A shock for me: Seeing Mom in her new environment

I will openly admit that this was probably the hardest visit for me to make to my mom's. Poor Mom fell on June 28, 2023, and due to business travel commitments I was not able to reach her until a few weeks later.

I was so very nervous and anxious in anticipation of seeing her. I prayed for strength and faith and upon entering her home I was greeted by one of her care givers.

I kept calling to her as I ran towards her but she did not respond. The care giver told me to walk straight and when I finally located her, she did not say a word.

I held her tightly and kissed her. I placed my cheek against hers and told her how sorry I was. It took Mom a minute or so before she responded to me.

What a shock!  One of the saddest moments of my life. But soon Mom and I were moving towards the master bedroom. She was so very composed and this sure made it easier for me to settle down and to gather my thoughts.

It continues to be a very long and winding road ahead but my Miracle Mom will definitely never give up or give in.

When I got to play nurse: Helping Mom with her ankle band

My poor Mom!  On my recent visit I had to help her put on her ankle band as she dealt with a bad right ankle.

Needless to say, my main focus was to ensure that I caused her the least amount of pain as possible.  I am very sure that I often hurt her when helping to put it on and take it off.  I tried to be as gentle as possible, slipping it on from the bottom up when putting it on and then reversing the process when taking it off.

The ankle band was very tight on several occasions and required Mom and me to work together to adjust and readjust our positions during both processes.

My biggest fear was that I was hurting her. But as a true trooper, she never complained, instead choosing to egg me on and to give me feedback on how I was doing.  A great team of the blind and the hard of hearing working together!

Not a very happy moment: When the speakers went silent

Not a very nice experience for me, especially when I had no voice output to guide me to fix it. So, I had to call my neighbour Sandra to rescue me.

I am not very sure why this happened but suffice it to say that Sandra had to fix it by going to the speakers output panel and the rest was history.

I use speakers to channel voice output on my computer. I guess that I could have used my headphones to help me solve the problem but I never even thought of this. Besides, I may not have quite known what to do.

In future, I'll be a lot more careful when handling my speakers.

Always interesting: Navigating when family is around

My family is probably one of the most understanding bunch when it comes to being around me. In fact, they are so very helpful, so very caring, and always willing to go the extra mile to ensure that I am included and catered to.

I simply do not need to worry when navigating around them. They are all there to guide me, show me the way, and lend lots of humor while everything is going on.

From assisting when meals are being served to giving me their ready arms while walking to helping me find a seat or anything else; they are all there for me and I have absolutely no concerns when navigating around them!

That's my family.

Helping staff to understand: At the medical lab

They are getting better but there is still work to be done when it comes to how staff at the lab interact with me as a vision-impaired person.  Most times when I go there they would get a passing mark when it comes to how they communicate with me.

For example, they do not always place the health card in my hand when I put out my hand to receive it after they have asked for it and have finished with it.  However, they are getting better.

Most of the time my friend escorts me to the testing room but after I have given blood they do not escort me back to the waiting room and if I need to go to the washroom to collect urine they do not seem to know what to do when I walk out of the washroom.

The other day my friend had to mildly scold them to assist me when she discovered me wandering around in the hallway as I was trying to find my way back to the waiting room.  This is just going to be a work in progress
despite the many years that I have been going there.

Happy times! With Mom in her kitchen

It is one of my favourite times, with Mom in her kitchen.

She is at her stove, cooking, and I am standing close by, chatting with her. She describes what she is doing and then she lets me taste her cooking creations.

I taste, I think, and then I give her my feedback. Sometimes she adds more ingredients or maybe she would alter some ingredients; then she lets me taste again.

Sometimes I get to be her baking assistant. I grease the pans, chop vegetables for a salad, peel potatoes and hard boiled eggs, and then I always do the dishes.

I often fetch things for her from the fridge or help her to pack away groceries. I often share snacks with her but the most enjoyable and meaningful times are when we get to eat together in her kitchen. These are
the most priceless and precious moments for me.

Meet my team! Mom and me at the airport

She is my eyes and I am her ears. She sees everything for me and I hear everything for her.

We rarely miss much. We are both very comfortable in our roles. We help each other and we protect each other. We look out for each other and we explain things to each other.

When agents explain things, I listen and then I relay info to Mom.  I need to speak a bit loudly to her so that she can hear me.  Whenever agents approach and start speaking, Mom tells me that they are speaking to us and then I do my part.

We make an excellent team.

Refreshing times: At the Apple store

This is a store that never seems to sleep but I have grown accustomed to this and each time I walk in I never stop marveling at how helpful and attentive the staff is.

I do not even need to tell them that I am vision impaired; they always seem to know it.  They are alert and very quick to understand my needs.  They give me my appointment and then I am back to get my stuff updated and whatever else I need to do.

On my most recent trip I met a wonderful young man whose name is Leandro and he is in a wheelchair.  Leandro was so very attentive, accommodating, and so very helpful.  He got me going and then handed me over to his colleague to finish off my requests.

This store is located in the Fairview Mall in Scarborough and I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking Apple services.

A very good aunt: Thinking of Auntie

Sometimes I can be held guilty of not thinking enough of those who have helped so much during my lifetime and this is the case with my God Mother, Auntie Enid.

Here is a lady who has had so much to deal with throughout her life and although I have had so much difficulty understanding a lot of what she has done, it does not take away from the fact that in her own way she has been good to me.

Auntie never discriminated against me as a blind child and this has expanded into my adult life.  She has always been so prompt to render help and seek help for me whenever I am around her.  Now it is time for me to return this precious favour.

A pleasure to have worked with you: Good luck, Melanie

From time to time one is lucky to meet a very unusual person and this is exactly how I felt when I met Melanie Charron at Elections Canada.  She was unique because she understood and she knew exactly what to do.  She was innovative and insightful and she always seemed to know what to do before I asked her a question.

I met Melanie in February 2014 and had the pleasure of working with her until March 2018. It was a great experience for me and I learned a lot from her.

Whenever I traveled to Ottawa to attend one of the face-to-face meetings hosted by Elections Canada, Melanie was always there to lend a helping hand.  Her guiding techniques were first class and her commitment to attention was second to none.  Melanie knew how to communicate with me as someone who is vision-impaired.

At my last meeting she went beyond the call of duty to place a dongle on the door to my hotel room; a very thoughtful and innovative action.

Good luck, Melanie!  I am going to miss you!

A wonderful young man: Working with Shane

I met Shane in 2017 when I visited Seneca College to write one of my law exams and he is probably one of the most patient support technicians that I have met in a very long time.  Not only is he patient but he is thorough and intuitive.

I have had to call on Shane's services in times of need when I required assistance to sort out email clients and more.  Shane has never made me uncomfortable nor has he seemed to be uncomfortable with working with me as a vision-impaired person.

A joy to work with: He is my favorite customer service techie

His name is Imad and it does appear to me that there is nothing that he cannot do.  He is smart and savvy but above all he knows how to explain things to me, especially so as to someone who is vision-impaired.

I have known Imad for many years now.  He is so aware of my requirements and he knows how to work with me.  He takes his time to explain things to me and he is so very patient.  The most important thing is that he is not afraid to work with me as someone who is vision-impaired.

Funny and humorous: The mystery of the tamarind seeds

I can tell you that this specific experience still gives me a chuckle each time I think about it.  I'll do my best here to reproduce it.

I had just finished eating a tamarind ball and had gathered the seeds in my hand but then I was too lazy to leave my chair and put them in the garbage.

Soon enough I was falling asleep in my chair and I must have put my clenched hand with the seeds in it close to my left cheek.  Some time later I woke up and felt something on my cheek.

I brushed them away and my first reaction was that they were some kind of insect.  So what did I do?  I called for Mom's help and soon enough she solved the mystery!

No insect!  Just the tamarind seeds that fell out of my clenched hand and onto my cheek.  I woke up to feel them and brushed them away! My smile for the day!

It sure made me laugh despite being frustrating: When my rack of clothes fell

I need not tell you how very upset, unhappy, and anxious I was the day that my rack of clothes fell and I can only say thank God that Mom and Nick, my Super, were there to help me.

The one thing which I believe saved me from going off the track was that my clothes were all arranged in logical order, according to me, so it was not too difficult to put them back in their rightful spots.

Nick was very good when it came to making sure that everything was done correctly.  He made sure to strengthen the brackets holding up the rack and then he even offered to help put back my clothes.

Here is where Mom came in.  She patiently helped me to rearrange and she checked to make sure that I had done everything correctly.  What a day and good thing that it does not happen very often.

For someone with little vision it is so important to be able to know where things are.

A wonderful experience: Great volunteers

There are volunteers and then there are volunteers and this is what I discovered in September 2017 when I attended a conference hosted by the Canadian Human Rights Commission in Ottawa.

Each volunteer that I interacted with was definitely a cut above the best! They were well-trained when it came to rendering assistance to me as a vision-impaired person.  They communicated so well, offered assistance beyond the call of duty, and certainly helped to make my time spent at the conference a pleasurable and memorable one.

We need more of this type of volunteer to help improve communications between persons with disabilities and the sighted world.

So very frustrating: At the North York General Hospital

Going to a hospital to have tests done or even for surgery is definitely not my favorite thing and I can bet that it is not for most of us.  However, when you are a vision-impaired person there are other things that are more challenging.

If you meet staff who have the additional patience to be of assistance then that is fine. But when they are overworked, or simply do not have the patience, then here is where the challenges occur.

I have met both types and each time I need to go to the hospital then I usually pray very hard before setting out.  If they do not fully explain what they are going to do then this is a challenge.  Or if they do something and do not tell me then this is yet another challenge.

Whenever they think that I cannot get undressed or dressed on my own and ask my friend or Mom to help me, then this is an embarrassment.  Or whenever they shout at me because I cannot hear them then this is yet another embarrassment.

What could be the solution?  More awareness training is needed.

Pushing myself: Asking for help at the service desk

This is the way that I manage each and every time I travel.  I make it a must for me to make friends, so to speak, at the service desk of the hotel at which I am staying.

I explain my needs and requirements to the staff and nine out of ten times it works like a charm.  I ask questions; I very politely state my needs, and presto!  Staff are always more than ready to help.

Resetting Mom's clock

This is not one of my favorite tasks to do for Mom but it must be done and I am the one to help out here.  So this is how I go about it all.

First I remove both batteries; one is for the chimes and the other is for the time.  Then Mom gets to work to set the time. She is steady and sure and after she has done her part then I take over.

We put in the two new batteries and then I start to program her chimes.  I need to be slow and sure, as well.

I gingerly feel for the button that is lowest on the panel that is at the back of the clock.  Well, it is not exactly a panel.  It is a sort of a groove built into the back of the clock.  Then I start to count with each press of the button until I obtain the number of hours that I desire.  That is, each press of the button represents an hour.

When I think that I have matched the number of hours to the number of presses of the button that I have made, I gently close the back of the clock and then both Mom and I start to pray.

Fortunately, the clock is able to program for itself the number of chimes that denote the quarter, half, and three quarters of an hour.  It took me a while to figure out how this clock works but now I think that Mom and I have found a way to deal with it all.

Finding Mom's pills

This was quite an experience for me, recently, when I went to find Mom's pills. She was lying on her couch and having difficulty with her knee and she had asked me to find her pills so that she could take one with a glass of water to help with the pain. So, off I went as per her instructions and directions.

As it turned out, it was not all that difficult after all. Before setting out to find her pills I told her to be as explicit as possible and she was exactly that. I went to her cupboard, felt around on the shelf that she had directed me to, to the correct side of the shelf, and to the precise box.

Mom was bang on. She knew exactly where her pills were and she knew how to describe each step of the way to me. Success!

"Each time we raise our voice at someone else we are engaging in bullying! Each time we raise our hands to slap or punch someone else we are also engaging in bullying and each time we engage in actions to either manipulate or force someone else to do what we want we are also engaging in bullying!

There is no room in this world for bullying and each day we fail to take action against bullying it is another day that we allow others to bully us and our kids. Our heroes and role models are the ones who have made us proud; those brave young men and women who gave their lives for us in past wars and those who continue to do so. They are not the ones who choose to be racists and those who believe that their bad behaviour in public is acceptable.

I write and record audio mysteries that are being used at such events as murder mystery evenings as well as at public awareness and team building events. I promote understanding, tolerance, and problem solving and my audio mysteries continue to be broadcasted around the world and you can listen to them anywhere! On the plane or train! Making sure to check my groceries

By now, those of you who read my blogs are probably very aware that grocery shopping for me is my least favorite activity. At the best of times, it is very nerve racking and extremely stressful on me. Please do not get me wrong! The staff at the Metro supermarket are extremely helpful to me but at the end of the day I need to make sure that what I ask for is what I receive.

As a result, I am constantly having to check each item as the good folks at Metro help me out on my shopping trips. I go armed with my shopping list and they take it from there. As they find each desired item, I ask for it to be placed in my hand so that I can inspect and check it out. The Metro staff is used to this and most times I do not even have to ask for them to show me; they do this automatically. It is the only way for me to ensure that I am getting what I ask for.
