Sweet little voices: Crickets are here

And yes!  They are back, chirping loud and clear!  They start at around 6 pm and usually sign off at around 6 am.

I always admire how they sing in unison.  I am not sure how many of them there are but there must be a few!

I simply love to hear them at night when I retire to bed.  They are somehow soothing and refreshing. I sure admire how they start at the same time every evening, stop at the same time every morning, and you can set your clock by them.  Come rain or shine they are always here.

A funny moment: When the kettle flipped its lid

I have to admit that this was, indeed, very funny.  I really did not pay much attention until I noticed 2 things.

First, the kettle was taking a bit too long to boil its water. Then, I noticed that the sound of the kettle boiling was a bit odd. So, I decided to investigate and presto!

The lid of the kettle was up; the kettle was not closed! What a relief for me as I figured it out. I closed the lid and everything was fine from there on in.

Now, were I sighted, I would have seen this immediately.

Dealing with a surprise: When the blackout came

It was totally unexpected and when it came the entire place went dead silent.  Not being able to see when the lights went out I knew that it had come upon us because my fridge and my TV had been making loud sounds.  Yes, loud sounds and then everything went dead silent.  Thank goodness that my computer was off.

I sat there and hoped that the electricity would soon return but it did not.  It lasted for a few hours and during that time I took advantage of the quiet time to just relax, recharge, and regenerate.  Truth be told, I enjoyed the down time and when the electricity did finally return I had to fight to get my cable back up and running.

Joy and happiness! Rain and wind

These are two things that bring so much joy and happiness to me. Their sounds and their smells are absolutely refreshing and simply a tonic for me, especially so at springtime.

The sound of rain falling on roofs!  The smell of rain as it satisfies the thirst of the earth!  The sounds of cars as they splash on the streets during and after a rain shower.  The feel of raindrops falling around me and across my face as I walk.  Ah, yes!  Rain, rain!

Then there is the wind!  Blowing across my face with wonderful refreshing gentleness as I walk. Wind!  Helping to bolster the sound of trees swaying back and forth, leaves blowing around outdoors, and the super fragrances of blooming flowers and fresh cut grass.  Wind!  helping to cool down things outdoors and give us all possibilities and opportunities to welcome and enjoy spring.

My beloved little doves: Awaiting my annual balcony visitors

Without fail, they have come to my balcony at the beginning of April since 2016 and I am always so very excited when they arrive.

They are those wonderful doves who come and give birth to their little ones each year.  I never know exactly when they arrive; I only know when they announce themselves with their chattering.

First, I hear the parents chatting with each other every morning.  They call to each other, exchange greetings, and then go into their natural mating activities.  Soon enough, they tell me that they have had their little ones because I hear both parents and little ones chatting and conversing.

Ah, yes!  Newborn doves have arrived and for about the next three weeks there is so much activity on my balcony.  I can't wait to hear them each morning as I sit in my office and listen for them.

They start at around 3 am, and for the next two to three hours they treat me to a concert of songs and sounds.

Then, just as softly as they arrived, they are gone and I am just so sad because I know that I'll just have to wait another year for them to return.

Christmas Holiday Thoughts

What would Christmas be without those warm welcoming thoughts to keep me company? My sight may have deserted me but I can still visualize the decorations!

The images of Christmas trees all decked out with colourful winking lights, presents piled high under the tree, and oh yes! The star sitting proudly at the top.

The little manger in the corner of my living room with all of the figures standing at attention and Mary cradling the Baby Jesus in her arms and Joseph close by.

Images of malls all decorated with store fronts showing off toys, clothes for the holiday season, and baked goods. People rushing around with arms filled with all sorts of shapes and sizes of parcels. Kids running around everywhere.

Then let's not forget the smells and sounds of the Christmas season. All good everywhere. These are my cherished thoughts as I welcome Christmas 2020 and not even this cursed Covid is going to spoil my mood!

I'd like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas! Happy holidays! But most of all! A 2021 that will bring us lots of blessings, good things, and hopes and dreams to be fulfilled.

Merry Christmas!

Happy Holidays!

Joyeux Noèl!

Feliz Navidad!

Buon Natale!

Happy Hanukkah!

My favourite songster visitors: The doves are back

They're back! My favourite little songsters! Every year and some time in April, more towards the beginning of April, they arrive at my office balcony and there they lay their eggs. The eggs hatch and parents and little ones
stay for a few weeks and then they are off for other parts!

This annual event probably started way back in 2012 and each year they have never failed to make my balcony their birthing centre. I am always so very excited whenever I hear their arrival, and how do I know that they have
arrived? Because apart from expecting them, I hear them calling to each other early on mornings and this lasts for a few days. Then I hear the little ones interacting with their parents and this is when I know that the young ones
have arrived.

Parents and kids enrich my early morning hours for a few weeks and then, as easily as they have come, they are gone. That's my typical April morning activity!

My beloved home street: Mom's view of Tragarete Road

Her view is nice and simple: a somewhat exciting and noisy street when we were growing up, to one today that is a lot quieter. No nightly activities and no one fighting or dogs chasing each other anymore.

Truth be told, I somewhat miss the dogs barking and playing on the pavements. I miss the folks interacting with each other, and I sure miss the smells of baking goodies.

There used to be a cinema when we were kids but that, too, is gone and now it has been replaced by a night club where music is nothing but noise and booming beats ringing out.  The cars still travel down our beloved Tragarete Rd but there are not as many.  Even the gas station at the corner is much quieter now.

I guess as they say: things should not be expected to remain the same forever.  Things change and times change and this is our beloved Tragarete Road today.

Fondest memories forever: Remembering Tragarete Rd

Ah yes!  The smells and sounds of the street on which I grew up!  I'll never forget you, my beloved Tragarete Rd!  With all of your interesting happenings at night, traffic during the day, and horns blaring, kids walking and laughing, and dogs barking and chasing each other.

I shall always remember Craig pontificating every night from his soap box and me listening to him before falling asleep.  The smells of the bakery as it baked all kinds of cakes and breads.  Kids laughing and shouting as they walked home from school, and oh yes!  The dogs barking and chasing each other and the overly happy folks who had a bit too much to drink at night.

Believe it or not, Tragarete Rd was once a very quiet street but today it has blossomed into a main thoroughfare.  All kinds of traffic rumble down its landscape on a daily basis and at night Tragarete Rd does not sleep, unlike the good old days when everything halted between 11 pm and 5 am.

Then there was Christmas time!  Tragarete Rd was filled with the sounds of firecrackers going off!  Kids walking and singing!  The fragrant scent of baking goods, and so very much more!

A different experience: Sue's different car

I always seem to know when Sue has pulled up at my driveway in her car.  For some reason her car makes a unique noise when it arrives and I am right there to hear it.

However, on this particular day she fooled me when she arrived in her mom’s car.  I had to smile to myself when she called out to me when she arrived and she was so quick to see the surprised expression on my face.

I smiled to myself as I walked towards her.  Such a funny experience.

I am now used to it: Mom's cell phone

It is a very simple one and one can say that it is very old fashioned in its make up.  Just the necessary buttons.  No tapping in order to get to anything.

This is the way that Mom likes it. You just need to get used to the small buttons and you can only dial out, receive calls, and check your remaining balance.  Music punctuates the turning on and turning off of the phone and then notifications are punctuated by the normal audio notification.

Mom's cell does not talk but I am used to this.  In other words, there is no voice-over to guide me but I can hear the buttons emit a sound as I press them and all of the other things I can deal with through sound.

It took me a bit to get used to this little gem but now I am okay.  That's Mom's cell!

Feelings forever: The Christmas feeling

Christmas for me is simply a plethora of feelings, emotions, and so much more.  Christmas for me is a season where so many memories race across my mind.  I can tell you that Christmas for me can be viewed in two different ways: as someone who has precious little vision and as one who once upon a time had enough vision to see so much.

When I had enough vision to see many things, I could appreciate the flickering candles in Church, the flashing colored lights as I skated around an outdoor rink, crowded streets with scurrying shoppers, Christmas trees loaded with decorations and presents piled high beneath, tables loaded with dishes of food, and of course!  Santa Claus!  I used to spend so much time in the toy departments admiring the dolls and doll houses.  Drawing sets and coloring books.  I used to help decorate the house and always enjoyed putting up the angels, the lights, and most of all the manger with all of the figures.

Now that my vision has dwindled to almost nothing, I have all of these memories to bolster my enjoyment of Christmas. In addition, I use my senses of sound and smell to help me continue enjoying.  Fragrances of burning firewood, pine, baking cookies, and turkey and pork all help me to conjure up pictures and images of years gone by.  Sounds of bells, kids laughing, Santa Claus ho ho hoing, and the scraping of blades on ice add to my happy memories.  You see, I have so many ways to recreate, reproduce, and make new memories.

Christmas as a blind person could be really interesting.  So much to enjoy and so much to share with others.  Christmas through the eyes of a blind person could be a very different perspective for many.  You can learn more by visiting www.acb.org.

One of my favorite memories: Granny's special signal

I can still remember her signal as clear as day and truth be told it was nothing more than Granny knocking her ring against the pipe of our banister as she ascended the stairs to our home.

I can't begin to tell you how excited I would become whenever I heard the sound of her ring echoing upwards as she ascended the stairs. It meant that Granny was home once more after having been away for a wee bit and now she and I could enjoy each others' company.

Talk about someone who taught me so much and that was my beloved Granny! She was patient, gentle, but firm.  She taught, guided, and more often than not she pushed me to be a better person.

I was not always the best of students but Lord only knows how hard I tried. I know that Granny was very proud of me because of her wonderful graduation card that she sent me when I graduated from university, and when Mom found a graduation photo of me among her papers after she had passed on!

I am awfully proud to have had you for my granny and I thank you for all that you gave to me.  Until we meet again!

Memories forever: My childhood summer holidays

Many may say that memories of one's childhood summer holidays would probably fall into the ordinary category but I would say that they fell into the extra special category.  You see, these are memories of holidays spent with family and dogs.  Memories that were created when I had very limited vision but at the same time they were memories created with lots of time to allow my imagination to wonder, roam, and grow.

Ah, yes!  being able to think and create stories in my head as I lay there at night listening to the waves break upon the sandy shore.  Being able to actually memorize some of them as I tossed and turned, the crickets sang and the dogs walked back and forth along the floor of our beach house and all this just before sleep grabbed a hold of me.

Being able to plan exciting mysteries in my head while the mosquitoes buzzed and the fresh sea breeze wafted freely through a quiet house.

Being able to create sand castles and mountains on the sandy beach, construct pools of all shapes and sizes, dig for clams, and enjoy the surf and warm Caribbean water while thinking about what I wanted to be when I grew up.

Being able to simply sit there and allow myself to be just another child among my brothers and cousins while they read to me, played marbles with me, and then we would go out and play all kinds of games such as hide and seek, cricket, football, and then the lagoon activities.

Ah, yes!  Those cherished memories of my childhood summer holidays.

One of my favorite things to do: Listening to the sounds of spring

This is just one of my favourite things to do whenever I can spare a moment.  Ah yes!  Spring!  A breath of fresh air and so good for the cleansing of my soul!

Those sweet little birds with voices as pure as a breeze in a bottle!  They can reach any note on your piano and exceed any octave.  They can hold a beat for longer than most and their lilts are so filled with feeling and love.

Then there is the sound of fast flowing water as it gushes down a drain, a river, or at your feet as you walk in the rain.  So free, without any inhibition.

The sound of raindrops beating down on the panes of my windows.  Cars squishing along as they drive on rain soaked streets.  Gentle breezes rustling through the trees, and then at night, the insect world coming alive.

Fr. Knolly Knox

I can honestly say that this wonderful friend of the family had something that was truly unique to me. His voice certainly matched his qualities. If you were to ask me to describe this gentle priest, I would say that his voice told it all.

At one time I did have enough vision to see what he looked like but, truth be told, I used to love to listen to his soft and gentle voice and this told me everything that I needed to know. Fr. Knolly's voice was an audio description of the man himself and there are not many people that I could honestly say this about. I do not even know if it is at all possible to be able to listen to a voice and then develop a profile of their personality from it. Yet for Fr. Knolly, this is how I envisioned him.

His voice was soft, gentle, crisp, and clear. His voice was almost always calm and emitted tones of humor, warmth, and sincerity. This is how I shall always remember him.

I will always think of him with a smile, a twinkle in his eyes, and a brisk step to his walk. I was always able to distinguish his footsteps as he used to come bounding up the stairs of our home. They were quick easy steps.

Rest in peace Fr. Knolly!

This is a personal message from author Donna Jodhan
"If you either are or have been a victim of crime, violence, abuse, or bullying, and if you are simply tired of being bombarded with audios and scenes of the above, then I am asking for your support. I have written and recorded audio mysteries that are completely void of vivid descriptions of sex, crime, and violence because I firmly believe that it is time for us to use the spoken word to help influence our kids to start listening to content that is clean and healthy. By doing this we can all do our part to tackle crime in a positive and meaningful way and it only costs pennies per day.Visit my online store at www.donnajodhan.com/store.html.
I thank you and your kids will also thank you!"

Identification of the birds

Believe it or not, every species of birds has its own unique sound and as a child I learned this from my parents and Granny. I have always been fascinated by the various sounds of birds and so as a child I took a particular interest in their sounds.

Most kids would probably not take the time to pay attention to the sounds of birds but I did and as a child who had very limited vision, I derived so much joy in simply listening to them. I could conjure up their voices in my mind whenever I wanted and when I had enough vision to see what they looked like, then I was just like a kid in a candy store matching each bird to their sound.

Some birds have soft voices. Others have loud and boisterous voices. Some sing short and sweet while others pour forth long and lilting songs. I think that each bird is simply unique when it comes to how they sing. I simply love them all.

When next you are out in your garden, just sit for a few minutes and listen to those wondrous birds. They never ask for much except that you give them some scraps as often as you remember.

Identifying my dogs by their voices

Yes indeed! They each had a very unique voice according to the sound in my ears. Their growls and barks were unique and this is how I identified them whenever they were out of my range.

Just like their personalities, each dog's voice was different. Yella had a soft but confident voice and bark. Tiger was much louder and braver. Lion was loud but tinged with timidity. Boyo's bark was medium to loud but tinged with some assuredness and Brownie's bark was simply loud and proud.

Each dog used their voice in a uniquely different way and each barked at various times for various reasons. It almost always used to amaze my family how I could identify our dogs whenever they were out and about. I knew each voice like the back of my hand and I even knew their growls and could easily distinguish them.

I did not have enough vision as a child to distinguish my dogs by sight so I had to depend on their voices. Of course whenever they were within my reach I had no difficulty distinguishing them.

Music and color

This is how I manage to spark my imagination whenever I sit down to write my detective stories or, for that matter, anything else. I think of a particular sound or song and then I build my creations by inserting color into this mix. It may sound crazy to you but trust me when I tell you that it works for me.

So, this is how it works. When I sit down to write one of my audio mysteries, I allow my imagination to think of either a sound or song. My imagination wanders around and searches far and wide. Most times I reject the first and second recommendations from my imagination, but it really does not take a long time before my imagination comes up with something for me that I like.

The song could range from anything such as a piano piece to a ballad by Andy Williams, Engelbert Humperdinck, Whitney Houston, or even Donny Osmond, Michael Jackson, or Mariah Carey. The sound could be anything from birds singing to water flowing, cars racing or children laughing.

After I have chosen my song or sound, I next move to filling in the scene in my mind with color and this is something that is very hard to explain. Finally the text of the scene, and I build this with memories or creations of my own. This is how I match music and color.
