Some housekeeping: Sorting out the photos

I have now found a new way to sort out my photos.  I use the wonderful agents at Aira to help me do this.

Aira is an app on my phone.  I use it to call bonded agents in the US and we communicate through our iPhone's cameras.  They can see what I show them and then they are able to identify what I show them.

This is a wonderful technique for me and I am just sorry that I did not start this before now.

I use Aira to help me identify all kinds of things: from photos to cans and boxes and from documents to receipts and so much more.  The identification of photos is the most important to me.

Taking care of business: Propping up the flowers

Written in Spring 2021

Boy, oh boy,  this needed to be done!  I had to ask Nick, my Super, to come to the rescue.

Nick is so very handy and it was not a problem for him to do it for me. Within 10 minutes it was all done.  He trimmed my overgrown plants, then he used sticks to prop them up.  Now they are all nice and neat and ready to continue on their way for summer and fall.

I am just happy that I have them to look after.  Mom had gotten them for me some years ago and she made sure that they were well on their way.

Back to basics: My new calculator

This very useful little gadget is exactly what I wanted.  I ordered it because my previous one decided to give up the ghost after having been with me for many years.

My new calculator is by no means flashy.  It is one with all of the basic functions; subtract, add, multiply, and divide.  Then you can calculate percentages and you can even set the time and an alarm.  Just what I want if I do not want to use any other high tech gadget.

So, this gadget sits on my office desk and waits for me to use it.  Some folks may call me old fashioned but that's quite okay.  I'm quite happy to be old fashioned but I also use the higher tech ones as well.  A mixture of the old and the new.

Fun and not much fun: Dining out in the cold outdoors

It may be fun but at the same time when you are unable to feel your cutlery or you are forced to eat quickly because it is so cold, that's no fun.

This is what happened a few months ago when Stephie and I dined out.  The wind was bitingly cold and it was blowing hard.  Yet we persevered and managed to finish our meal in record time.

It was an early March day and we just wanted to go out there and enjoy some outdoor dining.  Yes, it was a bit of fun but no, it was a bit uncomfortable. Ah yes!  Just another experience.

Not a nice experience: Béarnaise sauce on my jacket

This time I am going to blame it on a very cold day when Stephie and I decided to dine out on the patio of a restaurant.

It was so cold that I could not even feel my fingers gripping my cutlery. So, when I went to eat my eggs Benny, I lost control of my numbing fingers and accordingly the sauce just dripped all over my jacket.  Good thing that Stephie was there to help me clean up and I have to say that it sure helps that when these incidents occur there is someone there that you are comfortable with who would do the needed for you.

At least this is how I feel.  It cuts down on the embarrassment for me. For that day, there was a lot of Béarnaise sauce that dripped down the front of my jacket.  However, after washing it all was well.

A new way: Straightening the table runner

I am just not sure if I could blame this on being vision impaired or maybe I am just a klutz!  Whatever it is, I seem to have always had difficulty laying things straight no matter how hard I have tried.

So, the other day I made an extra effort to make sure that the runner on my dining table was straight.  I had some time on my hands to spare and I did my best to make good on it.

I brought out my Braille ruler and proceeded to carefully measure from end to end.  I took my time and made sure that my ruler did not shift and after a few minutes I am sure that I had it right.  At least I was satisfied that I had.

I recently bought a click ruler which gives me the opportunity to measure up to 36 inches at a time and this ruler is much more sturdy than my other Braille ruler. I am going to use this when I return to my pottery studio.

Joy and happiness! Rain and wind

These are two things that bring so much joy and happiness to me. Their sounds and their smells are absolutely refreshing and simply a tonic for me, especially so at springtime.

The sound of rain falling on roofs!  The smell of rain as it satisfies the thirst of the earth!  The sounds of cars as they splash on the streets during and after a rain shower.  The feel of raindrops falling around me and across my face as I walk.  Ah, yes!  Rain, rain!

Then there is the wind!  Blowing across my face with wonderful refreshing gentleness as I walk. Wind!  Helping to bolster the sound of trees swaying back and forth, leaves blowing around outdoors, and the super fragrances of blooming flowers and fresh cut grass.  Wind!  helping to cool down things outdoors and give us all possibilities and opportunities to welcome and enjoy spring.

Mixed feelings: Getting ready for Easter 2021

I will honestly say that this was an activity of mixed thoughts for me.  On the one hand I enjoyed getting out my cross, Holy Easter ornaments, and my stuffed bunnies, chicks, and ducks along with the Easter eggs.

On the other hand I could not help but feel quite empty and sad because Mom was not here to celebrate with me.  We had to do this via phone and we satisfied ourselves by telling each other what we were doing.  Sandra, my friend and neighbour, and I did get together for a fish dinner and as always our visit was very enjoyable.

Easter has so many meanings for me.  It is the time to celebrate the risen Christ.  To remember Dad as he left us on Easter Saturday in 1988, and to remember my first Easter away from my family when I studied in England.

Ah, yes!  Easter time with so many other memories of celebrating with my family as a kid and being so excited to think of Easter as ushering in springtime.

My beloved little doves: Awaiting my annual balcony visitors

Without fail, they have come to my balcony at the beginning of April since 2016 and I am always so very excited when they arrive.

They are those wonderful doves who come and give birth to their little ones each year.  I never know exactly when they arrive; I only know when they announce themselves with their chattering.

First, I hear the parents chatting with each other every morning.  They call to each other, exchange greetings, and then go into their natural mating activities.  Soon enough, they tell me that they have had their little ones because I hear both parents and little ones chatting and conversing.

Ah, yes!  Newborn doves have arrived and for about the next three weeks there is so much activity on my balcony.  I can't wait to hear them each morning as I sit in my office and listen for them.

They start at around 3 am, and for the next two to three hours they treat me to a concert of songs and sounds.

Then, just as softly as they arrived, they are gone and I am just so sad because I know that I'll just have to wait another year for them to return.

My pride and joy: My blooming orchid

She came into my home in June 2020 and since then she has been blooming constantly.  She does not miss a beat and although I am unable to see her it is enough enjoyment for me to just touch her, water her, and talk to her every day.

She sits on the window in my living room and I water her twice weekly.  She receives the morning sun and she seems to simply love her location.

I really adore plants and my blooming orchid is just one great addition to my home.

The sound of flowing water: Enjoying my fountain

Ah, yes!  Just to hear the sound of water flowing in my fountain is enough to ease the stress and anxiety for me.  It does not matter what time of the year it is, it is a tonic for me!

I usually turn it on, on  a Saturday morning while I do my house work and often times in the evening while I sit and relax after a long day's work.  It is so soothing.  It is so relaxing!  It just helps me to recharge, regroup, and to get ready for bed! Sometimes I even nod off while listening to my beloved fountain!

A new challenge: Keeping track of FedEx documents

The need to keep track of FedEx documents has become an important task for me; especially so when it pertains to sending and receiving legal documents.

I need to make sure that they are in a safe place and, because they are in printed format, it is even more important for me to know exactly where I have put them.

So, I carefully label them, and then file them in logical locations.

Ah, yes!  The world of printed documents for a blind or vision impaired person to work with.  No way around this; it is as it is!

So on I go and I take everything in stride.

A nice hobby:My continuing enjoyment of chess

I do not regret having decided to continue playing chess.  And I am extremely grateful to the Braille Chess association in Britain for welcoming me, and helping me to improve my game. A special thanks to Mark Kirkham, my coach.

I think that my game has improved a lot but there is always a lot of room for improvement.  Over the next few months I will be doubling my efforts to play more games via email and I may even look for games on the lichess website.

Just being lazy: A bigger effort to exercise

I know; I know!  It is so very important to keep up with my daily exercises and I have been doing better over the past few months.  I spend about 25 minutes daily doing my stretches, twists and bends, and my chair cycling.

It is hard going but I am bound and determined to make this work.  It is working for now.  So, here's wishing me continued exercising.
