Yes indeed! The cold indoors!

Braving the cold indoors. In the normal scheme of things, it should be braving the cold outdoors but when the cold winds come earlier than expected, this is what it is.  

When I start to feel cold, I reach for my favourite warm clothes and slip them on. Nothing too much to be concerned about.

Just for me to remember that every now and then these times will sneak up on me.

Driving in bad weather: Lots of rain and bad weather

Whenever I am driving with anyone in bad weather, especially when it is rain, I get very anxious and nervous. If the bad weather starts before I begin my drive with a friend or family member, I often cancel my trip.

On this day, when Stephie and I drove to a medical clinic, this was the case. So much rain and poor Stephie could barely see her way.

I prayed very hard, kept talking to Stephie and thank goodness she is a terrific driver and did not panic.  The good Lord was with us that awful day.

Getting nice and comfy

 There is nothing better than being able to get nice and comfy on a cold evening during the Christmas holiday season!  When the wind is banging against the windows, snow is softly falling outside, and there is a warm crackling fire just waiting for you to come close.

You slip on a nice warm pair of socks, gather your favourite drink along with some Christmas cookies and then you find your favourite comfy chair and draw near to the fire.

Ah, yes!  Just smell that crackling fire burning!  Listen to it crackling, and now you are ready to just sit and either read a book or turn on your TV and switch to one of your favourite channels that is about to show a Christmas movie.  Or maybe it will be a Christmas show.

Whatever it is, it is time to just kick back and forget about all of the bad news going on around you!  Time to take some time for yourself!  To just relax, recharge, and refresh!  Time for you to say to yourself,  “Well done” and now it is time to reward yourself for a year where you have worked hard to help make this world a bit better.

So now, just kick back and enjoy this evening!  Watch the flames dance in front of you and savour your hot drink and Christmas cookies!

I'd like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas! Happy holidays! But most of all, a 2023 that will bring us lots of blessings, good things, and hopes and dreams to be fulfilled.

Fun and not much fun: Dining out in the cold outdoors

It may be fun but at the same time when you are unable to feel your cutlery or you are forced to eat quickly because it is so cold, that's no fun.

This is what happened a few months ago when Stephie and I dined out.  The wind was bitingly cold and it was blowing hard.  Yet we persevered and managed to finish our meal in record time.

It was an early March day and we just wanted to go out there and enjoy some outdoor dining.  Yes, it was a bit of fun but no, it was a bit uncomfortable. Ah yes!  Just another experience.

A historic day: At the Senate Standing Committee hearing

I don’t think that I will ever forget this day: a historical one for me.

Weather-wise, it was a miserable day as Sue drove me to the studio. The rain was pouring and for the good driver that she is, she  got me there on time and safely.

We had to wait for a bit but finally, when I was seated next to the Honourable David Omley, past Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, I was ready to roll as they say!

I hope that I did a good job with my presentation but unfortunately I developed a coughing fit right after I was finished with my presentation and had to take a two minute break. David was very helpful as he went out and fetched Sue who brought me some water. That helped and saved the day for me.

I was really glad that the Honourable David was there beside me as he helped to make things more comfortable and much less stressful.  As a person with a vision impairment, it is always uncomfortable when I sit in a room with cameras facing me and others can see me but, in turn, I cannot see them.

My new addition: Planting my new anthurium

 
After purchasing my lovely lavender plant, I decided to complete my plant purchases for spring 2019 with the addition of an anthurium plant.  I was so happy to bring her home on a bitterly cold winter's day and after putting her into her new pot, I decided to place her in front of my patio door. 

This was in late February of 2019 and fast forward to the end of May and she is thriving.  Her leaves are thick and wide.  She is spreading out and each day I pay her a brief visit to check on her. 

I water her once weekly and I know that she will be with me for a very long time.  She has enriched my home and it is always so enjoyable for me to have plants around me.

Not too happy: When the weather prevents me

You can say that I feel like a fish out of water whenever the weather prevents me from going outdoors. I miss the fresh cool air. Also the warm sun, the birds singing, and the fragrance of flowers and fresh-cut green grass.

You see, almost all of my five senses suffer anytime the weather prevents me from going outdoors.

No denial; I love to hear the raindrops drumming on my windows and on rooftops but it is even better whenever I can feel them on my jacket or even hear the cars driving by as they splash in puddles.

There is nothing better than being able to smell freshness all around me after a downpour. Ah, yes! Just to smell the earth is like a tonic to me!

Anxious times: Downtown at my Apple exam

  

In November 2018 I traveled to downtown Toronto with my friend Gabriella to take my ACSP exam.  It was a cold, blustery day in mid fall as we walked quickly towards the exam centre and as we walked I was ever so grateful that Gabriella was with me.

I was walking in unfamiliar territory and everything seemed so very confusing and a bit intimidating to me and despite my not being able to see those tall, forbidding buildings around me I could only imagine what they looked like given that I used my imagination to conjure up images.

Having previously had enough vision to see those imposing buildings enabled me to use my imagination.  The winds nipped at my coat as I hurried along beside Gabriella and at times I could actually feel my innermost thoughts starting to freeze up.

The walk from the underground parking lot took about 10 minutes and I was so very relieved when we got to the building.  It did not prevent me from shivering inwardly and I could only hope that I would not need to travel here again in a hurry.

For someone who is vision impaired, it is often a real challenge when they are required to walk in areas that are unfamiliar and then they need to trust the one guiding them.  Quite an experience.

Memories of good old England: Easter in England

Looking back on this particular time, I can honestly say that it was one of the finest experiences for me.  I had the opportunity to learn so much more about my religion.  I got to understand and learn so much more about the meaning of Good Friday and I was privileged to have been able to take part in those special Easter celebrations.

The nuns at the Grange were very kind to Celia and me.  They included us in all of their events and we were treated so very well.  It was a quiet time but I truly loved it and I am grateful for having had this opportunity.

The weather was a typical British springtime and the temps were just right. The birds were singing and the flowers smelled so heavenly.

We got more Easter eggs than we ever hoped for, from Uncle Lance and Georgie to Pat Quinn, Miss Chambers, and the nuns! I shall always remember!

My perspective: Buses and buses

There are buses and then there are buses and for someone who is vision-impaired, I need to keep this in mind whenever I travel.

The city buses are usually a bit narrow with front and back doors for entering and exiting.  The seats in my city are comfortable enough but there are some that face forward, others that face backward, single seats, bench seats, and then double seats.  Then there are the poles for you to hang on to on those crowded days.  Winter travel on these buses is made comfortable and bearable with adequate heating but in the summer the windows need to be opened to let in the fresh air.  There is no air conditioning.

Then there are those buses that travel between cities: from city to city or even province to province.  These are the more comfortable ones because of the length of their trips.  They are equipped with bathrooms at the back of the bus and very comfortable seats.  In the winter they are well heated and during the summer they are adequately air conditioned.  No worries about not being able to find a seat.

These buses are clean, comfortable, and well maintained, just like the city buses.  What is the difference between the two types of buses. you may be asking?

You never have to fight for a seat on the buses that take you from city to city or from province to province.

Always in my heart: The day I left Montreal

This is a day that shall forever remain firmly imprinted on my mind. Because it was the day that a small part of my heart died!  The day that I said a sad and silent farewell to the place that I shall always call home! However, I promised to return as often as I could.

Ah, yes!  Montreal!  And as the Air Canada plane rose slowly into the air, I looked through the window and down at the rapidly disappearing city.  Cars driving along the highway, homes looking like tiny dots, and snow and grass all intermingled as the day before we had had a terrible storm!  My tears rolled swiftly down my cheeks as I looked down and increased as I looked upwards and outwards to see a pale blue fall sky looking back at me.

It was a typical fall day with the sun doing its best to smile and the biting fall air nipping at my clothes as I got into the car and drove with Betty Tate to the airport.  Too late, no!  I had made my decision but I knew that I would be back soon to visit!

So many memories that are forever stored away in my memory bank.  So many things to remember and cherish!  This is the city where I found myself and obtained my vision!  Ah, yes!  Pictures to fill my scrap books for a lifetime and beyond!

Oh Montreal! My home forever! Remembering Montreal

Oh, my beautiful and beloved Montreal!  Marvelous!  Sweet!  My heart shall forever belong to you and you shall forever remain in my heart!

This is the city where I discovered myself, both with functional and with little sight.  I learned so much through you!  I found myself and my identity!

From ice skating and snow banks to busy streets, stores, and restaurants! From lush green grass and blooming flowers to peaceful lakes and from summer to winter and spring to fall!

How could I ever forget learning how to navigate those metros with very little sight and then just standing there taking in all of those beautiful sights when I acquired my functional vision!  Skiing with very little vision!  Learning to play basketball and broom ball!  Going shopping with my friends, especially Char, my best friend!

How could I ever forget the night when Marion promised me that when I received my new cornea she would take me to see the lights of Montreal and she never disappointed me!  Those lights of the City of Montreal!  How could I ever dare to forget!

The cold winter days walking to classes with my jacket zipped right up to my chin!  The fall days walking among the falling leaves and listening to my feet crunching against them!  The beautiful spring days enjoying the fresh air and fragrances of flowers as I walked and those long lingering days on a tandem bike or listening to baseball games on my radio!

This was my beautiful Montreal and shall forever be my beautiful Montreal!

Just trying to envision: Imagining the plane seeking a vacant gate

That is exactly what I had to do as I sat waiting for my plane to land in Toronto.

This had been a very long flight from Ottawa to Toronto and as we landed we were told that it would take a few minutes for the pilot to find a vacant gate.

Bad weather had played havoc with our flight and we had been delayed for over three hours at Ottawa's airport and we had to wait for the storms to blow by before taking off.  Then, when we landed in Toronto, we had to wait for a free gate for the plane to be parked.

Most people sitting in window seats were looking out to see what they could see, but for me I had to use my imagination.  Not sure how close my imagination came to reality but here is what I imagined.

A gigantic plane moving slowly along a huge strip looking for some sort of parking lot.  Each parking lot is huge and in order for our plane to be able to enter the lot it has to ensure that there is no other plane there.

Everything is huge and looks so imposing but the pilot knows exactly what he is doing and we all need to be patient.

A great memory: At the photo shoot

In May 2016 I experienced my very first photo shoot and as someone who is used to determining where I go and how I get there, this was quite an experience for me.  This was the Accessible Media Inc's photo shoot day.

The staff was extremely good when it came to giving me directions as to where I needed to sit or stand, how I needed to position my body, and how to position my head and whether or not I needed to smile or laugh.  The shoot consisted of my having to sit, stand, walk, and at times do a quick run through the park.

The weather definitely cooperated with us as the sun shone beautifully, the temps were extremely pleasant, and the session in the park was most enjoyable.

I especially loved listening to the birds and being able to sniff the fresh cool air and enjoyed hearing the young kids around me playing and shouting nearby.  They were having their break at the same time as we were doing our shoot.

I also met new people and was lucky enough to meet Terry Bray, someone that I had not seen in so many years.  All in all a great day away from the pressures of work.

Running through the rain

In the fall of 2015 I had a very interesting experience when I had to run through the rain with my friend, Gabriella, as we rushed along to a government building in downtown Toronto.

We were on a mission!  We had to get there so that I could sign an affidavit.  It was pouring buckets as we ran.

Truth be told, I enjoyed the experience but the sobering reality was I had to trust Gabriella completely to get me through the rain and navigate with me safely.  I have known this wonderful lady for more than half my life so there was not a problem.

It just seemed to me as if I was giving permission to my friend to lead me through unknown territory, so to speak.  It truly felt like being guided around puddles, across busy streets, along crowded sidewalks, and all while the rain poured down over us.

Remembering the coconut trees

Ah yes! This was one of my most cherished childhood memories, those tall graceful coconut trees swaying vigorously in the cool Caribbean breezes.

They were there to form a tunnel as we drove through on our way to Mayaro. They were there standing tall in front of our beach house, swaying in the wind. They were there for me to swing on and they were there for me to take advantage of as I sat in their lowest branches relaxing and taking in the fresh sea air.

No one could ever take those memories away from me. No one could ever convince me that those tall graceful trees were not there for me to enjoy, touch, smell, and play with. They were for me and despite my limited vision in those days, I still knew what they looked like.

I could never figure out whether or not birds lived in their branches. All I knew then is that their delicious coconuts were always filled with sweet water and yummy jelly.

How I can tell when rain is coming

Now, you may be thinking that I must be a farmer in my own right but this is not the case. It is a very simple trick that I learned in grade school. Our teachers taught it to us and almost all of the time it works.

It goes like this. You need to pay attention to the smells around you, especially so to an earth-like smell. It is somewhat difficult for me to describe but the best that I can do is to say that it is an earth-like smell.

When this smell is detected you can bet the barn that rain is not very far behind. For many blind persons, and including me, our sense of smell is probably more acute than the mainstream person so it is often easier for us to detect this smell before others around us.

For whereas a sighted person can look out at the skies and see dark clouds approaching, blind persons would have to depend on other cues and one of my favorite and most reliable ones is that well-known earth-like smell. Or, to be more precise, an earthy smell.
