Near and dear to me: Description of the Holy Manger

I know that every Holy Manger is always arranged differently and it all comes down to one’s perspective and outlook.  For me, I have a certain vision of the Holy Manger and I formed my perspective when I was able to see enough to see it.

Now, without adequate vision, I need to depend on others to describe it to me.  That’s very okay because the spice of it all is in the wide versions.

Lots of fun! Image descriptions by Angie

Slowly but surely my family and friends are becoming great at describing images to me whenever they send any via email.  This is what happened recently when Angie sent me 2 images of baby Nina.

Her descriptions were so very clear and focused.  She described what Nina was wearing along with the expression on Nina's face.  So much so that I was able to perfectly picture in my mind what this precious baby looked like.

Angie was so very gracious about it all and certainly got it! Thank you, Angie!

Meet the A team! The hearing aid and the seeing eye

I am the hearing aid and Mom is the seeing eye. I hear for us both and she sees for us both.

For the most part, our team of two works very well together. She tells me and describes everything to me as we walk around in the mall or eat in restaurants. She does not miss very much and her descriptions are complete. She is the seeing eye.

She describes what people are wearing, what is on the display racks, and whatever else she sees as we travel around.

For me, as the hearing aid, I do my best to tell her what people are saying and asking. My job is to ensure that she knows what is being said and what is being asked but I need to ensure that she hears me. This means that I need to go very close to her and articulate as best as I can.

This is hard work but I do not see any other alternative. This is the hearing aid and the seeing eye at work.

Priceless treasures! Running commentaries from Mom

I am so used to these now that I consider them to be an integral part of my life.  That is, whenever we visit each other.  From sitting quietly together in front of the TV to dining together at our kitchen table.  From dining out at a restaurant to walking in the mall or grocery shopping or walking outdoors.

These are the running commentaries that I have grown to expect and love. They are given so selflessly, freely, and so kindly and humbly. They are given from the heart!  They are given without me even having to ask!

They are filled with unique descriptions, expressions, boundless opinions, and so much more!

Ah, yes! That's my mom and these are her commentaries!

Truly wonderful memories: Mom's description of Independence parades

I don't think that I could ever ask for anything more: Mom's description of Independence parades.  Her commentaries are bang on.  Concise, precise, filled with colourful descriptions, and then there are the thoughts and opinions that she shares.

She is there when it all begins and she stays right up until the end.  I sit close by listening to her commentaries and I enjoy every bit of it.  It usually takes about two hours but we don't mind spending time with Mom describing and me listening.

I can still picture these parades in my mind, but now that I can no longer see them I have another way to enjoy them.

Refreshing times: Trying on new clothes

It is always a very new and refreshing experience each time I try on new clothes.  It is exciting and I simply love the smell of the new clothes.

Now that I can no longer see what I am trying on, I depend on my "eyes" (my mom) to do the describing for me.

Patiently and painstakingly, she does it.  Describing carefully.  Colour, style, type of material, length, and more.  She makes me try on more than once and is not satisfied until she feels that she has done her best for me.

I am not always as patient as she is but I do my best.

Mom and I at work: Picturing the blouses

Now that I do not have enough vision to see what things look like, this is what I do each time that Mom is around to describe them to me.

In the case of blouses, I ask her to describe and she is just so great at describing.  She tells me the colour, the style, and what it looks like. Then she goes one step further to tell me what colour jeans or pants will match said blouse.  Finally, she tells me whether or not the blouse is dressy or casual.

This is how I deal with identifying blouses and it sure works.  No problem here.  Just another way to beat the odds, as they say.

Great excitement: My yellow cell phone

For anyone who knows me well enough, they will easily tell you that the color yellow has always been my favorite.  So, when I found out that my cell phone was yellow, nothing could have been more pleasing to me.  Except for this!  I never knew that it was yellow until months later after I had bought it.

It sure made me smile because if anyone had asked me to describe my poor old cell phone, I would have been hard put to tell them what color it was. However, my saving grace could have been that my cell phone's screen had dots on it.

Just another funny experience for me.

Enjoying my time: Megan's description of onstage action

I am always so delighted whenever I can sit next to someone who is only too willing to explain what is happening on stage to me.  And this was the case at a conference in late September 2017.

My table companion, Megan, did a superb job of describing everything to me. The scene was one of teens depicting several different scenes of their peers in various situations.

These situations included peers rejecting each other, turning their backs on each other, asking their fellow peers to include them in social activities, and so on.  I truly enjoyed Megan's descriptions and at the end of it all this particular session was much more valuable to me.

Now that I can no longer see what's happening on stage it is always a luxury for me to be able to know.

A refreshing experience: Description of a new building

It is always very interesting to me whenever I am in a situation where I ask someone to describe a new building to me.  Of course, a picture is worth a thousand words and this means that no two persons would ever describe a building in exactly the same way.

This is what happened in September 2017 when I attended a conference in Ottawa and I had the luxury of having several persons describe a building to me.  I knew from the outset that this would happen so I was ready.

I took all of the descriptions and went to work to take a piece from here and one from there and by the time I was finished I was able to put together a reasonable picture for myself.

A new experience: When the bank changed

It was quite an experience for me when, in the late spring of 2017, the Royal Bank branch at the Bridlewood Mall began renovating its facilities.  For so many years I had been used to the layout, so when I was told what was happening I had to develop a new way to navigate my favorite branch.

I had always been able to visualize this branch's facilities because I had been able to see what it looked like when I had enough vision.  Now it would be different and I would need to depend on others to describe things to me.

My mom and my friends, Sue and Gabriella, have done a masterful job at filling me in and the staff have been so good at helping me out.  However, it is not quite the same when someone else describes things to you.

Remember now, a picture is worth a thousand words and no two people describe things to you in the same way.
