More than just an annoyance: When technicians fail to put back

And here again is yet another big challenge for me. I know that technicians are mainly focused on fixing a problem and in so doing they simply forget to put things back where they found them.

Or, they do not put the new replacements in the spot where they removed the old ones.

Or even more, they move a piece of furniture and do not put it back.

All of this happened when the Cable company’s technician came to my condo to work on my problem. They never replaced things in the right spot. They did not put back my furniture and I went crashing into my dresser.

What to do? I am just not sure as most of them simply ignore me.

Just another challenge! Switching to a new cable box

This is what happened a few months ago when my cable company switched to a new cable box. I had to learn how to navigate my box. I had to learn how to use the new remote.

Thank goodness that this new remote enables me to input my channel changes via voice.

The technician was helpful and then I had Sandra and Nick and Susan to complete my familiarization.

Frustrating times! Losing cable

I guess that most of us take it for granted that our cable will always be there for us but I have learned the hard way that my cable service should never be taken for granted.  No!  I am extremely fortunate to have cable service in the first place because there are literally millions in this world who do not have this luxury.

It feels like having one of my fingers removed whenever cable service goes!   My home goes very quiet because my TV stands waiting for cable service to return.  Most of the time it returns quickly but there are times when it goes off for hours.

I often smile to myself when I think of the good old radio that never fails me.  It is always there for me, whereas with cable!  Well, I must be thankful for cable service!

So frustrating for Mom: When the cable died at Mom's house

When it happens then we are both stuck.  I cannot see to help with the boxes and Mom’s limited technical ability is not quite enough.

We try to work together to solve the problem but in the end we need to ask Carl to help us.

The house grows very quiet when this happens and we are both anxious to have it come back.  Carl is very good and very quick and thank God for him.

My neighbour and my friend: Sandra to the rescue

Even now, after having developed ways to get my cable box back on track after an outage, I still have problems from time to time whenever my temperamental box decides to show me who is the boss, so to speak.

Things have improved but whenever I am unable to get the box back on track I need sighted assistance. After the blackout of a few months ago, my dear neighbour Sandra came to my rescue.

Good thing she was home.  She came as soon as I called her and quickly got the temperamental box back on track.  Somehow I always feel so out of sorts whenever my cable fails me but I am getting more used to dealing with this.

Patience and persistence: The continuing fight with my cable box

One thing is for sure, I definitely intend to win this fight, come what may.

This fight has been going on for several years now and I don't think that it will ever end. No, for as long as I am unable to communicate with my cable box independently, this fight will continue.

There are days when I do get the better of my cable box; days when I am able to figure out how to reinitialize it and to get it working but then there are those moments when, as I put it, my beloved cable box refuses to cooperate with me.

I will admit that the good days are starting to outnumber the bad days so this is goodness. The main challenge for me is that I need to use my logic to overcome my lack of vision because I am unable to take advantage of visual cues. Hence, my dependence on audio cues from my television.

So very frustrating: When there was no cable service

On this particular morning I woke up to a very interesting experience. I had turned on Mom's TV and there was no sound.  At first I thought that something might be wrong with the TV but when I turned on Mom's second TV I was met with the same situation. No sound.

So, I waited until Mom had come into the kitchen and together we started to troubleshoot.  Soon I decided to phone the offices downstairs to see if they had cable service and they did.

After some discussion with Mom I phoned the cable company and after going through the normal checks with the service rep it was determined that Mom's cable service was cut because there had been an error on her bill. This being that she owed some money to the cable company.

This was straightened out in quick order and the happy ending was that Mom received her cable service once more.

It was not a very good day: When the cable box died

Well, I am not ashamed to tell you that I have probably never had a very good relationship with my good old cable box so a few months ago, when it died, I was very relieved.

This box has never been accessible for me. Whenever it stopped working I had a devil of a time getting it restarted and I always had to depend on sighted assistance. Most of the time it was my Super, Nick, who came to my rescue.

On this Friday morning, when Nick informed me that the box had died, I did not jump up and down for joy. I simply breathed a sigh of relief and did as he told me.

Nick unplugged the box, wounded up the cords, and packed it in a bag for me. Then I was off to the mall to get a replacement.

There is nothing worse for me than having to depend on sighted assistance to reset my cable box.

A continuing annoyance: Trouble with my TV

It sure never ends. Between my TV and my cable box, who knows which one of these is going to send me to my grave! 😊

It is always a challenge whenever I do not have a pair of eyes around to tell me what's happening on the screen and I think that the only way to beat these two devices is for me to use my reasoning power and logic to help me combat.

So this is what happens.

I turn on my TV and there is no sound except for a noise that tells me that it is on. There is no cable reception because as I use my remote to flick upwards or downwards, I do not hear any sound except for that of the TV.  That is, the same sound exists on all channels.

I unplug my cable box and it makes a loud crackle and then I plug it back in. Next, I use my remote to turn on power and establish communication with my cable box. Then I wait patiently.

After about two minutes I use the buttons on the TV to start moving downwards in order to locate channel 3.  This is a very challenging and daunting task because I cannot tell which channel I am starting from.

Then I hear the welcomed sound of a channel.  Looks as if I have finally hit pay dirt because I have managed to re-establish my cable connection.

If my mom is visiting then she takes care of this challenge but if I am on my own then it's me against the TV and the cable box.

All in a day's work.

Something new to learn! Learning to manage my cable box with Sandra

I have no guilt feelings when it comes to the continuing fights that I have with my cable box.  In short, I am not very happy with my cable box and at times I have been hard pressed not to pick it up and throw it through the window.

The other day my neighbour Sandra came over to try and help win the battle, but alas!  I am still fighting with the darn thing.

Here is the problem.  Each time there is a power outage my cable box needs to be reset.  Sure, I can unplug the cable box’s power cord and then plug it back in after a few seconds but here is where my abilities end.  I have no idea what is on the TV’s screen let alone be able to put my TV back on to channel 3.  Sure, I can use the buttons on the TV to flick but do I go up or down?

Sandra realized this when she tried to help me.  So, I am still seeking a solution.

A challenge: When the cable box refuses to cooperate

Now, whenever my beloved cable box is in a good mood then there is nothing preventing it from working like a charm.  However, whenever it feels in a mood to be either nasty or that I do not seem to be doing something right, then here is where things can get very testy.

When these moments occur, and because I have no way of knowing what is being displayed on the screen of my cable box, I am practically in limbo. If there is no sighted person around to assist me, then I am truly at a loss.

How I wish that we could have access to talking cable boxes.  What a great thing this could be.  At least for a sighted person it is easy for them to see the display and lights on the box, but alas!  For me it is practically impossible.

Sometimes I get lucky using the methodical approach. I reconnect with my cable box by pressing buttons that others have shown me, but I can tell you that these times are not always there for me.

Ah, yes!  The joys of interacting with my cable box.

Is the TV On?

One of the daily challenges that I face is this one:  How can I tell whether or not the TV is on when I first turn it on?  Well, it's totally by trial and error and several of my friends use different techniques but here's mine for what it is worth.  My first job is to find the correct on/off button to press and after I have done so, the next thing is to ensure that I press it in the right way.  One task done and one more to go.

If I hear sound immediately then I know that I have pressed the right button to turn it on and now it's time for me to find my channel of choice.  I have to ensure that I know the locations of the following buttons before I can do anything else; the numeric keypad to select the channels, the up and down selector key, and the volume up and down keys.  If I do not make sure to familiarize myself with these keys then I am in huge trouble if I have any hope or expectation of being able to use my TV effectively.

If I do not hear any sound when I press the on/off button, then there are three things for me to consider:  First I have to make sure that I have pressed the right button.  Second, if I am sure that I have pressed the correct button I then have to move to step two and that is to determine whether or not the cable is working or whether or not electricity is on. I will stress that it is important for me to know this because if after I am sure that I have turned on the TV I do not hear any sound, then there are two things for me to investigate.

First I need to make sure that cable is working and I can do this by flicking from channel to channel.  If I hear a static sound as I travel from channel to channel this will tell me that there is nothing on the screen on the various channels and I will know that cable is not working and I have to wait for it to return.  If I do not hear that tell tale static sound then I have to check to see if electricity is on or off and I can do this by checking other appliances to see if they are receiving electricity.  My radio, stove, fridge, microwave, and so on.

If electricity is there, and I am very sure that I have turned on my TV, then I can assure you that trouble awaits me.  Yes, you probably guessed it!  My TV is not working.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan your friendly accessibility advocate wishing you a terrific day and encouraging you to go out there and learn more about how blind persons function on a daily basis by visiting www.independentliving.com.
