Hats off to me! A childhood dream realized at last

As a child I aspired to be one and as a teen I carried the torch forward only to stop short when I entered university in Montreal.  I can only say that as a blind/vision-impaired person, the world around me was not ready to give me the chance to become a lawyer at that time.

In those days, most aspiring students at university had to find creative and innovative ways to keep up with class lectures, read texts, and work with professors to study for exams, hand in term papers and so much more.  In short, the term accessibility did not exist and alternate texts were few and far between.

I was always so very sorry that I did not get the chance to become a lawyer in those days but, as they say, nothing before its time. Then came December 14, 2021!

On that memorable evening I received the good news from  my dear friend Sam and then it was time to share with my precious mom.  We both shouted for joy!  We danced around her kitchen and she hugged me so tightly and kissed me!

Oh, boy!  A childhood dream come true finally and I thank God!  To my mom, my family, friends, and professors!  Thank you, thank you!

A stressful time:Preparing for my final exam

This was no different than any other previous exams except that it was the final exam of my law studies and the one that would stand between completion of a long and arduous journey to obtain my dream of a law degree.

For these reasons, this final exam was probably the most important for me and so I took some additional time to prepare.  I listened more carefully to my coach and to my intuition.  I was more meticulous when studying and I took time to rest well and to catch up on my sleep in between periods of studying.

These strategies sure paid off and on the day of the exam I was as ready as I could be.  And there was Sam, walking with me and helping me to be calm and positive!  Yes, my dear friend Sam!  She was my anchor on that day!  Keeping things light and uplifting!

It worked! Thank you Sam!

A smoother experience! June 16 exam is over

Just one more exam for me to sit and with every ounce of luck I will have completed my beloved law degree which I have dreamed of obtaining ever since I was a child.

This particular exam went much more smoothly than the one of October 2020. Sam was with me to help me get set up and to download the exam.  The technical part of the exam to download and upload went without a hitch.

Sam was so very supportive and while I sat in my office writing my exam, Sam sat at my dining room table doing her work.  I took 2 brief breaks to visit her and to visit the washroom.  We chatted for a few minutes each time I came out of my office and mercifully I was done with half hour to spare.

So, this is now behind me.  One more exam to go! I would say that as a blind/vision impaired student, this is not for the faint of heart.  Sighted assistance and support are both necessary.

Time to sweat bullets: Exam time once more

It always seems as if exam time comes a bit too quickly, but truth be told it comes once a year in the springtime. And when it does it always seems as if I am scrambling to be ready.

For the past few years I have been studying for my Law degree from the University of London England and taking my sweet time at doing it.  I have always wanted to become a lawyer but given the present landscape in my personal life, I really do not mind at all.

I will not be seeking to become an Attorney at Law, choosing instead to obtain my Law degree.  I have learned a lot over the last few years and this in itself has helped me to be a much better advocate.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly accessibility advisor, wishing you a terrific day.

Exams at Seneca College

For the past two years I have been writing my law exams at Seneca College and I am happy to report that it is such a joy to be working with Karen Newman and her team.

They are all so very helpful and eager to ensure that exam day is a breeze for me. Before exam day I usually visit Karen and her staff and we spend about half an hour to ensure that everything is in order for the big exams.

We test the access technology software on the desktop computer to ensure that it is working just right. We test it with MS Word and with Notepad to make sure that everything is going to work smoothly.

Then we test out the headphones and finally we make sure that the room is all ready for me. My friend Gabriella comes along for moral support and I am sure glad that she comes.

This is my experience with Seneca and I would not trade it for the world. I thank Karen Newman and her team for all of their help.

This is a personal message from author Donna Jodhan
"Each time we raise our voice at someone else we are engaging in bullying! Each time we raise our hands to slap or punch someone else we are also engaging in bullying and each time we engage in actions to either manipulate or force someone else to do what we want we are also engaging in bullying!

There is no room in this world for bullying and each day we fail to take action against bullying it is another day that we allow others to bully us and our kids. Our heroes and role models are the ones who have made us proud; those brave young men and women who gave their lives for us in past wars and those who continue to do so. They are not the ones who choose to be racists and those who believe that their bad behaviour in public is acceptable.

I write and record audio mysteries that are being used at such events as murder mystery evenings as well as at public awareness and team building events. I promote understanding, tolerance, and problem solving and my audio mysteries continue to be broadcasted around the world and you can listen to them anywhere! On the plane or train! In the car or right there in your home! On your i device or computer!

Please join my campaign against bullying (CAB) by supporting my efforts to keep on writing and recording!
If you truly care then you will certainly dare!"

Those troublesome track changes and comments

This is one challenge that I am constantly having to deal with: when anyone sends me documents with changes and track changes. Some access technology may be better able to read it than others but no matter what, it is extremely painful for me.

Sometimes I miss out on finding the comments and track changes and at other times I am fine with it. It all depends on which access technology or screen reading technology I am using. I am not going to mention specific names of screen reading technology here but suffice it to say that some pieces of software are better than others.

I am not sure if there is any other way to deal with these, short of coming up with some sort of editor to do it. Maybe I am dreaming but this is the way that the rest of the world is going so I have to find a way to deal with this.
This has become more important for me now as I move forward with my law studies. Especially so when my professors send me their comments and track changes in Word documents. Wish me luck.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly accessibility advocate, wishing you a terrific day and inviting you to go out there and tell others about my challenge with track changes and comments in Word documents.
