Not very pleasant: Bees and wasps around the table

This is probably one of the biggest concerns for me whenever I venture to dine outdoors.  First of all, those wasps do not make a sound when they approach and if you are unlucky to get in their way then you’ll only know of their presence when they sting you.

In the case of the bees, you may have time to duck out of their way if you hear them coming but this is not very easy to avoid.

The sting of a bee is almost as painful as that of a wasp.  The one thing that I have noticed is that if you decide to confront a wasp, somehow they manage to alert their friends to come to their assistance.  Not so with a bee.

It made me smile! When I forgot to close the kettle

I am not sure what would or could have happened if I did not discover that I had left the lid of my kettle opened!  Maybe the kettle would have run out of water thus causing some kind of mishap!

So, how did I discover this?  I noticed that the kettle was taking a bit long to boil its water and the sound of the kettle was different.  Then, I decided to investigate and found that the lid was open.

Frustration! When I spilled the gravy

Needless to say that it was not very pleasant.  I never even knew that I had spilled it until I stepped in it on the floor.

Then, I checked my counter top and found gravy there.  Then, I checked the cupboard doors under the counter and lo and behold!  It was there, too!

The spilling of gravy is something that I need to ensure does not happen very often because when it happens it is a lot of work for me to determine the size of the spill, where the gravy has spilled, and then to take action.

Cleaning up the gravy is another story for not only do I need to clean it up but then to make sure that there are no stains left behind and for this I need sighted assistance.

When gravy spills, there is no sound so I need to take good care not to spill.

A precious day: Gubby and me Aug 18, 2021

This was a wonderful day for me as my dear friend Gubby and I celebrated a late special birthday for her.  The day was simply made for us as we walked along the board walk enjoying the warm sun, the fresh cool air blowing in from the lake and listening to and watching the kids play in the shallows of the lake.

We spent about an hour outside before entering the restaurant to enjoy a wonderful birthday meal for my friend.  The day was made even more special because of the yummy food, great customer service and warm and wonderful conversation between Gubby and me.

Days like these are so rare and special and ones to remember for a lifetime.

Most important for me: What colour is my outfit

Now that I no longer have enough vision to help me decipher the colour of my clothes, I need to make doubly sure that I know what colours I am wearing.  So, here is my method.

I first use my colour detector to help me determine the colours and if I am not sure then I ask my wonderful neighbour, Sandra.

For the most part, I have been able to stay out of trouble because of having organized my closet with Mom’s assistance, and if I buy anything new then I take great care  to ensure that I place identification tags on them and place them appropriately in my closet.

I am happy with this method but I cannot be too careful.

My world forever! My yellow world

My yellow world has been with me for as long as I can remember and now with precious little vision to enjoy my favourite colour, I use my vast memory bank to help me live in my yellow world.

As a kid I had a yellow cup, yellow mug, yellow plate and saucer and everything around me at the meal table was yellow.  I thank my parents and Granny for having entertained my desires.

Then, most of my clothes were yellow: shorts, dresses, pants, shirts, and t shirts.  Skirts, jackets, sweaters, accessories and so much more.

When I grew into adulthood, the yellow desires continued and now as I move along, even my IPHONE and IPAD are yellow.   I am just not sure why my world has always been yellow.

As a child playing on the beach, my spade and bucket were yellow.  My beach ball was yellow and one of our dogs named Yeller was yellow.

Even the logo of my company, and most of the cover art to my audio mysteries are all yellow.  I guess that I must be in great company because the sun is also yellow.

All stressed out! Those days of travel anxiety

Things have certainly changed over the years when it comes to traveling on the subway in Toronto.  It was so many years ago when I left home at 6 a.m. in the morning to get to work in downtown Toronto and then not returning home until almost 6 p.m.

Ah, yes!  Those days were filled with so much anxiety.  I had to fight my way onto crowded buses.  I had to navigate through the crowds in the subway stations.  I had to fight to find a seat on packed subway cars.  I had to navigate my way through and around obstacles on sidewalks.  But most of all I had to keep calm and maintain control of my frayed nerves.

I prayed hard each day as I journeyed to and from work.  I did everything that I could think of in order to keep my head above water, but the longest day had an end.

That was the day when someone attempted to throw me onto the subway line.  I shall always remember this horrible moment.  One minute I was leaning against the back wall of Union Station, waiting for my subway, and the next I was air borne as some unknown man was carrying me towards the edge of the platform.

I remembered seeing the yellow strip of the edge of the platform as it came into my view!  I screamed, kicked free, and then bystanders were chasing the suspect but never caught him.

I managed to collect myself and even managed to continue working for a few more months downtown but I finally gave up the challenge and quit.

Great working buddies! Good days with Fern and Greg

Yet again, here were two wonderful people that I met so many years ago when I worked for the Royal Bank of Canada.   They taught me so much.  They were never afraid to help and assist me.  They imparted their knowledge so freely and they were always so very pleasant to me.

Fern was like a big sister, always having time to chat, and Greg was like a big brother always wanting to show me something new.

Such wonderful people who were only there for a season and a reason.

Two wonderful ladies! Remembering Gina and Shelly at work

It does not matter that it was so many years ago!  These were two very wonderful ladies who made very sure that I was always happy and smiling at work.

They took care of me personally and professionally.  They treated me equally and they never hesitated to assist me.  Most of all, they never seemed to  be uncomfortable around me because of my vision impairment.

Gina introduced me to her husband, John, and he joined our little team of happy goers.  Shelly introduced me to her husband-to-be at that time, Rob, and he was just such a wonderful person to meet.

Our chats went way beyond work; it was all about having fun and learning from each other.  My life at that time was certainly enriched by Gina and Shelly.

Proud of myself: Fixing the laundry room door

I have to admit that upon completion of this task I felt a bit of pride rising up in me. I had to take my step stool to help me reach the top of the door.  Then, I had to carefully slip the little wheel back into its track and to make sure that it was sliding properly.

Patience, patience!  Careful, careful!  However, I did it and I can live to tell the story!

Tedious but necessary: Making sure that the images are accurate

Oh boy, this is yet another challenge for me.  I need to ensure that when I caption or title any image, be it images sent to me by friends and family, or those described to me, I have to be super sure that I title them accurately.

Some may say that why should I bother?  But I need to because how else would I know what they are? Then, when I need to send an image to someone I need to know what I am sending.

Just think,  what if I did not do this and I had to send an image of my passport to a government agency?  And I sent something entirely different?  Yikes!

A humorous matter! What colour is my hair?

This, indeed, is a very funny situation for me as not being able to know the colour of my hair means that I need to ask one of my sighted friends to give me an answer.

My friends often laugh whenever I ask them this question.  They understand my predicament and sometimes they may try to put one over me but I soon discover what they are up to when I hear laughter in their responses.

Just bear in mind that everyone has a different view of things, so someone may tell me that I have lots of grey hair while another may tell me that I have lots of black hair.

All in a day's smiles and laughter.
