A new experience: Ordering lunch at the mall

It is now the new way of ordering lunch at the mall.  It’s busy but orderly. The servers are quite friendly and we just need to ensure that we choose what we want to.

Things have really changed. Now with Mom and Moya going together and Gayle and I walking together. It used to be Mom and me but now that she needs a wheelchair to travel around, it is different.

It is still fun!  Everyone choosing and then we all sit down together at a nice big table to eat and chat.

Frustrating times: When the fork challenges me

 

Ah, yes!  That precious fork!  I often tell myself that I need to be more patient when eating with my fork.  You see, too many times when I use my fork to eat I am not always successful when I attempt to bring my food to my mouth.

Yes, my fork finds my food and then I then take the next step to stick it and bring it to my mouth or I slide my fork under my food and then proceed to bring it to my mouth, but alas!  The fork often forgets to pick up my food and bring it to me!

I do not think that this is a unique problem but for a sighted person they can see when the fork does not do its job.  For me, on the other hand as someone who is vision-impaired, I either miss my food completely or the food falls off my fork and by the time I bring my fork to my mouth it is empty.

Is anyone looking? Navigating a lunch plate on the plane

Let's face it! There is no getting away from it! Whenever a vision-impaired person needs to eat their meal on a plane, he/she is almost always going to attract unwanted attention from an onlooker who would naturally be curious to see how we manage and, in several cases, to offer help if necessary. That is, if food or drink is spilled.

This is why I take extra care to ensure that my food and drink stay on my plate and in my glass or cup.

First, I carefully remove my cutlery from my serviette and place it gently in my lap. Then I take a mental/physical tour of my meal tray in order to locate my salad, main meal, and dessert. And, oh yes! Let us not forget the bread and butter. Finally, my fingers wander to the top of the tray to locate my wine and water.

Once this is done I start my meal, ensuring that I do not spill any food or drink. As a seasoned traveler, I have grown quite used to this routine and have it all memorized. More often than not, the air hosts and hostesses are always there to lend a hand and even go the extra mile to tell me where things are on my tray.

Priceless treasures! Running commentaries from Mom

I am so used to these now that I consider them to be an integral part of my life.  That is, whenever we visit each other.  From sitting quietly together in front of the TV to dining together at our kitchen table.  From dining out at a restaurant to walking in the mall or grocery shopping or walking outdoors.

These are the running commentaries that I have grown to expect and love. They are given so selflessly, freely, and so kindly and humbly. They are given from the heart!  They are given without me even having to ask!

Funny and humorous: The mystery of the tamarind seeds

I can tell you that this specific experience still gives me a chuckle each time I think about it.  I'll do my best here to reproduce it.

I had just finished eating a tamarind ball and had gathered the seeds in my hand but then I was too lazy to leave my chair and put them in the garbage.

Soon enough I was falling asleep in my chair and I must have put my clenched hand with the seeds in it close to my left cheek.  Some time later I woke up and felt something on my cheek.

I brushed them away and my first reaction was that they were some kind of insect.  So what did I do?  I called for Mom's help and soon enough she solved the mystery!

No insect!  Just the tamarind seeds that fell out of my clenched hand and onto my cheek.  I woke up to feel them and brushed them away! My smile for the day!

Enjoying! At the dinner table with Sandra

She is my neighbor, my friend, and someone that I truly enjoy dining with. I have known her for many years now and it is always lots of fun each time we have dinner together.

Sandra knows exactly how to give assistance to me as someone who is visually impaired.  Not too much help but just enough.  I do not even have to ask her; she is always just close enough to help me.

She reads the menu to me.  She is watchful when the waiter comes to take our orders.  She helps me when it comes to sharing dishes that we have ordered together.  She tells me where everything is on the table.  She even describes what's around me in the dining room.

That's my Sandra!  The perfect dining companion!

Remembering - Protecting my food from kitty

This is almost always the case each time I go to visit my best friend, Char, in Montreal.  Me doing my level best to ensure that her cat does not sneak by to sample my food.

I know that it is only natural for cats to be inquisitive anytime they smell food but even more so when visitors invade their home.  So I come prepared to protect my food.

The thing is that when you are visually impaired and do not have enough vision to see when kitty is approaching, you run into a challenge.  Add to this the fact that kitty walks very softly, too softly for you to hear him coming and by the time you realize it, his head is practically in your plate or bowl.

I have grown used to kitty now so it is not a problem for me, just something to be aware of each time I visit Char.

My ice cream cone

This is one of the most enjoyable things that Mom and I often engage in every time we go shopping.  We always remember to have an ice cream cone after we have had our lunch.

We make our way to the ice cream counter of Laura Secord here in Toronto and we each order our favorite flavor.  For me it is often chocolate or now and then it is strawberry.  Mom likes anything that has nuts in it.

Then we find an empty space for two and there we sit, eating our cones slowly and with gusto.  My main objective is to ensure that I do not spill any of the delicious stuff all over me.  I am very careful, ensuring to keep my ice cream in my cone.

I know that Mom is watching also to ensure that I am okay.  Then, when we are both finished, we rise slowly and throw our soiled serviettes into the garbage bin.

Ah, yes!  Eating my ice cream cone with Mom!
