This time it was Susan coming to my rescue to help me clean up the dried flowers that had formed a healthy heap on my carpet. Once again, I would never have known that the carpet was littered with dried flowers and leaves from the wonderful bouquet of flowers that Jane and Richard had sent me for my birthday.

Susan got to work quickly and in no time she had cleaned up my carpet. Thank you, Susan.

Thank you Shane! Shane And The Flowers

 Thank goodness for Shane! When he entered my condo he immediately noticed that the petals from my flowers had fallen and had scattered everywhere. He immediately went to work.  

He picked up the messy heaps of flowers and deposited them in my garbage.

I probably would never have known until I went to check on my flowers, a birthday bouquet from Richard and Jane.

Like a breath of fresh air: Easter lilies

Ah yes!  What would I do without my precious Easter lilies?  They are my hope!  They are my Easter joy and my way of filling my home with freshness and fragrance!

Mom and I have always had a tradition of buying Easter lilies at Easter time. And now that she is no longer able to visit me at Easter time in Toronto, it is just another way for me to keep up those memories of Mom and me celebrating Easter together.

For me, Easter lilies represent so many memories, so many things, and will always be in my heart!

My favourite time of the year: Those fragrant Easter lilies

Ah, yes and these sure are very fragrant and it sure does so much to enrich my Easter time experience!

As they often say, blind/vision-impaired persons probably possess a keener sense of smell at the best of times, but nevertheless for me! Those Easter lilies sure fill my heart and mind with warmth and all good feelings.

I simply love to touch them, smell them, and I just stand there next to them and appreciate them!

They bring back so many memories of unforgettable moments to me!  I smile as I interact with my precious Easter lilies!

A work around: Describing my plants to me

 

Now that I no longer have enough vision to see my plants, I need to have someone describe them to me after Nick has bought them and installed them.

It all starts with my telling Nick what I would like to have.  This being what colours I would like as that is always his first question.  Then he purchases them and brings them up to my balcony.

Next he installs and arranges them and then completes his tasks by cleaning my balcony and windows.  Then I go out to spend time with my new plants, touching them and familiarizing myself with them.

Finally, I ask my friend and neighbour Sandra to describe them to me.  This is the fun part for me!  Finally she takes pictures of them with her phone, sends the pictures to me, and then I print them and send them to Mom in her monthly FedEx box so that she can see what my plants look like. All in a day’s journey.

One of my favourite times: Getting ready for planting season

 

It was no different for planting season 2022 and I welcomed it with opened arms and a huge smile!  Of course, my trusted Super, Nick, was right beside me to help out.

Now that I can no longer see to choose my colours, I ask Nick to select them for me and he chooses whichever colours I tell him.  Next he asks me for my choices of plants and I tell him.  Then off he goes and soon he is back with a shopping cart filled with plants, soil, and watering cans.

Nick is very fast and precise and within half an hour he is done planting my plants on my balcony.  After this he cleans my balcony and all of my windows and all is done in about two hours.

I simply love planting season and it does not matter that I cannot enjoy my plants visually; it is just enough to go out there every day and touch them and smell their fragrances.

My spring and summer delight: A description of my new garden

Oh, yes, my balcony garden that was lovingly and kindly planted by my Super, Nick.  He did this for me in late May and he simply lit up my balcony with lots of colours and flowers.

Bright yellow lilies standing up straight and proud.  Flowers of purple, white, orange, and red!  Six lovely pots adorned with all of these flowers. Two large pots, two medium sized pots, and two smaller pots!  All arranged in a t-shape.

I am so very careful with my beauties!  I check them every day to make sure that they are not too dry and that they are not wilting under the intense humidity.

I may not be able to see their physical beauty but that's just okay.  I touch them and enjoy them anyway!

Taking care of business: Propping up the flowers

Written in Spring 2021

Boy, oh boy,  this needed to be done!  I had to ask Nick, my Super, to come to the rescue.

Nick is so very handy and it was not a problem for him to do it for me. Within 10 minutes it was all done.  He trimmed my overgrown plants, then he used sticks to prop them up.  Now they are all nice and neat and ready to continue on their way for summer and fall.

I am just happy that I have them to look after.  Mom had gotten them for me some years ago and she made sure that they were well on their way.

She has certainly made an impression! My orchid the star

She came to live with me in mid June and she has quickly established herself as a bright star in my home. The moment that Stephanie introduced her to me, I knew that she would be mine!

After taking but a few seconds to inspect her and after Stephanie described her to me, I knew that she had to go home with me and so she did!

Sandra and Stephanie have taken several photos of her and I have sent them to Gayle so that she could show them to Mom so that she could see her, my star.

My orchid is a star! She is tall, slender, and of a deep purple colour. Even Nick likes her, saying how wonderful she is.

She has been blooming ever since she arrived! What a lovely orchid she is! Does not matter that I am unable to see her! It's enough for me to just touch her! That's my orchid!

Mom's pride and joy: Lilies on Mom's patio

My mom is just so proud of the lilies on her patio and she is never tired of telling me how pretty and lovely they look. For me, I am always so pleased to hear her descriptions.

At one time I was able to see what they looked like; that is, when I had functional vision. So now it is not too difficult for me to visualize them.

Their flowers are plentiful when in bloom. They hang low to the ground and they emit a wonderful fragrance. However, they may not be lilies after all. They may be known as ground orchids but Mom and I lovingly call them lilies.

I always look forward to visiting them whenever I visit Mom's home. I simply love to touch them and admire their strong stances.

She is the newest addition: My new orchid

She has been a part of my home for several months now. I bought her in March and she quickly became the star! She is a deep purple, tall and so elegant and graceful.

I may not be able to see her but it is enough for me to be able to feel her and water her.  She sits in my living room and she gets the morning sunlight.

She has figured prominently in some of the photos that friends have taken for me which I have sent to Mom. Everyone simply adores my beloved orchid.

She is strong, she is beautiful, and she will be a huge part of my life for as long as she wants. Here's hoping that she stays with me for a very long time.

Forever my treasured memory: My beloved buttercup

So many memories for me to love, cherish, and guard forever whenever I think of my beloved buttercup. I thank God that when I first met this beautiful flower I had just enough vision to appreciate it! 

She was tall, yellow which is my favourite colour, and she was so smooth and strong. I met her when I was just a wee one and I always looked forward to when our teachers would take us for walks up the hill.  

There she was, just waiting for me to come looking for her. Our teachers would show us where to find the buttercups and then they would help us to pick whichever one we wished.

Sometimes I would pick just one but most of the time I would pick two or three.  Then I would hold them fervently in my little hands, holding onto them with all of my tiny might.  

I would touch them gently, hold them upright, and simply admire their bright yellow colour.  I would bring them up to my nose and smell them and there was a sweet smell that was not too strong; just strong enough for my nostrils.

Oh, how I loved these beauties of nature and they bring back so many super childhood memories for me.

The new light of my life: My lavender plant

Lavender is probably my most favourite fragrance. It reminds me so much of spring time. So, in February of 2019, I decided to treat myself to an early spring present in the middle of a wicked winter. 

On a very cold winter's day, I bought Ms. Lavender at the supermarket and brought her home to be a part of my family. She stands tall and proud on my kitchen counter and her fragrance is strong and constant. I take time each day to visit with her for a moment and to say hi.  She continues to grow and I look forward to having her with me for a very long time.

A snapshot memory: Remembering Edwards Gardens with Linda

It was a cool spring morning when Linda and I went walking through Edwards Gardens in Toronto.  The air was fresh and clean.  The sun was nice and warm and we could hear the birds calling to each other.

We strolled leisurely through the Gardens, listening to nature as we walked and chatting amiably.  I could hear woodchucks.  I could smell the perfume of the flowers and I especially enjoyed listening to the fast-flowing rivers whenever we crossed bridges.

The paths were crowded with others out for the same reason as us.   Everyone seemed to be enjoying the same things, wonderful weather and communicating with Mother Nature.  Everyone seemed so intent on soaking up everything that Edwards Gardens had to offer that day.

What a lovely memory for me and I was sure glad that Linda took the time to spend the day with me.

So long ago but never to forget: The gardens in Montreal with Bernice and Harold

This is probably one of my most delightful memories of Bernice and Harold. Bernice was my economics professor at Concordia University in Montreal and ours was a very special friendship.

Bernice went out of her way to befriend me when I was her student and our friendship grew to include her husband, Harold.  We went so many places and the Botanical Gardens in Montreal was just one of them.

On a bright, sunny, summer Saturday the three of us visited these marvelous gardens.  Bernice and Harold and I walked around for several hours and simply took the time to explore and discover.

We walked among the colourful flower beds that were overflowing with all kinds of flowers.  We enjoyed the beautiful weather and simply soaked up the ambiance.  We saw so many different things, ranging from fast-flowing brooks where kids were playing in the cool water with their boats and canoes, to couples walking hand in hand, young boys playing soccer and baseball, and toddlers being driven around by their parents and older siblings.

Such a gorgeous day with such very special people; I shall never forget Bernice and Harold.  They have both passed on now and I thank them both for having come into my life.

A cherished memory: The Botanical Gardens in Trinidad

As I write this I can still vividly remember so many wonderful childhood memories of times spent frolicking with my family in these Botanical Gardens.   How well I remember running and playing with my siblings and cousins.  Playing ball with my parents.  Running and chasing our beautiful dog, Yella.  Walking along the various paths, riding the scooter, and so much more.

I always used to cherish those times when my parents would tell us that we were going to the Gardens and then I would race to get ready.  It was almost always a family outing with my parents, brothers, and granny getting into the family's car.  We often went there on late evenings but there were the morning outings, as well.

Then, whenever my cousins came over to spend time, my parents would take us to the Gardens.  Yella often came, as well, but sometimes we left her at home and I can tell you that she was not a happy dog!

Those wonderful fragrances of blooming flowers, birds singing in the trees, lush green grass and laughter of other kids around us shall forever remain in my mind.

This shall linger forever in my mind: Mom's special birthday

It was so very special for Mom and it was a time when I got to enjoy the celebration with everyone describing everything to me. On a previous special birthday I had enough functional vision to see what was going on, but not this time.

That did not hinder my enjoyment. I used my imagination to picture the entire birthday dinner. We took Mom to a lovely upscale restaurant and Martha took pictures with her iPhone.

I could tell that Mom ate with much gusto and really enjoyed herself.  She received flowers from the family and as I stood by while she received them at home, I pictured my mom with one of the biggest smiles on her face!

Thanks to my imagination and having had functional vision previously, I can still follow along and enjoy.

Such treasured memories: Remembering the White Rose Nursery

This was one of my favorite haunts, as they say: visits to the White Rose Nursery and I was so very sorry to see it close.  Oh, how much I used to enjoy going with Mom and Gabriella to choose plants and all kinds of decorations.

At the beginning of planting season, which was in May, we would go there to choose our flowers.  I still remember how very colorful they were, from impatiens to begonias and from marigolds to so many other types of plants and flowers.

We would start outside with the outdoor plants.  Mom would lead the charge with Gabriella and me following closely behind.  She would meticulously choose and then allow us to pack them gently in the cart.  Next we would venture indoors to pick up the plant food and other supplies.

In November we would return to choose our Christmas decorations and, oh, how much I cherished these visits.  There were all kinds of decorations, from ornaments of all kinds and sizes to hollies and poinsettias.

As I sit here writing this, the colors are simply dancing around in my head. All of the sights and sounds of that good old White Rose Nursery are very much alive in my mind!  Oh, how much I miss White Rose!  Another memory for me to cherish and I am sure glad that I was able to take all of this in while I had functional vision.

A very special person: Saying goodbye to Radhika

When it comes to exceptional persons, the ones who really stand out for some reason or other as you travel along the path of life, Radhika easily falls into this esteemed and illustrious category.

I first met Radhika in 2011, after she had delivered flowers to me through the Sears Canada, Flowers by Sears service.  She simply grew on me and over the years she became one of my very favorite people.

Radhika was always so very willing to accommodate my needs.  She went above and beyond the call of duty.  She always made my floral arrangements extra special, with colors that she knew that I liked and then she would slip in some very special ornaments.

When I visited her floral shop in May 2017, I simply enjoyed the fragrances of her flowers and I could tell how packed her shop was with all kinds of flowers and plants.

Thank you, Radhika, for having come into my life and a special thank you to your wonderful daughter, Ria.

Interesting experiences: Cleaning up the flowers

This is probably one of the more interesting tasks for me on a daily basis. That is, when I need to clean up the flowers.

This usually occurs whenever I receive flowers from Mom or friends. I need to make sure that each day I clean up the fallen flowers or make sure that I find and remove them from my arrangement.

At first it was a chore for me but now I think that I have it down pat and to a science.  Each day I check around where the arrangement is and I clean up the dead flowers that have fallen off.  Then I check the arrangement itself and painstakingly make sure that there are no dried up or dead flowers.

I place the dead flowers in my dust pan and after making sure that I have checked thoroughly I take my dust pan to my garbage and empty it there. This method works for me and it's all in a day's work.
