That's a part of condo living! Outside my elevator

Oh yes, just another challenge for me to overcome. Or should I say that it’s just another obstacle course.

Good thing that my cane skills were up to the task. For if they were not then I would probably be injured.

My cane found the large boxes of supplies outside my elevator. The workmen had left them there as they continued to work on our hallways.

But Jen in the management office also came to my rescue. She called a short time after I had encountered the boxes. All in a day’s life for me and everything helps.

No choice! My new wallet

It never fails!  Every time I purchase a new purse or wallet I have to take time to familiarize myself with the new compartments.

Yes!  Where to put my dollar bills?
Where to put my credit cards?
Where to put other id cards?
Then to get used to it all.

It’s the same for my new purse. Decisions! Decisions!  Where to put my necessities and what to leave behind so that my purse does not become overloaded.

No different for anyone, but for me as a vision-impaired person?  Just need to be more methodical!

How frustrating! No instructions in the box

It certainly does not help whenever a company forgets to include instructions in a box when shipping. Or maybe there are no instructions?

Normally, I expect either a CD, Braille instructions if I am lucky, or maybe they send the product along and include the instructions as a built-in file?

All well and good, but for me as a vision-impaired person, it would certainly help to have other types of instructions included.

I just wonder that not too many companies stop and think about this.

I need to speak out: I do not need a legal guardian

For the life of me, I still continue to encounter persons from the medical profession who believe that in order for me to function as a vision-impaired person, and to live a normal life, I somehow need a legal guardian to make decisions for me.

Sometimes I understand why this attitude would continue to persist as it may come out of a cultural background, but on the other hand it sure tells me that we have a lot of work to do when it comes to building awareness and educating those in the medical profession.

A nifty little gadget: Using my light detector to discover

Oh boy, and how things have changed so much over the last few years. Now I have the choice of either using an app or a stand alone gadget. And this is what I did recently, I preferred to use my stand alone gadget to detect light.

I needed to determine if the bulbs in my office were lighting up. So, I went to work to pull out my nifty little light detector. I turned it on and waited for it to tell me if there was light. It did not buzz so I knew that there was no light.

I could have used an app on my I device to do the same thing but this worked just fine.

What a relief! My cleaned up storage cupboard

I can tell you that this was a very long time in coming and I have to thank Mom, Stephanie, and Nick for helping with this. For far too long everything in my storage cupboard was packed haphazardly, and now it is packed neatly and everything is orderly and organized in a semblance of logic.

No more having to scratch my head when looking for anything.
No more having to sort through all kinds of containers to find a specific container.
No more having to constantly be throwing out unwanted stuff.
As a vision-impaired person, it is so very important for me to be able to find what I seek and in a timely manner.

Unable to see but I imagined! Videos from Lizbet

This is one time when I really could have done with some audio description. Yes, I knew the general theme of the videos but I was missing the details. The videos were of Auntie Margaret’s funeral at the church and then at the graveyard. I heard music and voices but that was it.

So, I was left to conjure up my own images. Just another day’s challenge.

Frustration! When I pulled out the wrong container

It never fails and it does not matter how careful I am or how organized I strive to be. Yes!  It’s all about being able to pull out what I am seeking from my freezer.

This day was no different. I thought I was pulling out ground beef but what did I pull out? A container of mashed potatoes.

Not being able to really see what I am pulling out only makes things more interesting and this time my sense of smell failed me miserably.

Engaging and learning: Talking to the painter

This was a very interesting experience for me. I knew that the painter was working in the hallway because I could hear him moving around and smell his paint.

So, I exited my condo and started to walk gingerly down the hall as I had an appointment to keep. He saw me immediately and came sauntering towards me. I did not need to explain that I was vision impaired.

He guided me expertly past his spot and to the elevator, chatting with me as we went. I learned from him that he would be working in the hallway for a few hours and would probably still be there when I returned.

Not a problem.  It was great to connect with him.

A bit nervous! Getting ready to launch my show

I should not be too nervous about this but for some reason I just am.
I already have 2 podcast shows on the go and this will be number 3.
The difference here is that it is only going to be a monthly one.
That should not be enough to make a difference.
Just me being over anxious.
And, it is a new type of podcast.
All about helping folks to stretch their mental capacities and manage their mental paths.

A wee bit frustrating! Voting for a new Mayor

This time I have to say that whereas the voting machine proved to be one of the best accessibility devices, it was the fact that I had to muddle through so many names of candidates before I could find my choice.

Nobody’s fault at the end of the day and no different for anyone. sighted or not.

The machine worked like a charm!  The staff at the polling centre was simply wonderful and so very helpful. At the end of the day?  A good experience!

Technology or toy? Maybe a bit of both?

I often wonder to myself if when I purchase a gadget, is it in the name of technology or is it just a toy?

Not sure how to defend myself but I plead guilty to, at times, purchasing a device or gadget for both reasons. Or, I readily admit that I have done so at times just to get my hands on a toy!

No, I do not consider myself to be frivolous but some may say otherwise. I love all of my gadgets and devices and take good care of their welfare. So, at the end of the day, guilty as asked.

Having fun! Sorting through my package

This was a huge package for me to sort through! Easy she goes and this is exactly what I needed and had to do.

One by one I carefully removed each item. Next I put them carefully aside on my counter. Then I made sure to empty my package.

Next step? I examined each item, discovered what each was, and then meticulously put them in order. This is how I solved my clutter for the day.

Laughable anyway! When the keyboard was not plugged in

This was a very laughable experience and I sure laughed to myself.

There I was pressing the keys on my USB keyboard attempting to interact with my travel laptop computer. I spent about a minute doing this. Then I began to worry and panic! What was going on? Was my travel laptop computer going to misbehave today? Had it decided to stop working?

Then lo and behold!  I checked my keyboard’s connection and voila!  Problem solved!

Just another aha moment! Finding the speaker button on my phone

Good thing that Stephen was a very patient friend. On this day I was again fumbling with my phone as I tried to find the speaker button.

Here I was, using my fingers to help me out because I do not have enough vision to see the buttons. So,  my fingers did the walking for me and through trial and error I found it!

Not as frustrating or cumbersome at the end of the day! I just need to have more patience! 😊

What a laugh! When I sent the wrong image

Nothing strange for me as a vision-impaired person, but thank goodness that it does not happen too often.

Looking back now I can smile at this one but at the time it was somewhat embarrassing.  Good thing that my dear friend Gabriella made light of it.

What I thought I had sent was definitely not what it was supposed to be. Wrong image!  This is what it was and nothing more. So, now I label all of my images and title them appropriately!

Rest in Peace my dearest aunt. Auntie Margaret is gone

I can only take a few minutes to express my total gratitude for having had Auntie be a part of my life. She came into it when I was just 11; from then until now she remained my favourite Auntie.

Easy going, humble, humorous, and always willing to listen and lend a hand!  Auntie made so many cherished memories with Mom and me.  Her visits to Trinidad and Canada were such memorable ones.
We did so many things together.
We shopped, dined, walked, cleaned house together, and so much more.
And despite always having had such a gentle and quiet disposition, I always sensed that she had to deal with a huge chunk of sadness. Not sure what it was all about but I can only speculate.

Auntie lived most of her life in Norway, so very far away from her homeland.
I know that she had always wanted to return home to stay. And during the final months of her days she had expressed a desire to visit one last time.
It was not to be but her wonderful memory shall forever live on in my memory bank.

Thank you Auntie for having been a part of my life!  I shall forever be grateful for having known you!  Your gentleness, kindness towards me, and refreshing and lively spirit shall live on with me.

Thank you for having visited with us when Mom turned 70 and for having come to visit when Robert was so very ill.

Till we meet again!

What a sad coincidence! My last birthday greeting

If only one could somehow foretell some little corner of the future. This is how I honestly felt when I sent my final birthday greeting to my Auntie Margaret.

I sent an email to my cousin Lizbet in Norway, asking her to share with my Auntie Margaret and then, lo and behold! Lizbet wrote to me later to let me know that Auntie had passed on her birthday!

For whereas I had been expecting her to go soon, it did catch me by surprise that she did so on her birthday!

Losing a loved one is never very easy and especially so when they are so very far away!
But it is as it is and I can only say, Rest in Peace my Dear Auntie.

A precious gift: Holy water from Pearl

This was such a wonderful gift to receive and Pearl was so very kind to bring it to me.  I hugged the precious bottle close to me and thanked Jesus that I had such a good friend in Pearl.

I will use this precious water to sprinkle around my home and to bless myself.  In these troubled times one can never be too generous when it comes to finding ways to protect themselves from such things as temptation, evil, and unwanted invasions of evil.

My constant Mom! Mother Mary

She is the one that I constantly call on in good times and in bad times.  She is my constant companion and I am referring to the Mother of Jesus.

I know that we all have ones that we go to for better or worse but Mother Mary is my number one go to.

In times of uncertainty, I call on her.  In good times I share my news and at the end of the day I say good night to her before entering slumber land.

And I truly enjoyed my time in the garden of the Church of the Epiphany when Pearl and I sat quietly enjoying being close to Mother Mary’s statue.

Easter is almost here once again! Sorting the contents of my Easter parcel

Ah, yes. This was Easter 2023 and Mom and I were spending it together.  What a treat for me and I had ordered some special stuff for Easter.

Gingerly and carefully I sorted the parcel that I received from the States.  There were so many little trinkets for me to sort and put into some logical order.  A bag of crystals.  Massage oil and body oil.  A nice red leather wallet, and tiny bottles of sweet fragrances.

I treasured each little trinket and thanked God that I was able to treat myself to these.

Much appreciated: A clean fridge

And this is exactly what I came home to after my trip.  A sparkling clean fridge, thanks to my Super, Nick, and his wife Lilee.  The shelves were so very clean and the fridge was so well and neatly repacked; just the way that I had left it.

More than a mixed bag: The Pearson Airport agents

Well, I call this simply hit and miss!  Sometimes there are fantastic airport agents at Pearson Airport’s terminal 3 and at other times?  Well, the only way to describe these is to say that it is a horrible experience!

The times when I am unlucky to encounter horrible agents are when these are the ones who either deliberately choose to ignore me when I attempt to engage with them or they simply do not care, choosing instead to brush me off.

This is what happened on May 31, 2023.  I had the misfortune to encounter agents who were rude, dismissive, and downright disrespectful.  It’s just another challenge for me as a vision-impaired passenger.

Just another work around! Using tape to help identify

It’s just another way for me to identify packages but I’ll tell you that means I need to remember more robustly.  So, this is what I have done.

I use pieces of tape to help identify.  The number of pieces of tape signifies what each package is.  However, I need to be more logical and orderly.  It is not an alternative that I would really recommend except if there are just a few packages.

For example:  One piece represents a certain package.  Two pieces represents another package and so on.  Cumbersome you say?  Admittedly, yes!

A welcomed day! New plants for spring 2023

And once more I welcomed my new plants, thanks to Nick’s wonderful assistance. All I had to do was to tell him what colours I wanted and he did the rest.

Nick went to the garden centre, chose my plants and then brought them back to my condo.  Finally,  he patiently planted them for me!

This is an annual occurrence.  Nick plants for me and then he and his wonderful wife clean my windows and balconies.

One more time! Rearranging my freezer and fridge

Every so often it happens and it is Mom who does the rearranging and repacking.  At the end of the day my fridge and freezer are much neater and all I need to do now is to learn where she has put things.

I have become more used to Mom’s regular events; she just loves to rearrange and repack.  She does it patiently and with gusto while I just look on.

Nothing for me to do but to wait until she is done and then I take time to relearn.

Boy, did I learn so much! Course is over

And what a relief!  From April 02 – May 19, 2023, I and 5 other students participated in the Carroll Centre’s SRUTT course and what a wonderful experience it was!

I learned so much, worked alongside some great folks and at the end of it all?  I certainly enhanced my technical knowledge.

Above all, I had the pleasure to have had Nick Corbett as my head instructor.  This unbelievable young man reminded me of the Energizer Bunny!  He kept going and never seemed to tire out!  He guided, advised, and taught with an unusually strong hand and committed spirit.

Now it’s time to put my training to work and I cannot wait!

A mild surprise! Discovering an extra pair of shoes

I guess that I was not careful enough, eh?  Ah yes, and there it was!  An extra pair or another pair of shoes sitting in my tote on the floor of my closet.

This means that I had to take all of my shoes out and then to re-identify and rearrange them.  All in a day’s work.

A messy experience! When egg yolk fell on my clothes

And oh my gosh!  I only realized that it had fallen on my shirt when I felt something warm on my chest. As soon as I had investigated I discovered that the egg yolk from my fried egg had fallen on my shirt.

These are the times when I describe it as a silent fall.  No noise, no indicator, just the warmth of  something on my chest.  Just glad that Mom was there to confirm and to help me clean it up.

Technology once more! Turning up the volume on my phone

Looking back at this now I can only smile to myself as I recall.  You see, I had to spend a few trying moments to find the volume button on my land line phone.  All that I wanted to do was to turn up the volume.

There I was, going through all of the buttons on my poor old phone before finding the right one.  And if I had taken the time to be logical about it, things would definitely have gone more smoothly for me.  However, on this particular day my patience seemed to have deserted me.

After a few minutes I did find it and at the end of it all it was not as complicated as I thought it would be.

Plant shopping with Mom: Seeking saucers for my plant pots

For the most part it is Mom who helps me to seek saucers for my plant pots.  She is bound and determined to ensure that water does not spill onto my carpets and as a result she is very meticulous in how she goes about choosing them.

Not only does she take great care to choose the saucers but she also buys sheets of thick plastic to place under the saucers.  This way, the water will not spill onto the carpet and I can tell you that, as a vision-impaired person, it is paramount that this does not happen because it would be very difficult for me to know unless I stepped into the water.

Of course, I could always be extra careful myself each time I water my plants.

A total pleasure! Working with Shaun

Working with Shaun has sure turned into such a wonderful experience for me.  Shaun is so very patient, kind, generous, and probably one of the most selfless persons that I have met.

As a pottery instructor, I consider him to be one of the best.  He has sure helped me to spark and stimulate my creative juices and my imagination.  Together we have several unique pieces, ranging from Christmas plates to pinch pots and matching spoons.  From plates and bowls to so much more.

There is nothing more refreshing and exhilarating than to have the opportunity to work with someone like Shaun.  He is always open to any and every suggestion that I make and he often enhances my ideas and redirects my thoughts.  That’s my Shaun!

Times when I smile: Could not find Mom

It sure makes for interesting times whenever I need to find Mom.   I sometimes do not know where she is and calling to her does not do the trick because she is hard of hearing and does not hear me.

So what do I do?  I need to go from room to room listening and calling and often using my sense of smell to try and detect her presence.  Sometimes she would see me and call to me but if she does not then my treasure hunt continues.

On this particular day she did not see me so I had to use my own techniques to find her.  Eventually I did and she was sitting quietly in her recliner, working on her crossword puzzles.

She was my eyes: Following the Coronation

Following the Coronation on May 06 was a lot easier for me as opposed to the funeral for Her Majesty.  Why?  Because Mom was there to be my eyes.

We woke early and sat together to watch the entire session.  Mom was her usual self: describing, commenting, and listening as best as she could.

I totally enjoyed having Mom as my commentator.  I was able to better enjoy it all.  Another memory to cherish forever.

Falling silently: When the tooth picks fell

Of course they did not make a sound when they fell onto my bathroom floor.  The only indicator that I had was when I felt them slip out of my hand.  Then I had to guess where they had fallen.

Down on my hands and knees I went.  I crawled around and luckily I located the tooth picks in short order.  There were several of them.

I counted them and then returned them to their little package.  Not one of my favourite things to do.  Those things that fall noiselessly to the floor are always a challenge to me as a vision-impaired person.

Priceless and wonderful memories: At Metro with Mom

When Mom visited me in the late winter and early spring of 2023, she really enjoyed going to the Metro supermarket and just spending time browsing and buying.  We would walk leisurely up and down the aisles and she would just enjoy looking at all of the merchandise on the packed shelves.

Mom especially enjoyed roaming around in the meat section, the produce section, and then the deli section.  She described everything that she saw to me and together we would choose.  But I always allowed her to make the final decision.

These are such priceless memories and will be forever burned in my mind and carefully stored in my memory bank.  I was never sure when she would return to Toronto after the Covid shutdown but we have been given another glorious chance to enjoy our visits to the Metro supermarket.

Memories forever! Losing my favourite bowl

After all!  Good things cannot last forever and this was the case with my favourite bowl.  I'd had this large plastic red bowl since I was a student, which was a very long time ago, and it had served me well in several different ways.

As a mixing bowl, as a salad bowl, and as a bowl in which to soak my small clothes.  I had treasured my large red plastic bowl for so many years.  Then one day it started to split its sides.  I kept using it until I could not any longer.  Then it was time to say so long.

Thanks Mom! Which haircut is the better one?

It never fails!  Every now and then I need to ask someone with vision to check out my hair cuts.  This time it was a good thing that Mom was on hand to help me out.  Unfortunately, the haircut in question was not done properly.

The hairdresser had cut my hair too short and had made a mess of my hair.  So Mom had to compare this hair cut to the previous one and she determined that the previous one was the better one.

This is probably one of the more interesting challenges for me.  That is, to determine whether or not my hair cut is a good one.  I can naturally feel the length of my hair and check to make sure that my part is in the right spot and that I still have my hair peaking on both sides.  Thereafter, I need sighted assistance to check off the rest for me.

Caught off guard! When the shoes mucked up my carpet

What a unique experience this was and thank goodness that Mom was there to notice it all.  Or else for me, as a vision-impaired person, it would have been very difficult to realize.

We were getting ready to go out and Mom suddenly exclaimed that there was black stuff all over the carpet in my dining room.  At first I could not fathom what it could be but then I began to feel something under my shoes as I walked on the carpet.  I bent down to examine my shoes and sure enough!  The soles of my shoes were coming undone in both sides of my shoe. The rest was easy to figure out.

The rubber from the shedding soles spilled onto my carpet.  Good thing that Mom’s quick observance picked up on this.  Ah, yes!  Another challenge for me as a vision-impaired person.

Technology at work! Keeping Mom abreast of her garden

We have found a terrific way to keep Mom abreast of her garden while she is away, and how do we do this? Rather simple!
Carl and Ryan take pictures.
They email them to me.
Then I show them to Mom.

This has all worked out so very well and Mom gets so much pleasure in seeing her garden from afar.

It is never too late to find a new way!

Slow and sure! Walking with Mom

It is all about: easy as she goes.  Nice, slow, and gentle!  Telling myself that Mom and I will be just fine!

Dealing with those whose first language is not English

I really do my best to understand and to communicate with those whose first language is not English and I can tell you, during the Covid years wearing a mask made it so much more difficult.

Now that Covid is over, I need to put the extra effort in to ensure that my communication is understandable and that I can also understand. But Covid may not be as over as we would wish so the effort continues.  I just need to listen more carefully, be a bit more attentive, and of course, be more patient!

And how many times every day do I remember this?

Yes!  My beloved granny was a giant!  She was wise!  She was insightful!  She was innovative and creative!

Practical and logical: Dealing with notices

If I receive my notice electronically then there is no problem, but whenever I receive a notice that has either been stuck in my door or it comes in the mail then here is where the challenge arises and my frustration only grows.

I am blind/vision-impaired and cannot read printed notices.  How many times have I begged those utility companies that I deal with, others who I work with, and those who should know better to please change the way they send me notes?

One of these days, I may just send them a Braille note and see how they feel.

No different for anyone: Difficulty understanding

I do not think that it is any different for anyone and it does not matter whether or not one is blind, vision-impaired, or sighted! It is all about trying to understand when communicating with a mask on.

During the Covid years it was extremely hard for me at times, especially so when I had to try and decipher a different accent.

Now that we are not wearing masks as much it is a bit better, but with Covid threatening to return I need to prepare for this once more. Others will need to do so, too.

New technology for me! The blood pressure machine

I  do not own one so my interaction has come from watching Mom interact with hers.

In the good old days, blood pressure machines did not emit audio feedback, but alas!  Now they do!

Mom’s blood pressure machine is very easy to understand and the trick here is to ensure that the band is correctly placed on the arm.

Oh boy! My cluttered kitchen counter

One way to put myself in a frustrated or confused mood is when I inadvertently clutter my kitchen counter. I need to be able to find what I need in quick time and as a vision-impaired person it is even more important for me.

If I am not well-organized or if I misplace items or forget where I have put them then I am in big trouble.

So what is the solution here? Keep my counter uncluttered.
