Engaging with something new: Instagram

 

Thanks to Ran and Blair, I have gingerly entered the world of Instagram. For the most part, I have deliberately avoided engaging with Instagram because of the challenges of accessibility and navigation.

I am very fortunate to have Ran and Blair beside me. I know that this is not a perfect solution in that I am not independent enough to do this on my own. However, it is the best solution for now.

Thank God for Stephie! The Amazon experience

 

Call me a lazy one but for me it is much easier to ask my friend Stephie to order for me.

Together, Stephie and I search Amazon for whatever I need. She describes it to me and together we make the decision as to what I would like her to order.

Stephie has become really good at understanding what my likes are. She describes things in detail to me and this is an advantage for me in that if I were to order on my own I would not always know how the product looks. So there is my excuse.  

Ordering via Amazon is nice and easy but I've just got to watch my spending.

Learning to cope : Dealing with a running toilet tank

 

Ob boy, this is not my favourite challenge. When this happens I normally take a deep breath and then dive into the problem, so to speak.

First, I remove the tank’s cover. Next I plunge my hands into the cold water and locate the flusher. Then I raise the flusher and allow the water to run out of the tank. Then I replace the cover and pray that this has fixed the problem.

On many occasions, however, I need to call on my special Super Nick to rescue me.

Learning to cope: The aftermath

For me, it seems to get that wee bit more traumatic after a computer crash. Maybe it’s just me growing older but never the less the aftermath is always that bit more difficult to cope with.

I need to depend on sighted assistance to get things going again. The sighted assistance is almost always ready at hand but every now and then I need to wait until that sighted assistance can come to my aid.

I really appreciate my sighted assistance but I have to admit that I really try to do as much as I can for myself and it does not matter whether or not one is vision-impaired, I am sure that the feeling is the same.

he thing about this is that when it comes to either attending the AGM or registering my vote, I still need sighted assistance to perform these processes.

The new way:Shopping with Stephie on Amazon

 

It’s a new way of shopping for me. It’s very much like window shopping, if I am looking for some sort of comparison.

I tell Stephie what I would like her to search for. Then she gets online and goes to Amazon. She begins to search for my requested item.

Then, when she finds it she begins to describe it to me. I ask her for her opinion and together we choose. Stephie fills out the required fields and then she submits. Voila!  It is all done.

Welcoming a new gadget: My new razor

 

Thanks to Stephie I now have a new gadget in my personal arsenal.
Yes, it is the new personal razor that enables and allows me to deal with my personal needs. It is very easy to use.

It fits nicely into my hand, and yes! Most easy to charge and maintain.

It is always a relief and a pleasure whenever I am able to get this all balanced and squared away.

No sighted assistance needed. No having to ask if my razor is fully charged. I can now do it all on my own.

A new one for me! Dealing with new surroundings

 

I think that I have most of this down to a routine. Whenever I travel, I start by familiarizing myself with the room.

Next comes the bathroom, in great detail. I need to know where everything is, from wash basin to shower.

In the room, I look for the outlets to plug in my devices. Then I look for the clothes closet and the desk.

Familiarizing myself with the buffet, the restaurant, and other facilities is not as important if I am traveling with a sighted friend or family member. Nevertheless, I still like to be a bit familiar with my surroundings.

How I missed Mom! Paradise plus

 

I think that it is the only way for me to describe my trip to Saint Martin in October 2023. I was sad that Mom was not with me but Stephie and I sure enjoyed it all. The resort was very easy to navigate but Stephie was the perfect guide.

The buffet was easy to navigate and never too busy. The restaurants were easy to find and oh, yes!  The beach! Simply wonderful!

I would admit, though, that it sure helped to have sighted assistance.  I am not sure how it would have worked out if Stephie was not with me.

Just another challenge! Switching to a new cable box

 This is what happened a few months ago when my cable company switched to a new cable box. I had to learn how to navigate my box. I had to learn how to use the new remote.

Thank goodness that this new remote enables me to input my channel changes via voice.

The technician was helpful and then I had Sandra and Nick and Susan to complete my familiarization.

A welcomed day! New plants for spring 2023

And once more I welcomed my new plants, thanks to Nick’s wonderful assistance. All I had to do was to tell him what colours I wanted and he did the rest.

Nick went to the garden centre, chose my plants and then brought them back to my condo.  Finally,  he patiently planted them for me!

This is an annual occurrence.  Nick plants for me and then he and his wonderful wife clean my windows and balconies.

A messy experience! When egg yolk fell on my clothes

 And oh my gosh!  I only realized that it had fallen on my shirt when I felt something warm on my chest. As soon as I had investigated I discovered that the egg yolk from my fried egg had fallen on my shirt.

These are the times when I describe it as a silent fall.  No noise, no indicator, just the warmth of  something on my chest.  Just glad that Mom was there to confirm and to help me clean it up.

She was my eyes: Following the Coronation

 

Following the Coronation on May 06 was a lot easier for me as opposed to the funeral for Her Majesty.  Why?  Because Mom was there to be my eyes.

We woke early and sat together to watch the entire session.  Mom was her usual self: describing, commenting, and listening as best as she could.

I totally enjoyed having Mom as my commentator.  I was able to better enjoy it all.  Another memory to cherish forever.

A huge relief: Cleaning out my storage closet

 

Oh, what a relief for me!  This was something that I had been planning for a long time now and thanks to Stephie and Mom, it is finally done.  Everything is very organized.  I could not have done it without them as my sighted assistants.  It took a few hours but now all is tidy, neat, and very organized.  

At least I can find what I am looking for without too much difficulty.  One less thing to worry about.

What a surprise! When I hung the Crucifix upside down

 

Looking back at this now I can only smile to myself because this is probably one of the regular challenges for me. That is, whenever I hang things incorrectly.

Good thing that my friendly neighbour Sandra came to my rescue.  She gently told me that the poor Crucifix was hanging upside down!  So I asked her to hang it right for me and she willingly obliged.

Hanging pictures or anything else on my walls will always be a challenge for me as someone with a vision impairment.  I willingly accept this and take it all in with a smile!

So sad to leave! Preparing to return home

 

I have always said that when preparing to return home to Canada, one of the most difficult things for me is leaving Mom!  It does not get any easier and the best thing for me is to simply accept this and to find ways to deal with it!

We have such a wonderful relationship!  We are best of friends!  She is the big sister that I never had!  She is my adviser, my fashion consultant, my sounding board, my comfort, my solace, and so much more!  She is also my eyes, and as a vision-impaired person I depend on her to tell me when I have missed a spill, when I need to ensure that my clothes match and much more.

Mom is always there to look out for me!  She describes the images on the TV, and she reads the headlines in the newspapers to me!  Ah yes, leaving Mom is no easy feat, but to be positive: There are more times ahead!

No great surprise: Online banking set up

I really consider this to be a necessary evil but thank goodness I have trusted help around me.  I simply find online banking to be cumbersome, often inaccessible and unusable, and I really feel so very badly for seniors and those who I refer to as technically shy.  In addition, there are those who did not grow up in the era of technology and as a result it is even more challenging for these folks.

So, what I do is to heavily depend on my trusted help to assist me to get through these challenges.  Am I lazy?  I do not think so!

Trying to set up online banking for the first time is quite a chore and as a vision-impaired person I have to put all of my trust in the one assisting me to do it. If I do not know this person then I feel even more vulnerable.

The world of shopping: Shopping for various things

 

I will tell you that my preference would definitely be to do my shopping in person, but there are definite advantages for both.

Shopping online is quick and easy if a website is accessible and usable for me as a vision-impaired person.  However, if it is not then here is where I need to find sighted assistance to help me out and I need to ensure that my sighted assistant has enough time to be available.

In the case of in-person shopping, it all comes down to finding someone I trust to go shopping with me.  Mom is my number 1 go-to person and after that it is Stephie and then we go down the line from there.

Easy does it! Going carefully down the stairs

 

Oh, yes!  The steps at Mom’s home are steep and I need to be extra careful when descending. So, I hold onto the railings on both sides.  I go slowly and gingerly and before descending I make sure that Mom is at the bottom before I start my descent.

Mom taps her ring on the railing as she descends and she also shakes the railing and both of these strategies help me to know when she has reached the bottom.

Finally, she calls out to me.
