Hunting around: Searching for the fallen earbuds

Ah yes, and when they do fall, they often do not make any sound.  Especially so when they fall on a carpeted surface. So, this is why I am truly and doubly careful when handling my earbuds.

Sometimes they will make a plopping sound when they fall on the carpet.  That is, when they land on the earbud piece itself. Or, the sound may be like a quick loud pop as the earbud piece hits the carpet or tile or hard wood. But, if they fall on the cord then there is no sound.

So, what does this mean for me?  Just to be careful when handling my precious earbuds.
Especially so when I need to search for them.

I need to use my sense of hearing to help me locate them or then I need to use logic to try and locate where I believe they have fallen.

After searching: When the container was found

Whenever I go in search of anything missing, I need to call upon my memory more than anything else. That is, I need to use my memory to help me retrace my steps.

This once more was the case when I went looking for one of my containers.
I painstakingly used my memory to retrace my steps.
I examined each very carefully and presto! I found my missing container.

This strategy most definitely applies to almost everyone.

Persistent hunting: Finding the missing pen

As a vision-impaired person, one of the biggest challenges for me is when someone does not put things back in the place where they found them. This is what happened a while ago when someone borrowed my pen and after they left I could not find it.

So, with a deep breath I devised a little strategy. I retraced my steps and tracked every place where this person was seated. It worked like a charm!

I found my pen exactly where they had been sitting.

What a relief! My cleaned up storage cupboard

I can tell you that this was a very long time in coming and I have to thank Mom, Stephanie, and Nick for helping with this. For far too long everything in my storage cupboard was packed haphazardly, and now it is packed neatly and everything is orderly and organized in a semblance of logic.

No more having to scratch my head when looking for anything.
No more having to sort through all kinds of containers to find a specific container.
No more having to constantly be throwing out unwanted stuff.
As a vision-impaired person, it is so very important for me to be able to find what I seek and in a timely manner.

An interesting moment: When Confidence, the stick, got lost

This is the name that my mom has given to a broom stick!  It is tall and sturdy and she uses it to maintain her balance when walking around her home.  She is always so very careful to have it close by but on this particular day she did not remember where she had left Confidence and now I decided to help her search for it.  So, off we both went.

Mom using her keen eyesight, and I using my memory to help me check out possible places where she could have left it.   So, the search proceeded with sight and memory.

I found Confidence close to Mom’s bed and what a relief it was.  Confidence was propped against the bed head.  Relief for us both!

A funny moment: Moving the mop

I pride myself on being able to find what I am looking for in the quickest of time and I attribute it all to my organizing skills.  In short, I am always super careful to ensure that I place things in locations that I can easily access, find, and above all ones that are logical to me.

All well and good if I am able to keep to my strategy. But whenever things go off track, meaning that either someone moves my sought after object, or I forget where I have put it, then everything goes wrong.  And this is what happened when I could not find the mop.

Truth be told, I forgot where I had put it but there are the occasional times when someone inadvertently moves something around without telling me.

All in a day’s activity.

2 different searches: When the cordless went missing

So, we had a vision-impaired person and her mom, who is hard of hearing, searching for the missing cordless phone.  I meticulously went from room to room searching for it.  I ran my fingers across all of the surfaces in each room while at the same time I tried to retrace my steps from memory.

Mom used her keen eye sight to do the same and it was she who eventually found it.  There it was, safe and sound.  Sitting on her coffee table in her living room.

I took it all in, just realizing that we both used different search mechanisms to carry out our searches.

A humorous moment: Hunting down the elusive jersey

Looking back now I can only laugh at myself for having been just a bit too zealous, or well organized.  Or maybe just a bit of both.

This all happened when I went to take my clothes out of the dryer and fold them.  I meticulously counted each piece of clothing and then realized that I was missing a particular jersey.  So, off I went in search of it.

I searched the washer, the dryer, and the surrounding floor and carpet, but nothing.  I counted my pieces of clothing once more and still no sign of the missing piece and then, alas!

To my utter bewilderment and humour; I never washed it!  Just needless hours looking for a jersey that was never washed.

A frustrating experience: Hunting down the rubber band

This is probably one of the most difficult tasks for me, having to hunt down fallen objects that do not make any noise when they drop onto the floor.

Such things as rubber bands, plastic bags, loose leaf papers, and so on. The only time that I can tell that I need to go hunting for them is when I either miss them or I am somehow made aware that they have fallen.

Such was the case recently when the rubber band fell onto the kitchen floor. No, I did not hear it fall and only knew that it had when I went looking for it on my counter and could not find it.

So, off I went, meticulously searching and mildly scolding myself for not having been more careful.  I will tell you that most of the time I do find what I am searching for but there are definitely times when I am unable to find my prey, so to speak!

A laundry challenge: Finding the elusive static sheet

I can honestly say that doing laundry is often a bit of an event for me. Sometimes I need to go hunting for clothes that have dropped out of the dryer when I am unloading it.  Sometimes I inadvertently forget to take a piece of clothing out of the washer.  Then, sometimes, my socks get lost in the shuffle and I have to take time to find them.

The other day I had to add one new adventure to my laundry activities: searching for the elusive static sheet.  I had  put one of these sheets in my dryer among my clothes and after taking out the dried clothes, I then had to go looking for this static sheet.

I searched and searched; in my dryer, outside of the dryer, and on the carpet of my den where I had taken my clothes to fold.

Alas, it took days before I found it.  Lying on my carpet but some distance away from where I had folded my clothes.

Here we go again! Searching for the missing chess pawn

This is probably one of the more tedious tasks or hunts for me. Whenever a chess piece falls, I need to use my native logic to help me locate it. This is so because whenever one of these falls, it falls on my carpet and rolls away.

And this is what happened some weeks ago when a chess pawn went missing.  I had to rack my brain to develop a road map.  I searched my desk but then quickly realized that the chess pawn had fallen onto my carpet.  So, off I went to find it.

I would say that thanks to previous experience it did not take me as long to find my chess pawn and this time I did not have to ask my neighbour Sandra to help me hunt for it.  Indeed, the chess pawn had fallen and had rolled a little way ahead.   It was nicely nestled among the computer chords under my desk.

As a person with a vision impairment I must be more careful to ensure that I do not lose my chess pieces or any other tiny object.

A moment of patience: Trying to fix my Rosary

Not too long ago, as I was changing the sheets on my bed, I discovered that my Rosary which I always keep under my pillow had broken. That is, it had come unhooked and I was extremely unhappy.

This Rosary was very special to me as my mom had given it to me after my dad had passed on and I had guarded it with my life as it meant the world to me.

After several tries to re-hook it, I gave up. But before this, something else had happened. My precious Rosary had gone missing when I was changing my sheets and I spent several minutes searching for it. I had become very anxious and had even started to cry as I searched because I felt that without it I would not be protected.

I tried to be logical in my quest for my precious Rosary and when, at last, I found it, I kissed it. This is when I discovered that it had become unhooked.

I had first asked my friend Sue to help me and she did. But after it had, again, become unhooked it was my neighbour Sandra who helped me to permanently hook it again.

My precious Rosary is now back under my pillow where it belongs!

Frustrating for me: When the muffin fell

For me, there is nothing worse than when something falls from me and I do not know until it is too late. That is, when I either step on it, find crumbs or spills on my floor, or realize that something is missing.

This is what happened recently when my muffin fell from me. I knew that it had fallen but I did not know where it was. So I started to search methodically and then!

I found it all right; but it was in a heap of crumbs and so I had to patiently gather up the crumbs and then throw it away. This did not make my day!

Developing a new strategy: Searching for the cotton balls

This was another experience for me: searching for cotton balls on Mom's dresser in her bathroom.

The biggest hint was that they were in a small glass jar but I needed to ensure that I took my time to find said jar.  So, I needed to be extremely careful in navigating amongst the various objects on her dresser.

I developed a plan in that I started on the top lefthand corner of the dresser and worked my way across to the top righthand corner.  Then I would return to the lefthand side and repeat the process going from left to right and going downward.

After a few minutes I found my target and with very gentle fingers I lifted the lid and voila! I had found my cotton balls!

Now I can laugh about it! When the mandarin rolled away

Oh boy! I can only describe this experience as one that happened before; one filled with challenge and humor.

On this particular morning, the little mandarin slipped from my fingers and fell onto my kitchen floor and then it decided to roll away.

At first I thought that it had stayed somewhere on my kitchen floor, but no!  It did not!

After searching on my hands and knees and using my cane to help me search, I reasoned that because it had hit the side of my foot when falling, it probably ended up somewhere in my carpeted dining room. I was right.

So, with the utmost of care, I decided to get down on all fours and start searching. My main mission was to ensure that I did not squash it or step on it.

Bingo! I eventually found it lying close to the left leg of one of my dining room chairs. I did not squash it and it remained intact.  What a relief!

Extremely frustrating: Unable to open the pill on the card

I would say that this was probably one of the more frustrating challenges or experiences for me. First off, the pill was very tiny and then it took every effort on my part to carefully use my nail to punch a hole in order to enable the pill to drop into my hand.

Then I had to ensure that the pill had indeed fallen into my hand.  It was so tiny that I needed to search the entire palm of my hand to find it.  Then, when I found it, I had to take it gingerly from hand to mouth and then put it on my tongue.

I never knew that this would take such a long time for me to accomplish but there you have it.  Another challenge for me to overcome.

Humorous but challenging: Searching for the rubber band

Looking back on this experience now, I can only smile.  You see, when they fall they do not make any sound so one needs to use their sense of direction to try and determine where it could have fallen. That is, if you are blind or vision-impaired.

This is exactly what I did when it fell and whereas for a person with sight it is much easier, it is not for me as a blind person.  As long as I remember this, I’ll be just fine.

I had made up my mind that this search was going to take a few minutes but thanks to my internal GPS I managed to find said rubber band much more quickly than expected.

I went down on my hands and knees and began methodically to move my hands around. I was careful to move my hands in sync and over specific areas of my kitchen. I think that it took me about two minutes to find my rubber band and it was probably in the area where I felt it should be.

A moment of frustration: When the salad fell

I have to admit that it was quite a mess for me when my salad fell out of the fridge. So much of it fell out of the container and onto the floor and as a vision-impaired person I had to take some extra time to clean it up. And why?

Because I had to make very sure that I retrieved everything and this meant searching my kitchen floor far and wide on my knees. So, off I went, in search of rolling blueberries and walnuts.  It was easier to find the lettuce but those nuts and berries were a problem because they rolled all over the place.

They rolled under my fridge.  They rolled down my kitchen floor and then they rolled onto my hall's carpet.  All together I must have spent about half an hour gathering up everything and even then I stumbled upon some stray berries a few days later.

All in a day's work.

A bit of a challenge: Searching for the missing chess piece

A few months ago my favorite technician came over to help me with some stuff but after he left I realized that one of my chess pieces had been knocked off the board but I did not hear it fall.  My office is carpeted so sometimes it is difficult to hear when anything falls.

So, off I went to hunt for it.  It was the white rook and if any of these chess pieces are lost then it is next to impossible to use the chess set for a game.

I used my logic to try and find my white rook. I was in luck!  Nestled there was my lost white rook.

This is the strategy that I often use: logic and a package of patience to go along with it all!
