Frustrating moments: When Zoom does not work

When Zoom works it works like a charm, but when it does not, then nothing doing.

I discovered this on my recent trip to the Caribbean.  You see, I had to pick and choose the times of the day very carefully when it came to scheduling Zoom meetings in the neck of the woods where I was located.

Between 10 a.m. and noon worked well followed by anytime after 3 p.m.  However, any other times of the day and I ran into tons of difficulties.

For the most part, whenever I was successful in connecting the reception was quite acceptable, but there were several times when clarity of voices was a problem.

Zoom continues to help me stay engaged with my associates and friends and is proving to be very effective in helping to keep me in the loop.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly sight-loss coach and accessibility advisor, wishing you a terrific day.

Not very fond of them: Lizards in my way

I can honestly say that I do not like them and they probably do not like me.  Each time I visit Mom in the Caribbean, I have to put up with them.

They simply love to disturb me whenever I am lying on the couch in Mom’s living room or they come early in the morning to disturb my sleep.  No, I cannot see them but they make me aware of their presence when they make loud clapping sounds and they do this by coming very close to my head.

If I am quick enough I either shout at them or clap my hands and they just run away.  They crawl along walls and jump from wall to wall.  They are very fast and although Mom keeps telling me that they are harmless, I still do not appreciate their presence.

Ah, yes!  Just another irritant for me to overcome.

Christmas is for me no matter where I am

Yes!  You got it right!  You heard me correctly!  No matter where I am and no matter what I'm doing!  Christmas is for me!

I could be spending it in Canada where the winters are icy, the snow is falling, the winds are howling, and I could practically hear Santa chuckling. Christmas is for me!  Or I could be spending it in the sunny Caribbean where Santa could be seen in either a jeep, standing in an open truck, or even on a motorcycle. Christmas is for me!  No matter where I am, this very special time of the year is for me!

There are some very special things that many parts of the world share in common: the birth of Jesus, gift giving, greeting each other, Christmas goodies, toys, and the singing of Christmas songs and carols!  So many things in common for us to share!

No matter where I am, all of these things will be with me!  From a snowy winter with skaters skating on an icy rink with Christmas lights winking in the background and bystanders drinking hot chocolate, to a deep blue sea with swimmers swimming lazily under the watch of bright blue skies. Christmas will always be the same!  It is not where I will happen to be!  It is all about the spirit of Christmas!  Remembering what Christmas really means to me!  The giving, the greeting, the joy, the special hopes and wishes for others. But most important of all,  remembering to let the Child Jesus into my heart and to let him stay with me all year through!

Quoting from a popular Christmas carol:  "The secret of Christmas is not what you do at Christmas time! But the Christmas things you do all year through."

I'm Donna J. Jodhan wishing you a wonderful Christmas and the very best for the new year.

Memories forever: My childhood summer holidays

Many may say that memories of one's childhood summer holidays would probably fall into the ordinary category but I would say that they fell into the extra special category.  You see, these are memories of holidays spent with family and dogs.  Memories that were created when I had very limited vision but at the same time they were memories created with lots of time to allow my imagination to wonder, roam, and grow.

Ah, yes!  being able to think and create stories in my head as I lay there at night listening to the waves break upon the sandy shore.  Being able to actually memorize some of them as I tossed and turned, the crickets sang and the dogs walked back and forth along the floor of our beach house and all this just before sleep grabbed a hold of me.

Being able to plan exciting mysteries in my head while the mosquitoes buzzed and the fresh sea breeze wafted freely through a quiet house.

Being able to create sand castles and mountains on the sandy beach, construct pools of all shapes and sizes, dig for clams, and enjoy the surf and warm Caribbean water while thinking about what I wanted to be when I grew up.

Being able to simply sit there and allow myself to be just another child among my brothers and cousins while they read to me, played marbles with me, and then we would go out and play all kinds of games such as hide and seek, cricket, football, and then the lagoon activities.

Ah, yes!  Those cherished memories of my childhood summer holidays.

Where is Peepers?

He is my favorite little cricket. He comes out every evening on my mom's patio and as Mom and I sit eating our dinner. He chirps, hops around, and entertains us all the way. The interesting thing about little Peepers is that Mom has never really seen what he looks like because of his size and his agility, so we both have to depend on our imaginations to figure out what he looks like.

I met Peepers, so to speak, about two years ago and each summer when I visit my mom in the Caribbean I meet him. He is such a joy! His little voice practically lilts and is as pure as an angel's song.

The only way that we can tell where Peepers is at any given time is when he chirps. He reminds me of the invisible detective. That's my little Peepers, my pride and my joy!

Remembering the coconut trees

Ah yes! This was one of my most cherished childhood memories, those tall graceful coconut trees swaying vigorously in the cool Caribbean breezes.

They were there to form a tunnel as we drove through on our way to Mayaro. They were there standing tall in front of our beach house, swaying in the wind. They were there for me to swing on and they were there for me to take advantage of as I sat in their lowest branches relaxing and taking in the fresh sea air.

No one could ever take those memories away from me. No one could ever convince me that those tall graceful trees were not there for me to enjoy, touch, smell, and play with. They were for me and despite my limited vision in those days, I still knew what they looked like.

I could never figure out whether or not birds lived in their branches. All I knew then is that their delicious coconuts were always filled with sweet water and yummy jelly.
