Nervous and anxious: The CompTIA exam challenge

 

Each time I dare to take an online exam I have to admit that my heart is practically beating quickly in my clammy hands. For I never know what to expect.

Will it go well or will there be technical challenges?  Will I have-on site technical support? Will the access technology behave when communicating with the exam?  

This is what happened on October 1, 2025, when I went to take my network security exam. The poor scribe/reader was unable to read the exam. There was no computer set up with a screen reader for me and so the exam had to be cancelled by me.

What a disappointment and once again accessibility failed to be there for me. Now I need to work on getting this fixed, not just for me but for any other vision-impaired person wishing to take these online exams.

A slap in the face? Touch screens at Wendy's

Just imagine my dismay and total disappointment when I visited the Wendy’s fast food restaurant with Stephie to enjoy a meal. When it came to choosing my drink of choice I could not do it on my own, and why?

Because the touch screen was totally inaccessible and unusable to me as a vision impaired/blind customer.

No! No accessible key pad and Stephie had to do it for me.

Please Wendy's!  Please rectify this asap!

A good one! The Sun Wing experience

This was my first time flying with the Sun Wing Airline. On the whole I would say that the experience was a pleasant one. However, it is difficult to tell how accessible this airline really was because Stephie was with me.

The staff was helpful to me when it came to pre boarding. They offered some assistance during the flight. But I do not think that it would be fair of me to do a complete accessibility analysis because I had sighted assistance.

They linger in my mind! Thoughts of Europe

 

Ah, yes!  Such refreshing thoughts of my visits to Europe! I have no regrets in the least. Jilla and I have done a lot of traveling across Europe together and once more? Great memories to add to my overflowing memory bank.

The European culture is so much more easy going than the North American culture. People seem to be more laid back, so much more aware of accessibility. It is such a pleasure and refreshing experience when I don’t have to be concerned about folks reaching out to me.

For my memory bank: Touring Europe

 

If I had to do it again I would not hesitate. It was so very different from my cruise to Hawaii.
My European tour was very well-constructed and offered us so much to see and do.
On the other hand, my tour to Hawaii lacked direction and did not have any constructive guidance.

People in Europe were simply welcoming and friendly.  So very willing and ready to assist and accessibility was always at the forefront of assistance.

I would also respectfully submit that when it comes to accessibility, Europe is way ahead.

What would I do without my Metro? Metro the familiar

After all of these years, the Metro Supermarket remains such familiar grounds for Mom and me.  Metro is the fall back for me with all of its friendly staff and easy to find goods on the shelves.  The produce and meat sections are still very easy to navigate and the same for the freezer section.

I will respectfully submit that as someone with a vision impairment, it is so important for me to be able to navigate the aisles easily.  To find what I seek and to have staff who are always there to help and assist.  

For Mom as a senior it is so important that she, too, can obtain friendly help and assistance.

No way to tell: No Braille on the microwave buttons

This is how it is at Mom’s home.  At my home I have a talking microwave but at her home there is no Braille and her microwave is not a talking one.

So I do not have the ability to warm things for myself or to use her microwave in any way. In short, I am unable to cook in her microwave.

This makes me feel quite out of sorts, so to speak!  And how can I rectify this?  I’ll suggest to Mom that I put some raised dots on her microwave the next time I visit.  It is not very hard to do but we shall see.

A necessary evil! Ordering online

For me, I see two sides to this.  For the one thing, it is very convenient and it is fast.  However, whenever the website in question is not very accessible for me as a blind/vision-impaired person, then here is where I become very anxious and unhappy.

If I am unable to navigate the website because it is too complicated to do so, or I am having difficulty using it, then I just give up and choose to use my trusted telephone to call and order. I am not the only one in this boat. Many seniors who did not grow up with technology feel the same way and then you have the technically shy and those with other types of disabilities that prevent them from taking advantage of the ordering online option.

Who is listening? The inaccessible pin pad

 Every time a  pin pad is inaccessible it means that I need to seek sighted assistance.  And what do I mean by having to deal with an accessible pin pad?  This is when one needs to use a touch screen instead of a keypad in order to carry out a transaction.  

This is what has happened to me too many times in the past few months.  I have been confronted by an inaccessible pin pad and I am being forced to ask for sighted help.

Sadly enough more restaurants, medical offices, and other types of business establishments are using inaccessible pin pads.  It looks like that this trend is here to stay and now I need to find a way to preserve my independence and confidentiality.

Who is listening? The continued request for electronic documents

 

Without having access to electronic documents, I am afraid that blind/vision-impaired persons will continue to struggle to keep up to date with info; especially so in cases of urgent and important information.

As I continue to struggle to encourage and convince the team at the management office in my condo complex, I am finding more and more that this is a challenge that is going to continue to haunt and irritate me for a very long time to come.

It is a weekly struggle for me.  More often than not I have to keep reminding them to send me my documents in electronic format.  They almost never apologize, instead proffering  lame and anemic excuses!

A pandemic problem: Filing during a Pandemic

 

Like everything else, filing governmental related papers during the pandemic has also been affected.  Prior  to the pandemic, we used to be able to visit an office to conduct business face to face but now one has to either do it online or via the phone.  

For me, as a blind/vision impaired person, this can be a double-edged sword.  For, if I am able to do it via phone it is easy enough.  But, if I have to do it via the online route, then here is where I require sighted assistance if the website is not accessible/navigable/usable.  

Going the online route means that I need to give up my privacy and independence in order to complete said process and I truly understand that with the changing landscape this needs to be so.  

So, what is the solution?  A call for more accessible/navigable/usable websites.

He was my hero: Apple, here we come

I have always considered the late Steve Jobs to be one of my role models!  His creativity, innovation, and imagination have always managed to capture and hold my attention.  

Steve Jobs is responsible for having opened so many doors of opportunity for me; especially those that almost always seemed to be slammed shut to me. It is because of him that my whole world of possibility has changed in a big way and now I have a chance to make things better than possible.

Apple is giving me a chance to do this because of an opportunity for me to work with them to encourage and show their consultants how to include accessibility and inclusivity into their presentation content.  I'll have a great chance to show over 300 consultants how they can use the above to create benefits, expand their customer base and increase their bottom lines. Apple, here I come!

We must not give up: The bank that does not get it

They are located outside North America and I have only run into this very chronic and irritating problem because of having to deal internationally.

They do not understand when told that a customer is vision-impaired and needs help to set up online banking because their website is difficult to navigate.  They do not even understand when told that  documents need to be sent to the customer in an alternate format.  They sit there and tell you to use voiceover to navigate the website.  They do not even understand when you say that the problem is not with the computer or iPhone; it is with the website.

I can only be left to conclude that this bank either does not care, does not understand, or simply does not get it.

A day in history: Listening to the inauguration

I refused to listen to the previous one but this one, despite being different due to Covid restrictions, was one that I would remember for a very long time.

As a Canadian living just next door to the big giant, I felt it only fitting that I listen in. Although I could not see the images, the descriptions provided by the TV stations that I tuned into provided more than adequate commentary for me as a vision-impaired person.

There are many newscasters, announcers, and commentators who do a fantastic job of  providing more than adequate descriptions so that a vision- impaired  listener can follow what's going on in a meaningful manner, but more still needs to be done.

An example would be for ads and commercial producers to provide audio descriptions at the end of their messages whenever they wish for listeners to call a phone number or visit a website.  This needs to be improved.

The changing landscape: My October law exam

Boy, oh boy, and what a difference it was for this exam! Due to the pandemic, everything changed for our online exams at the University of London and now my friend Sam had to come to my home to be the invigilator.

Sam came early and together we made very sure that everything was ready to go, but as they say: something had to go wrong.

It came when Sam attempted to access the instructional video and guess what? There was no audio and no captioning so those of us with either an audio or hearing disability were out of luck.

This was quite disappointing, that the University of London failed to create an accessible video, and Sam and I certainly made our unhappiness and disappointment known to the university. This should not be happening in these modern times when accessibility is being promoted more vigorously.

Continued frustrations: My Apple exam

There are exams and then there are exams. If I were to categorize my Apple certification exam, which I wrote on August 4, 2020, I would say that it was probably one of the most stressful but at the same time interesting of all!

From the start, this exam was never meant to be a smooth one but Shane was absolutely superb in ensuring that I had the best chance to succeed and succeed I did!

This exam was not accessible for a vision-impaired person. The developers of Apple's exams are still very much behind when it comes to accessibility and they do not seem to fully understand.

My first interaction with Apple exams was two years ago in 2018 and nothing much has changed since then. Several questions are difficult to understand for someone who is vision-impaired and requires sighted assistance to navigate and describe.

Additional time for a person with a disability to write is offered, but alas! At the end of regular time one is kicked out of the exam and is unable to re-enter to complete the exam.

Hopefully these glitches will be rectified in the near future and I look forward to working with Apple and the administrators of their exams to make things more accessible.

Not quite up to mark: The Elections Canada forms

At the Canadian Federal Elections in October 2019, I have to admit that this time this agency fell a bit short when it came to providing me with accessible materials; this being in a format that I could read and interact

with as someone with a vision impairment.  In addition, to be able to vote independently.

The template was not accessible so I had no way of knowing where to place my check mark. However, Elections Canada redeemed itself when the returning officer was able to vouch as an assistant for me and she carried out the

appropriate procedures to ensure that I voted privately.

As they say, stuff happens and I can understand this and I am also happy when a solution is found. But when there is a total lack of training and an infringement against the customer/voter/consumer, then here is where I draw

the line. In this case, there was a happy ending.

And it continues! The challenges of unequal access to education

This is what I am presently facing as I move into the final stages of my law degree. Things started off so well but since 2016, this university has started to slide backwards in its provision of accessibility services to students with special needs.

In short, what it advertises on its website is not exactly what it provides. It is no longer providing texts in alternate formats. Its virtual learning experience is far from being accessible. Statute books are not accessible

and come exam time it is extremely difficult to convert statute books in PDF formats that have not been appropriately tagged for accessible content.

Above all, it is becoming more difficult to extract timely responses from the special arrangements department.

I can only hope that this changes soon.

Some day at Christmas

One of my favourite Christmas carols is "Some day at Christmas,” made popular by the late Michael Jackson.  Yes, some day at Christmas, when I could wake up on a peaceful morning and welcome yet another special day with my loved ones around me and the Christ Child in my heart.  

When I would be able to say, "Finally!  All is well and now blind kids will have an equal opportunity to be like their mainstream counterparts."  When they can play with mainstream toys and be able to use cell phones and IPods just like sighted kids.  When they would be able to play with games just like their sighted friends and not have to worry about inaccessibility.  When their classrooms and playgrounds would be free of accessibility barriers and they would have an equal opportunity to be just kids!

Some day at Christmas, when I could go to bed just before Santa makes his rounds knowing that all of my wishes have been granted.  That all websites have been made  accessible.  That all supermarkets and stores have  been made fully accessible to blind persons.  That online courses and distance learning have all been made accessible and usable to blind persons.  That blind persons have equal access to all reading materials in the same way that sighted persons do.  

Some day at Christmas, after Santa has come  and gone leaving a huge package for me under my Christmas tree, I could wake up and say, "Finally!  The banks have finally gotten it!  Their ATMs are now fully accessible.  Blind persons can now access all point of sale devices and touch screens without having to ask for sighted assistance. Blind passengers can now access kiosks at airports, they can enjoy movies on board aircrafts, and no more problems at airports, train stations, and bus terminals for them."

Some day at Christmas, as I sit quietly in a church along with others waiting for the Christmas Mass to begin, I could say, "Thank you God for ensuring that from now on society will treat blind persons as normal persons who can function on their own and the only thing wrong with them is that they are unable to see."

Some day at Christmas!  Ah, yes, it is only my dreams but who says that dreams don't come true?  The smell of cookies baking in my kitchen is real!  Christmas Carols being played around me are real!  Children laughing and families decorating are real!  Is it too much for me to ask Santa to help make my dreams come true?

The late Steve Jobs made some of my dreams and those of other blind persons come true!  Dare I dream that there could be another Steve Jobs out there just waiting to bring hope to the blind world?

Frustration! Difficulty accessing my phone messages

Just imagine when I discovered that I could not access my phone messages while traveling out of Canada. I simply could not do it.

I could not even get to the option to enter my password in order to access my messages. So I had to elicit help from my dear friend Gabriella to do this.

I had to give her my password and that was just fine. She did the rest but this was a new experience for me.

She had to send me emails with the contents of each message and it was strange for me to read my phone messages instead of hearing them firsthand.
