Just need to manage: Crunch time

 

I really do not enjoy dealing with crunch time and this usually happens whenever I am strapped for time, doing my best to fit everything in.

So, the best thing that could happen for me is to ensure that I plan everything ahead and also to ensure that I am able to accomplish my objectives.

I am constantly doing my best to avoid crunch time! I really do not enjoy getting into these types of situations! And as a vision-impaired person I really feel that it is necessary for me to take my additional challenges into account.

Not my favourite thing: Getting ready for a colonoscopy

 

I have yet to meet anyone who looks forward to a colonoscopy.  Yes, not a very nice experience, but for me as a vision-impaired person, it is all about me making sure that I have everything that I need in advance and then to be able to time myself when drinking that horrible liquid.

So here is what I do.  
First, I buy my medication well in advance.
The day before my colonoscopy I organize my medication on my kitchen counter and then decide as to when I start the horrible process.
I have my trusty timer close by to help me: Alexa.

Things go smoothly for me when I do this and I find it much less stressful using this strategy.

A good strategy: Planning for a trip

 I do not think that it really matters when it comes to planning for a trip and I would say that the more I plan the easier it is to ensure that everything goes smoothly. So, here I go.

Choose a hotel that is known to provide accessibility features to me as a blind/vision-impaired person.
When booking with airline or rail, make sure to let them know that I, as a blind/vision-impaired person, will need assistance from station to station or airport to airport.  That is, from departure and back to arrival.
Plan events where I am comfortable that I would be able to enjoy activities that are accessible and navigable.
Make sure that if I travel with someone else who is sighted, that they are comfortable traveling with a blind/vision-impaired person and that they are fully aware of my needs and requirements.

Time to get ready: Preparing for the holidays

This is probably not going to be any different from 2020.  The pandemic is well and alive so the same restrictions will be in place.

All of this being said, I intend to enjoy my upcoming holidays.  I’ll do my best to stay away from purchasing unnecessary things, just sticking to what is really necessary.  I’ll only attend functions if they fall within the requirements and restrictions of the pandemic, and I’ll find ways to enjoy the holidays from home.

I’ll probably be with Mom and the family for the holidays.  At least I am hoping so.

A fear of the unknown: Facing the Corona virus

Like so many others, I am not going to be alone when facing this virus! We are all in this together and I know that at least for the next few weeks, or even months, I am going to be staying in with probably a weekly trip to get my errands done.

I'll try not to listen to the news too often. I'll do my best to stay mentally on track, to make a daily schedule and stick to it. To reach out to my family and friends and most of all to check in with my mom as often as I can.

Am I scared? Naturally so but with God on my side I'll be just fine. I'll pray hard each time I feel sad or down. I will think positive thoughts each time my mind starts to wander down the wrong path or in the wrong direction and I'll look forward to that sunny day when can I see my mom and family again.

Some words of wisdom: Make sure that you take what you plan to

This is my drum beat and it is my strategy. This applies to my shopping trips and to my meals at restaurants.

I plan, make sure that it is what I seek, and do my best to get or take what

I plan to.

For if I were to settle for substitutes then it would be me who would be the

unhappy one and I would have no one else to blame but myself. So this is how I start all of my shopping trips: with list in hand and I make sure to

describe exactly what I seek.

I always show my list to the person accompanying me so that they know exactly what I am looking for. There is the odd occasion when I would need to expand because what I seek is not available. I believe that having a list in hand is not just helpful to me but also to the one with me.

In the case of restaurants, it is entirely up to me to ensure that I explain

and describe to the waiter exactly what I desire. In short, to speak up on my own behalf!

Exciting times: Planning for a Hawaiian cruise

I'd like to consider myself as a seasoned traveler who happens to be vision impaired. I also consider myself as one who takes extra time to plan and to do my best to avoid unnecessary obstacles. In short, I go the extra mile to ensure that I am more than prepared and this is going to be my motto for my Hawaiian cruise.

I print all necessary documents and even leave copies on my dining table for anyone who may need to read them while at the same time ensuring that only those who need to know will see them.

I pack meticulously and ensure that I only pack what I need and am able to find things in my suitcase easily and quickly. Each piece of clothing has its particular spot in my suitcase.

Finally, I make sure that for this Hawaiian cruise, I pack the appropriate clothes and things that are necessary. I must not forget to pack my trusted gadgets and I already know that I won't be able to use my iPhone on board

the ship due to imperfect wi-fi connections and exorbitant fees for said connections.

Developing a new strategy: Searching for the cotton balls

This was another experience for me: searching for cotton balls on Mom's dresser in her bathroom.  

The biggest hint was that they were in a small glass jar but I needed to ensure that I took my time to find said jar.  So, I needed to be extremely careful in navigating amongst the various objects on her dresser.

I developed a plan in that I started on the top lefthand corner of the dresser and worked my way across to the top righthand corner.  Then I would return to the lefthand side and repeat the process going from left to right and going downward.

After a few minutes I found my target and with very gentle fingers I lifted the lid and voila! I had found my cotton balls!

A new adventure: Starting a chess club

This has always been one of my things to try and do and up until now I have not had much success in doing so. But, thanks to Rebecca and Uwe, it appears that this is now going to come to fruition.

I will admit that I am not sure how much time I’ll have to devote to it but I am going to do my best.  

Chess is a wonderful game and it is one where there is a level playing field for everyone. That is, when playing face to face games.  

There is always going to be an edge for the sighted chess player when playing games via email or even on Skype, but I believe that this is one of the closest level playing fields we would find.

A new experience: Thoughts on planning an event

At the best of times, planning an event of any size is probably one of the most daunting tasks for anyone. But for me, as a vision-impaired person, the story only gets more daunting.

So many things to include. So many plans to make. So many allowances to take into account.  So many others to depend upon. I cannot do it all on my own.

I really need to concentrate and put my head down. I focus on things in the early morning when everything is quiet; no ringing phones, no incoming emails, and no dinging text messages.

At the end of the day, really no different for the person with vision.
