Wonderful! Birthday lunch with Gaby!

It is always so very refreshing and pleasant whenever we get together. Gaby is very entertaining and, in short, my eyes whenever we go out.

On this day she treated me to a wonderful birthday lunch.  We ate, chatted, laughed and reflected on so many other things.

The meal was yummy and delicious and Gaby even told the waiter that it was my birthday. So she brought a tasty slice of cake for us both along with a candle.

Lucky me! Another milestone birthday

I won’t share with you why this one was a milestone birthday for 2024, but suffice it to say that without Mom with me it was very difficult for me.

Yes, the friends and well-wishers filled my day but when my Miracle Mom is not there to be with me it sure feels very unhappy for me. Nevertheless, I did my best.  I treated myself to some favorite things and spent time reflecting.

I am just so humbled and privileged that I have lived to celebrate another birthday. Happy birthday to me!

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly award winning sight-loss coach and accessibility advisor, wishing you a terrific day.

Just another day: Birthday 2022

I do not think that I will ever see a better birthday than this one.  Granted, Mom was not here to share and celebrate with me but I know that she was here in spirit.

I received several wondrous gifts, as I call them.  First, a few months ago when I got news that I had completed my law degree and that I could now look forward to my graduation ceremony in England in July.

Next, my upcoming trip to Portugal and then finally, traveling to Normandy with Jilla after my graduation.

Birthday 2022 was celebrated just as I wanted it.  Quiet, simple, and not much going on.  The perfect day for me!  Phone calls from Mom, Jeff and Gayle, Maura, Ruthie, and the many emails.

A precious day: Gubby and me Aug 18, 2021

This was a wonderful day for me as my dear friend Gubby and I celebrated a late special birthday for her.  The day was simply made for us as we walked along the board walk enjoying the warm sun, the fresh cool air blowing in from the lake and listening to and watching the kids play in the shallows of the lake.

We spent about an hour outside before entering the restaurant to enjoy a wonderful birthday meal for my friend.  The day was made even more special because of the yummy food, great customer service and warm and wonderful conversation between Gubby and me.

Days like these are so rare and special and ones to remember for a lifetime.

No Mom to share with me: Birthday time 2021

Birthday time 2021 came and went quietly, just like several previous birthdays.  No Mom to share and celebrate with me!  No Gabriella to laugh and smile and laugh with me over a yummy meal!  However, there was my dear neighbour Sandra to the rescue!

We enjoyed a lovely meal, great conversation, and Whitney Huston's songs playing softly in the background.  I enjoyed a wonderful lunch with my good friend Pearl at her kitchen table followed by me playing her baby grand with Pearl and her puppy, Bella, as my audience.

A lovely day despite the Covid lock down!  Here's to more happy returns of the day!

A different way to celebrate: The virtual birthday party

Covid-19 has certainly forced us to do some very interesting things and this includes me.

A few months ago Mom celebrated a birthday but for this occasion and due to Covid-19 I could not be with her to celebrate. So, my 2 friends Gabriella and Sandra came up with a substitute celebration.

I bought a cake and Sandra drove me to Gabriella's house where she had set up chairs and tables in her backyard. We had dinner and toasted Mom, ate cake in her honour, and then Sandra took photos with her iPhone.

Gabriella had turned on her fireside and all of this sure helped to create a birthday celebration. Then, to finish things off, Sandra sent me the photos and I sent them to my sister-in-law Gayle and she showed them to Mom. The process was completed when I printed the photos and then sent them to Mom in her monthly FedEx box.

A memory forever! Blowing out the candles

What a wonderful memory for me to cherish! Birthday tea with my dear friend Gabriella!  Lots to eat, lots to savour, and so much to smile about and to be grateful for! Then, to blow out the candles!

Gabriella is probably one of the most thoughtful persons in my life! She is always there to share in my moments of triumph and she is always there to advise, suggest, and guide me!

My birthday celebration with her in May 2019 is one that I shall always remember! Thank you, my good friend!

My best friends forever! Birthday celebrations with the girls

I shall always remember my birthday on May 26, 2019! A cozy little party for me; with Char, Chris, Dar, and Heather all gathered around a dining table loaded with Chinese food!

Everyone ate with gusto and the punch was simply heavenly. Then the girls brought out the cake and I blew out the candles. Then, the gift to remember! A lovely Montreal Canadiens hockey bear cradling a throw cover in his arms!

How very thoughtful of these girls! My friends of so many years! Honest, cheerful, and always there for me!

Thank you, ladies! A memory forever! You will always be in my heart and in my mind!

This shall linger forever in my mind: Mom's special birthday

It was so very special for Mom and it was a time when I got to enjoy the celebration with everyone describing everything to me. On a previous special birthday I had enough functional vision to see what was going on, but not this time.

That did not hinder my enjoyment. I used my imagination to picture the entire birthday dinner. We took Mom to a lovely upscale restaurant and Martha took pictures with her iPhone.

I could tell that Mom ate with much gusto and really enjoyed herself.  She received flowers from the family and as I stood by while she received them at home, I pictured my mom with one of the biggest smiles on her face!

Thanks to my imagination and having had functional vision previously, I can still follow along and enjoy.

A cherished memory: Auntie's birthday party

In August 2017 my family celebrated the 80th birthday of one of my aunts and it was one where I had to depend exclusively on my hearing to help me enjoy it all.  Now that I no longer have the vision to see around me, I need to depend on others to tell me what's going on if I am unable to hear what is going on.

The day was very special for me as I got to sit next to Auntie and chatted with her as she enjoyed the celebration.  It was quite a noisy occasion as everyone wanted to get caught up and the crowning moment was when Auntie asked little 4-year-old Mateo to stick the cake with her.

As Mom later described to me, Mateo did very well and acted like a perfect little gentleman!

Using my imagination: Imagining the Queen's birthday celebrations

Now that I no longer have sight to be able to see a TV screen, I leave it all up to my imagination to do its thing for me. Or, whenever my mom is around to describe things to me, I use her descriptions to help bolster my imagination.

This is exactly what happened when the Queen's 90th birthday was shown on TV in 2016.  Mom described and I used it all to help me imagine.

I could see so much through my mind's eye: the parades, the crowds, the horses and carriages, and finally the Royal Family on the balcony.

I can tell you that I am still able to have lots of fun doing this.  My imagination simply runs away like an unstoppable freight train.  I can imagine so much and I will bet anything that what I imagine is probably much better than reality.

Great memories: Birthday time

I am one of those who deliberately chooses not to make a fuss about my birthday.  I just wish that this special day of mine would end as quickly as it begins.

However, there are those who do not allow me to forget it so easily.  Mom is the leader followed by my twin brother, Jeffrey, my sisters-in-law, nephews and nieces, and those special friends.

Mom leads the charge with her customary flowers and now that I am no longer able to see what they look like, I still take delight in gently touching them and smelling their wonderful fragrances.

Then, my good friend Gabriella takes me out for a sumptuous lunch and for this year she and I went to a great restaurant in Unionville called La Grotta.  The waiter, Frank, was extremely attentive to us, taking additional care to ensure that mine was an extra special lunch.

Then the rest of the day went by uneventfully with no incidents except the phone calls.  I will tell you honestly, when I had limited vision until I received a whack of sight and now with precious little, my birthdays are all the same for me.  Celebrating privately with special ones and treasuring the memories that come with them.

Learning to look after the orchid

I have always loved plants and flowers and one of the presents that I received for my birthday in 2015 was a beautiful orchid. Of course, it was described to me and after everyone had gone home and the night had arrived, I tiptoed up to my new friend and took a few minutes to get familiar with her.

My new orchid had two flowers on it and some thick leaves. It was tall and a bit slender but I particularly loved the small flowers. Before my friend, Gabriella, had left that day she gave me a quick lesson on how to look after my orchid. She told me to place two ice cubes in its pot. One on each side of the pot and to do it once weekly.

My beautiful orchid is very well and alive today. I tiptoe up to her pot every day and I run my fingers gently along her leaves. I know what orchids look like because of my former vision so I can use my memory to help me along.

The Japanese lunch

In May 2015 my friend Gabriella took me for my birthday lunch and this time around it was a sumptuous Japanese lunch. On this day, however, Gabriella made sure that I had a full blown description of my surroundings.

Gabriella is one of the few persons who really takes the time to describe things to me. My mom is another and I was not sorry after listening to Gabriella's descriptions.

She paid particular attention to two men who were enjoying a large boat of sushi. She told me that the boat was about two feet long and six inches wide and that it was loaded with all kinds of sushi pieces and as Gabriella described my surroundings to me I ate happily and envisioned everything that she was describing to me.

I particularly enjoyed her description of the large boat. I could practically see the sushi pieces dancing invitingly in front of my sightless eyes and I could envision the two men enjoying their delicious meal.

At the end of our lunch I can tell you that I was one of the happiest persons on earth for that day. Great food! Great company, and one of my best friends describing everything to me!

Memories of happy birthdays

So many happy birthdays for me to remember. Especially so for the ones when my vision was good enough for me to see such things as the cake, candles, and all kinds of presents from my mom and dad, brothers, granny, and friends.

The beautiful flowers from my dear friend Debra. The surprises all wrapped in bright paper from my parents when I was a child, and then that special one from my beloved granny.

Those cards with the beautiful pictures from my aunts Norma and Margaret and Uncle Harold. The beautiful cards with lovely pictures and images from Debra and Gabriella, and on and on and on!

Now that I am no longer able to see those cards, flowers, and cake, I depend heavily on my imagination to help me out and I must say that it does, indeed, do a very fine job.

This is a personal message from author Donna Jodhan
"Each time we raise our voice at someone else we are engaging in bullying! Each time we raise our hands to slap or punch someone else we are also engaging in bullying and each time we engage in actions to either manipulate or force someone else to do what we want we are also engaging in bullying!

There is no room in this world for bullying and each day we fail to take action against bullying it is another day that we allow others to bully us and our kids. Our heroes and role models are the ones who have made us proud; those brave young men and women who gave their lives for us in past wars and those who continue to do so. They are not the ones who choose to be racists and those who believe that their bad behaviour in public is acceptable.

I write and record audio mysteries that are being used at such events as murder mystery evenings as well as at public awareness and team building events. I promote understanding, tolerance, and problem solving and my audio mysteries continue to be broadcasted around the world and you can listen to them anywhere! On the plane or train! In the car or right there in your home! On your i device or computer!

Please join my campaign against bullying (CAB) by supporting my efforts to keep on writing and recording!
If you truly care then you will certainly dare!"
