one in a paper cup. I stuck my fingers in and it almost had them for its supper.

Then the day came and I was able to see the crabs for real. No, they were not what I had imagined them to be. No, not too cute looking but nowhere as big as I had imagined them to be.

My first opportunity to see what a crab really looked like came on a warm sunny day at the beach and my dad drew my attention to a small red crab crawling along. He allowed me to look at it for a few minutes and then he picked it up and placed it gently in my hand.

He told me to stand very still and stood beside me as the crab crawled around in my hand. Nothing to it, the crab never bit me. It simply crawled around and after some moments I placed him on the sand and he just simply
scurried away.

Another cherished memory for my memory bank.

Remembering the faces

This is a constant challenge and this is what I have to continuously keep remembering. As they say, faces change and the face of a child often changes as they grow into adulthood. So because of this my memories are often way behind when it comes to remembering the faces.

For example; the faces of my nieces and nephews have all changed since I lost my sight in 2004 but in order for me to keep up I need to depend on the memories of their faces at the time I lost my vision, which was in January 2004. And now that I no longer have the vision to see faces I need to depend on those I trust to describe faces to me.

Once I can orient myself to this concept I am fine. It took me quite a while to adjust but today I am just fine. I still use my memories but now I add someone else's descriptions to my memory bank

Remembering the bell balls

I always have so many happy memories each time I allow myself to slip into my memory bank and retrieve those wonderful memories of the times that I spent playing with bell balls. Those were the times that I spent in Primary School playing with my playmates who were also blind.

We played all kinds of ball games using bell balls, balls that were filled with bells to help us find those rolling balls at all times. We played catch and we made up our own games as well. We would stand in a circle and pass the ball from hand to hand and whoever dropped it while the ball was being passed would automatically be out of the game.

We used bell balls to play a sort of goal ball game whereby there were two teams facing off against each other and the object of the game was to roll the ball from team to team and try to get past the line of scrimmage of the opposing team. Each player took turns in rolling the ball and we were not allowed to toss it in the air. Any player doing so would be removed from the game and their team would have to do without that penalized player for the rest of the game. A player could choose to roll the ball to their opposing number or roll it diagonally. It was lots of fun.

Ah yes! Those treasured memories with those wonderful bell balls.

The little yellow butterfly

I was just a little girl then, my hand placed firmly in that of my beloved dad. His hand was a strong and confident one as he guided me around our yard and with absolute gentility he would stop to catch a poor unsuspecting little butterfly and as gentle as a kitten, he would place it in the palm of my outstretched hand.

Before doing this, however, Dad would tell me what to expect and what he was going to do. First, he would tell me to stand still and not make a sound. Then he would tell me that he was going to try and catch a little butterfly for me and that he would do his best to catch a yellow one because he knew that yellow was my favorite color. Then, after he had placed it in the palm of my tiny hand, I was to remain as still as a mouse while he described the butterfly to me.

So, as described above, it happened. I stood as still as a mouse while Dad went butterfly hunting. When he captured his intended little victim, he would whisper to me that he had it and that he wanted me to put out my hand, and presto! He was then placing it, oh so gently, into the palm of my hand.

Then Dad and I would stand there with me holding the little yellow butterfly and Dad describing it to me. On most occasions the butterfly did not move. It would lie quietly in the palm of my hand breathing gently and looking around. Dad would describe everything to me; its color, its size, its movements, and he even spiced things up by describing the butterfly's expressions to me. I even believed this last description.

That was so long ago but these tender memories of me, the little yellow butterfly, and my beloved dad shall always be in my memory bank. Thank you, Dad, for having helped to enrich my childhood in such a unique way. These are memories that were formed through your eyes as my sight was not good enough to do the job.

Memories of a waterfall

Oh, how well-preserved is this memory! It is saved in my memory bank forever. It sits there and can be recalled at a second's notice. I often use this memory to help me relax and recharge, but most of all I use it to help me visualize those huge plumes of white water shooting into the air and then falling backwards into the lake.

I can clearly remember the waterfall at Niagara and others as well. Just sitting there and watching the white water go on its way. I also remember one that I saw in a small lake as I sat there with my friends on a grassy bank on a summer's day.

Water has also fascinated me, from the ocean to the lake and from the lagoon to the river. That huge mass of white water jumping high into the air is no different. Ah yes, my memory of a waterfall forever.

"If you either are or have been a victim of crime, violence, abuse, or bullying, and if you are simply tired of being bombarded with audios and scenes of the above, then I am asking for your support. I have written and recorded audio mysteries that are completely void of vivid descriptions of sex, crime, and violence because I firmly believe that it is time for us to use the spoken word to help influence our kids to start listening to content that is clean and healthy. By doing this we can all do our part to tackle crime in a positive and meaningful way and it only costs pennies per day.Visit my online store at www.donnajodhan.com/store.html.

Bird watching with Dad

Almost everything that I did with my dad was fun, exciting, and interesting and bird watching was no different.

When my vision was not nearly enough to see the birds, dad did my bird watching for me as I sat beside him. He would describe each bird to me as they passed within visual distance and I had so much fun trying to visualize them. I had no trouble entering into a world of my own. A world where dad's calm and gentle voice did the narration; he described everything to me and did not leave out any details. He even added his own sense of dry humor to it all.

Our bird watching usually took place in the public gardens, in the savanna, and on the beach. Then when I was able to see the birds for myself, Dad continued his commentaries but was always happy whenever I could describe what I saw to him. The most memorable moments for me were being able to see the bright colors of the birds and trying to track their flight. Ah yes! Bird watching with Dad will forever remain in my memory bank.

My Memory Bank

Whenever I feel a bit down and am missing the vision that I lost over five years ago, and whenever I am in a mood to wish upon a star, I go to my cherished memory bank and pull out some of my most precious memories.  True to form, the colors are still o so vivid in my mind.  The shapes so real and I can practically reach out and touch.

Photos of my parents, brothers, granny, and dogs are highest on my list.  I can practically reach out and lightly touch their faces.  I can place my hands on their heads and look into their eyes.  Ah!  My stack of precious photos forever preserved in my memory bank.  Next comes those keep sake photos of some of my heroes; Pope John Paul II, Pierre Trudeau, The Kennedy brothers, Bill Clinton, Wayne Gretzky, and others.  I still find it easy to bring their faces into my unfocused eyes and remind myself as to why they are my heroes.

I sit there for some time playing with all of these photos and I amaze myself at how I am still able to keep them so well preserved in my memory bank.  Then I move on to other things; images of my Montreal Canadiens hockey team skating swiftly up the ice.  Ice skating competitions.  The large graceful Air Canada jet bird gliding noiselessly over a deep blue Caribbean ocean with the golden sun streaming down over its silver body.  Next comes my nature memories; a rich blue sky with fluffy white clouds racing each other.  The golden sunrise and the pink sunset.  A purple dawn and green grass sprinkled with dew.  Rows upon rows of bright flowers, my beloved Yellow and orange canaries of so long ago, and a beach filled with yellow sand with lacy white capped waves rolling gently towards the shore.  Huge fat snow flakes clumsily chasing each other around, and silver raindrops falling helplessly downwards.

I linger over all of these for some time and then I finally pull out my very special memories.  Ah!  They too are still in tact.  Candles flickering in a church on Christmas Eve, Christmas lights twinkling in the night, and stores filled with shelves upon shelves of Christmas toys.  The dolls come into plain view followed by the doll houses and the electronic game sets.  Then the huge and handsome Christmas tree all decked off with hundreds of colorful Christmas lights and finally the manger with Baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and the wise men, the angels, and animals.

I can play with all of these memories for as long as I want and when I am tired I place them all carefully back into each of their little compartments and return them to my memory bank.  Then the fat tears of joy come pouring down my cheeks followed by the round ones of sadness.  Ah!  My precious memory bank filled with memories preserved forever and no one can ever take them away from me.
