I pride myself on being able to find what I am looking for in the quickest of time and I attribute it all to my organizing skills. In short, I am always super careful to ensure that I place things in locations that I can easily access, find, and above all ones that are logical to me.
All well and good if I am able to keep to my strategy. But whenever things go off track, meaning that either someone moves my sought after object, or I forget where I have put it, then everything goes wrong. And this is what happened when I could not find the mop.
Truth be told, I forgot where I had put it but there are the occasional times when someone inadvertently moves something around without telling me.
All in a day’s activity.

A tedious task: Rearranging my fridge
Every so often I take time to rearrange my fridge, and trust me when I tell you that this is one of the best time savers for me.
It keeps me on my toes and it also keeps my memory up to date and in check. By rearranging my fridge I am able to keep tabs on things and when I go to fetch anything I know exactly where to look.
This cuts down on my stress and frustration levels. I get to arrange my fridge in a logical order that I can make sense of.

Always a pleasure: Reacquainting with Mom's home
This is one of my annual summer events: reacquainting myself with Mom's home when I go there to spend time with her.
It is really not that difficult because she rarely changes very much around, nor does she rearrange too much. Nevertheless, she is always there to show me what she has done.
She is so very proud of her home and she ought to be! Everything has its place! Things are arranged in very simple and logical order and it is never difficult for me to find anything!
Her cupboards are arranged in total order and every item has its place! From the food cupboard to the kitchen cupboard and from the medicine cabinets to every single drawer!
I can always find what I am looking for and I don't get lost whenever I am searching for something. It is as if she knows exactly what to keep out of my way so that I do not bump into things!
She knows exactly where everything is and bless her! Her directions for me whenever she asks me to fetch something are precise and on the money!
That's Mom and her home!

Humorous but challenging: Searching for the rubber band
Looking back on this experience now, I can only smile. You see, when they fall they do not make any sound so one needs to use their sense of direction to try and determine where it could have fallen. That is, if you are blind or vision-impaired.
This is exactly what I did when it fell and whereas for a person with sight it is much easier, it is not for me as a blind person. As long as I remember this, I’ll be just fine.
I had made up my mind that this search was going to take a few minutes but thanks to my internal GPS I managed to find said rubber band much more quickly than expected.
I went down on my hands and knees and began methodically to move my hands around. I was careful to move my hands in sync and over specific areas of my kitchen. I think that it took me about two minutes to find my rubber band and it was probably in the area where I felt it should be.

Finding Mom's pills
This was quite an experience for me, recently, when I went to find Mom's pills. She was lying on her couch and having difficulty with her knee and she had asked me to find her pills so that she could take one with a glass of water to help with the pain. So, off I went as per her instructions and directions.
As it turned out, it was not all that difficult after all. Before setting out to find her pills I told her to be as explicit as possible and she was exactly that. I went to her cupboard, felt around on the shelf that she had directed me to, to the correct side of the shelf, and to the precise box.
Mom was bang on. She knew exactly where her pills were and she knew how to describe each step of the way to me. Success!

This is a personal message from author Donna Jodhan
"Each time we raise our voice at someone else we are engaging in bullying! Each time we raise our hands to slap or punch someone else we are also engaging in bullying and each time we engage in actions to either manipulate or force someone else to do what we want we are also engaging in bullying!
There is no room in this world for bullying and each day we fail to take action against bullying it is another day that we allow others to bully us and our kids. Our heroes and role models are the ones who have made us proud; those brave young men and women who gave their lives for us in past wars and those who continue to do so. They are not the ones who choose to be racists and those who believe that their bad behaviour in public is acceptable.
I write and record audio mysteries that are being used at such events as murder mystery evenings as well as at public awareness and team building events. I promote understanding, tolerance, and problem solving and my audio mysteries continue to be broadcasted around the world and you can listen to them anywhere! On the plane or train! In the car or right there in your home! On your i device or computer!
Please join my campaign against bullying (CAB) by supporting my efforts to keep on writing and recording!
If you truly care then you will certainly dare!"

Learning the Way
For me, learning the way is always one of my best techniques when it comes to dealing with unfamiliar territory. It is best for me because it makes me more independent. When I had enough vision, I used to depend on such landmarks as counting pathways and driveways; counting doors and cubicles; using color and contrast to help me identify places; and even using contrast between sidewalks and grassy embankments. I also used to count hallways and corridors and use contrasts between carpeting and bare floors. In short, I used a combination of my limited vision and my sense of direction to do it all. I also used sounds and my sense of smell to help me.
That was then and this is now. Today, I use my cane a lot more to help me count doors, corridors, hallways, and driveways and pathways. I am no longer able to use color and contrast to help me but that's okay. Having previously had vision enables me to picture layouts in a room because believe it or not, most rooms and hallways have similar layouts and if you have been lucky to have seen the physical layout of such things as a reception area, classroom, or office, it sure helps.
I use the so-called touch technique with my cane to help me locate carpeting and I trail the edge of carpets to help me orientate myself. I depend more heavily now on sounds and my sense of smell. Believe it or not, smell helps me to locate different places such as: Cafeterias, restaurants, and even certain offices and other areas.
I'm Donna J. Jodhan your friendly accessibility advocate wishing you a terrific day and encouraging you to go out there and tell others how blind persons find their way. Visit www.nfb.org to learn more.
