Got to get ready! Traveling again

I am very honest when I tell you that traveling is no longer much fun for me.  Especially so when I need to do it alone.

If I know that someone will be at the other end to meet me, like Jilla in the UK or Cathie and Chris in Montreal, then it is fun. However, when I need to do it on trips where I check in on my own and then travel on my own?  No, no fun!

The landscape for traveling has changed dramatically and for me, as a vision-impaired person, it has become nerve racking and very stressful.

If you would like to learn more about me as a sight-loss coach and author then I invite you now to visit http://www.donnajodhan.com

There you will not only learn about me as a sight-loss coach and author but you will also gain insights into my campaign against bullying and why I strongly believe that you need to consider joining me in order to insure that the future of our kids with their wide-eyed smiles and infectious laughter is secured forever.

A delightful lady! Angie and I traveling together

Angie is such a wonderful person and such fun to travel with. She is patient, and her gentle demeanour sure goes a long way to making our travels a very pleasant time.

She does not really panic.  She is very methodical and she plans ahead of time. She is a great guide for me and never flinches when it comes to politely asking folks to give way for us to walk by.

Lots of fun with Angie.

Farewells are no fun: Driving to the airport

This time I was just so glad that Mom came for the drive. Not sure why I did not think of this before and at the end of it all it worked very well.

I was just so relieved to see that Mom was not as upset this time when I was leaving. We chatted, laughed, and I promised to be back very soon.

I took her hand in mine just before exiting the car and this was a really warm and comforting feeling for me. See you again soon my precious girl!

Getting ready to flap my wings: Packing for trip November

There is always an air of excitement when I get ready to flap my wings to visit Mom. Especially so at Christmas time.

I truly enjoy packing my suitcases piece by piece. I think of all of the goodies that I’d like to take for her and to just imagine her delight at receiving them all.

This time I am packing an apple crumble, the poinsettia plate, a stuffed turkey breast, and so much more. Maybe I’ll put some surprises in as well. Happy times are here again!

A new one for me! Dealing with new surroundings

I think that I have most of this down to a routine. Whenever I travel, I start by familiarizing myself with the room.

Next comes the bathroom, in great detail. I need to know where everything is, from wash basin to shower.

In the room, I look for the outlets to plug in my devices. Then I look for the clothes closet and the desk.

Familiarizing myself with the buffet, the restaurant, and other facilities is not as important if I am traveling with a sighted friend or family member. Nevertheless, I still like to be a bit familiar with my surroundings.

Always a pleasure: London calling

I really cannot explain it but since 2022 I have been visiting the UK and staying with my dear friend Jilla. I started this trend in 2014 when I attended a chess tournament in Windermere. Then I returned to Windermere in 2019.

Over these 2 visits I made some really great connections which have now blossomed into solid friendships.  I also reconnected with SR Christina, now SR Bernadette, reconnected with my Liverpool cousins, and decided to visit Christopher Grange.

This visit was extremely difficult for me as I made myself deal with some very personal and unfinished memories.  It was such a relief to me when I had finally dealt with it. Then reconnecting with Jilla, so very precious. Above all, my long overdue connection with Angie, and now we have become great friends.

In 2022 I attended my graduation at the University of London to accept my Law Degree. Then Jilla and I traveled to Normandy France. On this visit I met my Liverpool cousins and Mary and Yvonne.

In 2023 I again visited London and this time Jilla and I embarked on a River Boat cruise to the Danube. Then I visited Angie and we visited with Mary, and Yvonne, and her husband Steve.

For 2024 another visit to London and another River Boat cruise. More memories to add to my bulging memory bank.

For my memory bank: Touring Europe

If I had to do it again I would not hesitate. It was so very different from my cruise to Hawaii.
My European tour was very well-constructed and offered us so much to see and do.
On the other hand, my tour to Hawaii lacked direction and did not have any constructive guidance.

People in Europe were simply welcoming and friendly.  So very willing and ready to assist and accessibility was always at the forefront of assistance.

I would also respectfully submit that when it comes to accessibility, Europe is way ahead.

A great experience! The river boat cruise

This was one of the best experiences that I have ever had! I have always wanted to go on a River Boat cruise and I was not disappointed.

When I compare this to an ocean cruise, and speaking as a vision-impaired passenger, the River Boat cruise wins hands down. Maybe because the boat was much smaller with many less people.  Or maybe because of the much smaller size it was easier to navigate my way around.

Having my friend Jilla sure helped as she showed me the way and taught me all kinds of tricks. Jilla is an experienced traveler so this definitely helped.

I got to know the staff and the cruise director was simply superb!
Most of all, I truly enjoyed the on-land tours and learned so much European history.

It was an eye opener for me and I was not disappointed.
I loved how the room was laid out; compact and easy to navigate.

First time after Covid: Mom and I to travel

Traveling these days has become more of a challenge and even more so after the days of the Covid pandemic.  There are challenges to face and greater ones for those who are vision-impaired and those with hearing challenges.

For Mom and me it is even more of a challenging ordeal.  I am vision-impaired and she is hearing impaired.  In short, I am our ears and she is our eyes.

Thank goodness that we have a good rapport.  I hear and she sees and we communicate well with each other.  Nevertheless, it is indeed more challenging.  Especially so these days when at some airports there are agents who simply do not appear to possess any sort of awareness training, and are sorely lacking in knowing how to engage and how to communicate effectively.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly award-winning sight-loss coach and accessibility advisor, wishing you a terrific day.

Safe and sure! Preparing the gadgets for travel

This is probably one of the most challenging tasks for me to do before I travel.  To make sure that all of my gadgets are working, have enough battery power, and that they are simply ready to go.

I take several of these with me, from my Victor Stream reader to my handy dandy pocket clock, to my tiny tape recorder, and then to my Braille display.  And let’s just add my laptop to this list.

I need to concentrate.  I need to keep things focused, and I must ensure that I take everything that I need.

Ah yes!  My traveling gadgets.

Exciting times ahead: Organizing for travel in November 2022

Never a dull moment when it comes to organizing for travel.  Especially when it comes to traveling to visit Mom in the Caribbean.  First things first and I decided that I’ll be taking two suitcases.

The smaller one will be filled with my shoes and some of my computer equipment.  Then the larger one will contain my clothes and other things.  The difference is that this year I’ll be using those packing cubes to organize my stuff.  I can’t wait to see how it will all work.

Once I got the hang of things it was relatively easy to follow through.  Nothing to it for me and I use the same concept when I travel elsewhere.

Will never forget these dates: Memories forever

This is exactly how I feel as I sit here writing this blog entry. It’s all about my recent momentous trip to Britain and I’ll just mention those very special dates.

July 13 – Meeting Connie and Sister Bernadette after so many years.  I first met Connie when I was studying in Montreal at Concordia University and what a wonderful girl she was then. And now she is the same gentle, generous, and kind person.

I had met Sister Bernadette when I studied in England as a teenager.  She is the same vibrant, lively, and always ready-to-listen Nun!  Our walk in Region Park was one never to forget!  The fragrances, the warm British sun, and children laughing, it was simply overwhelming!

July 14 – My graduation and Jilla and Angie were with me!  Hearing my name called as I walked across the stage and then the shout out from Princess Anne!  I could not see anything but hearing was enough! The toast with Jilla and Angie afterwards and then a never to be forgotten lunch with Jilla, Angie, Connie, and John and Lizbet.  Familiar voices from past and present surrounded me!

July 16 – Meeting my Liverpool family at a noisy bar and then the walk  on July 17 in Sefton Park where Uncle Lance used to enjoy his times.

July 20 to 23 – Unforgettable moments in Normandy: Walking with Jilla through those war cemeteries and on the beaches of Normandy!  I got to walk the walk!

Memories forever!  I heard it all, smelled it all, touched it all, and tasted it all!  It did not matter that I could not see!

Most appreciated: Helping hands on a trip

This is exactly how it was for me on my recent trip to England.  From beginning to end!  This is how it was for me.

From the time I left my home with Stephie and Ellie when they took me to the airport, to the good fortune of having sat next to Annie in business class.  I could not have desired a better traveling companion.  She helped me all the way!

Then, for the duration of my trip, I had top notch help from Jilla, Angie, Lizbet, and John.  These wonderful helping hands sure made my trip to England and Normandy moments to remember forever!

Ah, yes!  Wonderful helping hands who gave so willingly to help me enjoy so many things!

A must for me: Working to ensure a smooth trip

For me, it is so very important that I do all that I can to ensure that my trip goes smoothly. No, I am probably not the only one and it does not matter whether or not one is sighted.  I continue to use these strategies whenever I travel and they have helped me to stay on track.

Here are my tips, for what it is worth:
Book well in advance.
Print off your ticket information and hotel vouchers well in advance.
Create a document that contains email addresses and phone numbers for your friends and this should contain information such as: Flight info or train info, hotel info, number of days that you will be away, where you may be staying other than a hotel if applicable, and any medical info for insurances that you may be taking out.  Such as travel insurance or medical insurance.

Also include emergency numbers that can be called if necessary, for family and friends. I deem all of this to be very important.

Very important to note! Emergency kit for travel

Covid may be less of an evil at the present time but I still take my precautions.  When I know that it is going to be difficult for me, as a vision-impaired person to find things easily in public spaces, here are some items that I pack in my emergency kit and place in my carry on.

This is what I did on my most recent trips to Portugal and England and it worked so very well for me.  I was well prepared.

Hand sanitizers, wet wipes, and masks.  Then I also pack the staple things such as aspirin, Tylenol, and a tiny tube of toothpaste and a tooth brush. A handful of Life Savers candies and, of course, my trusty chargers for my phone and MP3 player.

There are always other things that you can add but for now that is it for me.

A bit fussy: Choosing the ideal hair brush

Call me fussy and a bit funny but every time I prepare to travel I need to ensure that my hair brush is just what I want it to be.  So here goes.

It must be the right size, big enough to fit in my hand.  The handle needs to be long enough for me to be able to maneuver it.  The bristles need to be rounded.  It must also be of a bright colour.

That’s my ideal hair brush, for what it is worth!  And I am sure that there are others who also have their ideal hair brush!

A good strategy: Planning for a trip

I do not think that it really matters when it comes to planning for a trip and I would say that the more I plan the easier it is to ensure that everything goes smoothly. So, here I go.

Choose a hotel that is known to provide accessibility features to me as a blind/vision-impaired person.
When booking with airline or rail, make sure to let them know that I, as a blind/vision-impaired person, will need assistance from station to station or airport to airport.  That is, from departure and back to arrival.
Plan events where I am comfortable that I would be able to enjoy activities that are accessible and navigable.
Make sure that if I travel with someone else who is sighted, that they are comfortable traveling with a blind/vision-impaired person and that they are fully aware of my needs and requirements.

Who is Santa Claus? By Donna J. Jodhan

He comes primarily at Christmastime but did you know that he is always with us?  Many of our youngest ones think that he lives in the far North but in reality he lives anywhere and everywhere.

In North America and colder countries, he makes his entry into our homes through our chimneys and the modern day Santa can also leave his presents outside the doors of our condos and town houses.  He can travel in so many different ways; on a sleigh, on a motorcycle, on a truck, by bicycle, by ship or boat, by plane or helicopter, and even on foot.  It all depends on where he is and what he needs to do in order to get where he needs to go.

Believe it or not, Santa Claus goes by so many different names and it can easily be said that he has several different aliases.  In the colder countries he is known as either Santa Claus or Father Christmas.  In the Eastern countries he is known as St. Nick and in the warmer tropical countries he is known as Sandy Claus!  Of course, there are other names for him as well.

To the wide-eyed kid he is the one in a red suit that wears a white beard and he has a huge laugh of ho, ho, ho!  He brings toys and goodies down the chimneys of homes and he hands out gifts at malls and at parties.  He shows up at parades; he hands out toys from open roofed trucks, and he lugs his goodies on bicycles, motorcycles and on his back.  He even drops off his gifts by ship, boat, helicopter, and plane.

This is who he is to those little ones who still believe in Santa.  However, there is more to this fat jolly man than just the one who does these things.

Whenever we smile at a stranger, nod a greeting to someone that we do not know, or take the time to give a gift to someone who is less fortunate than we are, these are all deeds of Santa's generosity. In essence, we too are Santa Claus in our own way but we do not have to wait until Christmas to do this.

The secret of Christmas may be this!  It's not the things you do at Christmas time, but the Christmas things you do all year through!  Taken from a Christmas song.

Merry Christmas from me!

Frustration! Difficulty accessing my phone messages

Just imagine when I discovered that I could not access my phone messages while traveling out of Canada. I simply could not do it.

I could not even get to the option to enter my password in order to access my messages. So I had to elicit help from my dear friend Gabriella to do this.

I had to give her my password and that was just fine. She did the rest but this was a new experience for me.

She had to send me emails with the contents of each message and it was strange for me to read my phone messages instead of hearing them firsthand.

On February 3rd, 2019, I met my Liverpool family after so many years.  The last time that I had seen them was when Lorraine, Mark, and Carl were little ones. This was the first time that I was meeting Sally and her boyfriend Joe, and Angie, and Tom, Carl's husband!

I am not sure what I was expecting but at the end of it all I could only utter the word, "Wow!"  For this is exactly what it was!  A dream come true! A family that I was so happy to have renewed acquaintances with!  A warm, loving, jolly, and welcoming family who accepted me for what I was! A long- lost cousin who was vision impaired and this did not bother them in the least.

We started by meeting at Tom and Carl's house where we had tea. Then it was off to visit the Liverpool Cathedral and then on to visit Christopher Grange. Everyone went to the Cathedral with me but only Lorraine, who drove, and Jilla came with me to the Grange.

The bulk of the evening was spent catching up at a wonderful pub where we sat for hours; chatting, exchanging stories, and promising to stay in touch!

The next morning found us around Tom and Carl's table. Tom, Carl, Angie, and Sally and her boyfriend Joe along with Jilla, having a sumptuous breakfast prepared by Tom.

Then we were on our way back to London with Jilla driving me.  What an experience for me!  What a wonderful time for me!  I'll never forget you, my Liverpool family!

Take care of yourselves now and I'll be seeing again soon!
