Easy as she goes: Packing carefully

 

Those travel tubes/cubes are a real bonus when it comes to my packing carefully. I previously referred to them as tubes but in actuality they are known as travel cubes.

Now I can organize things more logically.
Yes!  Tops go into one cube.  Underwear go into their own cube.
Then sleepwear goes into another cube.
I think that you get the point.

Thank goodness for these new wonders.

That's just me! Sorting out my winter sweaters

 Call me fussy but I just think that as someone with a vision impairment, it is imperative for me to know the colours of my sweaters and especially so when I am unable to see the them. And this is why I sort them before winter is upon us.

I need to know what colour sweater I am wearing so that I can fully imagine how I look.  I need to put the colours in alphabetical order in my drawer so that I am organized and feel in control.

When someone tells me that they like my sweater and that the colour suits me, I need to know which sweater they are referring to and what colour suits me.

Yes, I may be fussy but that’s me.  My winter sweaters and me and this applies to all of my sweaters as a whole.

It had to be done! Cleaning out my clothes closet

 

This has been an annual event for me and has taken place at the Canadian Thanksgiving time.  However, with Covid I had to put it on hold.

I’m back now and in 2022 I did more than just a clothes closet clean out!  I extended it to my office and, after all was said and done, I got rid of 9 boxes that included clothes, papers, and some old office equipment.

I have usually done this with Mom but for this grand event she was not with me.  So, I had to make darn sure that I was discarding the clothes that I really wanted to discard and not otherwise.

Thank goodness that I have always arranged my clothes closet very meticulously so as to know which clothes I am putting my hands on at any given time.  This made it easier for me and things went very smoothly.

In the case of my office discards, same thing here and all together it took me two weekends to complete the job.

A must do! Time to clean out

 

Ah, yes, and if I do not do this often enough then I am in huge trouble with myself.

I consider myself to be very organized but whenever things start to feel cluttered then I know that it is time to clean out.  This is what happened a few months ago.  

I decided that enough clutter had accumulated in my clothes closets and in my office.  So, I gathered up my strength and energy and attacked the task with as much gusto as I could. And at the end of a few days, it was all done.  Old and unwanted things were piled into boxes and thrown out.  Unwanted clothes were given away to charity.  Old papers were shredded and my office was cleared of clutter.

It sure made me feel better and refreshed.

Exciting times and great expectations: Choosing my suit for graduation

 Here is where I missed having Mom with me to choose my suit for my most important Graduation Day.  Nothing I could have done but to ask Stephie to help me and I will say that she did a super job of describing things to me and making sure that it fit.

A special suit for a very special day but without Mom to help and approve.  I prayed that everything would go well on this day and that the chosen suit would be good.

We went to the Laura’s store at the Fairview Mall and engaged a wonderful sales lady to help me.  Together the sales lady and Stephie worked diligently to help choose a suit for me.  Everything fitted well enough but I still missed having Mom around to give me the final nod of approval.  

We chose a tasteful dark blue pants suit with an inner off white blouse with eyelets.  It was folded very neatly by the sales lady and was now ready for me to pack in my suitcase.  The sales lady made sure that Stephie and I were able to have the use of a large fitting room and Stephie made sure that the sales lady had a look at whatever I tried on.  A day well spent!

Exciting times: Sorting out my tops for my Portugal trip

 

This is probably one of the most tedious tasks for me as a person with a vision impairment.  In this case I need to identify the tops that I wish to take on my trip, to know each of their colours, and to determine which pair of pants I am going to match them with.

This was so when I prepared for my trip to Portugal.  First, I asked Stephanie to help me identify the colours and next I separated them and then decided which pair of pants I would wear each of them with.  For me, everything needs to be super organized and very precise.  I sort, place carefully in my suitcase, and then make sure that I know where to find them when the time comes.  All of this after I have carefully determined which of my tops I am going to take.

You would think that with time it becomes easier for me but as this was the first big trip since Covid, it was indeed a matter of revisiting this chore.

Most important for me: What colour is my outfit

 

Now that I no longer have enough vision to help me decipher the colour of my clothes, I need to make doubly sure that I know what colours I am wearing.  So, here is my method.

I first use my colour detector to help me determine the colours and if I am not sure then I ask my wonderful neighbour, Sandra.  

For the most part, I have been able to stay out of trouble because of having organized my closet with Mom’s assistance, and if I buy anything new then I take great care  to ensure that I place identification tags on them and place them appropriately in my closet.  

I am happy with this method but I cannot be too careful.

Familiarizing again: Reacquainting with my closet

 I knew that this chore would come my way as soon as the pandemic allowed us to go out again.  Sure enough, it was quite a chore but good thing I had organized with Mom's assistance long before the pandemic descended.  

What I needed to do was to re-familiarize myself with the arrangement of my clothes and to remember the colours.  Thank God that I had my trusty colour detector to help me out.  Above all, it was a huge help to have had everything arranged in a semblance of order that I could easily decipher and re-familiarize myself with.

A humorous moment: Hunting down the elusive jersey

 

Looking back now I can only laugh at myself for having been just a bit too zealous, or well organized.  Or maybe just a bit of both.

This all happened when I went to take my clothes out of the dryer and fold them.  I meticulously counted each piece of clothing and then realized that I was missing a particular jersey.  So, off I went in search of it.

I searched the washer, the dryer, and the surrounding floor and carpet, but nothing.  I counted my pieces of clothing once more and still no sign of the missing piece and then, alas!

To my utter bewilderment and humour; I never washed it!  Just needless hours looking for a jersey that was never washed.

Exciting times: Planning for a Hawaiian cruise

I'd like to consider myself as a seasoned traveler who happens to be vision impaired. I also consider myself as one who takes extra time to plan and to do my best to avoid unnecessary obstacles. In short, I go the extra mile to ensure that I am more than prepared and this is going to be my motto for my Hawaiian cruise.

I print all necessary documents and even leave copies on my dining table for anyone who may need to read them while at the same time ensuring that only those who need to know will see them.

I pack meticulously and ensure that I only pack what I need and am able to find things in my suitcase easily and quickly. Each piece of clothing has its particular spot in my suitcase.

Finally, I make sure that for this Hawaiian cruise, I pack the appropriate clothes and things that are necessary. I must not forget to pack my trusted gadgets and I already know that I won't be able to use my iPhone on board

the ship due to imperfect wi-fi connections and exorbitant fees for said connections.

All in a day's work: My laundry day

For most of us laundry day could be thought of as anything from trying, challenging, and mundane to must be done or just another home task.  

For me, it is a bit of everything.  First, I need to ensure that I am going to wash exactly what I do, indeed, wish to wash.  Next, to make sure that I put each piece of clothing into the washer when I am ready to do the laundry. I am now halfway there!

Then, when the washer has completed its job, I need to ensure that I take every piece of clothing out of the washer and place it into the dryer. This applies particularly to ensuring that I do not leave my socks behind.  

Why is this?  Because of the small size of the socks and to ensure that my socks either do not fall on the floor or that they are not caught up in my sheets or some other larger piece of clothing.

Now comes the dryer, and after ensuring that every piece of clothing is in the dryer, I close the door and turn it on.  

Finally, I need to ensure that when I empty my dryer that I don’t leave anything behind in the dryer or that I don’t leave any piece of clothing on the floor.  This entails that I count each piece of clothing and make sure that everything is accounted for.  

That’s my laundry day.

What a shock! Packing the wrong pair of pants

Looking back on this particular experience I can only smile to myself. What makes it even more humorous now is that I only discovered it much later.

In the case of this particular pair of pants, I honestly thought that it was my black dress pair of pants and I had packed it to go along with a red dress blouse. I was supposed to have been traveling to Ottawa for a special function.

I ended up not going because of a snowstorm and did not unpack my stuff until about a week later.  Just imagine my surprise when I then discovered my error.

It turns out that the pair of pants that I had packed was purple! I guess that would have been quite an entrance for me if I had, indeed, ended up going to the function!

Being careful: What to wear?

I guess that when it comes to deciding what to wear, I am one of those who likes to ensure that what I wear matches.  In addition, that it is clean, no stains, and that things fit well.

When I had enough functional vision to see myself in the mirror and to match things, it was easier then. But now that I no longer have that luxury, I need to ensure that certain things are in place.

First off, that my closet is laid out in a certain way so that I know which outfit is which and that things are properly matched.  Here is where I depend heavily on good old mom to help me out here.

Mom certainly understands my needs and she and I have worked extremely long and hard with this.  Having previously had vision enables me to understand which jackets go with with which trousers and skirts and which colour blouses look best with which jackets and so on.

The challenge is for me to ensure that I have things in the right place because just one tiny slip can put everything out of whack.

So it goes and I simply accept this challenge and deal with it.

Refreshing times: Trying on new clothes

It is always a very new and refreshing experience each time I try on new clothes.  It is exciting and I simply love the smell of the new clothes.

Now that I can no longer see what I am trying on, I depend on my "eyes" (my mom) to do the describing for me.

Patiently and painstakingly, she does it.  Describing carefully.  Colour, style, type of material, length, and more.  She makes me try on more than once and is not satisfied until she feels that she has done her best for me.

I am not always as patient as she is but I do my best.

Always a pleasure: Getting ready for my annual vacation

I can honestly tell you that this is probably one of my most enjoyable events.  It happens every year whenever I visit Mom at her home.  We get ready for our annual vacation to St. Lucia.

We have been doing this since 2008; our annual getaway to sweet St. Lucia. So, here we go. It starts with me taking down our suitcases from the cupboard in Mom's room and then it moves along as we gather our clothes and other things for packing. Then it culminates with us packing and making sure that we have packed everything that we are going to need for our beloved trip.

Before packing my stuff, I make sure that I know what clothes I would like to take with me.  Then, very meticulously, I ask Mom to tell me if things match, if they are clean, and if they look okay.  Mom inspects my stuff and after she gives her stamp of approval, I do the finishing touches to my packing.

I am in charge of ensuring that all of our documents are in order.  I will have printed them off before I get to her home and she looks them over to satisfy herself that everything is in order.  We are now ready for our getaway.

Mom and I at work: Picturing the blouses

Now that I do not have enough vision to see what things look like, this is what I do each time that Mom is around to describe them to me.

In the case of blouses, I ask her to describe and she is just so great at describing.  She tells me the colour, the style, and what it looks like. Then she goes one step further to tell me what colour jeans or pants will match said blouse.  Finally, she tells me whether or not the blouse is dressy or casual.

This is how I deal with identifying blouses and it sure works.  No problem here.  Just another way to beat the odds, as they say.

Having some fun: The matching jacket and cane tip

Just imagine my big smile when Gabriella told me that my jacket and cane tip matched each other on the day when we were going out to run errands.

Truth be told, even when I had enough vision to match my outfits to my accessories, I never ever paid attention to it.  So, when Gabriella noticed this it was a huge first for me.

It is always nice when things do match but my poor old cane tip is never really in the picture when it comes to matching things.  Having had vision previously it is always nice to have things matched and even now that I do not have any vision, it still matters.

A funny experience: The mysterious hanger

I always try to do my best to make sure that I know where I put my stuff; particularly, where I put my clothes both inside and outside of my closet.

In particular, I am very conscious of where I leave my hangers because I need to ensure at all times that I can find them when I need them.  Whenever I am missing a hanger I spend precious time locating and putting it in its right spot with the associated piece of clothing.  However, whenever  I find an extra hanger I am forced to spend time trying to figure out from whence it came. 

This is what happened not too long ago when I found the extra hanger and this time it took me a bit of time to solve it all.  In the end, the hanger was found on the sofa in my room and the clothing for it was found lying on my bed.  All in a day's work.

Great times: Memories of the Tabi Stores

I have to admit that shopping at the Tabi stores was probably one of my most cherished and favourite memories.  Mom and I were treated to wonderful service from our favourite sales lady, Nouri.

Nouri was not just our favourite sales lady, she was a friend and a confidante.  Nouri always had time for us.  She helped us to choose our clothes, took time to make sure that we were happy and satisfied, and she always took time to chat with us.

I never got tired of shopping at the Tabi stores.  I loved to smell the new clothes and to examine all of Nouri's suggestions.  When I had enough vision to see what I was buying, I would simply love to spend time among the racks, matching and mixing outfits.

There are so many happy memories for me and even after she was transferred from the Fairview Mall to downtown, we still kept in touch. As I write this, I wonder what Nouri is up to these days and I can only wish and hope that she is well and enjoying whatever she is doing. Such a unique and unusual person!

Thank God for Mom: When my leather jacket acquired white spots

Trust me when I tell you that I would never have known this were it not for my mom.  Yes, once more, there was Mom to the rescue!

I had just come home from a function and had taken off my leather jacket.  I hung it on the back of my chair and then had gone on about my business.  I think that Mom has a very interesting habit of checking out my clothes every time I return home and it is a great way for me to make sure that I have not put stains or spots on them.

This time it was no different because shortly after I had hung it up, there she was informing me that there were white spots all over my jacket.  Nothing too serious but I had to take care of business or should I say that Mom had to take care of business for me.

She took care of things with a damp cloth and soon the jacket was back to its good old self. 

Ah, yes!  The challenges of someone who is vision-impaired, but let's face it!  Sighted people also face these same issues but they are able to see them while we need others to tell us.
