Poor twin island nation: Uncertainty in Trinidad

So very unfortunate but whenever the United States sneezes, many others develop a serious cough. Unfortunately the present big cheese of the United States is using his sneezes to contaminate the rest of the world.

Thanks to his battle with Venezuela, Trinidad stands with hands in the air. Not much for this tiny twin island nation to do or can do! This little island is helpless; just holding its breath and praying that the swift currents will not sweep it away into infinity!

Peace in peril: Trouble in the Caribbean ocean

This part of the world is usually a very peaceful one. No big activity, no quarrels. No, not much!

But here we see that a well known bully sends his country’s Navy to stir up trouble in the Caribbean Ocean, and why? Definitely not for what he is claiming, but a factor which he thinks the world is unable to see or decipher.

Unfortunately, there is not much that anyone can do because this bully is the most powerful man in the world. He knows it and he continues to use his position to bully so many countries! There must be a way to stop such persons like him!

Great times: New Year lunch with the family

So many of us do not have the privilege or pleasure to celebrate a New Year’s lunch with their family, and why? Maybe no family to celebrate with for various reasons?

I have a small family but it is enough for me. We get together and we enjoy a good meal, good banter, and good times. The important thing for me is that family is around me.

Not easy, Care givers

When care givers are either late or bow out of work at the last minute, it can make things hard. In general, this is always going to be a challenge for patients to deal with. So far, Mom has been really good at dealing with these challenges but she does become anxious when they occur.

A care giver’s job is not an easy one and I admire anyone who decides to choose this career. I admire their dedication, commitment, and patience.  However, there are times when either bowing out of work at the last minute or showing up late without giving a reason may be questionable. Just more challenges to work with.

The routine: Injections with Moya

This has become part of the ritual whenever I visit Mom. I need someone to help me take my biweekly injection. Moya has kindly agreed to help me and we have developed a routine.

First I take the injection, that is in a pen, out of the fridge a few hours before the time that we have agreed upon. Then I put an ice pack on the spot where the injection is going to be about 20 minutes before the time. Moya comes along and gives me the injection.

All done! Then I spend the rest of the day taking things easy.

Fun times: Cooking at Christmas 2025

These memories with Mom, especially at Christmas, are oh so precious and keepers forever.

Mom tells me what she would like to cook for the day. We set out across the kitchen together. I walk ahead of her as she comes along with her walker.

I bring out the ingredients and the mixing bowls and pots and pans. If I cannot remember where to find things she directs me.

I set up everything for her and then I bring the high chair for her. Slowly and surely she gets to work. She is so very meticulous and methodical.

We chat as we work but her concentration is complete. Rest assured that at the end of it all her cooking skills remain unblemished.

She has remembered how to make her favourite dishes. Cooking and baking are both still in her DNA!

My new way: The pointing strategy

It took me a bit of time to discover this strategy but I think that it is working. In order to compensate for Mom’s hearing loss, whenever we are chatting and if I believe that she may not fully hear me, I point to things and oh boy!  She is so good at understanding and responding.

So for example, if I wish her to chat about something on the TV as I am relaxing close by, I point to the TV and she knows how to respond.

If I wish her to give me feedback on my top, I stand in front of her and point to my top. She almost immediately gets it.

Then, if I walk towards her and point to my shoes and slacks, she immediately knows that I am seeking her opinion as to whether shoes and slacks match.

Then, if she sees me trying to find something on her counter, I point to the counter and place my hands on the surface of the counter. She quickly realizes what I am trying to say and she responds.

Or, if I walk towards her to ask how my hair looks after I have washed and dried it, I point with my hair brush to my head and she is on it. This is my pointing strategy. This is my brilliant Mom!

Wonderful time of the year: Christmas sounds and smells

My memory captures Christmas of 2025 when Mom’s house was filled with such wonderful sounds and smells. Mom was in the middle of it all; helping to create such familiar smells and sounds.

Pots and pans clanged and bustling about helped to enhance those super sounds. There is nothing like being able to create Christmas sounds and smells.

And how about the sound of chopping onions, garlic, and other stuff for seasoning! Then the combined smells of all of these components. Then the smell of Mom’s cooking and oh so much more!

The crash! The broken vase

I heard it and then all hell broke loose! Not sure what really happened here! The sound came from Mom’s living room.

Did the wind blow it off the table? Or did the care giver knock it over? Whatever it was, it broke.

It fell to the floor with a loud crash.  Mom took it all in good spirits. All in a day’s happenings.

Nothing new! Updating my travel computer

Oh boy, and if I did not do this then there would probably be hell to pay. With technology sometimes playing dirty tricks on me, it is so very important for me to ensure that I have carried out all of my checks on my travel computer before I travel. I never take anything for granted.

My travel computer has always been there for me, working like a charm and I refer to her as old reliable! She is not a young lady, so to speak, and I’ll take every opportunity to have her around as long as she works.

Careful as she goes! Navigating around the boiling kettle

This is probably one of the more intricate challenges for me on a daily basis. My kettle sits on my counter and every day I make very sure to position it in such a way that when the water is boiling the heat from the kettle is aimed towards my kitchen sink. In addition, I carefully place my kettle close to the sink.

Then I go to great pains to continue my daily task ensuring that I am at all times not getting in the way of the steam coming forth from my kettle. I have grown used to this daily task and for the most part I am safe.

However, I always need to keep these variables in my mind. Whenever the kettle is boiling, then the kettle rules, so to speak!

Almost too late: Visiting Aunty

I really do not know the last time that I saw Aunty but this visit was very memorable and special for Mom and me. I will note here that Aunty passed on February 01, 2026.

Call it a premonition or a nudge from intuition but Mom had been asking for us to visit Aunty for a while. Aunty seemed so happy to see us and the next day she called Mom and told her so.

We chatted, laughed, and Stephen provided a lovely lunch of delicious Chinese cuisine. Then it was time to leave and a small part of me felt that I would not see her again. I held her hand and hugged her close.

Then we were on our way.

All done! Fixing Mom's clock

I finally decided to get off my chair and fix Mom’s clock. Rather, to adjust it so that the chimes matched the time.

It did not really take too much for me to do this. I should have done it a long time ago and I can only put it all down to being a bit too lazy.

Too often I tend to procrastinate, which I must correct. I am usually very punctual with my commitments.

Combining it all: Fixing Mom's angel

I need to make sure that I get the entire picture before I embark on these types of tasks. Fixing stuff for Mom is normally routine but every now and then I need to concentrate a bit more.

Especially so when I need to combine my fixing skills along with reference points to visual cues. Most of the time this works but sometimes I need to go a bit further. I needed to bring her angel back to Toronto for Imad to take a look at it.

At the end and good news, the angel did not need fixing.

Happy times: Turning on Mom's Christmas tree

This is one event that almost always bring a smile to me. Whenever Mom asks me to turn on her Christmas tree, I tell her to wait and watch as I do this.

As a vision-impaired person, I would probably never know if the lights are on when I turn the switch. Someone would need to let me know.

So, If I turn the switch and Mom tells me that there is no light, I first check to see if the tree is plugged in and then if it is I try the switch again because I may not have pressed the switch hard enough.

A bit of humour: The missing underwear

At the very best of times, I almost always go into a panic whenever I am missing anything while packing for a trip. This is what happened some time ago when I was packing to return home.

I could not find my precious underwear.  So, before I panicked, I decided to take a step by step approach as to where I had first put them and where they could be at this moment.

I was not sure that this approach would work, but presto! It worked but it took me a bit of time to trace my underwear’s root.

As a vision-impaired person, I truly believe that it is important to always be able to find what I am looking for.

Using a new strategy: Finding the correct light switch

Now I need to find a new way to find the correct light switch.  Because I can no longer see when lights are turned on or off, I have had to develop ways to know which switch is the correct one.

This comes when Mom asks me to either turn on or off a light. Through care, logic and memory, I have developed a way to do this. It takes patience and effort. It takes some thinking and some figuring out. It takes trial and error.

But, at the end of the day I think that I have mastered it.

Thank God for Moya: When the slippers disintegrated

Oh my, and what a royal catastrophe!  It could not have happened in a worse place. Oh, yes!  The supermarket and thank goodness that Moya was there to help save the day.

The poor slippers did not waste time dying on me. First, the heels went.  Next came the soles and then finally the top left the bottom.

Some folks noticed a trail of black stuff being left on the floor of the supermarket but could not quite figure what it was. I kept a somber expression while Moya tried to smile as if nothing was going on. Mom, for her part, knew it all but pretended not to look.

Finally, both sides of my slipper went altogether and I was forced to seek help. Moya fetched me a pair of rubber slippers from a nearby shelf and I spent the rest of my time simply walking gingerly along.

Exhausting times: Getting ready again

Sometimes I feel like a bouncing ball, just bouncing along the road from one destination to the next. I am hardly finished with one trip and then it’s off to the next one.

Got to slow down but how do I do this? I enjoy traveling to some extent but I am just so very tired at times when I am required to deal with airports. From curbside to check in and then to the security checkpoint, to the boarding gate, and finally to the aircraft.

Got to slow down!

Better organisation: Making room in my freezer

I must say that I have definitely learned how to pack my freezer in a better way. Mom has also taught me so much when it comes to making room in my freezer.

There is no hard and fast trick to it all; just to use common sense and logic. Easier said than done?

Probably, but with a bit of practice it only gets easier.

Something new: My new fridge containers

Thanks to my best friend Char, I went shopping with Stephie on Amazon and using Char’s info I purchased a set of containers with basket inserts.

They work but the smallest and second smallest best suit my fridge.  The other 2 are large and take up room. The basket inserts help to keep fruits and veggies fresh for a longer period of time.

There has been so many innovations over the years that I need to make sure that I do not go overboard when purchasing unnecessary things.

No getting around this! Travel computer headaches

I must say that my travel computer has really been a gem when it comes to behaving, and what do I mean by this? Well, it all has to do with her not causing too many headaches for me.

But when she decides to cause a headache?  It means that I need to be patient, stick with solving the problem, and to not give up too quickly.

The most recent headache was when I visited Mom in late 2025 and for some reason my Dropbox folders kept being updated on my hard drive. Enter Tevin the super technician and after a bit of a challenge, Tevin had it all fixed for me.

The travel computer resumed purring like a kitten.

Patience, patience! Finding the missing mesh bag

These precious mesh bags sure help me when I travel. I use them to help me organize my clothes and I must say that they sure work.

I am always so very careful when I bring them out to pack my clothes. I make sure that I have them all laid out on my bed and I count to make sure that they are all there.

So, the other day when I found that I was missing one, I had to stop and retrace my steps. I find that this is the best way for me to find anything when I misplace something and sure enough and one more time it worked.

My missing mesh bag was lying on my sofa in my room.

A funny moment: The wrong dinner dish

Sometimes I find myself experiencing a bit of a different episode but I guess that, as they say, this is what makes life interesting and keeps me on my toes. Ordering the wrong dinner dish rarely happens in my case but this time it sure did.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed my wrong dinner dish. I guess that I was just too tired to really pay attention. Some folks may have sent it back but I decided to keep it and enjoy it.

I never told anyone, and why? Because I guess that it was not important enough for me.

A very different experienc: Dancing with the shower heads

This is exactly what took place when I stayed at a hotel in Montreal in late 2025. Yes, everything else in the hotel room was fine, but when it came to adjusting the shower heads? For me, and with very little sight to guide me, it turned into a sort of dance show.

I must have spent about 10 minutes trying to find the correct adjustment, but patience prevailed. I ended up splashing water all over my hair.

I found it a challenge to adjust the height and to obtain the most suitable level of hot water. It was difficult to control the water from the overhead shower head. But at the end of it all, it all worked out.

My best friends forever: Seeing Char and others again

I am always so filled with joy, gladness, and lots of love each time I visit with my best friend Char along with Chris and Dar. We go back such a very long way to when I first met them when I moved to Montreal.

Over the years, we have all managed to keep in touch. Char is simply the best.  She is what a best friend represents. Chris and Dar are so close to me and all three are never out of my mind. I thank God for them.

Earth angels forever! Visit with Cathie and Chris

Cathie rescued me when I reached out to her for help in dealing with my stress and mental meltdown, and Chris came along.

I met Cathie so many years ago when I was hospitalized in Montreal for an accident. We had lost contact for quite some time but when I called she came with no questions asked.  She selflessly gave of her time and advice.

This was a wonderful visit. We chatted, laughed and reflected, played with the dogs, and of course! Chris was there to add spice and sparkle to my visit.

I thank these two wonderful people for being in my life.

He is definitely one of the nicest doctors that I have ever met and engaged with. Next to Dr. Dani Manis, my family physician, Dr. Scott Walsh is right up there.

He is so very pleasant.  Kind, gentle, and engages directly with me. He always fills my visit with lots of humor!

I have been going to him now for many years for my dermatitis affliction. Things have improved so much since I first went to him. If only we could have more doctors in our medical profession like Dr. Scott Walsh!

What a gem! My new friend Gina

The best way for me to describe my new friend Gina is simply this. She a sweet and gentle lady with a heart of gold.

Her husband Richard is a wonderful person and together they have become my drivers. They are always so very accommodating and so very willing to help me with everything.

It is so very special whenever Gina drives me to the Apple Store. You see!  There are still nice and wonderful persons in this world and I am very lucky!

A new experience: Learning Pages

I have to admit that learning Pages was not as difficult as I thought it would be. And it sure helped that I had Devin beside me as my tutor.

Pages will definitely take me out of my comfort zone.  From a Windows PC to the Apple World on my iPhone and iPad. Yet, I am excited and always curious to learn new things.

One of these days, as they often say, curiosity may very well kill me, the cat 😁 !

Very pleased: My new track suits

Oh, yes, and this time Stephie really outdid herself. She knew exactly what I was looking for and with the utmost care and patience she went phone shopping at Amazon.

She managed to find the colours that I was seeking. Then, when they finally arrived I was very pleased. I even modeled the first one that I wore for her, using the What’s App.

A great addition to my home: DR. Ho's MotionCiser

I have to admit that I really agonized over this purchase before I decided to buy it. No, I'm not buying as much any more. With prices rising everywhere, this is a must.

Sandra helped me to get things together, which was not very difficult. This device is very easy to use and to understand.

I have to say that DR. Ho did a very good job in developing this device and I look forward to reaping the benefits. And for me as a vision-impaired person?  I always do my best to find uncomplicated devices.

Saving my life's work! Time to rejig

Oh yes!  Every now and then these moments arise for me and I am forced to take a deep breath, reevaluate the landscape, take stock, then to take things one step at a time.

This time it is all about realizing that I need to pull my precious little company out of the fire and to give it a new life. Nothing wrong with all of this but it requires patience, courage, and a willingness to change in order to stay afloat.

No getting away! Facing the music

I would definitely say that facing the music is not really a bad thing after all. It does not matter if it is on a personal level or on a professional level.

Too often, glitches in technology or my inability to deal with technological changes force me to face the music. I may not always want to admit or to deal with all of this but whatever it is, it is all about facing the music.

Sometimes facing the music is a good thing. Sometimes it is painful. But at the end of the day, it is all good.

To remember: Thanksgiving 2025

This was not much different than any past Thanksgiving. I embraced the holiday with gusto, as always. I made my contribution to meals for the less fortunate and then cooked a simple meal for one.

It was very quiet at my home. Made the customary phone call to Mom who was not with me for yet another Thanksgiving.

In my heart I thanked Jesus for having filled my life with privileges and pleasures. I live in a country that I am proud to call home. I have access to everything I need. No, Canada is not perfect but neither is any other country!

My new device: Getting used to my new iPhone

It always takes a wee bit more time for me whenever I get a new device and welcome it into my home. This was the case with my new iPhone 16E.

Yes, she is definitely a bit different. She is different in size. I do not have any screen protecting dots on my screen to guide me, and there are some minor differences to get used to. Turning on and off my new iPhone is different.

I have found quicker ways to access my mail and What’s app, and the layout in the phone app is a bit different when it comes to calling my friends via Facetime.

Once I get the hang of things re the layout, it will all be good.

Very exciting: At the Apple Store with new i devices

I can only describe this experience as both exciting, nerve racking, and throw in great expectation. It also helps when I am being supported by wonderful staff at the Apple Store and a patient and reassuring Stephie beside me.

The Apple Store is very noisy and overflowing with enthusiastic customers, but I am used to it now. I enjoyed the experience of being able to hold my new devices: my new iPhone and my new iPad.

I thank my so-called little brother Mike for having helped me to get all of this done.

Now it is time to buckle down to the real mission at hand. To get my initiative in memory of the late John Panarese on the road! Don’t worry John!  I’m coming!

Pleasant and enjoyable: A new restaurant to dine at

I always enjoy discovering new restaurants to dine at. Especially when they exude warmth, friendliness, and staff are very accommodating.

This restaurant is within easy access of driving to it. It is small, not too noisy, and oh, yes! I’ll definitely be back.

What a travesty! Making sure that nothing else is stolen

I guess that it has come to this. I know only too well that my treasured Mercedes Benz cushion will never be returned to me. Of course, none of these workmen will ever confess to having taken it.

So, this is why my Super now has to accompany them whenever they enter my condo to do work. This is a must, especially so since I will never know if they take something right in front of my eyes.

What a shame!

Lots of fun: Susan's weekly commentaries

Oh, yes, and it is definitely much more than knitting when I get together with Susan every week.

Susan is a going concern. She is effervescent, refreshing, and more than a bag full of knowledge. She is like a breeze in a bottle.

I knit and she checks my work. She guides me along in my knitting and then? I ask her to give me feedback on the headlines of the week and she is always ready to do just that.

I continue to learn so much from this wonderful lady!

Stressful and scary: The aftermath of a horrible exam experience

I don’t think that I was really prepared for this one but at the end of the day? Nothing is impossible!

I went prepared. I followed all of the preparations that I needed to do before the exam commenced and then came the tidal wave!

Stephie had already left and now it was just me with the scribe in the exam room. The young lady logged into the exam and read the instructions to me. I consented to the terms specified for taking the exam.

Then came the tidal wave. When she opened the core of the exam, the very first question contained diagrams and required my scribe to describe. She faltered and desperately said that she did not know how to describe them to me.

I then asked her to take a quick look at the list of questions to see how many other questions were similar in pattern. She checked and told me that there were several. Bang, and there was the tidal wave!

I decided to bring a halt to this horrible moment and I called Stephie and asked her to return! With heart beating quickly and a very concerned Stephie, I left knowing that yet another glitch in unequal learning had just occurred.

Cool heads prevailed: When Stephie temporarily lost my credit card

Circumstances such as these and bumps in the road are always going to take place and the best solution for me is to remain calm and logical. On this day poor Stephie, in her effort to help me all the way, became over zealous and in the middle of it all she temporarily lost my credit card.

So what did I do? Painfully and slowly I helped to trace her steps after I had given my card to her for safe keeping. And presto!  It worked.

There it was!  Lying on the floor inside the door of her apartment. Matter resolved!

Engaging with something new: Instagram

Thanks to Ran and Blair, I have gingerly entered the world of Instagram. For the most part, I have deliberately avoided engaging with Instagram because of the challenges of accessibility and navigation.

I am very fortunate to have Ran and Blair beside me. I know that this is not a perfect solution in that I am not independent enough to do this on my own. However, it is the best solution for now.

Blown away! The iPhone Translator

Guess I am never too old to learn, eh? The other day when Stephie and I went shopping at a Chinese supermarket, we were challenged to communicate with one of their agents. He did not speak much English and our skills to communicate in his language were zero.

So,what did he do? He pulled out his trusty iPhone and through gesturing and pointing, we managed to somehow tell him what we were seeking.

Presto!  He found what we were looking for in no time. Another wonder of the iPhone translator.

Faithful to the end: My Precious Orchids

For so many years now I have had the good fortune to be able to grow orchids and keep them in the window of my living room. When I had enough vision, I loved to admire and marvel over their gorgeous colours. And now that I can no longer see them, I find enjoyment in touching their thick flowers.

I run my hand up and down their stalks and I fondle their thick luscious leaves. I simply love communicating with my precious orchids.

This hurts! When something precious is stolen

I don’t think that I am any different from the rest of society when it comes to feelings of loss and anger after something precious is stolen. Especially so when said something is unique, a sort of heirloom, and no one can be held responsible for said theft.

This is what happened to me when one of the contractors working at my condo complex stole my Mercedes car cushion. This was no ordinary cushion.  It was in the shape of a Mercedes car and could be opened up to be the shape of said car.

This is going to be very difficult to find on the Internet, let alone be replaced, and the one who stole it should be ashamed of themselves for having stolen from a person with a vision impairment.

We need more little Clairs! Oh Clair

How very fortunate I am to have had such an exceptional lady and human being be part of my life.  Albeit it was just a tad too short.

I got to know Clair when we both became members of the Air Canada advisory committee. From the very start when I met her, she walked the walk with me.

She guided me, listened to my input, was always there to assist, and at the end of the day her presence enriched my experience.

Clair was unique.  She had the gift of giving.  She was generous and kind, patient and compassionate. Clair observed, quietly contributed, and made the world a better place for all of us who were lucky to know her.

Rest in peace, Clair.  Thank you for having fought the good fight. Until we meet again!

It never gets easier! Saying goodbye to Mom once more

It never gets easier each time I have to leave Mom after another visit.

What I have accidentally discovered is that it is easier when she accompanies me to the airport. Not sure why it is easier this way but it sure is.

Could it be that it is more meaningful to have her come with me to the airport? Whatever it is, maybe it is because there are more people around us!

Then neither of us will feel sad when the final minute comes

This is never really easy for me and each time it only becomes a tad more difficult.

Too bad: Crystal's unfortunate action

As they say!  You almost always reap what you sow.  Or to look at it in a different way? Be honest in all you do!

This did not apply to poor Crystal, one of Mom’s care givers. In short, she did not tell her boss or us that she was 8 months pregnant and this is an absolute  must. Especially so for a care giver.

Mom had noticed it on this particular morning and then my sister in law confirmed it about an hour later.

We would never know why Crystal chose this path, but at the end of the day she could easily have brought harm to herself.
