Who is Santa Claus?
He comes primarily at Christmas but did you know that he is always with us? Many of our youngest ones think that he lives in the far North but, in reality, he lives anywhere and everywhere.
In North America and colder countries, he makes his entry into our homes through our chimneys and the modern day Santa can also leave his presents outside the doors of our condos and town houses. He can travel in so many different ways: on a sleigh, on a motorcycle, on a truck, by bicycle, by ship or boat, by plane or helicopter, and even on foot. It all depends on where he is and what he needs to do in order to get where he needs to go.
Believe it or not, Santa Claus goes by so many different names and it can be easily said that he has several different aliases. In the colder countries he is known as either Santa Claus or Father Christmas. In the Eastern countries he is known as St. Nick and in the warmer tropical countries he is known as Sandy Claus! Of course, there are other names for him as well.
To the wide-eyed kid he is the one in a red suit and wears a white beard and he has a huge laugh of ho, ho, ho! He brings toys and goodies down the chimneys of homes and he hands out gifts at malls and at parties. He shows up at parades, he hands out toys from open roofed trucks, and he lugs his goodies on bicycles, motorcycles and on his back. He even drops off his gifts by ship, boat, helicopter, and plane.
This is who he is to those little ones who still believe in Santa. However, there is more to this fat jolly man than just the one who does these things.
Whenever we smile at a stranger, nod a greeting to someone that we do not know, or take the time to give a gift to someone who is less fortunate than we are, these are all deeds of Santa Claus's generosity. In essence we, too, are Santa Claus in our own way but we do not have to wait until Christmas to do this.
The secret of Christmas may be this! It's not the things you do at Christmas time, but the Christmas things you do all year through! Taken from a Christmas song.
Merry Christmas from me!

The Christmas feeling
Christmas for me is simply a plethora of feelings, emotions, and so much more. Christmas for me is a season where so many memories race across my mind. I can tell you that Christmas for me can be viewed in two different ways: as someone who has precious little vision and as one who once upon a time had enough vision to see so much.
When I had enough vision to see many things I could appreciate the flickering candles in Church, the flashing colored lights as I skated around an outdoor rink, crowded streets with scurrying shoppers, Christmas trees loaded with decorations and presents piled high beneath, tables loaded with dishes of food, and of course! Santa Claus! I used to spend so much time in the toy departments admiring the dolls and doll houses. Drawing sets and coloring books. I used to help decorate the house and always enjoyed putting up the angels, the lights, and most of all the manger with all of the figures.
Now that my vision has dwindled to almost nothing, I have all of these memories to bolster my enjoyment of Christmas, and in addition I use my senses of sound and smell to help me continue enjoying. Fragrances of burning firewood, pine, baking cookies, and turkey and pork all help me to conjure up pictures and images of years gone by. Sounds of bells, kids laughing, Santa Claus ho ho hoing, and the scraping of blades on ice add to my happy memories. You see, I have so many ways to recreate, reproduce, and make new memories.
Christmas as a blind person could be really interesting. So much to enjoy and so much to share with others. Christmas through the eyes of a blind person could be a very different perspective for many. You can learn more by visiting www.acb.org.

Some day at Christmas
One of my favourite Christmas carols is "Some Day at Christmas," made popular by the late Michael Jackson. Yes, some day at Christmas, when I could wake up on a peaceful morning and welcome yet another special day with my loved ones around me and the Christ Child in my heart.
When I would be able to say, "Finally! All is well and now blind kids will have an equal opportunity to be like their mainstream counterparts." When they can play with mainstream toys and be able to use cell phones and IPods just like sighted kids. When they would be able to play with games just like their sighted friends and not have to worry about inaccessibility. When their classrooms and playgrounds would be free of accessibility barriers and they would have an equal opportunity to be just kids!
Some day at Christmas, when I could go to bed just before Santa makes his rounds, knowing that all of my wishes have been granted. That all websites have been made accessible. That all supermarkets and stores have been made fully accessible to blind persons. That online courses and distance learning have all been made accessible and usable to blind persons. That blind persons have equal access to all reading materials in the same way that sighted persons do.
Some day at Christmas, after Santa has come and gone, leaving a huge package for me under my Christmas tree, I could wake up and say, "Finally! The banks have finally gotten it! Their ATMs are now fully accessible. Blind persons can now access all point of sale devices and touch screens without having to ask for sighted assistance. Blind passengers can now access kiosks at airports, they can enjoy movies on board aircraft, and no more problems at airports, train stations, and bus terminals for them."
Some day at Christmas, as I sit quietly in a church along with others waiting for the Christmas Mass to begin, I could say, "Thank you, God, for ensuring that from now on society will treat blind persons as normal persons who can function on their own and the only thing wrong with them is that they are unable to see."
Some day at Christmas! Ah yes, it is only my dreams but who says that dreams don't come true? The smell of cookies baking in my kitchen is real! Christmas carols being played around me are real! Children laughing and families decorating are real! Is it too much for me to ask Santa to help make my dreams come true?
The late Steve Jobs made some of my dreams and those of other blind persons come true! Dare I dream that there could be another Steve Jobs out there just waiting to bring hope to the blind world?
I'm Donna J. Jodhan wishing you a very merry Christmas! Joyeux noèl! Feliz Navidad!

The Christmas kids
I really don't think that it matters how old we are when it comes to enjoying Christmas. We are all kids in our very own way and I am probably one of the biggest kids when it comes to Christmas.
Yes! It is my favorite time of the year. Just to hear the kids themselves as they shout with glee! As they sing with joy! As they whoop with excitement whenever they see Santa Claus or they find something that they have been looking for! Ah! Just to be a kid at Christmas!
For me personally at Christmas, being a kid in my own way is really not describing it fully! I guess that I have always been a kid at heart. I love the toys. First, the electronic games and gadgets. Next come the dolls and doll houses with all of the furniture, and tea sets. Then come the puzzles, the bats and balls, and then finally everything else that makes me smile! In short, anything that makes a noise, anything that beeps, talks, and anything that enables me to create, imagine, and develop!
Christmas is for everyone and age is no barrier. No gift is too big or too small. There is a kid in each of us and all we need to do is to let it all hang out. It is not as difficult as you may think. Just let it happen then sit back and enjoy! It is what I do every year and you know what? I really don't have to wait until Christmas to do it! I can be a kid anytime I want! It is just that it is so much more fun being a kid at Christmas time! It is so much easier to be a kid at this time of the year!
The sounds and smells! The ambiance and the songs! The sites and events! For after all! Was it not then when the greatest and most famous kid was born? Our Lord Jesus Christ?
I'm Donna J. Jodhan wishing you a very merry Christmas!

Christmas is for me no matter where I am
Yes! You got it right! You heard me correctly! No matter where I am and no matter what I'm doing! Christmas is for me!
I could be spending it in Canada where the winters are icy, the snow is falling, the winds are howling, and I could practically hear Santa chuckling, Christmas is for me! Or I could be spending it in the sunny Caribbean where Santa could be seen in either a jeep, standing in an open truck, or even on a motorcycle, Christmas is for me! No matter where I am, this very special time of the year is for me!
There are some very special things that many parts of the world share in common: the birth of Jesus, gift giving, greeting each other, Christmas goodies, toys, and the singing of Christmas songs and carols! So many things in common for us to share!
No matter where I am, all of these things will be with me! From a snowy winter with skaters skating on an icy rink with Christmas lights winking in the background and bystanders drinking hot chocolate, to a deep blue sea with swimmers swimming lazily under the watch of bright blue skies, Christmas will always be the same! It is not where I will happen to be! It is all about the spirit of Christmas! Remembering what Christmas really means to me! The giving, the greeting, the joy, the special hopes and wishes for others, but most important of all! Remembering to let the child Jesus into my hart and to let him stay with me all year through!
Quoting from a popular Christmas carol: "The secret of Christmas is not what you do at Christmas time! But the Christmas things you do all year through."
I'm Donna J. Jodhan wishing you a wonderful Christmas and the very best for the new year. May all of your dreams come true!

Under the Christmas tree
It may not be Christmas yet but boy do I have some wonderful memories to share with you. Memories of me as a child with very little vision enjoying my experiences under our family’s Christmas tree. I had enough vision then to see the lights in their different colors. I could see the other decorations on the tree, as well, but I did not have quite enough vision to help decorate the tree.
That was okay by me. I enjoyed smelling the fragrant pine of our live tree. At night I would crawl under our tree and lie quietly among the presents, taking care not to crush any of them. My two brothers were always trying to peek into their presents and they would let me have a feel of mine. I would shake them to see if I could tell what mine were but my brothers would peek and tell. Oh how much fun it was then.
I always loved our Christmas tree and everything that went with it. I loved everything about those wonderful trees. The smell of them, what lay under them, and what was placed on and around them. Ah yes! Under the Christmas tree!
I’m Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly accessibility advocate, wishing you a terrific day and urging you to go out there and tell others about my memories of being under my Christmas tree.

The color of Christmas
As Andy Williams used to sing out each year: "It's the most wonderful time of the year," and this is certainly the case for me. It is that time of year when the child in me decides to show itself. I am never too embarrassed to express my joy whenever I hear Santa's rich laughter and whenever I smell the sweet fragrance of pine. All of those colorful presents, bows, lights, and other goodies dancing before my eyes!
Now that my vision is down to a bare minimum, I use my imagination to help me out. I imagine all those mysterious colored packages under a huge tree decorated with blinking lights. I can almost see those colorful lights dancing in my memory and I can practically reach out and grab one of those mysterious packages from under the tree.
Lights intermingled with artificial snowflakes, all kinds of Christmas figures, and at the top of the tree? The shining star!
I must not forget my angel and my manger with the Baby Jesus lying in Mother Mary's arms. The animals, shepherds, Joseph, and the three wise men. All fixed in my mind's eye forever.
The toys all come alive in my mind! Doll houses filled with little people. Furniture, tea sets, and strollers with baby dolls. Even the racing cars, train sets, and those ice skates dancing just out of my reach. The skis waiting for me to put them on and the colorful balls and game sets.
Ah yes! The color of Christmas and I will forever be a child at this time of the year!
I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly accessibility advocate, wishing you a happy, Holy, and safe Christmas!

Little Christmas tree
It was the night before Christmas and in my dreams I slipped lazily and happily into memory lane. Another time had come and as I stood there, the little Christmas tree twinkled in front of my eyes. The tree smelled so wonderful! It gave off the scent of warm pine. The colored lights danced in front of my eyes as they took turns blinking on and off.
I moved oh so carefully towards my little Christmas tree, being careful not to step on packages neatly piled in front of it. I had to get as close as I could so as to see everything. My partial sight only allowed me the luxury of seeing things very close up and at best only a few things at a time. Nevertheless, it was enough for me.
I gingerly reached out and placed my index finger on one of the little lights, a little yellow one. Then I took my time at identifying other colors. Red, blue, and green. Then I had to take my time at finding a spot where there were no lights. I found it after a few moments and I held a tiny portion of a branch between my fingers.
Next I looked upwards and found the star at the very top. I stood gazing for quite some time thinking of the story that my parents would tell me every Christmas, the night that Jesus was born. What a lovely memory for me. Then I bent down and felt for some of the packages and finally I made my way to where the manger had been set up. There I spent most of my time examining each little figure: Baby Jesus in the arms of Mary and Joseph, the three Wise Men, the shepherds, and the animals.
Ah! That was a memory of when I was a child and had enough vision to see it all then. Now I can only recall this memory each Christmas and that’s okay for me. At least I have a memory that I can recall and one that I can cherish forever.
Merry Christmas everyone!

Christmas is for me
I have had the good fortune to enjoy many wonderful Christmases, with and without vision and it does not matter! Christmas is for me. The smells and the sounds, the laughter and the merry making.
When I had enough sight, I used to enjoy going out to window shop. To see the bright colorful lights, the flickering candles in the Church, Santa's bright red suit, and streets crowded with throngs of folks of all ages. I also loved to smell the scent of rich pine, cakes and goodies baking in ovens, and taste the various Christmas foods and drinks. I also loved to walk in the snow and watch those big white snowflakes race each other to the ground but most of all, I loved to ice skate around those huge outdoor rinks decorated with Christmas lights.
That was then and this is now but not much has changed for me. True it is that I can no longer see the flickering candles, the colorful Christmas lights, and the big fat snowflakes, but this does not prevent me from enjoying this special time of the year. My sense of smell is still intact along with my sense of taste and I use my memories of years gone by to help me along. I focus on the times when I could see and intermingle those memories with the now. I am blessed! I am lucky! With or without sight, Christmas is for me! I am a kid at heart, playing with my talking games, playing my electronic keyboard, and my Christmas CDs.
Merry Christmas, happy holidays, Joyeux Noèl, and Feliz Navidad to you all! I'm Donna J. Jodhan. Will see you again in the New Year.

Protecting the birds from the cat
This was one of my favorite activities for summer 2015 when I spent the summer at my mom's home. Protecting the birds from the cat!
Her name was Gladys and she was our beloved adopted cat and they were the birds out there just trying to protect themselves and their young ones from Gladys.
You see, Gladys was relentless. She was very swift and not very willing to listen to good advice, so to speak. She thought that she could catch them whenever she pleased.
I'd be sitting in Mom's dining room working away and then I would hear the birds outside on Mom's patio making low, sharp sounds. The sounds were urgent-like and I would know that something was wrong.
So I would rush outside and onto the patio and there she would be, sitting quietly looking up into the trees. Most of the time I would not even know that she was there but Mom would see me going towards the patio and she would look through her kitchen window and tell me that Gladys was prowling around.
As soon as I would open the back door Gladys would be off like a shot, running down the steps without a sound and I would be left to shout at her departing back.
This happened several times over the summer until the day Gladys gave birth to seven lovely kittens. No more time for Gladys to disturb those wonderful little birds.

The complete picture of Aaron
You see, this delightful man is my technological right arm and I have been working with him since 2012. He lives in the United States and I live in Toronto and we have never met face to face.
Up until now Aaron has been a voice at the other end of a phone line, on Skype and on Facetime. We exchange emails constantly as part of our working relationship and this is the sum of our interaction.
No wonder when I discovered that he had put up a photo of himself on Facebook that I was so very excited. I ran to my mom and asked her to describe him to me. She took great care to describe Aaron to me and at the end of it all? I rubbed my hands together and said to myself, "Now I have the complete picture of you, Aaron!" Your voice, your image, and everything in between.
So often and even more now so than ever, I am unable to add an image of someone to their profile so whenever I am able to obtain a mental one I am very happy.

When I used the wrong cleaner
Looking back at this particular incident I can now smile at it but at the time it was a bit of an embarrassment for me.
This magical moment, as I would say, took place at my mom's home a few months ago when I offered to clean her tub and wash basins. So, off I went to fetch the bottle of cleaning detergent and before starting my work I smelled and sniffed the contents of the bottle and it did smell like cleaning detergent.
I took my time at cleaning tub and wash basins and all seemed to be well until my mom came by and we started chatting. I showed her the bottle that I was using but then there was a pause.
Oh no, was what I thought to myself. What's wrong? Then Mom said in a very gentle but reassuring voice, "You used the wrong cleaner. You used something entirely different." Then she laughed and I followed suit.

When Mom meets me at the airport
This is probably one of the sunniest days for me, whenever Mom meets me at the airport. This usually occurs after I have been away from home for over five months and now I have returned to her home to spend a few months with her.
This is my summer visit to my mom where I come home to rest, relax, and continue my work or as I like to call it, my summer worcation.
After I have cleared customs and collected my luggage, I usually walk out with an agent and I give them a description of Mom. Normally, they do not have to wait for too long as before I know it she is running towards me.
I can hear her quick familiar steps approaching and then her bubbly voice in greeting. In no time she is in front of me and we are embracing. Then I take her right arm and we walk together towards the exit. My luggage is stacked high in the luggage basket and then our ever faithful driver, Ramlall, is also there.
Sometimes Ram, as I affectionately call him, manages to sneak in ahead of Mom to greet me and it is always so very nice to hear his voice, positive and strong.
Then Ram rolls the basket to the car, packs my luggage in the trunk and we are on our way.
Ah, yes! Another time at the airport.

Turning off my Netbook
Whenever I go to turn off my Netbook, I always need to make sure that it is turned off completely. This has been a constant problem for me but a few months ago I discovered a very safe and somewhat unique way. This is how it works for me.
First, as always, I wait to hear the short burst of music to signify that my Netbook has accepted my option to shut down. Next I place my hand on my external drive and I hold it there until I can no longer feel the vibration coming from it. When the vibration has stopped I know then that my Netbook has now turned itself off.
You see, I am unable to see the screen so I cannot tell that it has gone dark. When the vibration to the external drive has stopped it means that the entire system has been shut down.

Remembering my trip to South America
It is as if it only happened yesterday. But in reality it took place many years ago and it was one of the best family trips for me.
My mom, brothers Jeffrey and Robert, along with my dad and Uncle Ben went on a three week trip to South America. In those days my vision was very limited so I had to depend on my family to describe things to me and boy they did not disappoint.
Dad described everything to me as the plane flew. Mom described things to me in the various shopping centers, and the boys and my uncle filled in the rest.
I learned so much on this trip. My history lessons were filled with rich content and lots of exciting things to do and learn. My shopping trips were filled with lots of activities and so too were the tours that Dad had arranged for the family.
I vastly improved my skills in the Spanish language and at the end of it all my South American history was safely implanted in my mind.
Then we met up with Auntie Norma and her family in Miami and this was yet another treat for me. Good laughs, good times, and great memories.
My senses of smell, taste, and touch were made to work overtime and they sure helped me to appreciate so much. I thank my parents for having given me this opportunity to learn so much in such a short time.

Those crossword books
Alas! I have not been able to find any crossword books for someone who is blind. There are, of course, large print crossword books but none for a person who uses Braille. There may be books for the one who likes to work
electronically so I may have to get used to this mode when working with crossword puzzles.
When I had functional vision I used to be able to work with large print books and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now this is not possible but I have a great substitute.
I sit with my mom as she does her crosswords the normal way and she often asks my assistance to help her solve her own crosswords. I really like this as it allows Mom and I to have quality time together.

Enjoying my knitting lessons
In 2014 I decided to take the plunge and start taking knitting lessons and I can tell you that I have never regretted it.
It all comes down to having a great teacher who is not afraid to work with me despite my blindness. Miko is fun. She is extremely creative and nothing stands in her way. Her assistants are also extremely helpful and encouraging and I am happy to report that for the Fall of 2015 we will be embarking on a project to make bunnies for babies.
My knitting lessons are so much fun, so enjoyable, and they absolutely clear my mind of clutter.
Knitting for me is relaxing and something to do with my hands when I simply just want to sit and vegetate, as they say. It comes easy to me and I have learned how to fix stitches, drop stitches, plus so much more. Knitting, as they say, is barrier free to me as a blind person and I am looking forward to continuing to work with Miko.
If you live in Toronto then why not drop by her Purple Purl store? Give her a call at (416)364-1162. Her store is in the Leslieville area.

Setting up my nose irrigation device
A few months ago I decided to bite the bullet and purchase a nose irrigation device as I have been suffering from congestion for some time now.
After buying this sophisticated device I knew that in order to set it up I had to seek sighted assistance to do so as the instructions did not come in any sort of electronic or Braille format and this was absolutely no surprise to me. So, on a bright sunny day my friend, Sue, set about to make it work.
Sue was absolutely very patient, taking her time to assemble it and then I had to test it. I trusted Sue implicitly and accordingly everything went really well.
Just think: If Sue had not been there to assist me or if I had not been able to find a sighted person to help me, this device would not have been available to me. This is not the end of my story, however. There is more to come.
I can only encourage manufacturers to keep us in mind when they send out their products with manuals that are unreadable to the print disabled, as they often refer to us.

Looking for products in the pharmacy
I find that the easiest way for me to do this is to be very specific as to what I seek. So this is how I do it.
I either take a replica of what I am looking for: empty box, bottle, or package or tube. If I am unable to do so then I type out a description on my computer and I print it off on my printer and take it along.
When I enter the pharmacy I hand it off to the customer service rep or if a friend accompanies me I give it to them. This method sure works. I find it very effective. It sure helps to avoid lengthy explanations and I do not have to spend time explaining things to the one helping me.

Imagining the dragons and witches
I am not ashamed to admit that my images of dragons and witches were really out of this world when I was growing up. As a kid with very little vision it was so very easy for me to put my imagination to work.
I can tell you that when one's vision is at a minimum one's imagination quickly kicks in to fill the gaps and this was it for me. Boy, did my imagination run freely. I got to imagine so many things and dragons and witches were just a few of the things that my imagination created for me.
Dragons were gigantic things of all colors! Their hands and feet were extra large and fire came rolling out of their larger than life mouths. They possessed extra strength and had the ability to pluck me out of my bed and run away with me!
As for the witches? They were dressed in black from head to toe. They carried huge magical wands and waved them as they walked. They used their wands to cast wicked spells and their faces wore expressions of evil! Their teeth were long and pointed!
Was my imagination far off from the truth as depicted in story books? Maybe not as far off as I thought. Ah yes! Those were my images as a child!

When the shopping cart went haywire
I still smile to myself each time I remember this particular incident. One moment I was hanging on to my shopping cart and the next the wind had taken it away from me and I was left without my cart.
It was a cold winter's day when this took place. I had just finished my grocery shopping and there I was, standing outside waiting on the cab to arrive. I thought that I was hanging on tightly enough, but alas! No! An unexpected gust of cold wind rose up and before I could react my shopping cart was wrenched from my hands.
I simply felt the cart leaving my hands while at the same time I heard it moving away. No time to stand still! I began to reach frantically for it using my cane to help me out. I began to panic!
I moved forward and then backward and then left and then right! I swept my cane in all directions! No one to help me! The wind continued to blow strong and hard!
Then help came! A kind passer-by came to my rescue when he saw what was happening. He rescued my shopping cart and brought it safely back to me! My shopping cart had drifted several feet away from me! All ended well!

Learning card making by phone
I can tell you that thanks to my friend, Denise Sanders, I have now found a new way to be creative. Yes! It is all about card making and I am really enjoying it.
Denise and I have had several sessions via phone. She is probably one of the most patient teachers and she has once again shown that it is indeed possible for the blind to lead the blind!
You see, we are both blind and it has not stopped us from having so much fun with our card making hobby. Denise teaches and I follow her instructions. We exchange ideas and we allow our imagination to roam and wonder. I have so much fun with this wonderful lady and very good friend.
Thanks so much, boss, for having introduced me to this new hobby.

Learning to look after the orchid
I have always loved plants and flowers and one of the presents that I received for my birthday in 2015 was a beautiful orchid. Of course, it was described to me and after everyone had gone home and the night had arrived, I tiptoed up to my new friend and took a few minutes to get familiar with her.
My new orchid had two flowers on it and some thick leaves. It was tall and a bit slender but I particularly loved the small flowers. Before my friend, Gabriella, had left that day she gave me a quick lesson on how to look after my orchid. She told me to place two ice cubes in its pot. One on each side of the pot and to do it once weekly.
My beautiful orchid is very well and alive today. I tiptoe up to her pot every day and I run my fingers gently along her leaves. I know what orchids look like because of my former vision so I can use my memory to help me along.

The Japanese lunch
In May 2015 my friend Gabriella took me for my birthday lunch and this time around it was a sumptuous Japanese lunch. On this day, however, Gabriella made sure that I had a full blown description of my surroundings.
Gabriella is one of the few persons who really takes the time to describe things to me. My mom is another and I was not sorry after listening to Gabriella's descriptions.
She paid particular attention to two men who were enjoying a large boat of sushi. She told me that the boat was about two feet long and six inches wide and that it was loaded with all kinds of sushi pieces and as Gabriella described my surroundings to me I ate happily and envisioned everything that she was describing to me.
I particularly enjoyed her description of the large boat. I could practically see the sushi pieces dancing invitingly in front of my sightless eyes and I could envision the two men enjoying their delicious meal.
At the end of our lunch I can tell you that I was one of the happiest persons on earth for that day. Great food! Great company, and one of my best friends describing everything to me!

Remembering the crabs
This is probably another of my favorite childhood memories but in those days I did not have enough vision to clearly see them. So I had to depend on the descriptions of siblings, parents, and other family members.
Yet, for all of this I managed to develop my very own version of a crab and I have to admit that my version was not very close to reality.
I imagined the poor little crabs to be gigantic with huge claws and pincers. I was always afraid of them and one day I was baby sitting one in a paper cup. I stuck my fingers in and it almost had them for its supper.
Then the day came and I was able to see the crabs for real. No, they were not what I had imagined them to be. No, not too cute looking but nowhere as big as I had imagined them to be.
My first opportunity to see what a crab really looked like came on a warm sunny day at the beach and my dad drew my attention to a small red crab crawling along. He allowed me to look at it for a few minutes and then he picked it up and placed it gently in my hand.
He told me to stand very still and stood beside me as the crab crawled around in my hand. Nothing to it, the crab never bit me. It simply crawled around and after some moments I placed him on the sand and he just simply
scurried away.
Another cherished memory for my memory bank.

Trying to fix an iPhone
Have you ever tried to help fix an iPhone with no screen showing? This is what happened to me a few weeks ago as I offered to help solve the problem of a sick iPhone.
It belonged to my niece, Martha, and before I tried my sister-in-law had told me that the screen was black. This somehow did not worry me too much as long as I have voice-over it does not matter whether or not the screen is black.
So off I went, hoping and praying that I could solve the mystery. I did a hard reset by pressing the two appropriate buttons and the encouraging indicator of a vibration soon greeted me, but alas! My luck ended right there.
I could hear the voice-over telling me that I was cycling through the various versions of the hello screen but with no sighted indicators to help me tap on the right spot, nothing could be done. I could not even get the iPhone to respond to my taps with clicking sounds.
So much for my having tried to help. In short, neither sighted assistance nor I could solve the problem.

Somewhere over the rainbow
It is not very often that anyone has the good fortune and privilege to see a rainbow in the sky but I can tell you that when I had my sight, I was one of those persons.
I am not sure how many rainbows I got to see before I lost my sight but how well I do remember a rainbow in the sky. There it was, just literally lying there in the sky. So very colorful, so very peaceful, and one of the prettiest things to behold!
On almost every occasion I would be sitting in a chair outside and on my own and then I would happen to look skyward and voila! There was my pretty rainbow just lazily looking down at me!
Some of the time I would sit there just staring upwards and then if I felt like it I would call to others to come and see but for the most part I would prefer to enjoy my rainbow by myself.
The other day my mom spotted one in the sky while we were sitting outdoors on her patio and she proceeded to describe it to me. My memory began to wander back to those other days when I was able to see it for myself.
The rainbow had not changed; it was still its loveliest self. Colorful, large, and simply lying there in the sky on a peaceful late evening.
