A new experience: Learning Pages
I have to admit that learning Pages was not as difficult as I thought it would be. And it sure helped that I had Devin beside me as my tutor.
Pages will definitely take me out of my comfort zone. From a Windows PC to the Apple World on my iPhone and iPad. Yet, I am excited and always curious to learn new things.
One of these days, as they often say, curiosity may very well kill me, the cat 😁 !

Very pleased: My new track suits
Oh, yes, and this time Stephie really outdid herself. She knew exactly what I was looking for and with the utmost care and patience she went phone shopping at Amazon.
She managed to find the colours that I was seeking. Then, when they finally arrived I was very pleased. I even modeled the first one that I wore for her, using the What’s App.

A great addition to my home: DR. Ho's MotionCiser
Sandra helped me to get things together, which was not very difficult. This device is very easy to use and to understand.
I have to say that DR. Ho did a very good job in developing this device and I look forward to reaping the benefits. And for me as a vision-impaired person? I always do my best to find uncomplicated devices.

My precious ones! Flowers still going
Oh, yes, my beloved orchids are still standing tall. They sit on the window sill in my living room.

No getting away! Facing the music
I would definitely say that facing the music is not really a bad thing after all. It does not matter if it is on a personal level or on a professional level.
Too often, glitches in technology or my inability to deal with technological changes force me to face the music. I may not always want to admit or to deal with all of this but whatever it is, it is all about facing the music.
Sometimes facing the music is a good thing. Sometimes it is painful. But at the end of the day, it is all good.

To remember: Thanksgiving 2025
This was not much different than any past Thanksgiving. I embraced the holiday with gusto, as always. I made my contribution to meals for the less fortunate and then cooked a simple meal for one.
It was very quiet at my home. Made the customary phone call to Mom who was not with me for yet another Thanksgiving.
In my heart I thanked Jesus for having filled my life with privileges and pleasures. I live in a country that I am proud to call home. I have access to everything I need. No, Canada is not perfect but neither is any other country!

My new device: Getting used to my new iPhone
Yes, she is definitely a bit different. She is different in size. I do not have any screen protecting dots on my screen to guide me, and there are some minor differences to get used to. Turning on and off my new iPhone is different.
I have found quicker ways to access my mail and What’s app, and the layout in the phone app is a bit different when it comes to calling my friends via Facetime.
Once I get the hang of things re the layout, it will all be good.

Very exciting: At the Apple Store with new i devices
I can only describe this experience as both exciting, nerve racking, and throw in great expectation. It also helps when I am being supported by wonderful staff at the Apple Store and a patient and reassuring Stephie beside me.
The Apple Store is very noisy and overflowing with enthusiastic customers, but I am used to it now. I enjoyed the experience of being able to hold my new devices: my new iPhone and my new iPad.
I thank my so-called little brother Mike for having helped me to get all of this done.
Now it is time to buckle down to the real mission at hand. To get my initiative in memory of the late John Panarese on the road! Don’t worry John! I’m coming!

Lots of fun: Susan's weekly commentaries
Susan is a going concern. She is effervescent, refreshing, and more than a bag full of knowledge. She is like a breeze in a bottle.
I knit and she checks my work. She guides me along in my knitting and then? I ask her to give me feedback on the headlines of the week and she is always ready to do just that.

Stressful and scary: The aftermath of a horrible exam experience
I don’t think that I was really prepared for this one but at the end of the day? Nothing is impossible!
I went prepared. I followed all of the preparations that I needed to do before the exam commenced and then came the tidal wave!
Stephie had already left and now it was just me with the scribe in the exam room. The young lady logged into the exam and read the instructions to me. I consented to the terms specified for taking the exam.
Then came the tidal wave. When she opened the core of the exam, the very first question contained diagrams and required my scribe to describe. She faltered and desperately said that she did not know how to describe them to me.
I then asked her to take a quick look at the list of questions to see how many other questions were similar in pattern. She checked and told me that there were several. Bang, and there was the tidal wave!
I decided to bring a halt to this horrible moment and I called Stephie and asked her to return! With heart beating quickly and a very concerned Stephie, I left knowing that yet another glitch in unequal learning had just occurred.

Cool heads prevailed: When Stephie temporarily lost my credit card
Circumstances such as these and bumps in the road are always going to take place and the best solution for me is to remain calm and logical. On this day poor Stephie, in her effort to help me all the way, became over zealous and in the middle of it all she temporarily lost my credit card.
So what did I do? Painfully and slowly I helped to trace her steps after I had given my card to her for safe keeping. And presto! It worked.
There it was! Lying on the floor inside the door of her apartment. Matter resolved!

Engaging with something new: Instagram
Thanks to Ran and Blair, I have gingerly entered the world of Instagram. For the most part, I have deliberately avoided engaging with Instagram because of the challenges of accessibility and navigation.
I am very fortunate to have Ran and Blair beside me. I know that this is not a perfect solution in that I am not independent enough to do this on my own. However, it is the best solution for now.

Blown away! The iPhone Translator
Guess I am never too old to learn, eh? The other day when Stephie and I went shopping at a Chinese supermarket, we were challenged to communicate with one of their agents. He did not speak much English and our skills to communicate in his language were zero.
So,what did he do? He pulled out his trusty iPhone and through gesturing and pointing, we managed to somehow tell him what we were seeking.
Presto! He found what we were looking for in no time. Another wonder of the iPhone translator.

Faithful to the end: My Precious Orchids
For so many years now I have had the good fortune to be able to grow orchids and keep them in the window of my living room. When I had enough vision, I loved to admire and marvel over their gorgeous colours. And now that I can no longer see them, I find enjoyment in touching their thick flowers.
I run my hand up and down their stalks and I fondle their thick luscious leaves. I simply love communicating with my precious orchids.

This hurts! When something precious is stolen
This is what happened to me when one of the contractors working at my condo complex stole my Mercedes car cushion. This was no ordinary cushion. It was in the shape of a Mercedes car and could be opened up to be the shape of said car.
This is going to be very difficult to find on the Internet, let alone be replaced, and the one who stole it should be ashamed of themselves for having stolen from a person with a vision impairment.

We need more little Clairs! Oh Clair
I got to know Clair when we both became members of the Air Canada advisory committee. From the very start when I met her, she walked the walk with me.
She guided me, listened to my input, was always there to assist, and at the end of the day her presence enriched my experience.
Clair was unique. She had the gift of giving. She was generous and kind, patient and compassionate. Clair observed, quietly contributed, and made the world a better place for all of us who were lucky to know her.
Rest in peace, Clair. Thank you for having fought the good fight. Until we meet again!

It never gets easier! Saying goodbye to Mom once more
It never gets easier each time I have to leave Mom after another visit.
What I have accidentally discovered is that it is easier when she accompanies me to the airport. Not sure why it is easier this way but it sure is.
Could it be that it is more meaningful to have her come with me to the airport? Whatever it is, maybe it is because there are more people around us!

Too bad: Crystal's unfortunate action
This did not apply to poor Crystal, one of Mom’s care givers. In short, she did not tell her boss or us that she was 8 months pregnant and this is an absolute must. Especially so for a care giver.
Mom had noticed it on this particular morning and then my sister in law confirmed it about an hour later.
We would never know why Crystal chose this path, but at the end of the day she could easily have brought harm to herself.

Precious time: Another birthday for Mom
Each birthday for Mom is going to be bigger than the previous one! Why? Because she is inching closer to the biggest one!
For this year, we celebrated in the way that she always likes. First breakfast with me. Moya brought her favourite omelette and waffles. It was a huge meal but she enjoyed it all!
Then a lovely lunch with Jeff, Gayle, and Bryan and Moya. It was good and the waiters sang Happy Birthday for Mom.
Then home to have a nice nap! That was her birthday for this year!

Precious little ones! Waiting to say goodbye to the butterflies
The beauty and mystery about these butterflies is that we never know when they will appear and for how long they will stay. This time when I was visiting Mom they graced us with their presence several times.
They would appear out of the blue and Mom would announce their presence for me. They would fly around us but in total their visit would only last but for a few short minutes.
I cannot see them but I can sure imagine them flying close to us. I have named the main butterfly Josefine. She is white with brown wings. There is another butterfly and she is a very pale yellow in colour.
Now I wait to say goodbye to them as I prepare to leave Mom.

Such precious memories! Mom in her kitchen
Mom decides what task she wants to take on for the day. She rises out of her chair and along with her walker she strides to her kitchen with me following. She tells me what she is going to do.
I fetch all of the necessary implements, bowls, cutting board, and then I wait patiently for the next step. Mom asks me to bring her high chair to her and I do so, positioning it in front of the stove.
Before this, however, I lay out her implements and fetch whatever else she needs. I chop onions and other things as she wants and wash up as we go along.
Finally it is to the stove and I stand guard as Mom cooks and then she asks me to taste. I do so with great enthusiasm and finally she is done. I complete washing up and Mom retreats to her chair to rest and relax.
I replace her high chair and all is now done.

The balancing act: Mom's new care giver
I have to say that since her mishap, Mom has been relatively fortunate to have reasonably good care givers. No one is perfect and these ladies continue to do to the best of their abilities. Except for Michelle, the care givers have been acceptable.
Her new care giver is quiet, pleasant, and helps when she is called upon. She offers to help whenever she observes that Mom needs help.
It may not be easy for these care givers to be on the job all day but it is also not easy for Mom who continually needs to ensure that they stay on track.

What a brave boy! Visiting Christian
This is such a very difficult time for me personally, and why? Despite Christian’s cheerful demeanour, it is so difficult for me to deal with his ordeal. Poor Christian has been battling his illness for over 2 years now.
He never complains and takes everything like a man. Char is so very supportive to him and Mom and I spend the next hour or so chatting with them both. We ask Moya to wait outside with Ramlall.

Wonderful times: Going grocery shopping with Mom and Moya
This is probably one of the highlights whenever I visit Mom. Yes, going grocery shopping with Mom and Moya.
We get into Ramlall’s car, which is hot because there is no air conditioner, and off we go. Then, soon enough we are at the supermarket.
Mom gets into her wheelchair and Ramlall goes off to get the shopping cart. Then I stand behind the wheelchair and Moya guides us into the supermarket.
For the next hour we traverse the aisles with Mom directing traffic. She knows exactly what she wants and Moya goes off to fetch the desired items.
Ramlall helps and before you know it our shopping trip is over. Mom pays and then we leave the supermarket.
We buy lunch on the way home and then comes the hardest part of this outing. Mom changes into her home clothes and proceeds to her chair where she sits waiting for lunch. Moya unpacks the goods and Ramlall leaves while she is doing this. Then, finally our day of shopping is done.

Such beautiful and delicate ones: The beautiful butterflies
On my most recent trip to visit Mom, we did not have the pleasure of enjoying our beautiful butterflies in Mom’s garden.
We named a white butterfly Josefine and each time we sat in Mom’s garden Mom kept watching for Josefine to appear. Once or twice Josefine did fly by and Mom was so very excited to see her.
I always enjoy these special moments when Josefine comes by and Mom describes her visit. She flies back and forth in front of us and then she is gone.

Enjoying being together: Laundry time
I turn off the tap and the washer. Sometimes Mom and I hang out the clothes together but I really do not mind doing this alone.
All done and when the clothes are dry, I take them off their hangers and bring them to her where she carefully folds each piece of clothing and then I put them away.

Warm and wonderful feelings: Cooking again with Mom
I help her to lay out her stuff. Then I bring her the high chair for her to sit on. She goes slowly and surely and I wait for her to tell me how to help her.
I hustle to the fridge, to the cupboards, and then I wash up the utensils and wipe down the counters as we go. Mom is so very meticulous and I never stop admiring how she does it!
I am her official taster. Her can opener and her bottle opener. We cook, we bake, and we invent all kinds of recipes. That’s my beloved Mom.

Very humorous: Trying to find Mom
This is probably one of my most entertaining experiences every time I visit Mom. She is just so very skilled with her walker that whenever she chooses, she moves around quietly so as not to either alert us or to let us know where she is.
This has happened to me so many times and each time I have to smile to myself. She rises out of her chair, grips her walker, and then moves quickly around.
She lifts her walker as she goes and puts it down gently on the floor as she walks. The other day I went looking for her and no way could I find her.
I checked the washroom, the laundry room, the kitchen, and I finally found her in her room moving around amongst her things. Oh, yes! That’s my Mom!

Not very easy: Returning to the exercise bike
Oh yes, and it is high time that I do so. I started this in August 2025 and thus far it has yielded great results for my diabetes and my sugar levels.
I jump on my bike as often as I can and pedal as robustly as I can for about 15 minutes. I sweat, my heart races, and I am very happy.
As a vision-impaired person I need to find ways to exercise more robustly as it is difficult for me to run, walk, and do other outdoor activities on my own.

That's my girl: Seeing Mom again after six months
This is probably one of the biggest thrills of my life! Each time I return to visit Mom my heart is simply overwhelmed with joy, excitement, and a wonderful longing to see her again.
I am able to sleep on the plane as it flies through the early morning and I wake just in time to make sure that I visit the bathroom, comb my hair, and wash my face.
Then there is the process of clearing customs, picking up my luggage, buying alcohol for Ramlall and chocolates for the care givers, then finally exiting the terminal.
Those beautiful birds always greet me with rich melodious songs as I come out into the fresh air with the sun shining down on me. The drive to Mom’s house is always very entertaining with Ramlall and as the sun shines through the windows of his car, I prepare myself for my greeting with my beloved Mom.
And then finally I climb the steps to her house and scamper down the hall and into the kitchen area where she sits waiting for me. She rises and hugs me so tightly saying, “welcome home.” Then it is time to start enjoying quality time with her.

Embarrassing: The airline scare
Leave it to Caribbean Airlines to do this to me, or should I say one of their agents who represented the airline. I was told by this agent that I could not take my carry on with me on board because there would not be anyone to help me to put it up into the overhead bin.
This was the first time that I was hearing this in my entire traveling life. He went on to tell me that I should take my stuff out of my carry on and put it into a bag.
When I told him that my carry on contained my medication and my laptop and asked where would I get a bag at this late time he simply stood there and did not answer.
I further told him that I would put my own carry on into the overhead bin myself. I then told him that if I could not take my carry on with me, which was well within the airline’s specifications, I would simply not be traveling.
It was then that the wonderful airport agent offered to help me. Shame on this airline’s agent. He never even apologized for his statements.

Nervous and anxious: The CompTIA exam challenge
Each time I dare to take an online exam I have to admit that my heart is practically beating quickly in my clammy hands. For I never know what to expect.
Will it go well or will there be technical challenges? Will I have-on site technical support? Will the access technology behave when communicating with the exam?
This is what happened on October 1, 2025, when I went to take my network security exam. The poor scribe/reader was unable to read the exam. There was no computer set up with a screen reader for me and so the exam had to be cancelled by me.
What a disappointment and once again accessibility failed to be there for me. Now I need to work on getting this fixed, not just for me but for any other vision-impaired person wishing to take these online exams.

Learning something new: The Sunflower discovery
For whereas I understand the purpose of the wearing a sunflower lanyard when traveling, I am not sure if it goes far enough to render assistance to me as a vision-impaired traveler.
The sunflower identifies the wearer to others around them that they need special attention as a person with a disability. This is great, but just one wee step more and for me that I could be more comfortable as a vision- impaired traveler that those around me could better understand my requirements.

What a shock! A surprise for Caribbean Airlines
When I got to the check-in counter I was told by the airline’s agent that I could not take my carry-on case on board because there would not be anyone to help me put it into the overhead bin.
The agent suggested that I get a bag and put everything into it. So what was I going to do with my medication and my laptop? Where was I going to find a bag at this late stage?
The agent refused to budge but when the very nice airport agent offered to help me with my carry-on case the agent stood there and said nothing!
I told the check-in agent that if I could not take my carry-on case on board, which was well within the specifications of size, that I would not be flying.
What a horrible experience and especially for me as a vision-impaired person.

Thank God for Stephie! The Amazon experience
Call me a lazy one but for me it is much easier to ask my friend Stephie to order for me.
Together, Stephie and I search Amazon for whatever I need. She describes it to me and together we make the decision as to what I would like her to order.
Stephie has become really good at understanding what my likes are. She describes things in detail to me and this is an advantage for me in that if I were to order on my own I would not always know how the product looks. So there is my excuse.
Ordering via Amazon is nice and easy but I've just got to watch my spending.

Got to get ready! Traveling again
If I know that someone will be at the other end to meet me, like Jilla in the UK or Cathie and Chris in Montreal, then it is fun. However, when I need to do it on trips where I check in on my own and then travel on my own? No, no fun!
The landscape for traveling has changed dramatically and for me, as a vision-impaired person, it has become nerve racking and very stressful.

Rubbing my hands together! Getting ready for fall pottery
I am always really excited when fall comes and it’s a new season for my pottery.
Oh yes, and it’s time for Shaun and me to decide what am I going to make for the season! We sit and relax with a cup of tea in my case and a cup of coffee for Shaun.
Then we allow our imaginations to roam and wander. We exchange ideas and before you know it? We have a plan and Shaun sets about to bring me my implements and templates.
We have a plan and for the next few weeks I’ll be working diligently with Shaun right beside me guiding and prodding me along!

They scare me! Where are the wasps
This is one thing that really makes me nervous and that is when those sneaky wasps come near me.
On the whole I never know when they are near me, and not until they are practically in my face, so to speak.
They do not make any noise as they approach, so where a person with sight can see them coming, for a vision-impaired person it is practically impossible.
They usually make their presence known when the weather is warm. Just be careful not to have any sweet things around, or meat.
If I dare to sit outdoors at a restaurant, I need to have my poor friends be my lookout. Then I need to remember that if they alight upon me, do not swat them, because bingo! Their friends and relatives will soon be upon me! Summoned by those buzzing wasps!

Learning to cope : Dealing with a running toilet tank
Ob boy, this is not my favourite challenge. When this happens I normally take a deep breath and then dive into the problem, so to speak.
First, I remove the tank’s cover. Next I plunge my hands into the cold water and locate the flusher. Then I raise the flusher and allow the water to run out of the tank. Then I replace the cover and pray that this has fixed the problem.
On many occasions, however, I need to call on my special Super Nick to rescue me.

The beat continues: Challenges of signing up for online exams
This continues to be a huge challenge for persons with vision loss. The inability to sign up independently for online exams.
First off, many websites are difficult to navigate and forms are a challenge to complete. This is what happened to me when I went to sign up for my Cyber Security Course with the Pearson Brunei company.
The online website was difficult to navigate and even my very capable and qualified sighted friend had problems doing it for me. It took months before we could finally schedule a date.

Oh my Precious one! Going to Church with Precious Pearl
My Precious Pearl is indeed a very special person! I met Pearl many years ago when she became my volunteer driver.
We started with her accompanying me to medical appointments and soon we found ourselves being fast friends. Over the years, we have shared many restaurant lunches, I have played her piano at her home, and we have shared so much more.
Pearl is responsible for bringing me back to Church. She introduced me to Father Ron and to several other parishioners. Going to Church with Pearl is one of the most special times for me.
Pearl is gentle, kind, generous, and so much more. I am just so fortunate that Jesus has brought her into my life.

Not my favourite place: A noisy restaurant
Not my favourite spot or location to be!
Noisy restaurants often make me very nervous and anxious! My hearing is greatly affected!
I cannot even hear myself think let alone hear my dining companions!
Restaurants are even more noisy now than they were not too long ago and they will probably progress to more noise with time.
