Careful as she goes: Emptying the water bucket

All that I can say is, easy as she goes. The water bucket at Mom’s home is being used to collect water whenever Mom’s ceiling leaks after a rain shower. So, here is how I conduct my business.

I place my slippers directly in front of the bucket to accurately mark the spot where the bucket is. Then I carefully lift the bucket and walk slowly with it for emptying.

Next I return the bucket to its place making sure to place it in front of my slippers.

I am happy to report that this strategy works like a charm.

Laughing as we go: Running through the rain with Mom

I have to admit that this was, indeed, a very amusing day. Here we both were, doing our best not to get too wet in the rain. Mom was actually running; doing her best not to fall and to go a bit more quickly than usual. Then here I was, doing my best not to fall and to make sure that we stayed in step.

The rain was coming down pretty hard and we needed to scurry out of the supermarket and then to run across the parking lot. I had to put all of my trust in her guidance because I could not see where we were going.

It was a matter of the blind leading the blind, in a way, despite Mom having full sight. My trust was severely tested but at the end of the day we did just fine.

Pleasant listening: What happens when rain falls

For me, as someone who is vision impaired, it is always a very interesting experience, and for better or worse there is nothing that I can do about it. 

Firstly, if the rain is heavy then my ability to navigate around myself is greatly hampered because I am unable to hear what is close by.  I cannot hear what others are saying to me and I am lost because I become disoriented.

Then come the puddles that I am forced to try and avoid.  I have to walk gingerly and use my cane to try and locate the puddles. 

If I am with someone else then I need to place my trust in them when walking, in that I would trust them to lead me around the puddles.

I love it when rain falls because I get to hear the raindrops drumming on my windows. Or if I happen to be in the Caribbean I can hear them falling on rooftops.  I also like to hear the cars driving through the puddles and making splashing sounds as they go.

Memories for a lifetime: Playing in the puddles

It has been and will always be one of my very special things to do whenever I have nothing else to do.  If this makes any sort of sense to you then I invite you to read on.

As a child I remember purposely looking for puddles outdoors each time it rained.  I would either step in them and swish the water around with my feet or I would simply stand there looking down at the water and just enjoying the images in it.

Vision or no vision, it continues to be such a pleasure for me.  I simply think that puddles are one of the extra enjoyments of nature.  They are placed there for a reason!  For people like me to enjoy and mull over. 

I don't seem to get enough of playing in the puddles these days, and why?  Because I am just a wee bit too busy these days but this needs to change and change soon!

I miss my puddles!  I miss hearing the sound of my swishing feet, whether with or without shoes! I can no longer see the images in the water but I have my memory to help me out here.

Listening to the falling rain

Ah yes!  One of my favorite times to relax, whenever I have the chance to listen to the sound of falling rain.

For some reason falling rain is so very relaxing to me.  The sound of rain falling either on a rooftop or in the street puts me into a mood of reflection, relaxation, and it is the time when my memory rushes off and searches my memory bank for some of the more cherished memories.

I can bring back memories of days gone by when I could see things around me and when I was able to visually appreciate more.  Vivid images and pictures appear in front of me and it is very much like a slow motion movie with me as the only spectator in a deserted cinema. 

I either sit or lie and enjoy it all!  I take it all in one moment at a time and after it is all over I slip into a comfortable journey to dreamland.  Ah yes!  Listening to the falling rain.

What happens when rain falls?

It’s funny, but when I had enough vision to see things, I used to enjoy watching the silver raindrops race each other down the glass of my windows. I can still remember and visualize this picture and I can still remember walking in the rain and watching these same beautiful raindrops scoot down the lenses of my glasses.

Even then and even now, I am really no different than a sighted person when it comes to rain. With or without vision it is almost the same for me. The differences may come as follows: Whereas a sighted person can almost always avoid puddles, I can’t. I used to be able to do so when I could see better but not now. It is difficult for me to carry an umbrella because of having to use my cane. I do not really like wearing rain hats because then my sense of hearing is somewhat muffled.

So what do I really do when rain comes? I am very careful when I step outside. I manage as best as I can and I am happy with how I do it.
