A must do! Packing the medications

I need to be super careful when I pack my medications. If it is a long trip, I put all of my diabetes related medications in a bag and in another bag I put my other medications.

If it is just a short trip, I repeat the same process but this time I put them in those handy dandy daily reminder containers.

I need to concentrate very deeply when carrying out these important tasks. One small glitch on my part or a simple mix up can get me into big trouble.

Thank God for Mom's eyes: When the pill fell

 

At the best of times and for anyone, whether sighted or not, it is almost always a challenge to retrieve a fallen pill. For me, and as someone with a vision impairment, it is even more difficult and especially so whenever the pill is a capsule.

Capsules do not make any sound when they fall and on this day thank God that Mom came to my rescue. Mom did not take long to find it and return it to me.

Just think of the mess that it would have made if I had stepped on it. I cannot be too careful when taking pills out of my bottles.

Humourous but serious: When the pills got mixed up

Oh boy and what a day! You can say that I never look forward to this type of adventure as when it happens I have to backtrack, sort out my pills, and then make sure that I know which bottle of pills is for what purpose.

Thank goodness that on this occasion it was not my medication; instead it was a mix up between 2 of my vitamins. I only discovered this by pure accident and at the end of the day it was not too bad.

Both bottles were the same in height, size, and the pills in each bottle felt the same. I only realized that there was a mix up when the pills in one bottle finished before the ones in the other. Thanks to my counting I realized my error.

Extremely frustrating: Unable to open the pill on the card

I would say that this was probably one of the more frustrating challenges or experiences for me. First off, the pill was very tiny and then it took every effort on my part to carefully use my nail to punch a hole in order to enable the pill to drop into my hand. 

Then I had to ensure that the pill had indeed fallen into my hand.  It was so tiny that I needed to search the entire palm of my hand to find it.  Then, when I found it, I had to take it gingerly from hand to mouth and then put it on my tongue. 

I never knew that this would take such a long time for me to accomplish but there you have it.  Another challenge for me to overcome.

An interesting experience: When the pill rolled off the counter

Looking back, now, this particular memory was one that was a very interesting one.  I had brought my vitamin pills out to the counter and had laid them out but I needed to fetch some juice in order to wash them down.

So, off I went to get my juice and upon returning I discovered that I could only find two of the three pills.  At first I thought that the missing pill had just rolled away on the counter, but I was wrong.

The pill had actually rolled off the counter and had fallen onto the floor and now I had to use my logic to figure out where it was.  Sure, I could have asked my mom to help me locate it but this time I wanted to do my own searching.

So, I composed myself and then I began a methodical search on the floor, trying to figure out which direction the pill had taken.

This paid off quickly for me because before I knew it my fingers had found the missing pill.  Score one for me on this day.

A need to identify those bottles of pills

I am always so careful to ensure that whenever I need to get more than one bottle of pills from my pharmacy, be they prescriptions or not, I have to ensure that I know which bottle contains which pills.

True it is that I could identify through different sizes and different covers, and many times through the different shapes and smells of the pills themselves. But what if some of the bottles are of the same size and the pills feel the same?

Sure! It happens from time to time and you may be wondering then what do I do.

First off, when I realize that there could be an identification problem, I get to work with my friendly pharmacist. Next and very carefully, I ask the pharmacist to tell me which bottle is which and then I use tape to help me.

I put the tape on the bottles but there is more than this to it. If two bottles are of the same size, then tape goes onto one bottle and the other is left without any tape. The trick is for me to remember which bottle of pills has the tape.

So this is my trick. I go in alphabetical order. Example: Aspirins and Gravol. I put tape on the bottle of Aspirins and the bottle of Gravol is left without any tape. If I have three bottles then Aspirins will have the tape on the cover. Gravol will have tape at the bottom of its bottle, and Tylenol will not have any tape.

I do my best to ensure that all bottles of pills are easy to identify for me and my friendly pharmacist is usually so ready and willing to help me.

When the pill fell

Looking back at this particular memory, I can laugh now but at the time it was no laughing matter. Yes, the pill was bound to slip off the counter and fall to the floor one day or the other and when it did I was not quite ready to go hunting for it.

I barely heard it when it came tumbling out of the bottle. It was a small round pill and one of those capsules. I heard it plop onto the counter but then and alas! It continued its journey and fell to the floor. The one good thing is that I knew that it did so now I had to put my senses to work and go looking for it.

First I descended gingerly to the floor keeping in mind that I did not want to step on this tiny thing and squash it because if I were to do so then I would have a mess to clean up. Very slowly I did this and then I put one hand at a time on the floor. Next my knees one at a time and then I went methodically inch by inch. Sure enough I found the tiny pill soon enough. It had rolled and lodged itself into a corner between the baseboard of the cupboard and the wall. I was very fortunate that it had done so because it could have stayed in the middle of the floor. This would have been a more difficult task for me.

All in a day's journey.

When the bottles got mixed up

And I can tell you that it was, indeed, a mix up! You see, I did not take the time to distinguish them as I almost always do and this time around I paid the price but luckily my senses of smell and feel saved the day for me.

I had put both bottles next to each other on my counter and for a split second my focus had left me and I soon found myself in trouble. The bottles had gotten mixed up.

You can guess it all right! It all had to do with pills. The bottles felt the same: same height, same size and shape. But at the bottom of each bottle, here is where I found the difference and this, indeed, saved me from getting into further trouble.

Both bottles were supposed to have contained vitamin pills. The pills had the same shape but as I stood there carrying out my examination, it dawned on me that they had to smell differently and so I put my sense of smell to work. Presto! The smells were indeed different and after confirming what I thought they should be I then went to work to check the bottom of each bottle. Sure enough, I found the difference. There were dots at the bottom of each bottle, sure enough, but the shapes were different.

So what have I learned? Just to be more careful the next time.
