Just making sure: Arranging my meal on the dining counter

This continues to be a very interesting experience each time I visit Mom. Her care givers serve me my meals on the dining counter. Each care giver does it differently.

Three of them tell me each time my meal is served but they each lay out the meal differently.
The fourth one never tells me when she serves it.

The main thing for me to do, before I start eating, is to make sure where everything is. That way I don’t have any unnecessary accidents.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly award winning sight-loss coach and accessibility advisor, wishing you a terrific day.

Thank goodness for friends: When part of my meal spilled off of my plate

It is one thing to ensure that my meal remains on my plate but it is quite another to discover when part of it has fallen off the edge of my plate.  Good thing that this happened at home when I was having my dinner one day.

How did I discover that this had happened?  When I checked the edge of my plate and realized that my food had indeed done so.   Good thing that this happened at home and not at a restaurant.

Not sure how to avoid having this happen again.  I guess that I need to be more careful and vigilant.

All my pleasure: Setting table for two

I think that I have come to be a bit of a pro when it comes to setting table for two.  For this is what I have been doing ever since the pandemic descended upon us all.

Each month I set table for two and then my good neighbour, Sandra, comes over to have either dinner or evening tea with me.  I take my time doing this; first getting out the table mats and placing them in front of the chairs on my dining table.

Next I place the glasses, cutlery, and plates on the table mats.  Finally, I arrange the tea cups and their saucers on the counter in my kitchen if they are needed.

As a short cut I use mugs so no saucers are needed.  I also place napkins carefully beside the plates on the table.

I have everything down to a science, as they say.  Careful as I go and methodical to go along.  My mission is to ensure that I do things just right and not break anything.

The final thing is to arrange cookies and cake on the plates and put nuts into a tiny dish beside the plates.

All in a day's preparation.

How I long! Thoughts of a visit

It is the best that I can do while I wait to receive the two Covid vaccines; dream and have thoughts of a longed-for visit to see Mom.

Dreaming is not that bad, after all, and I believe that if one dreams hard enough it will eventually materialize.

I dream of arriving on a bright sunny day and Mom will be there to greet me at the airport along with Ramlall.  The birds will be singing sweetly and the air will be fresh and pure and the sun will be so warm and welcoming.

We will drive to Mom's home and along the way Ramlall will entertain Mom and me with all kinds of stories.  Then we will arrive at her home and after the suitcases are brought into the house I will proceed to change into my relaxing clothes and then settle down to a hearty breakfast that Mom has prepared for me before coming to the airport.

We will eat together and she will bring me up to date on so many things. Before this I will have unpacked her goodies and put them out on the counter.  She will be so happy to get everything.

Then, after breakfast, I'll crash into my bed and sleep for a few hours. Lunch will be another sumptuous meal followed by more time to sleep.  Later in the afternoon I'll unpack my computer, set it up, and then Mom and I will have a nice leisurely dinner.

This will be my first day and I cannot wait!

A learning experience: A different way to celebrate Christmas

I sincerely hope that Christmas 2020 will not be a repeat.  For whereas I am truly thankful that I was able to celebrate with enough to eat and drink and more than enough to share with others, it was different because I did not have Mom around to spend time with.

There was no going to church for 2020 but I watched Mass on TV.  There was no Christmas meal with Mom so I ate alone and made the best of my blessings. There was no traditional greetings to exchange with our workers but I sure thought of them all.

That was Christmas 2020 and here's to better times for 2021!

Always a pleasure: A visit with Char's cat, Henry

I will be the first to admit that I am not really a cat person and now that I have precious little vision I have become very wary of them.

No, I do not mind playing with them but when it comes to having them in my bed the answer is a firm no.

Whenever I visit my best friend, Char, in Montreal I am always delighted and happy to see her cat, Henry.  He is quite friendly towards me.  He climbs onto my chair and proceeds to squeeze in beside me on the chair.  There he lies purring happily and he allows me to pet him and talk to him.

Then, whenever we have our meals in the kitchen he climbs onto the kitchen table and starts to inspect everything.  I think that he feels that this particular table is his and that he is only doing me a favor by letting me share it with him or should I say he allows me to share it with him.

Whatever it is, Henry is a really enjoyable cat to be around.  He is so attached to Char and is always seeking her attention.  He is constantly talking to her in his own way and simply loves his food but Char needs to give it to him in small amounts so as to avoid accidents.

Precious memories: Mom and I in St. Lucia

Mom and I have been making it our annual holiday since 2011 and this is an event that I really look forward to every year. Yes!  It's girls' time and we head off to sweet St. Lucia every year to simply relax and have some down time.

It is always so interesting to me whenever we go down for our meals.  These are always buffet style meals and, as always, Mom is my main helper. But the staff has grown so used to us now that they automatically help us out at meal time.

Everyone is just so helpful and oh so cool.  They chat and laugh with us. They bring us whatever we want and they know exactly how to help me out as a blind person.

Then there is the always to remember beach with the sand and surf in limitless abundance.  Nights are very special to me as it is the time when I get to be in touch with my imagination, my self, and my thoughts.

Mornings and evenings on our balcony are so relaxing and so memorable.  Just listening to the sound of the waves as they break gently on the sandy shore, the singing birds and the chirping crickets.

Ah, yes! Sweet St. Lucia!

My Plate Is Like a Clock

Did you know that when teaching blind kids how to find their food on their plate, or teaching newly blinded adults how to do the same, the clock concept is used? What exactly is the clock concept? I'll tell you.

The plate is presented like a clock so that when blind persons are being taught how to find their food on their plate, things are described as follows: Meat is at 12 o'clock. Beans are at 3 o'clock. Potatoes are at 6 o'clock, and so on.
This concept is often used to describe to a blind person where they can locate their glass or cup. It works perfectly for me as I have been using it all my life.

I know that much of society often wonders how a blind person goes about eating their meals let alone being able to find food on their plate but this is how it's done. I also know that many people are concerned about being seen eating with a blind person because they think that they may be embarrassed. Not at all. I am sometimes asked how can a blind person find their mouths with their fork or spoon and my response is: One does not have to see in order to find their mouths. You'd be surprised to know how many persons with sight have difficulty eating with good table manners.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your accessibility and special-needs business consultant, wishing you a terrific day and encouraging you to go out there and educate the rest of the world about how blind persons eat their meals at table. Visit www.afb.org or www.rnib.org to learn more.
