Happy to be back: Back to school

In January 2021 I returned to my law studies at the University of London, England after a wee break.  Things are different now when it comes to how the University is going to allow and enable us to write our exams.

My next exam is in June 2021 and instead of traveling to the Seneca Testing Centre to write my exam, I'll now be able to write it from the comfort of my home.  However, I'll need and require my friend Sam to come to my home to ensure that I can download my exam questions and to upload the completed exam paper.

It may sound straightforward but last October there was no audio or captioning for the instructional video and poor Sam had to read it all to me.  In addition, the page for downloading and uploading the exam presented challenges to us.

As a vision-impaired student, these are the things that really make me nervous: if there is no one around to assist me and I can only hope and pray that things improve in this area for my June exam.

The changing landscape: My October law exam

Boy, oh boy, and what a difference it was for this exam! Due to the pandemic, everything changed for our online exams at the University of London and now my friend Sam had to come to my home to be the invigilator.

Sam came early and together we made very sure that everything was ready to go, but as they say: something had to go wrong.

It came when Sam attempted to access the instructional video and guess what? There was no audio and no captioning so those of us with either an audio or hearing disability were out of luck.

This was quite disappointing, that the University of London failed to create an accessible video, and Sam and I certainly made our unhappiness and disappointment known to the university. This should not be happening in these modern times when accessibility is being promoted more vigorously.

Time to sweat bullets: Exam time once more

It always seems as if exam time comes a bit too quickly, but truth be told it comes once a year in the springtime. And when it does it always seems as if I am scrambling to be ready.

For the past few years I have been studying for my Law degree from the University of London England and taking my sweet time at doing it.  I have always wanted to become a lawyer but given the present landscape in my personal life, I really do not mind at all.

I will not be seeking to become an Attorney at Law, choosing instead to obtain my Law degree.  I have learned a lot over the last few years and this in itself has helped me to be a much better advocate.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly accessibility advisor, wishing you a terrific day.

Kudos to the University of London England

In 2012 I embarked on an adventure of great personal importance. I started a three-year journey to becoming a lawyer and I chose to do it at the University of London England's distance learning school. So far so good. I have not been disappointed with the accessibility of materials and the assistance and support that I have been receiving at the U of London England's school.

In addition to this, I have been receiving great assistance from others but what impresses me most about the U of London England is their willingness and readiness to accommodate my needs as a blind student. When it comes to alternate formats they really get it and understand it. They seem to know my needs before I even identify them. They know how to handle my needs at exam time and there is a definite process in place to handle the most important challenges.

Everything is in place. Step by step is the name of the game and there is a time for everything. I am not disappointed and I am proud to be a part of the U of London England's student population.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan your friendly accessibility advocate wishing you a terrific day and urging you to go out there and learn more about the world of blind persons by visiting www.rnib.org.

This is a personal message from author Donna Jodhan
"If you either are or have been a victim of crime, violence, abuse, or bullying, and if you are simply tired of being bombarded with audios and scenes of the above, then I am asking for your support. I have written and recorded audio mysteries that are completely void of vivid descriptions of sex, crime, and violence because I firmly believe that it is time for us to use the spoken word to help influence our kids to start listening to content that is clean and healthy. By doing this we can all do our part to tackle crime in a positive and meaningful way and it only costs pennies per day.Visit my online store at www.donnajodhan.com/store.html.
I thank you and your kids will also thank you!"

The University of London, England experience

For me, if I am getting ready to pursue any type of distance learning program, I take quite a bit of time to choose the distance learning school that best suits my needs and there is one very important factor that is a must for me. That is, to ensure that the distance learning program in question is accessible. In short, that I can have easy access to the program's website, the web content, the texts, and anything else that is in electronic format.

This is why I chose the University of London, England, to pursue my present Law Degree. Not only did they provide all of this, but their staff is tops! They surely get it when it comes to providing materials in accessible format and no questions asked. Even when I had some difficulties setting up the processes for taking exams here in Canada. The goodly staff at the U of London was right there to help sort out the challenges and put a good light on things for me. So a huge bouquet of thanks to the U of London's special needs office and their staff.
