2 different searches: When the cordless went missing

 

So, we had a vision-impaired person and her mom, who is hard of hearing, searching for the missing cordless phone.  I meticulously went from room to room searching for it.  I ran my fingers across all of the surfaces in each room while at the same time I tried to retrace my steps from memory.

Mom used her keen eye sight to do the same and it was she who eventually found it.  There it was, safe and sound.  Sitting on her coffee table in her living room.

I took it all in, just realizing that we both used different search mechanisms to carry out our searches.

It's the new way! Communicating with Mom

 It sure makes things interesting when a vision-impaired person, me, needs to engage and communicate with my mom who is hard of hearing. It does not work if I shout at her because I have learned that shouting does not have any affect, and why?

Because she will more than likely not be paying attention at any given time.  So what do I do?

I have been told that I need to get close beside her and then tap her on the hand or shoulder to gain her attention.  The challenge for me is to find where she is sitting or standing because I cannot always determine her location.

It has been very interesting and challenging for me but with a bit of hard work it is slowly getting better.

Sweet little voices: Crickets are here

 

And yes!  They are back, chirping loud and clear!  They start at around 6 pm and usually sign off at around 6 am.

I always admire how they sing in unison.  I am not sure how many of them there are but there must be a few!

I simply love to hear them at night when I retire to bed.  They are somehow soothing and refreshing. I sure admire how they start at the same time every evening, stop at the same time every morning, and you can set your clock by them.  Come rain or shine they are always here.

So frustrating for Mom: When the cable died at Mom's house

When it happens then we are both stuck.  I cannot see to help with the boxes and Mom’s limited technical ability is not quite enough.

We try to work together to solve the problem but in the end we need to ask Carl to help us.

The house grows very quiet when this happens and we are both anxious to have it come back.  Carl is very good and very quick and thank God for him.

A lighter moment:When Mom asked me to describe a picture

 

Looking back now I can only describe this as a very hilarious moment.  We were sitting quietly in my den and Mom wanted to know about a certain picture that we were discussing and then she asked me to describe it to her.

Lo and behold, we both laughed out loud at the same time!  I could not because I am vision-impaired and do not have enough vision to describe it.  Mom took my response in good spirits and the take away for me is that she does not consider me to be vision-impaired.

Good or bad?  I’ll take the good!

Very irretating! When Rico woke me up

Rico is Mom’s beloved stray cat pet.  He belongs to the community at large but Mom has adopted him and is always on the lookout for him and to make sure that he does not get into trouble.

Rico has a very distinguishable voice.  It is loud, high pitched, and strong.  So that the night he woke me up, it was very easy for me to know that it was him. I am not sure, though, why he was yelling so loudly!  Not sure if he was either fighting or what?

Must be very careful: Organizing my medications

I place high importance on being able to organize my medications in a logical way for me to be able to safely find, identify, and navigate among them.

I am required to take several medications daily and alas!  Most of the bottles are of the same size and shape.  So. what do I do?

I organize them in groups of categories.  I place identification tape on the bottles so that I know which is which.

The other day, my always on the alert pharmacist told me about talking labels and the next time I go to the pharmacy for my refills I’ll be using these.
