A new learning experience: Developing new ways to communicate with Mom

 

If anything I have been forced to develop new ways to communicate with my mom.

Why?  Because of her hearing challenge.

So now this is how I do it.
I go up to her chair.
I touch her on the arm.
When she responds I either talk directly to her or I point towards the thing that I wish to talk about with her.
She is so very quick to understand.

I have also learned that I need not raise my voice when communicating with her.
I must first lower the television and then speak in an even tone to her.
It is working.

Never stop learning! Learning more about hearing challenges

 

Thanks to my best friend Char and my friend Mark, I am learning so much about hearing challenges.  At the end of the day it is all about me developing more patience, learning to use my own sense of hearing to help Mom, and giving her every chance to be my partner!

In short, she is my eyes and I am her ears.  We have come a very long way but for me there is much more work to do!  It is a constant learning process for me and what helps is Mom’s positive attitude, her limitless patience, and her propensity to not give up!

She has taught me so much in my lifetime and I am so very lucky, humbled, and privileged to have her as my mom!

An improvement: Mom's new hearing aids

 I think that Mom’s new hearing aids are working, for the most part.  She is very meticulous about making sure that she wears them and that she recharges them every night.

Truth be told, I still need to do what I have been doing ever since she got her first set of hearing aids several years ago.  

I need to go close to her when speaking with or to her.  I must speak clearly and moderately.  I need to ensure that only one person speaks to her at a time when I am around her.

If I do all of these things then all will be well.  It is not always perfect but absolutely good enough.

Getting used to Mom's hearing aids

I just need to come to terms with how Mom’s hearing aides work.  They will never be perfect for her but they will help her in a much better way.

All that I, and others, need to do is this:
Face her when interacting with her.
Go close enough to her.
Let one person at a time talk to her.
Lower the volume of the TV before you talk with her.
Most of all?  Be patient!

A necessary combination: Hearing and seeing

 

This is how Mom and I engage and communicate with the rest of the world.  I hear for her and she sees for me.  It did not take long for us to coordinate and pool our resources.  On the whole it works very well, but every now and then it is I who needs to readjust my techniques to meet her needs.  

I have to face Mom head on or directly when speaking with her.  I have to be close to her and I have to use the right voice level when speaking with her.  

On the other hand, Mom uses her very keen eyesight to guide me.  She is very precise with her directions and knows exactly what she wishes me to find and inspect.

All in a day’s life.

It's the new way! Communicating with Mom

 It sure makes things interesting when a vision-impaired person, me, needs to engage and communicate with my mom who is hard of hearing. It does not work if I shout at her because I have learned that shouting does not have any affect, and why?

Because she will more than likely not be paying attention at any given time.  So what do I do?

I have been told that I need to get close beside her and then tap her on the hand or shoulder to gain her attention.  The challenge for me is to find where she is sitting or standing because I cannot always determine her location.

It has been very interesting and challenging for me but with a bit of hard work it is slowly getting better.

A new challenge: Searching for the hearing aid

My poor, precious Mom!  She has enough problems ensuring that her hearing aids stay firmly in her ears but when she has to wear her mask and her glasses along with said hearing aids, well!  It is definitely not very pleasant.

Fairly recently after having returned home from shopping, she lost track of one of her hearing aids and we both had to spend time tracking it down.  We searched all of the shopping bags, Mom’s purse, and checked the counters.  I even took my cane and used it to check under the cupboards and counters and under the stools, chairs, and tables.  We must have spent almost half an hour looking and checking.

Then finally Mom found it!  Nestled in the elastic of her mask.  What a relief and I personally thanked God that she had found it.  These little devices are so easy to lose track of!  And poor Mom is constantly checking behind and inside her ears to ensure that they are there.

No big surprise for me! The other person in the hall

I have been using this strategy for several years now ever since I lost my vision.  It all has to do with combining my senses of smell and hearing to help me decipher or determine if there is anyone else around me.

This is what I do whenever I go out early in the morning to take my garbage to the chute. At that time the hallway in my condo building is dead quiet and I can even hear my footsteps echoing along the carpet as I walk.

I quietly open my door, slip out of my doorway, and gently close and lock my door.  Then I proceed to walk as silently as I can down the hallway, carefully carrying my garbage bag.

My antennas are on full alert.  I have deployed my senses of smell and hearing as I walk and I am ready to discover whether or not there is anyone else in the hallway.  On most mornings there is no one but a few months ago there was someone standing in front of the elevator as I approached.

I said good morning and he responded but I could tell that he was shocked that I knew that he was there.  He asked me how I knew that he was there and I smiled and said that I had smelled his sweet-scented after shave!  He laughed and wished me a pleasant day.

Thought for today: What does social distancing mean to me

At the best of times this becomes a real challenge for me as a vision-impaired person. I need to find ways to ensure that I am doing it the right way. I need to make sure that I know where people are. I need to make sure that I am not too close to anyone. I need to pay more attention so that I can hear what's going on.

Then, when I need to wear a mask while social distancing, this is when things could become a bit dicey and even a bit scary. For instance, I need to make sure that people can hear me well enough because of the mask and that I can speak loudly enough for them to hear me.

Remember now, because of social distancing I cannot touch anyone and they are unable to touch me. More challenges to take into account.

Famous magic words! Where is Mustard?

This is what I asked Mom when she first got her hearing aids. We were at the hearing clinic and she was being tested and fitted for her hearing aids.

She was sitting about five feet in front of me and the Audiologist asked me to say something to her. I asked her, "Where is Mustard?" and her immediate response was, "Mustard is in the zoo!"

I shall forever remember these words because I knew then that Mom was now hearing me loud and clear! She was once again hearing and now it was time to make sure that she stayed with me and the rest of the world, using her new

toys!

A new strategy: The ‘who is here’ technique

It has taken me a while to perfect this technique, or strategy, and I have had to put some extra thinking into it due to the fact that I can no longer see enough to know who is close by.

I use my senses of hearing and smell to help me out. In determining who is here, who is close by, I first need to determine if, indeed, someone is here. After ascertaining that there is someone close by, and I do this either by

smelling or sensing the presence of someone, I take the next step.

I would probably speak a greeting and most times this works as the one who is close by would often respond. If they do not and I still believe that there is someone close by then I would proceed to use my cane to check around me to see if there is someone or not.

If there is no one then that’s okay. But if there is someone and they do not respond then my mind goes into concern mode and my next step would be to again utter a greeting. In almost all of the cases, the person standing there would say something and if they do not then I know that something is not right and I would next proceed to take defensive tactics.

An interesting experience: The little bird

On a cool October’s fall day in 2019, Stephanie and I were witnesses to a very interesting experience in the church parking lot after blind tennis was over.  Stephanie relayed the following commentary to me as she stood outside her car, enjoying her cigarette, and I was sitting in the passenger’s seat.

It started with a soft thump against her right back window, and when she checked a baby bird lay on the ground close to the car. He had inadvertently crashed into the back window. Stephanie proceeded to guide the stunned bird towards the closest wall and as we waited we heard the baby bird starting to sing sweetly. Then there was a rustle of wings overhead and behold! Mama bird was hovering over her little one.

Then she was flying close to her baby, answering his singing, and soon he was upright and his little wings were poised in readiness for flight. Soon mama and baby were flying close to the wall and ascending quickly and gracefully. They sounded as if they were talking to each other and very soon they were up, up and away!

Respecting the limits: Realizing

Yes, it is all about realizing my limits; when to push ahead and when to stop!

I use my sense of smell to help me do a lot of my navigating. Next comes my sense of touch and then my sense of taste. But the most used sense is my hearing.

All of my senses work in tandem and I need to depend on each in separate ways. Sometimes it is fun to realize but on occasion it is not as fun.

Ah, yes! Just another lifelong experience.

The luck of the draw: Immigration officers at Pearson Airport

I don't think that the immigration officers at Pearson Airport should be considered any differently than others that I have met throughout my travels.

There are great ones, some not so great ones, and ones that continue to disappoint me. There are ones that are friendly, ones that are simply doing their jobs, and others who seem downright unhappy to be in their jobs.

I cannot say that male officers are better than female officers and visa versa. The same for older officers versus younger officers. I guess that what I am trying to say is that it all comes down to the luck of the draw.

I simply listen carefully to the tone of the officer's voice when choosing how to interact. A friendly tone has me smiling all the way and a stern or serious tone has me adopting a similar approach.

They are nothing but a pain! Dealing with those persistent lizards

For me it is very difficult to deal with these creatures who do not seem to know when they are not welcomed!

I remember once seeing what they looked like as they crawled along the banister of our balcony and that was quite enough for me. Today, I can no longer see them but I can certainly hear them!

They make a clapping sound when they are around us. I do my best to chase them away by either shouting at them or clapping my hands whenever I hear them. Sometimes it works but at other times it does not.

For me it is extremely difficult to deal with situations where I have no idea what is close by and I only discover something whenever a noise is made.

Lizards are definitely not my favorite friends. They are not welcomed and I just want them to go away.

Another interesting experience: Navigating Mom's bathroom scale

I guess that every scale is a bit different when it comes to being able to navigate it in order to know exactly where to place one's feet when preparing to get weighed. For me, I have a talking scale which I find to be just the right size.

There is a bar at the top of the scale that is in the middle of it. I place one foot on each side of the bar and wait seconds to hear the results. I can hear the results in either pounds or kilos.

In the case of Mom's scale, I need to depend on Mom or sighted assistance to get my results. True it is that her scale is quite a bit smaller and there is also a small bar in the middle of the scale at the top of it, but the trick is to place my feet in the correct position or else my weight will not be accurate.

Then Mom also needs to ensure that the scale is on and working before I get onto it. She needs to ensure that the batteries are functioning before we start our weighing session.

Meet my team! Mom and me at the airport

She is my eyes and I am her ears. She sees everything for me and I hear everything for her.

We rarely miss much. We are both very comfortable in our roles. We help each other and we protect each other. We look out for each other and we explain things to each other.

When agents explain things, I listen and then I relay info to Mom.  I need to speak a bit loudly to her so that she can hear me.  Whenever agents approach and start speaking, Mom tells me that they are speaking to us and then I do my part.

We make an excellent team.

It requires a wee bit of patience: Selecting the right radio station

I have to admit that every time I need to select a radio station, it means a wee bit of a challenge for me.

This normally arises either when I have somehow lost my favourite radio station or when I am looking for a new one.

I have to admit that I am a creature of habit so most of the time I am listening to the same radio station.

So, how do I find it if I have lost it?  With no guiding support, that is I am unable to see the numbers on the screen of my radio, this is my strategy. Two of my radios are tuned to my favourite news station and the other two are tuned to my favourite music station.  So, when I lose my way on one radio I have a backup and I use this to help me find my way back to the station.

Pleasant listening: What happens when rain falls

For me, as someone who is vision impaired, it is always a very interesting experience, and for better or worse there is nothing that I can do about it. 

Firstly, if the rain is heavy then my ability to navigate around myself is greatly hampered because I am unable to hear what is close by.  I cannot hear what others are saying to me and I am lost because I become disoriented.

Then come the puddles that I am forced to try and avoid.  I have to walk gingerly and use my cane to try and locate the puddles. 

If I am with someone else then I need to place my trust in them when walking, in that I would trust them to lead me around the puddles.

I love it when rain falls because I get to hear the raindrops drumming on my windows. Or if I happen to be in the Caribbean I can hear them falling on rooftops.  I also like to hear the cars driving through the puddles and making splashing sounds as they go.

A springtime favourite: Awaiting the doves

This is probably one of my favourite annual springtime anticipations, the arrival of the doves to give birth to their little ones on our balcony.

This balcony is just outside my office and each year the adult doves come by for a visit which lasts for about a month or so.

I know that they have arrived when I hear them on a quiet early morning as I work in my office.  I can hear them chatting with each other and it does not matter that I cannot see them because of not having nearly enough vision, they are most welcome to my balcony.

Then, a few days later, I can tell that something has occurred: yes!  The birth of some little ones but I do not know how many.  Then, from here on in it is a total delight and pleasure for me.

Each morning I look forward to hearing them.  I start work at around 3 am and they already seem to be awake.   I can easily distinguish between parents and kids; the voices are very different to my ear.  The little ones have voices that are soft, sweet, and hesitant while the parents  are bolder and more authoritative.

I estimate that my feathered guests stay for about a month with me and then they are gone.  The family moves out without notifying me but I know that others will be back next year.
